How to Run a 24/7 Fireplace Live Stream on YouTube from a VPS

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You can loop prerecorded fireplace footage from a VPS to YouTube Live with FFmpeg: enable live streaming for your channel, copy the RTMPS server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio, then run FFmpeg with a real-time input loop. You must keep the VPS process and connection healthy; a VPS alone does not guarantee an uninterrupted 24/7 stream.

What you need before starting

  • A YouTube channel verified for live streaming, with no live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream enablement can take up to 24 hours, so request it ahead of your planned start. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
  • A VPS that can encode your chosen video profile and sustain its outbound bitrate. No universal CPU, memory, or network minimum is established for this setup; capacity depends on the source and encoding settings.
  • A prerecorded video file that you have the rights to broadcast, including any music or other audio it contains.
  • FFmpeg installed on the VPS, plus the RTMPS server URL and stream key for your YouTube broadcast.

YouTube’s live-streaming policies also apply: follow the Community Guidelines and make sure you have the necessary rights to the footage and audio.

Set up the YouTube stream

  1. Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create or schedule an encoder stream.
  2. Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that stream. Use the RTMPS details YouTube provides; YouTube recommends RTMPS, which encrypts the connection. Its developer documentation specifies the RTMPS ingestion endpoint, application path, and port 443. See YouTube’s RTMPS ingestion guide.
  3. Keep the stream key secret. Do not put it in a public script repository, screenshot, or log. If it is exposed, replace or reset it in YouTube Studio before continuing.

Choose a video profile and bitrate

For a relatively static fireplace scene, 720p30 or 1080p30 can be sensible starting profiles, but choose based on the source file, the VPS’s encoding capacity, and sustained outbound bandwidth. Select resolution, codec, and bitrate together rather than raising one setting in isolation.

  • YouTube supports H.264, H.265, and AV1 video, and AAC or MP3 audio for encoder streams.
  • Use constant bitrate (CBR) and a two-second keyframe interval; YouTube advises that keyframes should not be more than four seconds apart.
  • Use YouTube’s current encoder settings and bitrate table to choose a target for your exact resolution, frame rate, and codec. The published 1080p30 bitrate values have appeared inconsistently across localized or cached versions, so do not rely on a single figure without checking the current table.
  • Test at the intended resolution and bitrate. YouTube recommends checking the stream preview and monitoring stream health and messages during the broadcast.

Run FFmpeg on the VPS

This example loops fireplace.mp4, paces the file in real time, encodes H.264 at 30 fps, and sends the result to an RTMPS endpoint. It is an illustrative starting point, not a tested command or a guarantee of compatibility:

ffmpeg -stream_loop -1 -re -i fireplace.mp4
-c:v libx264 -preset veryfast -tune stillimage
  -r 30 -g 60 -keyint_min 60 -sc_threshold 0
  -b:v 2500k -maxrate 2500k -bufsize 5000k -pix_fmt yuv420p
  -c:a aac -b:a 128k -ar 44100
  -f flv "rtmps://YOUR_INGEST_HOST/YOUR_PATH/YOUR_STREAM_KEY"

Replace the example RTMPS URL with the exact server URL and stream-key path YouTube shows for your broadcast. Confirm that the installed FFmpeg build supports the selected options and encoder. The official FFmpeg protocol documentation covers its streaming protocol support and RTMP URL usage.

  • -stream_loop -1 repeats the input indefinitely; -re reads it at real-time speed instead of sending it as fast as possible.
  • -g 60 at 30 fps sets a 60-frame, two-second GOP. The matching -keyint_min 60 and disabled scene-cut keyframes help keep the interval consistent.
  • The example’s 2500 kbps video target is only a starting value. Change bitrate and buffer settings to match the selected profile, codec, and available network capacity.
  • The command includes AAC audio. For a silent visual, do not simply assume that removing audio options will be accepted for every profile; check the YouTube preview and stream health. If you add an audio bed, make sure it is licensed for this broadcast.

Test, monitor, and keep the VPS process alive

  1. Start a test broadcast and inspect the Live Control Room preview before sharing the stream publicly. Confirm that the video plays smoothly and any intended audio is present.
  2. Watch YouTube’s stream-health status and messages during the test and live session. Fix warnings before relying on the stream for a long run.
  3. Monitor FFmpeg’s exit status and logs, VPS outbound connectivity, and available disk space if you are saving a local recording.
  4. Configure your VPS service manager or other process supervision to handle a crashed encoder and planned restarts. Test how the process behaves when the network drops or YouTube disconnects. FFmpeg’s TCP keepalive options can help detect dead peers, but they do not provide automatic recovery or guarantee a working reconnect.

A VPS does not remove operational work: the encoder can stop, the connection can fail, and YouTube does not promise uninterrupted 24/7 uptime. The cited platform and FFmpeg documentation do not establish a universal VPS specification or a tested restart configuration for this use case.

Plan around YouTube archives and copyright

YouTube says streams under 12 hours may be archived automatically; a stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured at all. If you need a dependable copy, record locally as well. A local recording is separate from YouTube’s archive and requires enough VPS disk space and a plan to retrieve or retain the file. See YouTube’s live-stream archive guidance.

Only stream fireplace footage, music, and other audio that you are authorized to rebroadcast. A video being available online, or being described as “royalty free,” is not by itself proof that your intended live use is permitted. Check the license terms for commercial use, livestreaming, attribution, and any geographic or duration limits.

Common problems and fixes

Symptom Likely cause What to check
You cannot start an encoder stream The channel is not eligible or live streaming has not finished enabling. Check channel verification and live-stream restrictions. For first-time enablement, allow up to 24 hours after requesting access.
YouTube does not receive the stream The RTMPS endpoint, application path, key, or port is wrong, or the VPS cannot reach the endpoint. Copy the RTMPS server details and key again from the correct Live Control Room stream, confirm the endpoint uses the provided path and port 443, and inspect FFmpeg logs and VPS connectivity.
The stream appears choppy or unhealthy The VPS may not sustain the encode, bitrate, or network load; settings may not match the source or YouTube profile. Review Live Control Room stream-health messages. Reduce the target profile or bitrate if necessary, and compare your settings with YouTube’s current encoder table.
The video or audio is missing The input may not contain the expected track, or the chosen output profile may not match what YouTube receives. Check the source file’s streams, FFmpeg output, and YouTube preview. If using added music, verify its license.
The stream stops after running for a while FFmpeg may have exited, the VPS connection may have failed, or YouTube may have dropped ingestion. Check process status and logs, network availability, and service supervision. Test reconnect and restart behavior instead of assuming keepalive will recover the stream.
The broadcast is missing from archives A stream longer than 12 hours may not be captured as an archive. Keep an independent local recording if the archive matters, or plan shorter sessions with managed restarts.

Costs and trade-offs

A VPS-based stream gives you control over the encoder process and can use software encoding without a separate hardware encoder, but you are responsible for server capacity, bandwidth, monitoring, restarts, and storage for any local recording. YouTube recognizes software and hardware encoders; neither is mandatory for this workflow. RTMPS is the recommended ingestion choice for a standard encoder stream.

For a continuous broadcast, one long session reduces planned restarts but may not be archived if it exceeds 12 hours. Shorter sessions improve the chance of automatic archiving but require planned restarts and continuity management. In either case, test the operational plan before relying on it.
