You can reset a YouTube stream key and update the matching RTMP destination in AWS Elemental MediaLive, but the official documentation does not guarantee that this cross-service change will keep an active broadcast uninterrupted. Treat it as a controlled rotation: prepare a change window, update the key in MediaLive, then verify the feed in YouTube before relying on it.
What changes during a key rotation
YouTube describes stream keys as “your YouTube stream’s password and address.” A channel owner or manager can reset a key in YouTube Live Control Room; editors and viewers cannot. Once reset, the new key must be copied into the encoder configuration.

For a MediaLive RTMP output, the destination server URL and stream name are separate fields. AWS describes the stream name as the application instance or stream key supplied by the destination operator. For YouTube, preserve the destination URL if it has not changed, and replace the corresponding stream-name value with the new YouTube key.

That explains the two sides of the change, but not whether applying it to a running output is seamless. AWS’s MediaLive update-channel reference accepts destination configuration, but does not promise that a destination update takes effect without interruption on an active channel. YouTube’s key-reset guidance likewise does not specify what happens to an already connected MediaLive session when its key is reset.

Before you change the key
- Schedule a controlled change window. Do not assume the current broadcast will remain connected while the new credential is applied.
- Confirm that the person making the change is a YouTube channel owner or manager with permission to reset the key.
- Securely record the existing MediaLive destination configuration so you can compare or restore the relevant values if needed. Never expose either key in logs, screenshots, tickets, or article examples.
- Identify every applicable RTMP destination and pipeline entry in the MediaLive output configuration. If both pipeline destinations are configured, account for both rather than updating only one.
- For a high-value event, avoid making the change during the event. AWS recommends starting a channel two hours before a high-value event to leave time for start, stop, and restart operations.
Rotate the key and update MediaLive
- Reset the key in YouTube. Open YouTube Live Control Room, select the Stream tab, and reset the current stream key. Copy the newly generated key securely. YouTube’s instructions are in Manage live stream settings.
- Find the MediaLive RTMP destination. In the relevant output destination configuration, identify the server URL and stream-name entry or entries. AWS explains these fields in Fields for the output destination.
- Replace the stream name with the new key. Keep the destination URL unchanged if YouTube has not supplied a different one. Update each applicable pipeline destination value that carries the key.
- Apply the destination change through the supported MediaLive channel update workflow or API. The AWS CLI reference documents destination configuration for
update-channel, but does not establish that changing it on a running channel is seamless. Confirm the state and update requirements for your channel configuration before applying the change. - Stop and restart only if your workflow requires it. Treat any required stop or restart as a planned interruption, not a zero-downtime rotation. AWS says most MediaLive cloud channels start in three minutes or less, and up to ten minutes is still normal; these are channel startup figures, not a prediction or guarantee of key-rotation recovery time. - Verify both sides. Confirm MediaLive is in the expected channel state, then check that YouTube is receiving the feed and reports healthy stream status. YouTube advises, “Test before you start your live stream,” and recommends monitoring stream health during the event. See Choose live encoder settings, bitrates, and resolutions.
Can this be done without downtime?
It is an objective, not an outcome established by the cited documentation. The official guidance covers resetting the YouTube key, configuring MediaLive’s RTMP destination, and updating channel configuration. It does not guarantee that a live MediaLive-to-YouTube connection can adopt a replacement key without disconnecting, nor does it describe a key-overlap period or YouTube reconnect behavior for this case.
If uninterrupted viewing is essential, validate the exact procedure in a representative environment before using it in production. Record whether the channel had to stop or restart, whether every pipeline destination was updated, how YouTube behaved during reconnection, the measured interruption, and whether rollback worked. Do not assume that a parallel stream or dual-key cutover is supported unless your own configuration and vendor guidance establish it.

Troubleshooting after the update
- YouTube does not receive the feed: Check that the new key was copied correctly into the stream-name field and that the destination URL remains correct. Avoid pasting the key into shared logs while checking it.
- MediaLive is not in the expected state: Review the channel update result and current channel state. If the workflow requires a restart, follow the planned stop/start procedure and allow for normal startup time rather than treating a delay as proof that the key is wrong.
- The stream is connected but unhealthy: Check YouTube’s stream-health indicators and the encoder settings guidance. YouTube’s troubleshooting page may help narrow down a live-feed issue: Troubleshoot your YouTube live stream.
- One pipeline works and another does not: Recheck the RTMP destination values for each applicable pipeline; a key update in only one destination can leave the other with stale credentials.
