The VPS keeps the encoder running when your own computer is off; it does not provide music rights or guarantee uninterrupted service. Before you build the stream, clear the rights for the music and test the actual server, encoder settings and YouTube connection.
What you need before you start
- A Hetzner server running Linux, with enough CPU, memory, storage and sustained outbound capacity for your chosen encoding profile. No specific Hetzner plan has been validated for this workload, so do not buy on the assumption that a particular plan will handle a particular resolution.
- FFmpeg, a prepared music playlist, and a visual feed such as artwork or a changing visual. Check every media file for missing tracks, silence, incompatible formats and abrupt transitions before scheduling it.
- A YouTube channel with access to Live Control Room, plus the stream’s server URL and private stream key.
- Written permissions that cover live streaming the relevant recordings and compositions in the territories where the stream will be available.
A VPS runs the encoder and sends its output to YouTube. You still need to monitor the broadcast and plan for server, network, encoder and platform interruptions.

Clear the music rights first
YouTube’s livestream terms put responsibility on the content provider to have the necessary rights for worldwide exploitation of the live content, including music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. The specific permissions depend on your catalogue, territories and intended use; this guide cannot determine which licenses a particular Indian music catalogue requires. Get written advice for the actual repertoire and distribution footprint before going live.

Confirm that permissions cover both the sound recording and the underlying composition, live use, relevant territories, any promotional use, and replay or archive use if you intend to keep a recording available. Ask rights owners whether they can add your channel to their Content ID allowlist, and test that arrangement before relying on an unattended stream. YouTube scans live streams for third-party content; an identified track can interrupt or terminate the stream even when you have a license if the rights owner has not allowlisted your channel.

YouTube Creator Music is not a shortcut for this use: YouTube says its tracks may be licensed or revenue-shared in long-form videos, but not in live streams or Shorts. Terms can also vary by track and territory.
Prepare the playlist and visual
Use a playlist you have checked
Keep the source files, track metadata and license records together, with a backup of the media. A playlist made from separate files is easiest to operate when the files use compatible audio formats and parameters. If the files differ, first prepare and test a continuous program file or a compatible playlist; do not assume an encoder will make every transition seamless.
For the example below, save an FFmpeg concat-demuxer playlist as /srv/music/playlist.txt. Use absolute paths and quote paths containing spaces:

file '/srv/music/track-03.mp3'Test the full sequence, including the transition from the last entry back to the first. The loop repeats the playlist; it does not verify that you have permission to broadcast its contents.

Prepare a visual feed
For a simple audio stream with artwork, use a still image sized to the output frame—for example, 1280 × 720 for a 720p output—and make sure you have permission to use that image. A static image is technically straightforward, but it does not turn a music-only loop into original programming or guarantee monetization eligibility.
Create a YouTube Live stream
- Open YouTube Studio and go to Create → Go live to enter Live Control Room.
- Create a stream and copy its Live server URL and stream key from the encoder setup. YouTube may display the labels differently as Studio changes.
- Keep the stream key private. Store it in a root- or service-user-readable configuration file rather than publishing it in a script or chat. If you believe it has been exposed, rotate it in YouTube Studio and update the server configuration.
- Before a long broadcast, use YouTube’s preview and stream-health indicators to verify that video and audio arrive correctly.
Install FFmpeg and configure a starter encode
On an Ubuntu or Debian server, install FFmpeg with the distribution package manager:

sudo apt install ffmpegThe following example sends a 1280 × 720, 30 fps H.264 picture with AAC stereo audio. It uses a 4,000 Kbps video target as an initial 720p test value, not a Hetzner guarantee or a bitrate recommendation for every source. Compare your resolution and frame rate with YouTube’s current encoder bitrate guidance, then test sustained output on the server you choose. If the server cannot maintain the selected encode and upload rate, reduce the profile and test again.
Create /etc/youtube-music.env with the exact server URL YouTube gave you and your stream key:

The command uses a two-second keyframe interval (60 frames at 30 fps), constant video bitrate, and YouTube’s listed stereo-audio settings of 44.1 kHz and 128 Kbps. It sends H.264 video and AAC audio over the RTMP-compatible FLV output. YouTube recommends RTMPS to encrypt the connection to Google’s servers; use the RTMPS server URL shown in Studio.
Set execution permissions and test the encoder with your actual media and stream key:

Keep the encoder running with systemd
A service manager can restart FFmpeg after some process failures, but it cannot promise that YouTube, the server or its network connection will remain continuously available. Put the encoder in a service and monitor it rather than treating automatic restart as proof that the broadcast recovered.
Create /etc/systemd/system/yt-music-live.service, substituting the Linux account that owns the media and script:

WantedBy=multi-user.targetEnsure the stream account can read the playlist, cover image, script and environment file, and that no other users can read the stream key. Then enable and start the service:

sudo systemctl enable --now yt-music-live
sudo systemctl status yt-music-live
sudo journalctl -u yt-music-live -fConfirm that YouTube receives the feed after a service restart and after a server reboot. Set an alert for encoder exit or prolonged loss of output, and document how to inspect logs, restart the service, rotate a compromised key and verify recovery in Live Control Room. YouTube can still interrupt a stream for detected third-party content, and a process restart does not resolve rights or Content ID problems.

Plan around YouTube’s archive limit
YouTube says a live stream under 12 hours can be automatically archived and recommends keeping a local archive backup. A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If a complete replay matters, do not rely on one uninterrupted 24/7 event to create it: record locally or schedule shorter broadcast sessions, and check the resulting archive.
Monetization is not automatic
YouTube’s monetization policies apply to live streams. The platform expects monetized channel content to be original and authentic; reused material without significant original commentary, modification or added value can put channel-level monetization at risk. A loop of music should not be presented as guaranteed eligible.
Eligible monetized live streams may use ads, Super Chat and Super Stickers, and channel memberships where available. YouTube reported an average uplift of over 20% in in-stream ad revenue per hour for channels that enabled automatic live mid-roll ads compared with channels that did not, across 207 countries, in a January 2024 platform-reported comparison. That average is not a promise for an individual channel or music stream, and ads are not guaranteed for every viewer or slot.
