How to Roll Back a Samsung One UI Update—and What to Know Before You Try

The supported rollback route depends on what you installed. Samsung documents a rollback for an enrolled One UI beta: withdraw from the beta in Samsung Members, connect the Galaxy phone to a computer, and choose Downgrade in Smart Switch. The process resets the phone and removes data created during beta testing. For a normal public stable update, Samsung says an older, less-secure version cannot be installed through downgrade, and Knox rollback prevention may block an older bootloader at the hardware level.

First determine whether the update is a beta or a stable release

Open the phone’s software information and check how you received the build. A build installed through Samsung’s One UI Beta Program is treated differently from a public update delivered through the regular software-update channel. This distinction determines whether Samsung provides a documented rollback path.

Do not rely only on the One UI version number. Check whether Samsung Members shows that the device is enrolled in a beta program, and note the exact model and software information. A phone can look identical to another Galaxy model while following a different firmware track because of its market, carrier or hardware variant. Those details matter if you need Samsung support and help explain why a Downgrade control may appear on one device but not another.

Situation Samsung-documented action What happens to data Purpose
One UI beta is installed and the phone is enrolled in the beta Withdraw in Samsung Members, then use Smart Switch on a computer and select Downgrade when offered The phone is reset and beta-generated data is removed; a computer backup can be restored afterward Return from the beta to the supported non-beta software path
Public stable One UI update is installed Samsung support says an older version with weaker security cannot be installed through downgrade No supported routine downgrade is provided Protect the device from loading software below the permitted security level
An update failed or was interrupted and the phone no longer works normally Use Smart Switch Emergency Software Recovery according to Samsung’s recovery guide Recovery can involve reinstalling the required software; follow the guide’s warnings about data and device state Repair an update failure, not choose an older version

Samsung does not establish that the beta option appears for every model, country, carrier or enrollment. If Smart Switch does not show Downgrade after you leave the beta, contact Samsung support or an authorized service center rather than forcing a firmware installation.

How the documented One UI beta rollback works

Samsung’s One UI Beta Program guidance describes a computer-based Smart Switch process. The sequence matters: leave the beta first, make a backup, then connect the phone and start the downgrade. A beta withdrawal is not the same as deleting the Samsung Members app or turning off update notifications; it changes your participation status so the supported rollback workflow can be offered.

1. Withdraw from the beta in Samsung Members

Open Samsung Members, go to the One UI Beta Program area, and use its beta-program settings to withdraw. Confirm that the app reports the withdrawal rather than assuming the tap succeeded. Leaving the program stops further beta participation; it does not by itself reinstall the previous software or undo the current build.

2. Back up before connecting the phone

Install and open Smart Switch on a computer, connect the Galaxy phone, and create a computer backup. Check that the backup finishes and is visible in Smart Switch before proceeding. Samsung warns that the downgrade resets the device and removes data generated during beta testing, so treat the backup as essential rather than optional. Samsung says that backup can be restored after the rollback.

What’s actually slowing this PC down?

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.

A backup is useful only if it is actually readable. Leave the phone connected until Smart Switch confirms completion, note where the backup is stored, and avoid deleting it until you have finished setup and checked important content. If you have more than one computer available, keep the completed backup on the computer you will use for the restore. Cloud-synchronized contacts, photos or other content may return through their respective accounts, but that does not replace the Smart Switch backup Samsung identifies for this rollback.

  • Confirm the computer has enough free storage for the backup.
  • Use a USB data cable that supports your Galaxy model and the computer’s port; a charge-only cable will not provide the required connection.
  • Keep the phone charged and prevent the computer from sleeping during the process.
  • Do not begin immediately before travel, work or another situation in which you cannot complete setup and account verification.

3. Connect the Galaxy phone by USB

Use the USB cable to connect the phone directly to the computer. Avoid hubs or adapters that can interrupt the connection, and do not disconnect the cable once Smart Switch begins changing the software. If the computer asks the phone to allow access or select a USB mode, approve the connection and follow Smart Switch’s prompt rather than switching cables repeatedly while an operation is underway.

4. Choose Downgrade in Smart Switch

Launch Smart Switch on the computer and look for Downgrade for the connected, beta-enrolled device. Select it only after you have verified the backup and understand that the phone will be reset. If the button is absent, stop: Samsung’s documentation does not promise universal availability, and the absence may reflect the device, market, beta status or timing.

