Test the preview, audio, and playback before going live. A continuous broadcast is not the same as a guaranteed replay archive, and YouTube does not guarantee uninterrupted 24/7 operation.
Before you set up the stream
Confirm your channel can go live
YouTube’s live-streaming tips say the channel must be verified and must not have had livestream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time livestream activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable access and check eligibility before planning a launch. See YouTube’s live streaming tips and encoder setup guidance.

Clear rights to every video and sound
Use footage and audio you own or have permission to use for the intended worldwide YouTube broadcast. YouTube’s livestream terms require the provider to have necessary rights, including music licensing rights, and to comply with Community Guidelines and applicable laws.
YouTube scans live streams for third-party matches. A match can replace the stream with a placeholder, and continued use can lead to interruption or termination. A license alone may not prevent a Content ID interruption: YouTube says a rights holder may need to add your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams before broadcasting.

Build a looping playlist in OBS
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. OBS’s VLC Video source requires VLC. If you use 64-bit OBS, install the matching 64-bit version of VLC. See the OBS media sources guide.
- Prepare your clips. Put the fireplace videos in the order you want them to play, and make sure you have the rights to both the footage and any audio. Check that the files play properly before adding them.
- Add a VLC Video source. In OBS, add a VLC Video source to the scene you will stream. Add the clips to its playlist in the intended sequence.
- Set playback behavior. Enable Loop Playlist so the list restarts when it reaches the end. Leave shuffle off for a predictable sequence; enable it only if you deliberately want clips in a changing order.
- Check the scene. Confirm that the video fills the intended frame and that the audio is audible at an appropriate level. Watch the source play through clip changes; a black frame, missing audio, or a file that fails to load should be fixed before connecting to YouTube.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or schedule an encoder stream. In YouTube Studio, open Live Control Room and create or schedule a stream using the encoder workflow. YouTube’s current steps are in Create a YouTube live stream with an encoder.
- Copy the stream URL and key. In YouTube’s live stream settings, copy the encoder URL and stream key into OBS’s stream settings. YouTube explains these settings in Manage live stream settings.
- Protect the key. Treat the stream key like a password: do not publish or share it. If it is exposed, reset it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the replacement.
- Start the encoder and inspect the preview. Start streaming from OBS, then wait for the YouTube preview. Confirm picture and audio, and check that the stream is accessible from the channel or watch page and on mobile. YouTube advises monitoring stream quality and checking access before going live in its live streaming tips.
- Go live in YouTube Studio. Once the preview and sound are correct, start the broadcast in Live Control Room if the event requires that step. Keep an eye on OBS and the YouTube stream rather than assuming the feed will run without interruption.
Plan for continuous viewing and replay separately
A 24/7 stream is a continuous-broadcast goal, not a YouTube uptime guarantee. The official setup and tips pages do not promise uninterrupted operation for an indefinite stream or specify a guaranteed maximum runtime. A dropped connection, encoder fault, or platform interruption may require attention.
Do not assume a single 24-hour stream will be preserved as a complete replay. YouTube says streams under 12 hours can be automatically archived and warns that streams longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If keeping a replay matters, plan deliberate shorter broadcasts and make a local recording backup rather than relying on YouTube to split or retain a long session. See Archive live streams and the encoder streaming guidance.

Equipment choices and practical trade-offs
OBS with VLC is the documented software route for controlling a playlist. YouTube also describes hardware encoders as an option, particularly for higher-production streams, but the cited guidance does not establish a required computer model or minimum specification for a fireplace loop. A dedicated streaming computer is optional; start with suitable equipment you already have.
| Approach | What it offers | What to consider |
|---|---|---|
| Existing computer with OBS and VLC | Playlist playback and loop controls in OBS using a VLC Video source. | The computer and connection must remain available for the feed, and you need to monitor and respond to faults. |
| Hardware encoder | A hardware-based way to send an encoder feed to YouTube Live. | YouTube documents it as an option, not a requirement; the cited materials do not establish that it guarantees uptime or provide a specific device recommendation. |
Copyright and monetization limits to understand
Looping does not make content safe to use
Only broadcast material you are entitled to use. A repeated fireplace clip or background track can still trigger a third-party match. If you have licensed content, confirm whether the rights holder must allowlist your channel for live Content ID use before you start.

A loop is not a promise of monetization
YouTube’s channel monetization policies apply to livestreams and identify repetitive or mass-produced material under its “inauthentic content” policy. Whether a particular channel or stream passes review is not established by the policy page. Eligible monetized streams may earn from ads, Super Chat or Super Stickers, and channel memberships, but ad slots are not guaranteed to serve an ad; see Monetize your live stream.
Troubleshooting a fireplace playlist stream
- The VLC source is missing or will not load: Confirm VLC is installed and that its architecture matches OBS; OBS specifically calls for 64-bit VLC with 64-bit OBS. Recheck that the playlist points to playable files.
- The playlist stops at the last clip: Open the VLC Video source settings and enable Loop Playlist. Check that the source contains the full intended list.
- Clips play in an unexpected order: Turn off shuffle if you want a fixed sequence, then arrange the files in the source playlist in the desired order.
- YouTube does not show a preview: Check that OBS is using the current YouTube encoder URL and stream key, and confirm live streaming is enabled for the channel. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours.
- The preview has no sound or picture: Inspect the OBS scene and VLC source, then check the preview before going live. Verify that each clip plays and that the intended audio is present.
- The stream is interrupted after starting: Check OBS, the connection, and YouTube Live Control Room. If YouTube reports a copyright match, resolve rights and allowlisting with the rights holder; do not simply restart the same unapproved material.
- The broadcast ends but no complete replay appears: YouTube warns that streams over 12 hours may not be captured. Use shorter planned sessions and a local recording backup when preserving the full program is important.
