AzuraCast can automate a continuous music-radio station from media assigned to its playlists, and it can mix in live DJ input. But AzuraCast’s station output is not, by itself, a documented end-to-end YouTube video stream: you still need a separately configured relay or encoder to deliver the station audio with a video signal to YouTube. Secure the necessary music rights before you broadcast.
What you need before you start
- An AzuraCast host: AzuraCast is free server-based software that can be installed on a VPS, dedicated server, or another computer. The host must remain available for the station to keep running; AzuraCast’s continuous-broadcast capability is not a guarantee of any particular server’s uptime.
- A prepared music library: Files need to be assigned to a playlist for AutoDJ to play them. Simply placing files in the media directory does not schedule them.
- A YouTube channel eligible to livestream: YouTube’s “Get started with live streaming” guidance says the channel must be verified and must not have had a live-stream restriction in the preceding 90 days. The page’s publication year is not shown; check the current YouTube requirements before planning a launch.
- A separate YouTube distribution path: You need a component that can take the AzuraCast station audio, pair it with a video signal, and send the resulting stream to YouTube. The AzuraCast documentation described here does not establish a specific relay, encoder, video-image, or reconnect configuration.
- Permission for the music: YouTube requires worldwide rights for Live Content on Google services, including relevant music licensing rights. Confirm permissions for the actual compositions and recordings, territories, live broadcast, and any archive or replay before transmitting.
Set up continuous station playback in AzuraCast
- Install AzuraCast on a host you can administer. Choose a VPS, dedicated server, or other computer and plan for ongoing maintenance, backups, security, and monitoring. The available documentation does not establish server-size recommendations or hosting costs, so choose those based on your library, expected workload, and provider.
- Add your music to the station’s media library. Organize the recordings so you can identify what belongs in the broadcast. Uploading or copying a file into the media directory is not enough to make AutoDJ play it.
- Assign the tracks to an AutoDJ playlist. The playlist assignment is the essential scheduling step. Check that the tracks intended for continuous rotation are actually included in a playlist used by the station.
- Confirm the station output. AzuraCast’s AutoDJ/backend uses Liquidsoap to combine media, playlists, and live input into a station output, then transcodes that output to station formats. A mount point can provide the same station broadcast in different formats and bitrates for listeners; it does not, on its own, create a YouTube video stream or prove that YouTube accepts that mount URL.
- Test continuous playback before connecting YouTube. Confirm that the station is playing the intended playlist and that its output is reachable from the separate distribution component you choose. The AzuraCast material covered here does not specify a universal mount URL, audio format, port, or bitrate for a YouTube relay, so do not assume one value applies to every installation.
Add live DJ input, if you need it
AzuraCast supports streamer accounts that connect to Liquidsoap using compatible Icecast or Shoutcast broadcast software. This lets live DJ input join the station output alongside AutoDJ. AzuraCast’s software guide recommends Icecast mode for Mixxx.

- Create and configure a streamer account in AzuraCast, then use its connection details in compatible DJ software.
- Check that the broadcaster can reach the relevant station ports. If AzuraCast is behind a reverse proxy, verify direct broadcaster connectivity: AzuraCast warns that some proxy services prevent those connections.
- Test the DJ connection and the transition between live input and AutoDJ before relying on it during a scheduled broadcast.
Streamer input changes the station playout; it does not remove the separate YouTube relay requirement. The documented AzuraCast setup does not establish an end-to-end recipe for forwarding that mixed station output to YouTube.

Connect the station to a YouTube live event
YouTube lists encoder streaming as a way to go live. For an AzuraCast-based radio channel, the remaining design task is a separate video-capable distribution path that receives the station audio, supplies a visual component, and sends a live feed to YouTube using the event’s current ingest settings and stream key.

The official AzuraCast documentation covered here explains station playout, streamer input, and mount points, but not a complete AzuraCast-to-YouTube relay configuration. It therefore does not establish a particular relay product, command, ingest URL, video composition, bitrate, resolution, keyframe interval, or automatic-reconnect setting. Those values depend on the relay and YouTube’s current encoder instructions; use the chosen relay’s documentation and the settings shown in YouTube’s live setup rather than copying unverified values.
- Confirm your channel is eligible to livestream before scheduling the broadcast.
- Create or select the YouTube live event and obtain its stream key through YouTube’s live setup. Treat the key as a secret: anyone with access to it may be able to send a feed to that destination.
- Configure a separately verified relay or encoder to receive the AzuraCast station audio and produce the video stream YouTube requires. Test the audio, visual, and event destination before announcing the channel.
- Observe the actual YouTube event and relay during a test. Confirm that the audio is present, the visual is intentional, and a dropped connection can be detected and recovered according to the relay’s documented behavior.
As published in YouTube Help’s “Get started with live streaming” guidance, a channel may have up to 10 active streams, and a stream key may have up to 3 active streams. The page does not show a publication year; treat these as YouTube’s stated operational limits and recheck the current page before relying on them.

YouTube’s Livestream terms state: “You represent and warrant that you have all necessary rights for the exploitation of the Live Content on the Google Services throughout the world, including, without limitation, music licensing rights from artists, record labels, publishers (including public performance licenses) and any other royalty participants.” Which Indian licences apply to a particular channel cannot be determined without knowing its catalogue, rights chain, territories, and business circumstances.

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it identifies a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and warn the creator; continued use can lead to interruption or termination. YouTube also says licensed material may be interrupted if the rights owner has not added the channel to its Content ID allowlist. Keep records of the rights covering the specific recordings and compositions, intended territories, live use, and any planned archive, and coordinate allowlisting where applicable.

- Buying a track or having a personal music-streaming subscription does not, by itself, establish permission for a public 24/7 YouTube broadcast.
- A “free” or “royalty-free” label does not guarantee that Content ID will not flag a track. Check the actual licence and permissions for the planned use.
- YouTube describes its Audio Library as a copyright-safe source, but check the specific track’s terms.
- YouTube says Creator Music licensed and revenue-sharing tracks may be used in long-form videos, not livestreams or Shorts. Its cited availability information says it is available to US creators in the YouTube Partner Program, with expansion beyond the US pending. These terms and availability can change, so verify them before relying on Creator Music.
Keep the station reliable and manageable
- Monitor both systems: AzuraCast station playback and the separate YouTube relay are different parts of the chain. A station that is still playing does not prove that YouTube is receiving a live feed.
- Plan for recovery: Confirm how your selected relay detects a dropped YouTube connection and whether it can reconnect. The AzuraCast documentation described here does not specify YouTube reconnect behavior.
- Back up your library and configuration: A server failure or accidental change can interrupt the station even when the AutoDJ setup is correct. The sources do not prescribe a backup schedule or retention period; choose one that fits your operation.
- Review limits before adding events: YouTube’s published active-stream limits can affect channels running multiple simultaneous events or sharing keys.
- Budget for operations, not just software: AzuraCast is free software, but a VPS or dedicated host may have costs, and someone still needs to maintain the server and relay. No comparable hosting or relay prices are established here.