Do not confuse a normal update notification with the Downgrade control. The supported beta route is tied to the enrolled device and the state recognized by Smart Switch. Downloading a package manually, installing an older desktop application or trying a different cable cannot create eligibility that Samsung has not provided.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

5. Follow every on-screen prompt

Smart Switch downloads and installs the software it makes available for that enrollment. Keep the phone connected, do not press buttons unnecessarily, and do not use the phone while the software operation is running. An interruption can leave the device unable to boot normally.

Allow the computer and phone to remain powered for the entire operation. Do not close the laptop lid, force a restart, disconnect the cable to answer a call or let an automatic computer restart interrupt Smart Switch. If an error appears, record its wording and stop rather than repeating the same action without knowing whether the phone is still in the middle of installation.

6. Restore the computer backup

After the phone starts the restored software, complete initial setup and reconnect it to Smart Switch. Use the restore function to bring back the data saved before the downgrade. Some beta-created settings or app states may not return exactly as they were, because Samsung specifically warns that beta-generated data is removed.

Test the basics before you erase the backup: place a call, connect to Wi-Fi and mobile data, sign in to the Samsung and Google accounts requested during setup, unlock with your chosen method and open the apps you need most. Keep the backup until those checks pass and any synchronized content has finished returning.

Why a stable One UI downgrade is normally blocked

For a regular public release, Samsung’s support explanation, Can Galaxy software be downgraded?, says that Galaxy devices cannot be downgraded to an older version with weaker security. This is a policy and security boundary, not merely a missing menu option in Smart Switch.

Security updates can change the minimum software level a device is allowed to run. Allowing a phone to return to an older release could reintroduce vulnerabilities that the newer release corrected. Samsung therefore does not present a general consumer procedure for selecting any previous stable One UI build.

Samsung Knox documents the underlying protection in its Samsung Knox Mobile Security White Paper. Once a bootloader containing approved new software is installed, it records that bootloader version in hardware so an older bootloader cannot load. The minimum acceptable bootloader version therefore moves forward on affected devices.

In Samsung’s words: “Once a bootloader containing approved new software is installed, it fuses the version of that bootloader to hardware, preventing old software from being loaded.” The important point is that this check happens below the ordinary Android interface. A menu, factory reset or copy of an old installation file cannot simply erase the recorded minimum.

That means a firmware file found online, a different Smart Switch release or Odin is not a universal solution. Even when a file appears to match the phone’s model name, compatibility can depend on the exact model variant, region, carrier software and bootloader revision. A package that is older than the hardware-enforced minimum may be rejected; an incompatible package can cause a boot failure or require service intervention.

What rollback prevention protects—and what it cannot undo

Bootloader version enforcement

The bootloader starts the operating system and verifies that the software is permitted to run. Hardware-backed rollback prevention records an approved minimum version, so installing a newer approved bootloader can permanently prevent loading an older one. This is why a prior stable build may remain unavailable even if you still possess its installation package.

The restriction is not limited to the version number shown in Settings. Firmware packages contain component and bootloader revisions that must agree with the device’s hardware rules. A file that appears to be only one release older can still fail the check if it contains a disallowed bootloader.

Knox Warranty Bit and non-approved configurations

Knox also records whether the device has entered a non-approved configuration. Samsung describes the Knox Warranty Bit as a persistent hardware-backed indication of such a state. Reinstalling official software later does not necessarily erase that record. Do not assume that flashing back to stock software reverses every consequence of an unofficial modification.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is one reason a successful boot after manual flashing is not proof that the procedure was harmless. The phone may work while retaining a persistent Knox state, and future support or security-sensitive features may not behave as they did before. Treat any unofficial configuration as a separate decision from Samsung’s documented beta rollback.

Model and region differences

Samsung publishes software by exact device variant and market. Two phones sold under a similar commercial name can have different firmware tracks or bootloader levels. Do not substitute a package for another model, country or carrier simply because the interface looks familiar.

When asking for help, provide the exact model identifier, current software version, carrier or market information and the wording of any Smart Switch error. Those details are more useful than saying only that the phone is a particular Galaxy series.

