You can either deploy an older Edge MSI with ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1, or use Edge Update policy on a domain-managed Windows device. Before either method, enable Sync, verify that the exact target build exists, and plan to return to a current supported release because an older build may lack security fixes.
What an Edge rollback does
A rollback replaces the installed Microsoft Edge browser with an earlier build. It is not a normal consumer “restore previous version” button. Microsoft documents rollback for enterprise troubleshooting, where an administrator needs to test whether a recent Edge change caused a compatibility or deployment problem.

There are two supported approaches:
- MSI deployment: install a specific older package on one device or a controlled group of devices. This is generally the faster option when you already have the correct package.
- Edge Update policy: configure a target version and update behavior through Local Group Policy or domain policy. This is repeatable for Windows devices joined to a Microsoft Active Directory domain.
Both approaches depend on having a real, correctly formatted Edge build that Microsoft still makes available through its enterprise download channel. A version number typed from memory, a nonexistent build, or a target that is not supported will not produce a successful rollback.

Use rollback to isolate a specific regression, application conflict, or managed-browser deployment problem. Treat it as temporary. Microsoft recommends keeping Edge on its latest version so the browser receives current security updates; an older build can contain known vulnerabilities that have already been fixed in newer releases.

Before changing the installation, write down the current version and the target version you intend to test. Keeping both values makes it easier to document the incident and restore the supported build later.
Pre-rollback checklist
- Confirm that the issue is connected to the Edge version rather than a profile, extension, operating-system, or site configuration problem.
- Enable Edge Sync and allow it to finish before removing or replacing the browser. Microsoft warns that unsynchronized browsing data could be permanently lost during a version change.
- Record the currently installed build from Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
- Obtain the exact target MSI from Microsoft’s enterprise download source and check that the build number is supported and correctly formatted.
- Decide how you will monitor the test and how you will return users to a current Edge release.
- For a managed fleet, identify which devices and users should receive the temporary setting so the rollback does not spread beyond the incident scope.
Method 1: roll back with an Edge MSI
An MSI is practical for a controlled one-off deployment or for administrators who need the package installed without waiting for the normal Edge Update polling cycle. The package must be the earlier Edge build you want to test.
1. Obtain and stage the exact package
Download the required enterprise MSI from Microsoft’s official enterprise Edge download source. Confirm the complete version string before deployment. Keep the file in a controlled location and record its checksum or internal deployment identifier if your organization uses one; the Microsoft procedure itself does not specify a checksum value.

2. Run the downgrade-enabled installation
Open an administrator command prompt in the folder containing the MSI, or provide the full path to the file, and run:
msiexec /I FileName.msi /qn ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1Replace FileName.msi with the actual package name. The /qn switch runs the Windows Installer package without a normal user-interface sequence. The ALLOWDOWNGRADE=1 property is the part that permits installation of an earlier Edge version over a newer one.
3. Close and reopen Edge
After installation completes, close every Edge window and start the browser again. A running process can leave the previous session open, so checking the version before a full restart can give a misleading result.
4. Verify the installed build
In Edge, open Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge. Compare the displayed version with the target build you recorded. If the browser still reports the newer version, do not assume that the MSI succeeded: review the installer result, confirm that the package was the intended build, and check for an update policy that immediately moved the device forward.

- You need a specific package on one device or a tightly controlled test ring.
- You need the change to occur without waiting for the next Edge Update check.
- You have an established software-distribution system that can run the command with administrator rights and report installation status.
MSI deployment is less convenient when many domain-managed devices must receive the same temporary setting, because each device or distribution job must be targeted and tracked separately.
Method 2: roll back with Edge Update policy
The policy method is designed for managed Windows devices. Microsoft’s policy reference says it applies to Edge version 86 or later on devices joined to a Microsoft Active Directory domain. It uses two settings together: a target version and an update policy that still permits updates.

Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Microsoft Edge Update > Applications > Microsoft Edge
In a domain environment, the equivalent settings can be delivered through the organization’s central Group Policy management process.
2. Enable “Rollback to target version”
Open Rollback to target version, select Enabled, and apply the setting. Enabling this switch alone is not sufficient; the policy requires a target version override.
3. Enter the exact target version
Set Target version override to the complete Edge build you want installed. A value such as 83.0.499.12 illustrates the required format. Use an existing, supported build rather than a shortened value, a channel name, or a version copied with extra characters.
The rollback policy does nothing if the target override is empty. It also cannot downgrade an installation that is already at or below the target: rollback occurs only when the current Edge version is higher than the configured target.

4. Enable an update policy that permits updates
Open Update policy override and choose one of the update-permitting states:
- Always allow updates
- Automatic silent updates only
- Manual updates only
Do not choose Updates disabled for this procedure. Microsoft’s policy reference states that rollback requires the update policy override to be in an ON state. Disabling updates prevents the rollback action from working.
5. Refresh policy
On the affected Windows device, run:
gpupdate /forceThis requests an immediate Group Policy refresh. It does not necessarily install the older Edge build at that moment. The Edge Update service performs the rollback during its next update check.
6. Wait for the Edge Update check
Microsoft reports that Edge Update checks for updates every 10 hours by default. A policy change can therefore appear correct while the installed version remains unchanged for a period of time. Administrators can adjust the polling interval when their management design allows it, or use MSI deployment when an immediate package installation is required.
7. Restart and verify Edge
When the update check has had time to run, close and reopen Edge. Then open Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge and confirm that the displayed build matches the target override.

