If a game broke immediately after Windows 11 updated, first identify whether Windows installed a regular quality update or upgraded to a new feature version. Uninstall a recent quality update from Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates. For a feature upgrade, use Settings > System > Recovery > Go back while that option is available, normally for 10 days. If Windows will not boot, use Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). These actions remove or reverse different things, so choose the least disruptive option that matches when the failure began.
Identify what changed before removing anything
A rollback is most useful when the game failure started directly after a Windows change. Check the timing, then determine which type of change occurred.

Regular quality or cumulative update
Quality updates are the recurring Windows updates that add security and reliability fixes. They appear individually in Settings > Windows Update > Update history, usually with a KB number and an installation date. If the game worked before one of these entries and failed afterward, uninstall that specific update first.
Feature-version upgrade
A feature upgrade moves the computer to a new Windows 11 release rather than adding a single patch. If the problem began after that larger version change, the correct recovery control is Go back, not the individual-update uninstall list. Press Win, type winver, and note the Windows version and build so you can compare the timing with the game failure.

Driver, anti-cheat, or game update
Windows may not be the cause. A graphics-driver update, a launcher change, an anti-cheat component, or a patch from the game’s publisher can produce the same symptoms. If no Windows entry matches the start of the problem, troubleshoot those components before rolling back the operating system.
Choose the recovery option that fits
| What happened | Where to start | What changes | Availability and risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Recent quality or cumulative update | Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates | Removes the selected update; personal files and installed apps are normally left in place. | Some updates cannot be uninstalled. |
| Recent feature-version upgrade | Settings > System > Recovery > Go back | Keeps personal files, but removes apps and drivers installed after the upgrade and reverses settings changes made afterward. | Usually offered for 10 days; requires the rollback files to remain. |
| Windows components appear damaged, but the current version should remain | Settings > System > Recovery > Fix problems using Windows Update > Reinstall now | Reinstalls the same Windows version, repairs system files and components, and preserves apps, files, and settings. | May be missing on managed devices or unsupported Windows versions. |
| Windows will not start | WinRE > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates | Removes a recent quality or feature update from outside the normal desktop. | BitLocker may require the recovery key. |
| Need to return to an earlier saved system state | WinRE point-in-time restore or System Restore | Returns system files, settings, programs and, for point-in-time restore, the broader system state to an earlier point. Later changes can be lost. | Only useful when a suitable restore point or recovery image exists. |
| Other recovery methods have failed | Reset this PC or installation media | Reinstalls Windows and can remove apps, settings, and potentially personal data depending on the choice. | Most disruptive; back up first. |
Back up saves and documents first
Copy important game saves, screenshots, documents and configuration files to another drive or a trusted cloud location before using System Restore, reset, or installation media. Many games synchronize saves, but that behavior varies by title and launcher; do not assume an unsynchronized local save will return after recovery.
An uninstall of a single update is less destructive than a reset, but a backup is still sensible when the computer is unstable. Point-in-time restore discards changes made after the selected point, and reset or a clean installation can remove applications and settings.

Use this procedure while Windows is running and you have identified a specific update whose installation coincides with the game problem.
- Open Settings.
- Select Windows Update, then Update history.
- Scroll to Related settings and select Uninstall updates.
- Review the list by installation date and KB number. Select the update installed immediately before the game stopped working.
- Choose Uninstall and confirm. Restart when Windows requests it.
- Launch the affected game and reproduce the original failure before changing several other variables. Record whether the game now starts, whether online services connect, and whether the same crash or error remains.
Microsoft notes that some updates cannot be removed. A missing uninstall control does not mean the update was harmless; it means Windows does not support removing that package through this path. Do not delete update files manually.
Use “Go back” after a feature upgrade
Choose this route when the computer moved to a new Windows 11 version and the game broke after that upgrade. Microsoft generally makes Go back available for 10 days after the upgrade, although the control can disappear sooner if the required files were removed or the device state changed.

- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Under Recovery options, select Go back if it is present.
- When Windows asks why you are going back, choose a reason that describes the game failure. This feedback does not replace troubleshooting, but it helps Windows record the outcome.
- Check for prompts to install updates instead, then continue if returning to the previous version is still the correct choice.
- Read the warnings: personal files remain, while apps and drivers installed after the upgrade are removed and settings changed after the upgrade are reversed.
- Keep the computer connected to power and allow the restart sequence to finish. Sign in to the previous Windows version and test the game.
The rollback depends on the windows.old and $windows.~bt folders remaining. If the upgrade came from a USB drive, Windows may also require that original USB drive. Disk cleanup or storage management can remove these files, making Go back unavailable. The 10-day period is a usual product rule, not a promise that every device will show the option for the full period.

If uninstalling the update is impossible, the feature rollback window has closed, or Windows itself appears damaged, try the supported repair that keeps the current version.
- Open Settings > System > Recovery.
- Find Fix problems using Windows Update and select Reinstall now.
- Review the confirmation. Windows will reinstall the same version already on the PC, repair system files and components, and preserve apps, files and settings.
- Keep the computer connected to power and the internet while the process downloads and installs the repair.
- Restart, install any pending updates that Windows offers, and test the game.
This option can be absent on a device managed by an organization or on a Windows version that does not support it. Its absence is not an indication that a reset is immediately necessary; use WinRE, System Restore, or installation media according to the failure state.
Roll back when Windows will not boot
When Windows cannot reach the sign-in screen, enter Windows Recovery Environment (WinRE). After several failed starts, Windows may open it automatically. You can also interrupt startup two times by holding the power button during the early boot phase; on the next start, Windows commonly displays Automatic Repair and an Advanced options button. If that does not work, use a Windows recovery drive or installation USB.
- In WinRE, select Troubleshoot.
- Choose Advanced options.
- Select Uninstall Updates.
- Try Uninstall latest quality update for a recent cumulative patch. If the problem followed a feature upgrade and the option is offered, use the feature-update choice instead.
- Follow the prompts and restart.
BitLocker encryption can require the recovery key before WinRE exposes recovery actions. Retrieve the key from the Microsoft account or organization account associated with the PC, or from the location where it was saved when encryption was enabled. Do not guess keys or repeatedly force shutdowns once recovery is running.