Emergency Software Recovery is not a downgrade

If an update failed or was interrupted and the phone no longer operates normally, use Samsung’s Phone Recovery Guide: Emergency Software Recovery. The guide addresses recovery from an update failure, not a request to return from a working stable release to an earlier version.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Emergency recovery may require Smart Switch on another computer and a recovery code, depending on what happened to the original installation. Follow the guide for the exact prompts shown by Smart Switch. The recovery code is intended to help the recovery process identify the failed update state; it is not a license to choose an arbitrary older firmware package.

Do not choose emergency recovery simply because you dislike a new interface or feature; it is intended to restore a failed update state and can involve reinstalling software. If the phone still starts and your complaint is a changed setting, battery behavior or app incompatibility, troubleshoot that issue first rather than treating recovery as a downgrade menu.

Precautions before starting any software operation

  • Identify the software track. Confirm beta enrollment versus public stable release before you make changes.
  • Back up first. For beta rollback, use Smart Switch on a computer and verify the backup, because Samsung says the phone is reset.
  • Charge the phone. A power interruption during installation can worsen an already unstable device.
  • Use a reliable USB data connection. Choose a cable compatible with the phone and computer, connect directly where possible, and do not disconnect during the operation.
  • Keep the computer awake. Prevent sleep, restart prompts or security software interruptions while Smart Switch is working.
  • Do not operate the phone during installation. Samsung’s update guidance at How to update software on a Samsung smartphone advises keeping the device undisturbed while software is being applied.
  • Record your accounts and authentication methods. A reset can require the same Samsung or Google account used for device protection during setup.
  • Have a recovery plan. If the phone cannot boot afterward, use Samsung’s recovery guide or contact support; do not repeatedly interrupt the process.
  • Do not buy accessories as a workaround. A suitable USB data cable may be necessary for the beta workflow, but no cable, computer or Smart Switch version bypasses stable-release downgrade restrictions.

What to do when Smart Switch does not show Downgrade

Beta enrollment is still active

Return to Samsung Members and confirm that the withdrawal completed. Smart Switch may not offer the beta route while the phone is still enrolled. If the status is unclear, capture a screenshot or note the displayed enrollment message before contacting Samsung.

The phone is not recognized

Try another known-good USB data cable and a different computer USB port, install the current Smart Switch desktop application, and reconnect directly rather than through a hub. If the computer still cannot identify the phone, stop before attempting manual flashing and seek Samsung support.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A cable that charges the phone is not necessarily capable of carrying data. The practical accessory requirement is narrow: choose a cable compatible with the Galaxy model and the computer’s port. Buying a different cable can solve a connection problem, but it cannot make an unsupported stable downgrade available.

The beta option is unavailable for this device or market

Samsung’s public guidance does not state that every enrolled device receives the same downgrade control. Capture the phone’s model and software information and ask Samsung support or a service center whether the documented route is available for that specific build.

The phone is stuck after an interrupted update

Treat this as an update failure. Use Emergency Software Recovery, not the beta-downgrade instructions. The recovery guide explains when a recovery code and another computer are needed.

The button appeared but the process stopped

Do not unplug the phone simply because the screen looks unchanged. Check whether Smart Switch is still working and follow its error instructions. If it reports a completed failure, save the error text, leave the cable connected only as instructed, and move to Samsung’s recovery guidance or support rather than trying several firmware packages.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Why unofficial flashing is a different risk category

Manual flashing tools and downloaded firmware are often discussed as if they were interchangeable with Samsung’s Smart Switch workflow. They are not. Samsung’s stable-release policy and Knox rollback prevention still apply, and the exact bootloader revision must be accepted by the hardware. A package can fail validation, leave the phone unable to start, erase data or create a non-approved Knox state.

There is also no universal cost-saving shortcut. A compatible USB cable is a small, practical requirement for the documented beta process, but purchasing one does not change eligibility. If Samsung support or a service center is needed, ask about the specific device and failure before authorizing work; the available official guidance does not establish a blanket price or guaranteed repair outcome.

Because the Knox Warranty Bit is persistent, successfully reinstalling software does not guarantee that the device returns to its former security state. Proceeding outside Samsung’s documented beta route can also affect support or warranty handling. For a working stable phone, the safer decision is usually to troubleshoot the specific One UI problem, install available patches, or ask Samsung support for a model-specific remedy rather than attempting a downgrade.

