But 1 GB of RAM is a constraint to test, not a configuration YouTube or Liquidsoap certifies as reliable: video encoding also depends on CPU allocation, resolution, frame rate, encoder settings and the provider’s limits. Before you start, make sure you have the rights to stream every recording and composition in your catalogue.
What you need before setting up the stream
- A Linux VPS with enough CPU capacity for your chosen video encoding settings, storage for your media files, and sufficient network transfer for a continuous outbound stream.
- A prepared playlist of music files and a visual to accompany the audio. YouTube Live is a video ingest workflow; an audio playlist still needs a video output.
- A Liquidsoap installation with FFmpeg encoding support, or another setup that can encode and send your prepared stream to YouTube Live.
- A YouTube channel eligible for live streaming and a stream key from YouTube Studio. Follow YouTube’s current live-streaming setup guidance for channel eligibility and ingest details.
- Permission covering each sound recording and composition, the relevant territories, and online livestream use. A purchased download or consumer music subscription does not by itself establish those rights.
Clear the music rights before going live
YouTube’s livestream terms require the channel operator to have the necessary rights to exploit live content worldwide on Google services, including music licensing rights involving artists, record labels, publishers and other royalty participants. “Indian music” is not a copyright exception. Confirm that permissions cover the specific recordings and compositions you plan to use, the territories where the stream will be available, and live online use.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. A match can result in a warning, a placeholder image, an interruption or termination. Even if you have a licence, the stream can still be interrupted if the rights holder has not allowlisted your channel through Content ID. Ask the owner or distributor how to arrange allowlisting before broadcasting. If you save the live stream as an archive, it may also receive a claim after the broadcast ends. - Prepare a minimal Linux server. Choose a VPS plan with enough CPU for video encoding, media storage, and an outbound transfer allowance suitable for continuous streaming. A 1 GB RAM plan alone does not establish that the server can encode your chosen output reliably. Provider limits and actual CPU allocation matter too.
- Install Liquidsoap with FFmpeg support. Use the installation instructions for your Linux distribution and Liquidsoap version. Liquidsoap’s FFmpeg video guidance explains that video uses substantially more CPU than audio. Verify that the installed build has the FFmpeg encoding support needed for your output.
- Prepare and verify your media library. Put only tracks you are cleared to stream in the playlist location. Check that files open and play correctly, and keep a separate copy of the library. Plan enough disk space for the media; the VPS’s RAM is not storage.
- Configure the playlist and fallback behavior. In Liquidsoap, set up the playlist source and a fallback behavior for cases such as the playlist ending or a file failing. Configure the output to use FFmpeg encoding and YouTube’s current ingest address. The exact configuration syntax depends on the installed Liquidsoap version and encoder build; use the documentation for that version rather than copying a configuration intended for a different release.
- Get the current ingest details from YouTube Studio. Open YouTube Studio, select Create > Go live, and use the stream key and ingest information shown for the broadcast. Labels and available options can change. Treat the key like a password: keep it out of public configuration repositories, shared scripts and logs, and reset it in Studio if it is exposed.
- Start with an unlisted test. Start the encoder and check YouTube Studio’s stream health before making the stream public. Confirm that the video and audio are present, the playlist advances as expected, and the stream does not fall behind or repeatedly disconnect.
- Run the process under supervision. Configure the VPS’s service manager or another supervisor to start the streaming process after reboot, restart it if it exits, and retain logs that do not expose the stream key. Test a process restart and a VPS reboot before relying on unattended operation.
Use YouTube-compatible encoder settings
YouTube’s encoder guidance recommends RTMPS, the secure version of RTMP; H.264 video; AAC or MP3 audio; constant bitrate (CBR); progressive scan; and a two-second keyframe interval, with a recommendation not to exceed four seconds. For stereo audio, YouTube lists 128 kbps and a 44.1 kHz sample rate. These are platform recommendations, not evidence that a particular VPS can encode them in real time.

- Resolution and frame rate: Choose conservative dimensions and frame rate if the VPS has limited CPU. Use the current YouTube encoder guidance for the supported resolution and bitrate combinations; the correct choice depends on the output you intend to send and what the server can sustain.
- Video bitrate: Use CBR and select a bitrate appropriate to your chosen output from YouTube’s current guidance. Do not assume that selecting a platform-recommended bitrate means a low-resource VPS can encode it.
- Keyframes: Set the interval to two seconds where the encoder permits it, and do not exceed four seconds.
- Audio: Use AAC or MP3. For stereo, YouTube lists 128 kbps at 44.1 kHz.
- Transport: Prefer RTMPS when available in the YouTube ingest details and your encoder.
Test with motion and audio representative of the real stream, as YouTube recommends. A static or low-motion visual may reduce encoding work, but it does not prove that a 1 GB RAM VPS has enough CPU capacity.
Benchmark the actual 1 GB VPS
There is no universal 1 GB RAM configuration established by Liquidsoap’s or YouTube’s cited guidance. Before committing to a public 24/7 stream, run the intended playlist and visual at the intended settings on the exact VPS plan. Observe CPU and memory use, dropped frames, outbound throughput, and reconnect behavior while the test runs. Check the provider’s shared-CPU limits, transfer allowance, network or port restrictions, storage, region and support terms.

If the encoder cannot keep pace, reduce the resolution, frame rate or other encoding demands and test again. If it still falls behind, use a VPS with more suitable CPU resources or encode elsewhere. Continuous output also consumes outbound bandwidth around the clock; calculate the expected transfer using your actual stream bitrate and compare it with the provider’s allowance and billing rules.

A supervisor can relaunch a process after it exits, but that is not the same as guaranteeing uninterrupted service. Test both the local encoder process and its reconnection behavior with YouTube, keep useful logs, and make sure restart behavior does not expose credentials.

- YouTube shows no incoming stream: Check that the current Studio stream key and ingest address match the encoder configuration, the key has not been reset, and outbound connections are allowed by the VPS provider.
- Video or audio is missing: Check that the selected FFmpeg encoder is available in the Liquidsoap build, the media files are readable, and the output uses a video stream as well as the intended audio codec.
- Dropped frames or a stream that falls behind: Check CPU load and the selected resolution, frame rate and bitrate. Reduce encoding demands and repeat the test; if the VPS still cannot keep pace, the plan is not suitable for those settings.
- The stream disconnects and does not resume: Inspect the encoder and supervisor logs, then test a restart and reconnection with the current YouTube ingest details. A process supervisor can restart an exited process, but reconnect behavior must be verified for the encoder and configuration you actually use.
- YouTube replaces the broadcast or interrupts it: Check Studio alerts and the rights status of the material. A licence may not prevent interruption unless the rights holder has allowlisted the channel through Content ID.
- The VPS runs out of disk or transfer allowance: Check media-library size, log retention and the provider’s storage and network accounting. A continuous stream’s transfer needs recur for as long as it is live.
Do not assume a 24/7 music loop will qualify for monetization
Keeping a stream online does not guarantee YouTube Partner Program approval or monetization. YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to livestreams and identify repetitive or mass-produced material as potentially inauthentic and ineligible. YouTube says it clarified and renamed its “repetitious content” policy to “inauthentic content” on July 15, 2025. Rights clearance, playlist length and continuous uptime do not by themselves establish channel eligibility. Add meaningful original value and review the current channel-level requirements.
