Yes, most 32-bit Linux games can continue running with a 64-bit Steam client—but only if the host system still provides 32-bit user-space support. Keep a supported 64-bit distribution, enable its multilib or i386 repositories, install both 64-bit and 32-bit graphics libraries, and let Steam supply the appropriate Linux runtime. Windows games use a separate path through Proton.
The practical distinction is whether a title is a native Linux binary or a Windows build. Native games load Linux ELF libraries directly; Proton games run through a Wine-based compatibility environment. The troubleshooting steps overlap, but their dependencies do not.

What the 64-bit Steam change actually means
A 64-bit Steam client does not make every game 64-bit. Steam itself can run as an x86_64 process while launching older games that require an i386 or other 32-bit loader, libraries, and graphics interfaces.

There is also a distribution-age requirement. Valve stopped supporting Linux distributions with glibc older than 2.31 on August 15, 2025. A machine below that baseline needs a distribution upgrade rather than a collection of copied libraries.
Steam Linux Runtime can supply controlled user-space components, but it is not a replacement for the host kernel, a working GPU driver, or the host’s 32-bit graphics entry points. Proton similarly bundles much of its Windows-compatibility environment without eliminating those host requirements.
First identify which build the game uses
Before changing packages, determine whether Steam is launching a native Linux executable or a Windows executable through Proton. The store page and the game’s library metadata normally indicate supported operating systems, but installed files and launch output are useful confirmation.
Native Linux build
A native title contains a Linux ELF executable. Its dynamic loader resolves Linux shared libraries on the host or inside the selected Steam Linux Runtime. A 32-bit ELF needs a 32-bit loader and matching 32-bit libraries even when the desktop, kernel, and Steam process are 64-bit.

Windows build through Proton
A Windows title uses Proton, Valve’s Steam-integrated compatibility tool. Proton creates a per-game prefix and translates Windows APIs for Linux. Its files and prefix should be treated separately from a native installation; switching builds can change configuration, shader caches, saves, and mod locations.
If a game offers both builds, test them independently. Native may have simpler file access or mod support, while Proton may have better game-specific compatibility. There is no universal rule that one path is faster or more reliable.
Requirements before migration
Use a supported 64-bit distribution
Install a currently supported 64-bit release whose glibc meets Valve’s 2.31 minimum. Check the distribution’s own release support and package repositories rather than downloading a library built for another release. Mixing glibc or graphics packages from unrelated distributions can make the desktop, package manager, or Steam itself unbootable.
Keep multilib or i386 enabled
On Debian, Ubuntu, and Mint, enable the i386 architecture and refresh package indexes. A typical architecture step is:

sudo dpkg --add-architecture i386After that, install the distribution’s 32-bit OpenGL, Vulkan, audio, and other runtime packages required by Steam and the specific game, alongside their 64-bit counterparts. Package names differ by release, so select packages from the same distribution repositories and verify that the package manager is installing the :i386 variant where applicable.
On distributions that use a different package system, enable the native multilib repository and follow that release’s package names. Do not copy Debian or Ubuntu libraries into another distribution. The goal is a matched pair of 64-bit and 32-bit user-space interfaces from one supported release.
Install both widths of the graphics stack
The GPU driver must expose 64-bit and 32-bit OpenGL and, when needed, Vulkan libraries. Installing only a 64-bit driver is a common reason for a game that once worked to stop at launch after a cleanup. The kernel module, firmware, compositor, and user-space libraries must also agree about the GPU and driver version.

- Record the game’s build. Note whether Steam lists a Linux build, a Windows build, or both. For a native game, record whether the installed executable is 32-bit. For a Windows game, note the Proton version currently selected, if any.
- Bring the base system to a supported release. Update through the distribution’s normal upgrade path. Confirm that glibc is at least 2.31 and that the machine remains a 64-bit installation. Do not satisfy the requirement by replacing one system library manually.
- Enable multilib. Add the 32-bit architecture or multilib repository using the distribution’s documented method. Refresh package metadata, then install 32-bit graphics, audio, and runtime libraries together with the 64-bit versions Steam and the game need.
- Verify the GPU userspace. Check that the installed driver provides both 64-bit and 32-bit OpenGL or Vulkan interfaces. If the game needs Vulkan, install the distribution’s 32-bit Vulkan loader and matching driver package; a 64-bit loader alone cannot service a 32-bit process.
- Let Steam install the Linux Runtime. For a native title, allow Steam to download or select the runtime associated with that game. Runtime files are stored in the Steam library when required. Do not delete them while a game is being tested.
- Select Proton for a Windows build. Open the game’s Steam library page, choose Properties, open Compatibility, enable the option to force a specific compatibility tool, and choose a Proton version. Restart the game after changing the setting so Steam recreates or updates the prefix as needed.
- Keep versions isolated. If both native and Windows builds are available, use separate launch settings and, when practical, separate installation directories or prefixes. Back up saves before changing build type or removing a prefix.
- Test before global changes. Launch with the selected runtime or Proton version and capture the first error. Change one variable at a time instead of altering global environment variables or replacing system libraries.
Steam Linux Runtime: what it solves and what it cannot
Steam Linux Runtime is a controlled set of user-space libraries that Steam downloads when a game or Proton version requires it. It reduces dependence on the exact versions of common libraries installed by the host distribution, which is especially useful for older native games.

