You can run a continuous internet radio station on YouTube by sending a licensed audio program—often paired with a still image or visualizer—from an encoder to YouTube Live Control Room. The practical setup is straightforward; the harder parts are securing music rights, maintaining a reliable connection, monitoring the broadcast, and planning for interruptions. YouTube’s help guidance does not promise that one stream can run indefinitely or that a continuous broadcast will be fully archived.
What you need before you start
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming. YouTube says the channel must be verified and have no live-stream restrictions in the preceding 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours. Check YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance and encoder setup instructions.
- An encoder: software running on a computer or standalone encoding hardware. YouTube lists encoder options, but third-party products are not made by YouTube.
- A program you have the necessary rights to broadcast on YouTube, in the relevant territories. Rights for a recording, a live broadcast, and an archive may differ.
- Stable upload bandwidth, tested audio/video, and a person or system able to notice and respond to silence, connection failures, encoder stoppages, or policy interruptions.
Choose how the station will run
Software on a computer
An encoder application on a desktop or dedicated computer is a flexible way to send a playlist, audio feed, and visual to YouTube. The computer, encoder, and internet connection must remain available while it broadcasts. Plan for power, operating-system updates, software crashes, and network outages rather than assuming the setup will be unattended indefinitely.
Standalone encoder hardware
YouTube also describes standalone hardware encoders as an option. This avoids relying on a general-purpose computer for encoding, but it still depends on power, network access, the hardware’s capabilities, and a monitoring and recovery plan. Confirm that the specific encoder supports the workflow and protocol you intend to use.
Choose a stream schedule with archives in mind
YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. That is not a promise of perpetual live runtime or complete archiving for a longer continuous station. If an archive matters, plan shorter broadcasts and deliberate restarts, and verify each resulting archive in YouTube Studio. See YouTube’s encoder guidance.

Set up and launch the broadcast
- Enable live streaming. Verify the channel and check its live-stream access. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours before the feature becomes available.
- Clear the program for broadcast. Obtain the music and other rights needed for the content, platform, territories, live use, and any archive you intend to retain. If a rights holder has licensed the music, ask whether your channel must be allowlisted in Content ID.
- Prepare the radio program. Build and test the playlist or audio feed in the chosen encoder. Add a still image, station artwork, or visualizer if you want a visual on the watch page; audio quality still needs attention even when the picture is static.
- Create an encoder stream. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or schedule an encoder stream. Copy the stream URL and stream key shown there into the matching fields in your encoder. The key authorizes an encoder feed, so handle it like a password. You can manage stream settings through YouTube’s live stream settings.
- Set the encoder parameters. Follow YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate recommendations. Its guidance recommends constant bitrate (CBR), a keyframe interval of 2 seconds (no more than 4 seconds), and AAC or MP3 audio for the documented settings. For stereo audio, it recommends 44.1 kHz sample rate and 128 Kbps. RTMPS is a recommended secure ingestion option. Use the settings supported by your encoder and selected ingestion path.
- Start a test transmission. Send representative audio and video, inspect the Live Control Room preview, and verify the public watch page on desktop and mobile before relying on the stream. Listen for silence, clipping, interruptions, or unexpected source changes.
- Start the station and monitor it. Check stream health and playback after launch, then arrange ongoing checks and a response plan for encoder, power, internet, silence, and policy issues. YouTube advises testing equipment and monitoring the stream; its documentation does not guarantee uninterrupted service or automatic recovery from every outage.
Bandwidth, protocol, and stream quality
Leave upload headroom
Your connection must sustain the total outgoing bitrate. YouTube recommends testing upload speed and leaving 20% beyond the stream’s total bitrate; include primary and backup streams in that total if you send both. Its guidance puts it this way: “We recommend leaving a bit of room (20% recommended).” See YouTube’s streaming tips. A speed test is only a snapshot: test under realistic network conditions and leave margin for fluctuations and other household or office traffic.
Do not increase bitrate blindly
A higher bitrate can improve the encoded feed but requires more stable upload capacity. Use YouTube’s current recommendations for the resolution and frame rate you select, then confirm the actual preview and viewer playback. YouTube transcodes streams for viewers, but transcoding does not replace checking the source feed for audio problems, unstable video, or a failed connection.

RTMP, RTMPS, and HLS
Use the protocol your encoder and YouTube stream configuration support. YouTube recommends RTMPS as a secure ingestion option. HLS is another supported ingestion path for compatible encoders; YouTube describes it as higher latency than RTMP. HLS is not required just to run a simple audio-led station. Refer to the current encoder settings guidance for protocol-specific requirements.
Music rights and YouTube interruptions
Do not assume that music is cleared for a YouTube live broadcast just because it is purchased, described as royalty-free, or available through a subscription. The license terms determine what you can do, where, and whether live streaming and archiving are covered. YouTube’s terms say: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Read the livestream terms and conditions and confirm the rights directly with the relevant rights holder or licensing provider.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. Even when you have a license, a match may interrupt the stream if the rights holder has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Ask the rights holder about allowlisting before going live, and consult YouTube’s guidance on copyright issues with live streams. A license and an allowlist address different issues: confirm both where applicable.
Plan for failures and restarts
- Encoder stops or computer loses power: Check the encoder process, device power, and scheduled updates. Decide who will restart the program and how quickly.
- Internet drops or upload becomes unstable: Check the connection and available upload capacity, reduce competing network use, and test again before resuming. A backup connection can help only if it is configured and tested for the encoder workflow.
- Audio goes silent while video continues: Monitor the source playlist and encoder audio meters, and test the entire playback chain—not only the YouTube preview at startup.
- YouTube interrupts the stream over matched content: Review the notice and address the rights issue with the relevant owner. If the material is licensed, request Content ID allowlisting where needed; do not simply restart unchanged content and assume the interruption is resolved.
- A long broadcast does not produce a complete archive: YouTube’s stated automatic archive coverage applies to streams under 12 hours. Break the schedule into planned shorter streams if archives are important, and check each archive afterward.
YouTube also provides guidance on avoiding live-stream restrictions. Platform settings and policies can change, so check the current help pages before a launch or major configuration change.

Costs to account for
A do-it-yourself station’s total cost depends on what you already own and the rights needed for its programming. Budget for the encoder computer or hardware if needed, electricity, internet service, backup connectivity or power where appropriate, and music permissions. The YouTube guidance cited here does not establish a standard setup cost.
