How to Rotate MarkLogic Credentials and Review Privileged Accounts After a Suspected Compromise

After a suspected MarkLogic compromise, do not treat a password change as the whole response. Establish an authorized change path, preserve available evidence, inventory users and stored credentials, calculate each account’s effective privileges through role inheritance, rotate the affected MarkLogic passwords, rotate any external secrets separately, reduce unnecessary administrative access, and validate the result. MarkLogic’s documented controls cover these security-object, password, credential, and audit tasks, but they do not constitute a complete incident-response playbook for containment, forensics, eradication, recovery, or notification.

Start with an authorized response path

Use an account that already has the documented privileges required for security administration. Do not respond by assigning broad roles to a new account unless the incident process explicitly approves that change. MarkLogic’s admin role is exceptionally powerful: the Security Guide states that it has full authority to do everything in MarkLogic Server, regardless of permissions or privileges set. The same guide warns that assigning admin can permit adding or deleting users, adding or deleting documents, changing passwords, and other activities.

Coordinate the database change with the incident lead, the MarkLogic owner, and the application owners whose service identities may be affected. Before changing configuration, preserve the evidence that your organization’s incident procedure requires, such as relevant audit exports, system logs, configuration snapshots, and the time window under investigation. The MarkLogic documentation covered here does not prescribe a complete evidence-preservation method, so follow your established incident-response and legal-hold requirements.

  • Record who approved the change, which MarkLogic cluster and database are in scope, and the suspected compromise window.
  • Identify an authorized operator and a separate reviewer where your change-control process requires four-eyes approval.
  • Capture the current security configuration and audit settings before modifying them when doing so will not increase risk.
  • Schedule application-owner validation for service accounts before disabling or changing them.

Define the scope before rotating credentials

Build an inventory of every principal that could have been exposed: human users, service accounts, application identities, deployment accounts, automation identities, and accounts used by support or integration systems. Include credentials stored inside MarkLogic as well as passwords, certificates, and private keys managed by surrounding systems.

Inventory item What to record Why it matters
User or service identity Name, purpose, owner, environment, and whether it is interactive or non-interactive Separates an individual login from an application dependency and identifies who can validate the change
Direct role assignments Roles assigned directly to the user Shows the starting point, but not the complete authority
Inherited roles Roles received through role-to-role inheritance Can grant authority that is invisible in a direct-membership-only review
Effective privileges and permissions Privileges and permissions after inheritance is resolved Determines what the identity can actually do
MarkLogic secure credentials Credential name, protected resource, permitted users, and whether it contains a password or certificate/private key A MarkLogic login rotation does not automatically change a secret used to access another system
Dependencies Applications, scheduled jobs, connection pools, deployment pipelines, and monitoring that use the identity Prevents an emergency change from silently breaking production or masking continued compromise

MarkLogic authorization is role based. A user’s effective access is the combination of privileges and permissions inherited through assigned roles, not merely the roles shown in a simple user record. Treat the effective result as the security boundary you are reviewing.

Resolve effective authority, not just direct membership

Flatten role inheritance

For each in-scope identity, collect direct role assignments and then resolve role inheritance. MarkLogic documents an API that returns a user’s privileges with role inheritance flattened. Use that documented mechanism for the deployment version you operate, and retain the result with the incident record. A direct role list that omits inherited roles can understate authority and lead to an incomplete rotation or access-removal decision.

  1. Export or record the user’s direct roles from the approved MarkLogic administration method.
  2. Use the version-appropriate documented privilege API to obtain the effective privilege set with inherited roles flattened.
  3. Map each effective privilege to the security object or operation it enables, such as changing users, roles, privileges, or permissions.
  4. Compare the resulting authority with the identity’s current job or application requirement.
  5. Flag any path that reaches admin, security, or a custom role capable of modifying security objects.

Prioritize the highest-impact identities

Review identities that can alter security objects first. The admin role can perform any activity in MarkLogic, while the security role and custom security-administration roles may control users, roles, privileges, or permissions. Do not assume a custom role is low risk because its name sounds narrow; inspect its effective privileges.