Valve’s current Steam Runtime 4 is based on Debian 13, known as trixie. The runtime’s controlled environment can supply compatible user-space components, but it still relies on the host to provide a supported 64-bit kernel, a functioning graphics driver, device access, and the required 32-bit GPU interface. It cannot manufacture a missing kernel module or repair a broken Vulkan installation.
Use the runtime selected by Steam first. Replacing runtime files with copies from another installation can create loader conflicts that are harder to diagnose than the original missing package.
Native Linux versus Proton

Diagnose a failed launch
Confirm the executable architecture
Use file on the actual game binary or inspect Steam’s launch output:
file /path/to/gameAn output identifying a 32-bit ELF means the 32-bit loader and its dependencies must be present. A 64-bit ELF does not prove that the game is independent of 32-bit support; launchers, helper processes, codecs, anti-cheat modules, or graphics libraries may still be 32-bit.
Find unresolved shared libraries
Run the dependency check against the native executable:
ldd /path/to/binary | grep 'not found'Each missing entry identifies a library family to install from the distribution’s repositories. Match the architecture shown by the binary and install the corresponding 32-bit package rather than downloading an arbitrary file with the same name. An empty result does not rule out a missing Vulkan driver, a runtime selection problem, or a failure inside a launcher.
Steam starts, but the native game does not
- Re-select the game’s Steam Linux Runtime and allow Steam to reacquire it.
- Confirm that the 32-bit OpenGL or Vulkan driver is installed, not only the 64-bit package.
- Check the game’s launch output for a missing loader, audio library, or permission error.
- Test with the game’s original runtime before changing environment variables.
Steam starts, but Proton fails immediately
- Open Properties > Compatibility and explicitly choose a Proton version rather than relying on a stale per-game selection.
- Allow Steam to recreate or update the game’s Proton prefix after the change.
- Use Proton’s per-game logging or launch options to capture the failure. Keep the option scoped to that game.
- Verify that the host still exposes 32-bit graphics libraries; Proton’s bundled user-space files do not replace them.
The error mentions Vulkan
Check three separate layers: the GPU is supported by the installed driver, the 64-bit Vulkan loader works, and the 32-bit Vulkan loader and driver are installed. A game can report a generic Vulkan failure when only the 32-bit layer is absent. Reinstall matching packages from the same distribution release, then restart Steam.

Steam itself will not start
Check the host glibc version against Valve’s minimum. If the distribution is below the supported baseline, upgrade to a maintained release using the distribution’s normal upgrade process. Installing an isolated copy of glibc beside the system version is not a safe workaround for Steam.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Removing all i386 or multilib packages. This may leave a 64-bit desktop intact while breaking older games, launchers, codecs, or Proton’s graphics path.
- Installing only the 64-bit GPU driver. Both driver widths are required for the cases Valve documents.
- Copying libraries from another distribution. ABI-compatible names do not guarantee compatible versions, dependencies, or loader behavior.
- Assuming the runtime supplies everything. Steam Linux Runtime supplies controlled user-space libraries, not the host kernel driver or a missing 32-bit GPU interface.
- Changing
LD_LIBRARY_PATHglobally. A global override can make Steam, desktop applications, and unrelated games load the wrong library. Use per-game launch options only when a documented diagnostic requires them. - Deleting runtime files or Proton prefixes as a first step. Removal destroys useful state and may erase configuration or saves. Back up data and collect logs before resetting a prefix.
- Assuming native is always better than Proton. Compare the two builds for this particular game, including graphics behavior, updates, saves, mods, and diagnostic output.
A practical decision framework
Choose the native build first when
- The game’s Linux build launches with the current Steam Linux Runtime.
- You need native Linux paths for files, mods, or tools.
- The title’s native renderer behaves correctly with your installed driver.
Try Proton when
- The Windows build is the actively maintained version and the native port is broken or incomplete.
- The native executable has an unresolved dependency that the supported distribution cannot provide, while Proton has a known working configuration.
- The game’s updates, controller support, or compatibility fixes target the Windows build.
Keep the native build when
- It has reliable saves and mods that would require relocating into a Proton prefix.
- It avoids a Proton-specific graphics or launcher issue.
- Its runtime and host dependencies are already supported by the distribution.
What to preserve during an upgrade
Before changing the distribution, graphics driver, Steam Runtime, or Proton version, back up game saves, configuration files, and mod data. Record the current launch options and the game’s selected compatibility tool. A clean upgrade should preserve the Steam library, but a prefix reset or build switch can change where user data is stored.
Keep a short diagnostic record: game build, executable architecture, distribution release, GPU driver version, selected runtime or Proton version, and the first missing-library or Vulkan error. That information makes it possible to reverse one change without guessing which dependency was removed.
Bottom line
Steam moving to a 64-bit client does not end support for 32-bit Linux games. It changes the responsibility: the client is 64-bit, while the host still needs a supported 64-bit system plus the 32-bit glibc, graphics, audio, and runtime components required by older software. Enable multilib, keep both graphics-driver widths, use Steam Linux Runtime for native titles, and select Proton for Windows builds. When a launch fails, identify the executable architecture, locate missing libraries with ldd, verify the 32-bit graphics path, and change settings per game before attempting disruptive system-wide fixes.