- Point-in-time restore: On supported Windows 11 systems, Microsoft lists this for version 24H2 or later. It returns the PC to the exact earlier state represented by a restore point, including apps, settings and files captured there. Changes made after that point are lost.
- System Restore: Reverts system files, registry settings and installed programs to a restore point without affecting personal files. Recently installed apps, drivers, updates or settings can be undone.
- Reset this PC: Reinstalls Windows and is more disruptive. Read whether the selected mode keeps or removes personal files, and expect to reinstall applications.
- Installation media: Use a recovery drive or Windows installation media when local recovery is damaged. Protect data first and follow Microsoft’s current media-creation guidance; requirements can change.
Test the game after Windows recovery
Getting the game to launch after a rollback shows that the timing was related, but it does not prove that the removed Windows package was the root cause. Test in a controlled order so you can identify what actually fixed the problem.
Install a compatible graphics driver
Check the GPU manufacturer’s current driver for your exact graphics hardware and Windows 11 version. A rollback can leave an old driver in place, while a newer Windows build may require a newer driver. If the failure began immediately after a driver update rather than Windows Update, use the driver’s own rollback or clean-reinstall procedure instead of removing an unrelated Windows package.
Repair the launcher and anti-cheat component
Use the launcher’s repair or reinstall function for the game and its anti-cheat service. Anti-cheat components operate at a privileged level and can fail after a Windows security or driver change even when the game files themselves are intact. Reboot after reinstalling the component and test one title before changing another.

Run the launcher’s verify, repair, or equivalent file-integrity action. This replaces missing or altered files without requiring a full game download in many launchers. If verification repeatedly reports corruption, check the drive and launcher cache rather than rolling Windows back again.
Check the publisher’s compatibility information
Look for a compatibility notice or patch from the game’s publisher. Microsoft notes that older apps and games can fail after a newer Windows version because of architecture changes, security features, or changed system requirements. A publisher patch may be the durable fix, whereas staying on an older Windows build only postpones the incompatibility.
Retest online and offline modes separately
First launch a local or training mode, then connect to online services. If offline play works but multiplayer fails, investigate anti-cheat, account, firewall, or service compatibility rather than repeating the Windows rollback. Record the exact error code and event time before contacting the publisher.

Common failure branches
The update is not listed
Confirm the installation date in Update history and remember that some servicing packages cannot be uninstalled. If the issue began after a feature upgrade, use Go back instead. If neither control exists, try Reinstall now or WinRE recovery, then investigate drivers and game components.
“Go back” is missing
The usual 10-day window may have expired, or windows.old and $windows.~bt may have been removed. A USB-based upgrade can also require the original USB drive. Do not remove more files in an attempt to make the option appear; use repair, restore, or installation media instead.
The game still fails after rollback
Undoing Windows changes does not reverse a game patch or a graphics-driver installation. Check the driver, launcher, anti-cheat service, game files, publisher notices, and Windows Event Viewer for the failure time. If several games fail, prioritize the driver and Windows components; if only one fails, prioritize that game’s files and publisher support.
Windows updates itself again
After confirming that the removed update was involved, pause updates temporarily through Settings > Windows Update while you install a compatible driver or wait for a documented game fix. Do not leave security updates paused indefinitely; resume updating after the compatibility issue is resolved.
When a reset or clean installation is justified
Use reset or installation media only when update removal, feature rollback, repair reinstall, restore points, and driver or game repairs cannot produce a usable system. These choices can remove applications and settings, and a clean installation can remove personal data. Verify backups, locate application installers and license information, and make sure you have network and storage drivers before starting. A recovery drive or installation USB should be prepared on a working computer if the affected PC cannot boot.
After reinstalling, install Windows updates, the correct graphics driver, the game launcher and anti-cheat component, and then the game. Test at each stage rather than restoring every old tweak at once; that makes a recurring compatibility failure easier to isolate.

What a successful rollback tells you
If the game works only on the previous Windows state, keep the exact Windows version, update KB number or feature-build number, driver version, game version and error message in your notes. That record lets you check for a later Windows fix, driver release, or publisher patch without repeatedly changing a stable installation. A rollback is a diagnostic step and a short-term recovery measure, not proof that the older Windows version is a permanent solution.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will uninstalling a Windows 11 update delete my game saves?
Microsoft’s update-uninstall process is designed to remove the selected update without removing personal files or installed apps. Saves can still be lost if they exist only on a damaged drive or if you later use reset or installation media, so copy important saves before broader recovery.
Can I roll back a feature upgrade after 10 days?
Usually not through the built-in Go back control. Microsoft generally limits it to 10 days and requires the rollback files to remain. After that, use repair, restore, or installation media rather than deleting files to force the option.
Why did only one game break after Windows updated?
A single title may depend on a particular anti-cheat version, launcher component, graphics API, or system requirement. Verify that game’s files and reinstall its anti-cheat component before assuming the Windows update is the cause.
Do I need internet access to uninstall an update in WinRE?
No internet connection is normally needed to remove an update already stored on the PC through WinRE. Internet access may be needed later for drivers, Windows repair downloads, launcher files, or publisher patches.
