How do I stream my podcast in stereo on YouTube?
First identify where the finished podcast mix is made. The general signal path is:
Microphones and playback sources → mixer, DAW, or interface producing a stereo mix → stereo input or loopback on the streaming computer → OBS audio source and stereo output → YouTube Live.
The connection depends on your equipment and operating system; there is no single cable or interface arrangement that fits every setup. Keep the podcast mix as two distinct channels—left and right—from its source through OBS. YouTube supports mono, stereo, and 5.1 live ingestion, but other channel configurations may convert unreliably to stereo, so use a standard stereo output for a stereo podcast. If the mix comes from an external mixer or interface
Route the mixer or interface’s left and right program outputs to a stereo-capable input on the streaming computer. Depending on your gear, that may mean two line outputs connected to two line inputs, or a suitable stereo input path already built into the interface. In OBS, add the device carrying the finished mix. Check the input channel assignment so the left source reaches left and the right source reaches right.
If the mix is made inside a computer or DAW
A device with loopback can route computer playback or a DAW mix into OBS without sending it through external cables. The required setup depends on the device, drivers, operating system, and DAW. PreSonus documents a Studio One and OBS workflow on Windows using loopback, and describes a second-interface alternative for that particular workflow; it is not a universal requirement. How do I check that both stereo channels reach OBS?
- Add the actual mix source. In OBS, add the audio device or loopback stream that carries the finished podcast mix—not an unrelated microphone or desktop device.
- Keep the source and output stereo. OBS Studio defaults to Stereo, but confirm that the source channel assignment and stream output configuration have not been changed.
- Play a known stereo mix and watch the meters. OBS’s stereo meter shows the left channel first and the right channel second. Both should receive signal when the mix contains audio on both sides. If only the first meter moves, the source may be reaching OBS only on the left. OBS’s Audio Mixer Guide explains the meter order and default layout.
- Listen to a test stream on headphones. Make a private or unlisted test before going public. Verify left and right playback rather than relying on meters alone: meters show what reaches OBS, not how every downstream playback device will reproduce it.
Keep mono microphones centered without collapsing the mix
A mono microphone and a stereo program mix need different treatment. A mono mic intended to sound centered should be sent to both output channels. Focusrite describes assigning a mono input to both left and right outputs in its interface workflow. See Focusrite’s OBS setup guidance. Do not apply a mono mapping to the finished stereo podcast mix: that can remove its left-right differences.
What audio settings should I use for YouTube Live?
Set audio output for the ingest protocol you are using; do not combine protocol-specific recommendations as if they were one universal profile.

Use the HLS figures only when streaming with HLS. For other ingest modes, follow the relevant encoder guidance. A correct sample rate or bitrate cannot fix a left-right routing error, so confirm the channel path separately.
Do I need an audio interface with loopback?
Not necessarily. Choose routing hardware based on where the mix is made and what your current equipment can already do.

- External mixer’s stereo output: A USB audio interface with stereo line inputs is a reasonable option if the computer has no suitable stereo input.
- Mix produced inside the computer: Loopback support can provide a direct software route into OBS.
- Primary interface has no loopback: A second interface can be a fallback for some workflows, including the Windows Studio One example documented by PreSonus.
- Your current gear already provides the route: You do not need to buy another device just to stream in stereo.
Before choosing equipment, check stereo line input availability, loopback support, operating-system and driver compatibility, input/output count, and whether your mix originates in external hardware or computer software. Compatibility and setup vary by model and system; the cited guides do not establish one interface as suitable for every setup.

- Only the first OBS meter moves: The source may be mapped to the left channel only. Check the device’s channel assignment and cabling, then confirm the right channel receives signal.
- A stereo mix sounds centered or loses its width: The mix may have been mapped or summed to mono. Restore a stereo source path and avoid applying a mono-microphone mapping to the program mix.
- A mono mic is audible only on one side: Route that mono input to both output channels so it is centered.
- Both OBS meters move, but the test sounds wrong: Check the test playback with headphones and verify left and right separately. OBS metering confirms signal at its input, but does not prove all playback devices behave identically.
- Audio fails or converts unexpectedly after ingest: Confirm the output uses a supported channel layout—mono, stereo, or 5.1—and follow the settings for the ingest protocol in use.
