1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesTo rotate a VLC playlist during a scheduled YouTube livestream, schedule the event in YouTube Studio, play the ordered playlist in VLC with repeat-all enabled, and route VLC’s audio and video into a YouTube-capable encoder. Send that encoder’s output to the event’s RTMPS server URL with its stream key. When YouTube’s preview appears, click Go live—starting the encoder and publishing the scheduled event are separate steps.
What you need to make the workflow work
- A saved VLC playlist containing media files that play correctly and are in the intended order.
- A scheduled event in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
- A YouTube-capable encoder to receive VLC’s playback and send it to YouTube. The available documentation establishes VLC playlist playback and a separate encoder workflow; it does not establish a supported VLC-only setup that sends directly to YouTube over RTMPS.
- An upload connection that can sustain the encoder’s chosen resolution, frame rate, and bitrate.
Think of the setup as two connected jobs: VLC rotates the content, while the encoder sends the resulting feed to YouTube. YouTube hosts the scheduled event and watch page; the playlist itself does not schedule or publish it.

Prepare and save the VLC playlist
Put clips in the intended order
- Open each video in VLC and check that it plays with the expected picture and sound.
- Add the files to a VLC playlist in the order you want viewers to see them.
- Save the playlist so you can reopen the same sequence for testing and broadcast.
Choose what repeats
VLC distinguishes between repeating the current item and repeating the entire playlist. For rotation through all clips, use repeat-all rather than repeat-current. Test the end of the playlist as well as the transitions between files: a playlist that plays once is not necessarily configured to cycle.
VideoLAN also documents a server-side VLM example for broadcasting successive inputs. It uses sout-keep to keep output from breaking when a media item ends, and its example sends the broadcast over HTTP to VLC receivers. That is useful for understanding continuous output across playlist items, but it is not a direct YouTube RTMPS configuration.

Schedule the YouTube livestream
- In YouTube Studio, open Create → Go Live.
- Select Manage and schedule a stream.
- Set the event’s visibility, title, and other metadata deliberately. Scheduling creates the event page, which you can share and promote; viewers can also set reminders.
- In the event’s Live Control Room settings, locate the stream URL and stream key. Use the RTMPS server URL provided for that event when available.
YouTube describes stream keys as “like your YouTube stream’s password and address.” They tell the encoder where to send the feed and allow YouTube to accept it. Keep the key private; it is not the public watch-page link. If it is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.
Route VLC playback through an encoder
- Open an encoder that supports YouTube streaming. Choose its YouTube or RTMPS preset if available; otherwise enter the server URL and stream key copied from the scheduled event.
- Add VLC’s playback as an encoder source. Depending on the encoder, that may mean selecting VLC as a media source or capturing its playback. Configure the path so both video and audio reach the encoder.
- Start VLC and load the saved playlist. Confirm in the encoder that it is receiving moving video and audible audio, not just a static frame or silent feed.
- Start the encoder’s outgoing stream. Wait for the scheduled event’s preview to appear in Live Control Room and check the stream health.
- When the preview is ready and the event should be public, click Go live in YouTube Studio. At the end, follow the scheduled-stream workflow: use End stream and stop the encoder as directed.
YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over a TLS/SSL connection, which provides encryption. Prefer the RTMPS URL supplied in Live Control Room, and do not share the stream key in screenshots, public notes, or chat.

Choose encoder settings that the connection can sustain
YouTube’s live guidance lists H.264 video, AAC or MP3 audio, constant-bitrate encoding, and a two-second keyframe interval; do not exceed four seconds. Recommended bitrate depends on resolution, frame rate, and codec, so consult YouTube’s current bitrate guidance for the format you intend to send rather than treating one bitrate as suitable for every stream.

- Choose a bitrate your upstream connection can sustain with room for normal variation.
- Use the encoder’s YouTube-oriented preset as a starting point, then verify the actual outgoing settings.
- If stream health is unstable, lower bitrate or resolution and test again before the event.
Test before the scheduled start
YouTube’s live tips recommend setting up at least two hours ahead and starting the encoder at least 15 minutes before the scheduled time. Treat those as planning guidance, not a guarantee that every setup will be ready in that time.

- Start the playlist and encoder early enough to inspect the full path from VLC to YouTube.
- Check the Live Control Room preview for picture, sound, motion, and stream health.
- Open the public or unlisted watch page as appropriate and confirm that the event details and visibility are correct.
- Test a transition between playlist items and, if time allows, confirm that repeat-all returns to the beginning of the list.
- Publish by clicking Go live when you are ready; do not assume the encoder starting by itself publishes the scheduled event.
Troubleshooting common problems
YouTube shows no incoming preview
- Confirm that the encoder is running and actually receiving VLC’s video and audio.
- Check that the encoder uses the RTMPS server URL from the correct scheduled event and the matching stream key.
- If the key may have leaked, reset it in Live Control Room and replace the old key in the encoder.
The playlist stops after one clip
- Check that VLC is set to repeat the entire playlist, not only the current item.
- Confirm the clips are present in the saved playlist and that each plays through to its end.
- If using a VLM broadcast configuration, note that VideoLAN’s example uses
sout-keepacross consecutive inputs. A VLM setup and VLC’s ordinary playlist-repeat controls are related approaches, not the same interface.
The preview is unstable or drops frames
- Lower the encoder bitrate or resolution to fit the available upload connection, then repeat the test.
- Verify that the encoder is sending the format and keyframe interval you selected.
- Test the entire playback-to-encoder path again before the event rather than relying on a playlist-only check.
The scheduled event exists, but viewers cannot see the stream
Creating the scheduled event and sending the encoder feed do not publish it automatically. Check that the preview has appeared, then click Go live in Live Control Room when you intend to publish.
