A VPS is not automatically OBS-compatible because it has a certain CPU or memory allocation. Check the graphics and display requirements, test the full stream workload, and plan for recovery and recording before relying on it.
Can OBS run on a Linux VPS?
Yes, if the virtual machine provides what OBS needs and can sustain the workload. OBS lists OpenGL 3.3 and an X window system or Wayland for Linux. Its CPU requirements vary with the encoder, resolution, frame rate, and scene complexity; meeting the baseline requirements does not guarantee that a system can stream reliably.
A conventional small, headless VPS may not have the graphics or display stack OBS expects. Before choosing a host, ask whether the guest system can provide OpenGL 3.3 and an X or Wayland session accessible to OBS. If you plan to use a virtual display or desktop, validate that setup for the specific Linux distribution and provider: there is no universal configuration established by the cited OBS guidance. OBS lists Flatpak and Ubuntu among its project-maintained Linux installation options. OBS system requirements and Linux installation guidance are useful checks.
Check before provisioning
- Confirm the provider’s Linux image and graphics/display support, including OpenGL 3.3 and X or Wayland availability to the OBS process.
- Estimate encoding needs using the actual resolution, frame rate, scenes, filters, and chosen encoder; then load-test the final setup.
- Verify sustained outbound network capacity and a stable route to YouTube’s ingest endpoint, not just the advertised peak bandwidth.
- Confirm how the VPS behaves during reboot and whether you can monitor OBS, logs, and stream health.
Set up YouTube and OBS
1. Enable live streaming and create a broadcast
If the channel has never streamed live, enable YouTube Live in advance. Initial activation can take up to 24 hours. In YouTube Live Control Room, create or select a stream and obtain its server URL and stream key. Set the broadcast’s privacy and schedule in YouTube Studio. For a scheduled broadcast, YouTube may require you to wait for the preview and then click “Go live.” See YouTube’s live streaming setup guidance.

2. Enter the ingest details in OBS
In OBS, open Settings → Stream, select YouTube if available, and enter or connect the account as appropriate. Alternatively, choose a custom service and use the server URL and stream key from Live Control Room. OBS sends the stream directly to the streaming service rather than through OBS-operated streaming servers.
Treat the stream key like a password. Do not expose it in screenshots, public tutorials, shell history, or a repository. If it is exposed, replace it in YouTube Studio and update OBS with the new key.
3. Choose output settings for YouTube
Use YouTube’s current encoder guidance for the resolution and frame rate you intend to send. For RTMP or RTMPS, YouTube recommends H.264, constant bitrate (CBR), and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Choose a bitrate the VPS can sustain steadily rather than one that only fits its nominal bandwidth. OBS’s Auto-Configuration Wizard can help establish a starting profile, but check the result against YouTube’s current requirements and the host’s capacity. 4. Test the real stream before depending on it
Run an unlisted or private test using representative church audio and video movement. Check YouTube’s stream health and OBS’s dropped-frame counter while the VPS is under the same conditions expected during normal operation. OBS identifies dropped frames as a connection-stability or bitrate problem. Its troubleshooting guidance suggests about 75% of total upload speed as an initial bitrate ceiling when diagnosing drops; this is a starting point, not a guarantee for every provider or route.

Make the stream resilient enough for continuous use
A process that starts once is not a complete 24/7 operating plan. Consider what happens if the network drops, OBS exits, the VPS reboots, a key is rotated, YouTube changes the broadcast lifecycle, or a video or audio source becomes stale. Test each relevant failure mode on the chosen host before relying on unattended operation.

- Use process supervision and restart behavior only after validating them with the distribution, display session, and OBS configuration.
- Keep logs and alerts that help an operator identify a stopped process, failed connection, or silent source.
- Document who can access YouTube Live Control Room, update credentials, and restore the stream.
- Re-test after changes to the VPS image, OBS version, scenes, stream key, or YouTube broadcast setup.
OBS and YouTube documentation do not certify a particular systemd service, virtual-display arrangement, watchdog, or restart policy as a universal unattended setup. Treat those pieces as host-specific engineering that must be verified, not as a guaranteed recovery recipe.
Plan recording and archives separately
YouTube’s documentation says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived. A continuous 24/7 broadcast exceeds that duration, so do not assume YouTube will create one complete automatic archive of the entire feed. If the church needs a full recording, arrange separate recording and archive handling, and test that the chosen VPS has sufficient storage and operational capacity. Troubleshoot common VPS and OBS problems
OBS will not start or shows a display/graphics error
Check whether the running environment has OpenGL 3.3 and a usable X or Wayland session. A headless VPS may lack the needed display environment even if its CPU and memory appear sufficient. Verify the provider’s capabilities and the chosen distribution’s setup rather than assuming a virtual display will work without configuration.

The stream has dropped frames
Check sustained upload capacity and connection stability, then lower the bitrate and test again. OBS’s 75%-of-total-upload-speed suggestion is an initial troubleshooting ceiling only. If drops continue, try a different YouTube ingest server and compare stream-health indicators.
YouTube shows no preview or the broadcast is not live
Confirm the server URL and stream key in OBS match the selected broadcast in Live Control Room. If the broadcast is scheduled, check whether YouTube is waiting for preview and an operator to click “Go live.” For a channel’s first live stream, allow for activation that can take up to 24 hours.
The stream stops after a reboot or OBS exit
Check VPS boot behavior, OBS process supervision, logs, and display-session availability. Test restart and alerting behavior on this exact host; no generic unattended recovery setup is established by OBS or YouTube’s cited documentation.

The church cannot find one complete 24-hour archive
YouTube documents automatic archiving for streams under 12 hours, not a guaranteed single complete archive of a longer continuous stream. Use a separate recording and archive workflow if a complete record is required.
