How to Rotate Podcast Episodes in a 24/7 YouTube Stream With a Text Playlist

Use FFmpeg’s concat demuxer to put podcast episodes in a text file and feed them to an encoder in the order listed. The text playlist controls sequence; it does not, by itself, make the stream repeat forever or recover after a failure. Those require separate looping and process-supervision decisions.

What the text playlist does—and what it does not

FFmpeg’s concat demuxer reads a text script of file directives and presents the listed media as one concatenated input. The files are played in sequence, with timestamps adjusted so the first begins at zero and each later file starts where the prior one ends. See the FFmpeg Formats Documentation.

This is not a playlist service or a complete 24/7 streaming system. You still need an FFmpeg output process that sends the resulting video and audio to YouTube, a way to repeat the sequence, and a plan to monitor and restart the process if it exits or loses its connection.

Prepare compatible episode files

Before creating the playlist, check that the episodes have compatible streams. The concat demuxer expects the files to have the same streams, including codecs and time bases. If they differ, standardize or re-encode them before concatenating; the appropriate encoding settings depend on your source files and the current requirements shown for your YouTube channel.

Duration information matters too. Incorrect durations can cause timestamp artifacts. FFmpeg’s documentation allows a duration directive to override a stored duration when you know it is wrong; use the actual duration for that file rather than guessing.

  • Confirm that each path points to the intended episode and that FFmpeg can read the file.
  • Compare stream layout and codecs across the episodes; resolve mismatches before the long-running stream.
  • Check for inaccurate duration metadata, especially if concatenated playback develops timing or transition problems.

Write the text playlist

Create a plain-text file such as /media/podcast/episodes.ffconcat. Put the version marker exactly on the first line, with no leading spaces or byte-order mark, then add one file directive per episode in the desired order:

ffconcat version 1.0
file '/media/podcast/episode-001.mp4'
file '/media/podcast/episode-002.mp4'
file '/media/podcast/episode-003.mp4'

Replace the example paths with the real paths on the machine that will run FFmpeg. The order of the directives is the playback order. Quote paths that contain spaces or special characters as appropriate for the concat file syntax documented by FFmpeg.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The concat demuxer’s safe option defaults to 1 and rejects unsafe paths. Absolute paths and certain other names may therefore be refused under the default. Do not assume the example with absolute paths will work unchanged: either arrange a safe relative-path layout, or deliberately choose and document the relevant FFmpeg option for your environment. Disabling the safety check changes what paths FFmpeg may access, so do so only when you understand and trust the playlist and its entries.

Connect the sequence to YouTube

The playlist is an input description, not an output command. An FFmpeg command must also select the playlist as input and configure the output for YouTube’s current ingest settings. There is no one reliable command or set of encoding flags for arbitrary podcast files: source streams, FFmpeg version, and channel-specific YouTube settings differ. Check the current settings in YouTube Live Control Room and validate the command with your own media before relying on it for a continuous broadcast.

YouTube supports encoder-based live streaming. Its current live-streaming eligibility guidance says the channel must be verified and must have had no live-streaming restrictions in the preceding 90 days. The same guidance requires compliance with YouTube’s Community Guidelines and Terms of Service. Eligibility and setup can change, so confirm the requirements and ingest information for your channel in Live Control Room.

YouTube’s Live Streaming API distinguishes the continuing incoming liveStream resource from the viewer-facing liveBroadcast event. Its documentation describes a 24/7-feed arrangement in which a broadcast can be completed without stopping the continuing feed. That is an API pattern, not a requirement that every channel create multiple broadcasts; see Understanding Broadcasts and Streams.

Make playback repeat and keep the process supervised

A finite list of episodes only describes a finite sequence. To keep a channel live beyond one pass, configure the outer playback and encoder workflow to repeat the sequence, and separately arrange for the process to be monitored and restarted if it stops. The playlist syntax itself does not supply either behavior.

For a self-hosted setup, that usually means running FFmpeg on a computer or server that remains powered and connected, then using an operating-system service or other process supervisor to restart the encoder after failure. A public example uses an Ubuntu VPS, separate text lists, FFmpeg output to YouTube RTMP ingest, and a system service configured to restart. It demonstrates one operational pattern, not an official YouTube recommendation or a guarantee of uninterrupted service: GitHub implementation notes.

Test the whole chain before leaving it unattended: confirm the episodes appear in the right order, the output reaches YouTube, and a stopped encoder is noticed and restarted as intended. A restart policy can relaunch a process; it cannot guarantee that the network, host, input files, or YouTube ingest will always be available.

Check music, speech, and other rights before going live

YouTube scans live streams for third-party content. If it detects a match, it may replace the stream with a placeholder and interrupt or terminate the stream if the material remains. A license alone may not prevent an interruption if the rights owner has not added your channel to its Content ID allowlist. Review YouTube’s copyright guidance for live streams before broadcasting.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Verify that you have the necessary rights to both audio and visual elements in every episode, including music, clips, artwork, and other third-party material. If a rights owner uses Content ID, ask whether your channel must be allowlisted for the planned live use. Permission to publish an episode is not automatically proof that the live-stream use is cleared.

Choose where the encoder runs

A local computer gives you direct access to local episode files, but it must stay on, connected, and able to run the encoder. A hosted server can keep the process running while your personal computer is off, but still needs setup, file access, monitoring, and maintenance. The cited Ubuntu VPS example shows one way to host the process; it does not establish a universal cost, reliability level, or best choice.

If you prefer a managed cloud workflow instead of maintaining an FFmpeg process, StreamNeo keeps a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos: upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It is an alternative to the DIY setup described above, not a way to broadcast from a camera.

Or let it run in the cloud

With StreamNeo, upload the episodes, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it loops uploaded videos and playlists in the cloud, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. Uploaded quality is preserved up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, without quality tiers. The first day is free with no card. Monthly pricing is $9.99 per month.