Review priority Examples Decision to make
Critical admin, security, or a custom role that changes security objects Confirm the owner and business need immediately; rotate credentials and remove unnecessary paths first
High Accounts with broad data, configuration, or deployment authority Determine whether the authority was required and whether the account was exposed during the suspected window
Context-dependent Service identities with access to external resources through secure credentials Trace the external secret and rotate it at its destination as well as in MarkLogic
Standard Interactive users with limited application or data permissions Check exposure, effective privileges, and signs of misuse before choosing the change scope

Rotate a MarkLogic user password

Prerequisites and documented behavior

The documented security function is sec:user-set-password(user-name, password). It must execute against the Security database, the new password must be non-empty, and a caller changing another user’s password must have the documented user-set-password privilege. Confirm that the operator has that privilege before beginning; do not grant admin merely to avoid an authorization error.

The documentation set identified for this procedure includes MarkLogic 9 security and administration guides and MarkLogic 12 API references. Verify the target cluster’s exact version and use the corresponding function reference, security model, and administrative interface. Labels and execution details can differ between releases.

Controlled rotation sequence

  1. Confirm the target. Verify the cluster, database, user name, and incident-approved scope. Check whether the identity is interactive, used by an application, or both.
  2. Prepare the replacement secret. Supply a non-empty value through your approved secret-handling process. Do not place it in tickets, shell history, source control, or chat. The supplied documentation does not establish a universal password length or complexity number, so follow your organization’s approved policy and the target version’s controls.
  3. Execute against the Security database. Run the documented sec:user-set-password operation in a session whose content database is the Security database and whose caller has the required privilege.
  4. Record the result. Capture the operator, time, target identity, execution result, and change reference without recording the new password itself.
  5. Update approved consumers. Change the secret in the organization’s secret store and in every authorized application or connection configuration that uses the MarkLogic login.
  6. Test the intended path. Have the application owner verify a new connection and the minimum required operations. Test a human login separately when the identity is interactive.

A successful password change changes that MarkLogic account’s password. It does not prove that an attacker’s active session, connection-pool credential, API token, certificate, private key, or external system password has been invalidated. Handle those items as separate credentials and validate them independently.

Rotate service credentials and MarkLogic secure credentials separately

MarkLogic secure credentials can contain usernames and passwords or certificates and private keys. They are stored in the Security database; secrets are encrypted, and access is controlled through permissions for the protected resource and user. Identify every secure credential that an affected account could read or use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use a two-sided rotation for external secrets

If a secure credential authenticates to another database, API, file service, certificate endpoint, or similar resource, rotate the credential at that destination first or according to the destination owner’s documented order. Then update the MarkLogic secure credential or the application reference that consumes it. Changing a MarkLogic login password does not rotate the external password or replace a certificate/private key.

Secret type Required action Validation
MarkLogic user password Run the authorized password-change function against the Security database Authenticate with the new value and confirm the old value no longer works where policy permits testing
Username/password stored as a secure credential Rotate the password at the external resource, then update the stored credential and its permitted users Exercise the MarkLogic operation that retrieves or uses the credential
Certificate and private key Revoke or replace the affected certificate according to the issuing system, then update the protected credential and dependent configuration Complete a certificate-based connection and verify trust and permissions
Application connection secret Change it in the application’s secret manager, deployment configuration, or connection pool as applicable Restart or refresh the consumer using its documented method and inspect authentication errors

Review the secure credential’s resource scope and user permissions as part of the same change. A credential that remains readable by an unnecessary privileged identity can recreate the exposure even after the original login is rotated.

Reduce privileged access after the immediate rotation

Credential rotation removes one authentication path; least-privilege review reduces the number of paths an attacker or future mistake can use. MarkLogic recommends limiting assignments of the admin and security roles and limiting the number of users or roles able to alter security objects.

Review each security-capable path

  1. List every identity with direct or inherited access to admin, security, or equivalent custom privileges.
  2. For each identity, document the business owner, required tasks, frequency of use, and approved emergency process.
  3. Remove roles or privileges that are not required. Use a planned change and obtain application-owner approval before affecting a service account.
  4. Separate routine application access from security administration. A service identity should not retain security-object authority merely because it once supported a deployment.
  5. Review role-to-role inheritance itself. Removing a direct assignment will not remove access that arrives through another inherited path.
  6. Recalculate effective privileges after the change and retain the before-and-after results.

Do not disable accounts blindly. First determine whether a scheduled job, connection pool, deployment pipeline, or operational procedure depends on them. If an identity is suspected of active misuse, follow the incident lead’s containment decision and document the operational trade-off.

Do not change the realm as a shortcut

Changing the Security database realm is not a substitute for rotating credentials. MarkLogic documents that changing the realm invalidates digest passwords and can lock administrators out of the Admin Interface until credentials are addressed. Treat a realm change as a separate, deliberately planned security operation, not as an emergency password-reset technique.

