You generally can’t roll back a Motorola phone to an older Android version through Motorola’s supported update tools. Motorola says, “You can’t downgrade to a previous software version after installing an update.” Its Software Fix/Rescue process reinstalls the current software available for your specific model and carrier; it is not an older-version installer, and it erases personal data.
What “rollback” means—and what Motorola supports
A rollback means replacing the installed Android version with an earlier one. Motorola’s consumer support guidance says that a phone cannot be downgraded after an update is installed. A factory reset does not reverse an Android update either: it resets the device, but it does not restore an earlier OS version.

Motorola’s official Rescue process is a different kind of repair. It installs the current software available for the phone’s model and carrier, and can help with software-related problems. What to try if the update caused a problem
Record your phone and software details
Before troubleshooting, note the exact model number, Android version, update date, and what is going wrong. Motorola’s support page says to find the Android version under Settings > About phone > Device details > Android version; labels can vary by phone and software version. Include the model and software build if you contact Motorola or your carrier.

Check for another official update
Open your phone’s System updates settings and check whether an update is available. This is a check, not a guarantee of a fix: update availability and timing vary by model, region, carrier, certification, and partner distribution processes. Consider Motorola Software Fix/Rescue only as a current-software repair
If software problems persist, Motorola’s Rescue process may be an option for reinstalling the current software for your phone. The process matches firmware using the phone’s IMEI, so check that Software Fix identifies the correct device model. Motorola’s Rescue instructions specify a Windows PC, internet access, and a USB cable.

Rescue resets the phone and removes personal data, including downloaded apps, photos, and text messages. Back up anything you need first. If a Google account was on the phone before Rescue, you must use that same account during setup afterward. Motorola’s Software Fix feature summary and Rescue instructions describe the process and its effects.
Prepare before using Rescue or resetting the phone
- Back up your data. Rescue erases personal data, so save photos, messages, and other files you want to keep before starting.
- Confirm account and lock credentials. Make sure you know the Google account previously used on the phone, along with any screen-lock details needed during setup. Motorola’s reset guidance advises backing up and having relevant account and security information available.
- Check the computer and connection. Have a Windows PC, internet access, and a USB cable ready, as specified in Motorola’s Rescue instructions.
- Verify the detected model. Software Fix uses the phone’s IMEI to match firmware. Confirm the model shown is the phone you intend to repair before proceeding.
- Allow for a substantial download. Motorola says Rescue firmware files may be 2 GB to 4 GB. Its example estimate for downloading 2 GB over a stated 200 MB/s connection is about 5–7 minutes, followed by a few minutes to unzip; actual time depends on the connection and file.
Why your Motorola phone may receive updates at a different time
There is no single schedule that applies to every Motorola phone. Availability and timing depend on the model, region, carrier, certification, and partner processes. A security update and a major Android OS upgrade are also different update types, so another phone’s timing is not a reliable guide to yours. Check the update status for your exact device and distribution channel rather than assuming an update is available.

What about unofficial firmware flashing?
Motorola’s reviewed consumer-support guidance does not establish a universally safe or supported manual-flashing procedure, or universal exceptions for different bootloader states and manually flashed builds. Avoid treating an unofficial firmware package or procedure as a general-purpose rollback method. For model-specific options, ask Motorola or your carrier and provide the exact model number and software build.
