What you need before setting up the playlist
- OBS Studio to combine the playlist into a scene and encode the output for YouTube.
- VLC installed on the same computer. OBS’s VLC Video source depends on VLC libraries. Match the application architecture: 64-bit OBS requires 64-bit VLC. OBS VLC Video Source documentation.
- Video files you have permission to livestream, and a scene in which to place the source.
- A YouTube channel with access to YouTube Live and a stream configured in YouTube Studio’s Live Control Room.
The VLC source handles playlist playback inside OBS; it does not publish the playlist to YouTube by itself. OBS is the encoder that sends the finished scene to YouTube.

Add videos to an OBS VLC playlist
- Install OBS Studio and VLC. If you installed OBS before VLC and cannot find the VLC Video source, restart OBS after installing VLC.
- Open OBS and select the scene that should show the rotating videos. In the Sources panel, select + and choose VLC Video. If prompted, give the source a name and confirm.
- In the source properties, add the video files to its playlist. Use the add or browse control shown in the properties window to select your files. Arrange the items in the order you want if you plan to play them sequentially.
- Set the playlist behavior before going live. The main choices are Loop Playlist and Shuffle Playlist; their effects are explained below.
- Confirm the source is visible in the scene preview and that the intended scene is selected as the active output scene.
OBS’s documented VLC Video source defaults are Loop Playlist: On and Shuffle Playlist: Off. Check the settings in your own source rather than assuming they have not been changed. OBS VLC Video Source documentation.

Choose the playlist order and end behavior

These settings answer different questions: shuffle determines which item comes next; loop determines what happens after the last item. VLC’s separate repeat behavior repeats the current playlist item, while loop repeats the playlist at its end. Do not treat repeat-current-item and loop-the-list as interchangeable. Check what happens when the source is hidden
OBS’s Visibility Behaviour setting controls playback when the VLC source is not visible—for example, when you switch to a scene that does not contain it. The documented default is to stop the source when it becomes hidden and restart it when it becomes visible. Other behavior choices can let it continue or pause. OBS VLC Video Source documentation.
If the playlist must continue across scene changes, choose a behavior suited to that production and verify it in a rehearsal. Also confirm that the scene containing the source remains the active output when you expect the videos to appear. There is no single visibility setting established as right for every scene arrangement.
Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- In YouTube Studio, open the Live Control Room and create or select the stream you want to use.
- Copy the stream’s server URL and stream key from the Live Control Room. In OBS, open Settings > Stream, select YouTube if needed, and enter the server URL and stream key using the available service or custom-server fields.
- Apply the settings, return to the scene with the VLC Video source, and start streaming in OBS. This starts sending the encoder feed; it does not necessarily make a scheduled stream public immediately.
- For a scheduled stream, wait for the encoder preview to appear in YouTube’s Live Control Room, then select Go live when the preview and stream details are ready. Follow the current workflow displayed for your stream. YouTube Help: Create a live stream with an encoder.
- When finished, stop the encoder feed in OBS and end the stream in Live Control Room as applicable. YouTube Help says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived; check the current Live Control Room guidance because platform workflows can change. Rehearse before a public stream
Play through the actual files and scene changes in a private or unlisted rehearsal before a public event. Confirm the order, the loop at the end, audio and video playback, and whether the source behaves as intended when hidden and shown again. The official documentation describes the controls but does not guarantee gapless transitions or uninterrupted playback for every file format, file, and computer.
If any media comes from a network location, OBS exposes a network-caching control; its documented default is 400 ms. That is a control default, not a guaranteed remedy for buffering or a recommendation for every connection. Adjust only if your playback requires it, then rehearse again. Troubleshooting VLC playlist playback
- VLC Video is missing from the Sources menu: Install VLC and ensure its architecture matches OBS. For 64-bit OBS, install 64-bit VLC, then restart OBS and check again. OBS VLC Video Source documentation.
- The playlist stops at the last file: Check that Loop Playlist is on. This setting restarts the playlist after it runs out.
- The videos play in an unexpected order: Turn Shuffle Playlist off for listed order, then arrange the playlist items as required.
- Playback stops or restarts after switching scenes: Inspect Visibility Behaviour and verify that the intended scene is the active output. Rehearse the exact scene changes; the right behavior depends on the production.
- YouTube does not show the stream: Make sure OBS is sending the encoder feed and that the correct server URL and stream key were entered for the selected Live Control Room stream. Keep the videos eligible for YouTube Live
Only stream videos you own or have permission to use, including their music and other embedded material. A playlist setting cannot grant rights to copyrighted content. YouTube’s requirements and enforcement can change, so review the current rules that apply to your channel and content before broadcasting. Avoid assuming that repeating videos makes them original or automatically acceptable for monetization; eligibility is assessed under YouTube’s applicable policies.