Use auditing to investigate suspicious activity

MarkLogic auditing can capture selected successful or failed events and can support investigation of suspicious activity. Documented examples include adding or removing roles from users. Audit evidence is useful only if auditing was enabled and configured to record the relevant event types during the period under review.

Questions to answer from the audit configuration

  • Was auditing enabled on the affected cluster and at the relevant time?
  • Which successful and failed event categories were selected?
  • Were user, role, privilege, permission, password, or administrative changes among the captured events?
  • What time zone, retention period, and export controls apply to the records?
  • Can the records be preserved without altering the source evidence?

Search for role additions and removals, changes to security objects, unexpected administrative activity, failed authentication patterns, and actions by identities whose effective privileges exceeded their normal duties. Correlate audit timestamps with application logs, deployment records, network telemetry, and identity-provider records where available. The MarkLogic materials cited here do not define a complete forensic procedure, so preserve and analyze evidence under your organization’s incident-response process.

Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Support on Ko-Fi

Validate the change and account for transaction timing

MarkLogic states that user configuration changes take effect for transactions beginning after commit. A transaction that began before the security change may not reflect the new configuration. Plan validation accordingly rather than treating an immediately open connection as proof that the old authorization remains valid indefinitely.

  1. Confirm that the password or role change committed successfully in the intended Security database.
  2. Start a new authentication or application transaction and verify the expected result.
  3. Test the minimum required operation for the service and a denied operation that should remain outside its authority.
  4. Check connection pools, long-running workers, scheduled jobs, and deployment agents for stale credentials or cached sessions.
  5. Monitor authentication failures and application errors after the change, distinguishing expected stale-client failures from continuing suspicious activity.
  6. Recalculate effective privileges and verify that removed roles or permissions no longer provide the old authority to newly started transactions.

Do not claim that this validation proves every active session or token was terminated. The documented password function changes the account password; separate controls and incident procedures are needed for session invalidation, token revocation, certificate revocation, endpoint cleanup, and external identity systems.

Common failure modes and their remedies

Running the function against the wrong database

Symptom: the operation fails, or an operator cannot explain why the expected security object did not change. Remedy: confirm that execution is against the Security database and repeat the approved procedure only after verifying the target cluster and user.

Using an empty or mishandled replacement password

Symptom: the documented function rejects the value, or the new secret is exposed in a ticket or command history. Remedy: provide a non-empty value through the approved secret-handling method and record only the change metadata.

The caller lacks the required privilege

Symptom: changing another user fails authorization. Remedy: use an already authorized security administrator or follow the approved escalation path; do not casually assign admin.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Reviewing only direct roles

Symptom: an account appears ordinary, but it can still perform a sensitive operation. Remedy: resolve inherited roles and use the documented API that returns flattened effective privileges.

Rotating only the MarkLogic login

Symptom: an application continues to reach an external system with a potentially exposed credential. Remedy: rotate the external secret at its destination and update the MarkLogic secure credential or consuming application separately.

Disabling a service identity without dependency review

Symptom: production jobs fail or operators create an emergency account with broader access. Remedy: identify dependencies, obtain owner approval, and choose a containment action that preserves least privilege.

Assuming auditing will answer questions it was not configured to capture

Symptom: investigators expect an event that is absent from the audit records. Remedy: verify the historical audit configuration and treat an absent record as unavailable evidence, not proof that the action did not occur.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Changing the realm during a password incident

Symptom: digest passwords stop working or administrators lose Admin Interface access. Remedy: avoid realm changes for routine rotation and use the documented password operation instead.

Version, evidence, and response boundaries

Before applying any command, API call, or interface instruction, verify whether the deployment is MarkLogic 9, MarkLogic 12, or another supported release and consult that release’s documentation. The security model concepts in this guide—roles, inherited authority, Security-database operations, secure credentials, and auditing—must still be checked against the target version’s exact behavior and labels.

The documented controls establish how to change a named MarkLogic password, inspect effective authority, review audit events, and protect stored credentials. They do not by themselves establish that the compromise has been contained, that an attacker’s persistence is removed, that forensic evidence is complete, or that notification obligations are satisfied. Use the organization’s incident-response plan for those decisions, and involve the MarkLogic support or security team when the deployment’s version-specific behavior or evidence requirements exceed the documented procedure.
