The right setup depends on what you mean by “gaming video”: live gameplay must be captured and encoded continuously, while prerecorded gameplay footage can be sent from a cloud service. YouTube does not run a game or capture gameplay for you.
Choose the workflow: live gameplay or prerecorded video
Live gameplay
A live gameplay stream needs a computer or other suitable system that can run the game, capture its output, and encode the feed. You can use an encoder other than OBS, but the game source, encoder, power, and network connection must remain available throughout the broadcast. A capture card can bring video into a system; it does not, by itself, replace the encoder.
Prerecorded gaming footage
If you want to loop recorded gameplay rather than broadcast a game as it is being played, a cloud service can send stored video to YouTube without keeping a local encoder running. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Gyre as a cloud tool for streaming prerecorded videos 24/7; that listing does not establish that it supports continuous live game capture. Check any service’s current input, looping, recovery, rights, and pricing terms before relying on it.

Check YouTube’s live-stream eligibility
- The channel must be verified and must not have had live-streaming restrictions in the previous 90 days.
- You must be at least 16 years old to livestream.
- Review YouTube’s current live-streaming eligibility and restrictions before scheduling a broadcast.
Set up a non-OBS encoder for live gameplay
- Choose a compatible encoder. Use YouTube’s encoder directory to find software or hardware options, then check the encoder maker’s current documentation for YouTube support and confirmation that it can use your actual source, such as a game capture or capture-card input. YouTube notes that listed products are made by third parties, not YouTube.
- Create the broadcast in YouTube Studio. Open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream. Select the stream type and settings that fit your broadcast.
- Copy the connection details into the encoder. YouTube provides a stream URL and stream key. Enter them in the corresponding encoder fields; the key functions like a password, so anyone who obtains it may be able to send video to your stream. Do not publish it or share it in screenshots, chat, or public documents. See YouTube’s stream-key guidance.
- Match the encoder settings to YouTube’s guidance. Configure a protocol, codec, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframe interval supported by both YouTube and your encoder. Recommended settings are detailed below.
- Start with a test broadcast. Use representative gameplay motion and audio. Confirm the Live Control Room preview looks right, then monitor stream health before treating the setup as ready for a long run.
Recommended YouTube encoder settings
YouTube’s live encoder settings guidance, accessed in 2026, recommends RTMP or RTMPS; supported video codecs include H.264, H.265 (HEVC), and AV1. It lists frame rates up to 60 fps, AAC or MP3 audio, constant bitrate (CBR), and a recommended keyframe interval of 2 seconds, not exceeding 4 seconds. These are ingestion recommendations, not a promise that every encoder supports every combination or that a particular setting will look good on every connection.

Use these as YouTube’s H.264 ingestion recommendations, not as universal settings for HEVC or AV1. If your connection cannot sustain the selected bitrate, lower the output resolution or frame rate rather than letting the encoder exceed available upload capacity. YouTube’s live encoder settings page has the current recommendations.

Make the connection reliable enough for a long broadcast
- Leave bandwidth headroom. YouTube advises that total stream bitrate must fit within available upload bandwidth and recommends about 20% spare capacity above the total streaming bitrate. Its streaming tips explain the network guidance.
- Test under realistic conditions. Run a test with typical gameplay movement and audio, check the preview, and monitor stream health. A static test image may not reveal issues that appear during fast motion or a more complex scene.
- Plan for local interruptions. For a DIY live-gameplay setup, the source system, encoder, power, and network all need to stay available. A backup internet connection or power source can reduce some risks, but these are practical precautions, not YouTube requirements or guarantees of uninterrupted streaming.
Plan the archive separately from the live broadcast
YouTube’s cited encoder instructions say streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. Do not assume that a single 24-hour broadcast will be preserved as one complete automatic archive. If you need a full recording, make a separate recording plan and verify the resulting archive after the broadcast.
Copyright and channel-policy checks
Streaming gameplay does not automatically grant rights to every element in the feed. Check the rights for game footage, music, overlays, and any other material you add; a game’s publisher may set its own streaming rules, and music can have separate rights. YouTube’s live eligibility and community rules also apply. Review the relevant rights and policies before leaving a stream unattended, and do not treat a successful test as proof that all content is cleared.

Common problems and fixes
- YouTube receives no video: Confirm the encoder is using the current stream URL and key for the correct broadcast, and verify that the selected protocol and codec are supported by both sides.
- The preview is unstable or the stream drops: Check upload capacity against total bitrate, including the recommended headroom. Reduce bitrate, resolution, or frame rate if the connection cannot sustain the chosen output; inspect stream health and test again.
- The video looks poor during fast gameplay: Test at the intended output settings with representative motion. Confirm the encoder is actually sending the selected resolution and frame rate, and that the upload connection can sustain its bitrate.
- The 24-hour replay is incomplete or missing: The cited automatic archive guidance applies to streams under 12 hours. Use a separate recording and archive plan for a full-day broadcast.
- A prerecorded-video service cannot capture the game live: A tool designed to loop uploaded footage is not necessarily a live gameplay encoder. Confirm the source workflow before subscribing; live capture needs a system or service capable of rendering or receiving the live game feed.
