Use OBS Studio’s built-in Image Source in slideshow mode to rotate devotional images while your mantra audio plays. Add the slideshow to the scene you stream, arrange and preview the frame, then connect OBS to YouTube with the stream URL and key from YouTube Studio.
Before you set up the stream
- Check YouTube eligibility. YouTube requires a verified channel with no live-stream restrictions in the previous 90 days. First-time live-stream activation can take up to 24 hours, so enable it ahead of the planned stream. See YouTube’s encoder setup guidance and live-streaming eligibility and format guidance.
- Gather image files and confirm rights. Having an image or recording available does not automatically give you permission to broadcast it. Check the terms or obtain permission for the specific devotional artwork and mantra recording you plan to use.
- Choose the viewing format before going live. YouTube documents horizontal (16:9) and vertical (9:16) live formats. If you plan to use its dual-format route, decide and configure it before starting: vertical format cannot be added after the stream has begun. For third-party encoders, YouTube documents a dual-stream path using RTMP(S) and a second stream key. Review YouTube’s format guidance and test how the images and any text look in the intended frame.
How to make an image slideshow in OBS
- Create or select the scene. In OBS, choose the scene that will carry the mantra stream, or create one for it. Scenes contain the sources that make up the picture and sound sent to viewers.
- Add the slideshow source. In the Sources panel, use the add control, choose Image Source, and select the slideshow option. Add the image files you want to rotate. OBS’s Sources Guide describes the Image Source as supporting a single image or a slideshow in a scene. Controls and labels can vary slightly by OBS version.
- Frame the devotional images. Select the source and use the canvas preview to position and size it. Fit the image if you want the whole picture visible; crop it if filling the frame matters more than showing every edge. Check each image rather than assuming one crop will suit the entire set. OBS documents source sizing and cropping in its Sources Guide.
- Add text separately, if needed. Create a separate text source for a mantra, title, or other overlay. Place it above the image source in the Sources list so it appears in front. Keep important text inside the visible area in the format you chose.
- Check source visibility and order. Confirm the slideshow source is visible and not hidden behind another full-frame source. Source order determines which elements appear in front. Preview the composition in OBS before sending it to YouTube.
Automatic rotation or manual image changes?
| Approach | Use it when | What to set up |
|---|---|---|
| Image Source slideshow | You want images to rotate within one scene without selecting a new scene each time. | Add the image set as a slideshow in the scene and check its framing and visibility. |
| Separate scenes | You want to choose deliberately which image viewers see and when it changes. | Make a scene for each composition, then use OBS scene transitions. Studio Mode lets you prepare a scene in preview and transition it live. |
| Single Image Source | You want one devotional image to remain on screen. | Add a still image source instead of a slideshow. |
OBS documents both source and scene workflows in its Sources Guide and Studio Overview Guide. A slideshow is the simpler fit for hands-off rotation; separate scenes give the operator explicit control over each change.

Connect OBS to YouTube Live
- Create or select the stream in YouTube Studio. Open the Live Control Room and choose the stream you will use.
- Copy the stream URL and stream key. YouTube supplies these in the encoder setup. Treat the key like a password: do not show it in a screen share or publish it.
- Enter the connection details in OBS. Open OBS stream settings. Choose YouTube as the service if it is available, or enter YouTube’s stream URL and key manually.
- Start the encoder feed. Start streaming in OBS, then follow the Live Control Room’s on-screen go-live flow. Confirm the YouTube preview appears before you make the stream public or begin the planned broadcast. The exact controls may vary with YouTube Studio’s current layout; see YouTube’s encoder instructions.
Preflight and troubleshooting
OBS recommends testing the setup before a first live stream. Its Studio Overview Guide covers stream configuration, scenes, transitions, and Studio Mode.
- The devotional image is missing: Check that the source is visible, belongs to the active scene, and is not covered by another source. Reopen the source settings to confirm the intended files are selected.
- The image is cut off or has unwanted empty space: Adjust its size and position in the canvas preview; choose fit or crop according to whether the full image or a filled frame matters more. Recheck the composition in the intended horizontal or vertical format.
- Text is hidden behind the image: Move the text source above the image source in the Sources list and confirm it is visible.
- Images do not change as expected: Confirm that you added an Image Source slideshow rather than a still image source, and that the slideshow contains the intended files. If you want to control changes yourself, use separate scenes and transitions instead.
- YouTube does not show an encoder preview: Confirm OBS is using the stream URL and current key shown for the selected YouTube stream, and that the OBS encoder feed has started. Check the Live Control Room for its connection status and follow its prompts.
- You cannot start the live stream: Check channel verification and whether the channel has had a live-stream restriction in the past 90 days. If this is the first activation, allow up to 24 hours for YouTube to enable live streaming.
- Vertical viewing looks wrong: Rework the composition for the selected format, paying particular attention to text and imagery near the edges. YouTube says vertical cannot be added after the stream starts, so settle the format before going live.
Or let it run in the cloud
If your goal is a 24/7 YouTube mantra stream and you have a pre-recorded video or playlist, StreamNeo can keep it looping from the cloud: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key once, and go live. It plays uploaded videos, not a live camera feed. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams your uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatically recovers if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card. The monthly option is $9.99 per month.