How the two rollback methods differ

Neither method eliminates the need to validate the result on the device. A successful command or policy refresh is not proof that the browser is running the intended build; the About page is the authoritative check described in Microsoft’s procedure.
Why an Edge rollback policy may not work
The target version is missing
Symptom: The rollback setting is enabled, but no downgrade occurs.
Cause: Target version override is blank. Microsoft states that RollbackToTargetVersion does nothing unless a target is set.
Fix: Enter the full target build, refresh policy with gpupdate /force, and wait for the next Edge Update check.
The version is malformed or does not exist
Symptom: Policy appears configured, but Edge remains on the current version.
Cause: The target contains a typo, an incomplete version, or a build Microsoft does not support or make available.
Fix: Copy the exact version from the enterprise package or Microsoft’s documented list of available builds. A correctly formatted value such as 83.0.499.12 is the model; do not substitute a major-version number alone.
The device is not actually newer than the target
Symptom: Policy is present, but nothing changes.
Cause: The installed Edge version is equal to or lower than the target. Rollback only acts when the current version is higher.
Fix: Check the installed build in Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge and compare all version components with the target.
Updates are disabled
Symptom: Rollback remains inactive even though the target is valid.

Cause: Update policy override is set to Updates disabled, or it is otherwise not in an ON state.
Fix: Select Always allow updates, Automatic silent updates only, or Manual updates only, then refresh policy.
Policy has not reached every device
Symptom: Some users receive the older build while others remain on the newer one.
Cause: Group Policy synchronization and Edge Update checks do not happen at the same moment on every device.
Fix: Confirm that the affected computers are in the intended policy scope, run gpupdate /force where appropriate, allow synchronization to complete, and account for the Edge Update polling interval. If an immediate result is essential, use a controlled MSI deployment for the remaining devices.

The browser changed back after the downgrade
Symptom: The target build appears briefly, then a newer build returns.
Cause: The device is still receiving an update-permitting policy or another deployment job is installing the current package.
Fix: Review the effective update policy and deployment assignments. Keep the rollback target and update behavior consistent for the duration of the test, and remove the temporary controls as soon as the incident is resolved.

Turn on Edge Sync before rollback. Microsoft specifically recommends Sync because unsynchronized browsing data may be permanently lost when versions are replaced. Allow synchronization to finish rather than enabling it at the last moment and immediately launching the installer.

Return to a supported current Edge build
Rollback should end when the compatibility test or incident investigation ends. Leaving a device on an old build increases exposure to security problems and can create a second support issue.
Remove temporary policy controls
In the same policy location, turn off the temporary Rollback to target version setting and remove or restore the temporary Target version override. Set the update policy to the organization’s normal update behavior rather than leaving a test-specific value in place. Refresh Group Policy, allow Edge Update to check again, restart Edge, and verify the resulting build from the About page.
Replace the test MSI installation
If the rollback was performed with MSI, deploy the current supported Edge package through the organization’s normal software-distribution process. Close and reopen Edge after installation and verify the current version in Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.

Keep an incident record showing the old build, the target build, the reason for rollback, the affected devices, the test result, and the date the current build was restored. This prevents a temporary exception from becoming an undocumented permanent configuration.
Repair Edge when the installation or updater is damaged
A failed rollback is not always a version-policy problem. If Edge cannot install, update, or start normally, Microsoft Support’s recovery guidance points to the official Edge download and reinstall process.
Use the official current package
Download the current Edge installer from Microsoft’s official Edge download page and use it to repair or reinstall the browser. This is the appropriate recovery path when the installation files or update components are damaged, rather than repeatedly attempting a downgrade with an uncertain package.
Clear stale installation material
Microsoft’s guidance includes deleting previous installation files or the Edge update cache when those files are interfering with installation. Apply this only as part of a controlled repair procedure, because removing cached material can cause the next installation to download packages again.
Uninstall and reinstall if necessary
If repairing the existing installation does not resolve the problem, uninstall Edge and reinstall it with the current official package. Recheck Sync and profile availability before taking this step, since removing an installation is more disruptive than changing a managed version target.
A practical rollback runbook
- Identify the incident and define the smallest test scope.
- Enable Sync and wait for it to complete.
- Record the current Edge build and the exact target build.
- Confirm that the target package exists and is supported.
- Choose MSI for a controlled immediate deployment, or policy for a repeatable domain-managed rollout.
- For policy, enable Rollback to target version, set Target version override, and choose an update-permitting Update policy override.
- Refresh policy with
gpupdate /forceand allow the Edge Update check to occur. - Restart Edge and verify the version from Settings and more > Settings > About Microsoft Edge.
- Test the application or site that motivated the rollback.
- Remove the temporary rollback controls and restore a current supported Edge build.
This sequence separates data protection, version selection, deployment, verification, and cleanup. If the result is not the expected build, stop and correct the target or policy instead of assuming that the browser is safely rolled back.