Choosing the right path

Your condition Use this path Do not do this
Working phone on a One UI beta Withdraw in Samsung Members, back up with Smart Switch, then select Downgrade if offered Do not assume leaving the beta alone restores the prior software
Working phone on a public stable update Remain on the supported release and contact Samsung for a documented fix to the problem Do not promise that Odin, a firmware download or another Smart Switch version can bypass security restrictions
Phone will not operate normally after an update failure Follow Smart Switch Emergency Software Recovery Do not treat recovery as a way to select any older release
Downgrade button missing after beta withdrawal Verify backup and enrollment, then contact Samsung support or a service center Do not force an unverified package for another model, region or bootloader level

The key comparison is eligibility, not convenience. The beta route is documented because Samsung can identify the enrolled device and provide the appropriate non-beta software. A stable-release downgrade lacks that supported choice because the device may have advanced its minimum security level. Emergency recovery has a different purpose altogether: restoring a failed installation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What a successful beta rollback looks like

The phone restarts into the non-beta software path, and the initial setup may appear because the device was reset. Your personal content returns only from the backup or from services that synchronize it independently. Check that calls, mobile data, Wi-Fi, biometric unlock, Samsung account access and essential apps work before deleting the backup.

It is normal to need time for apps to reinstall, accounts to synchronize and settings to be configured again. That does not mean every beta-created item will return. Samsung’s warning about removal of beta-generated data is the reason to preserve anything important before selecting Downgrade.

If the phone remains in a boot loop, displays an update error or is not recognized by a computer, stop repeated attempts. Note the exact on-screen message, model number and software version, then use Samsung’s recovery documentation or support channel. Those details help distinguish a failed installation from a blocked downgrade.

Frequently asked questions

Can I roll back any Samsung One UI update?

No. Samsung documents the Smart Switch Downgrade route for an enrolled One UI beta. Samsung’s general support guidance says a public stable release cannot be downgraded to an older version with weaker security.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does leaving the beta automatically restore the old software?

No. Withdrawal in Samsung Members changes your beta participation status. You still need to connect the phone to a computer and use Smart Switch’s Downgrade option if Samsung offers it for that device.

Will beta rollback erase my phone?

Yes, expect a reset. Samsung says data generated during beta testing is removed. Make and verify a Smart Switch computer backup first, then restore it after the rollback.

Why is the Downgrade button missing?

Samsung does not promise universal availability across every model, market, carrier or enrollment. Confirm that you withdrew correctly and that the phone is recognized, then contact Samsung support or an authorized service center instead of forcing firmware.

Can Odin or an older firmware file bypass the restriction?

There is no universal safe workaround. Knox rollback prevention can record a minimum bootloader version in hardware and reject older software. A mismatched package can also cause boot failure or create a persistent non-approved Knox state.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

What if the update failed and the phone will not boot?

Use Smart Switch Emergency Software Recovery. Samsung’s recovery guide covers failed or interrupted updates and may call for another computer and a recovery code. It is not a method for choosing an older release on a working phone.

Do I need to buy a special cable?

You need a USB data cable compatible with the Galaxy phone and computer. A charge-only cable may not be recognized. A cable can fix a connection issue, but it cannot bypass Samsung’s stable-release security restrictions.

Can reinstalling official software clear the Knox Warranty Bit?

Do not assume so. Samsung describes the Knox Warranty Bit as a persistent hardware-backed indication of a non-approved configuration. Reinstalling software does not necessarily erase that record.

Bottom line

Samsung’s supported One UI rollback is a beta-only workflow: withdraw through Samsung Members, back up to a computer, connect by USB, and use Smart Switch’s Downgrade option when Samsung offers it for your device. Expect a factory reset and loss of beta-generated data. A public stable update is generally not downgradeable because Samsung blocks older, less-secure software and Knox can enforce a minimum bootloader version in hardware. Emergency Software Recovery is for a failed update, while unofficial flashing carries separate compatibility, data-loss and persistent Knox-state risks.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can every Galaxy phone roll back a One UI beta?

Samsung’s guidance does not promise the Downgrade control for every model, country, carrier or enrollment. If it is missing after you withdraw, verify the phone details and contact Samsung support.

What should I back up before a beta rollback?

Use Smart Switch on a computer, wait for it to confirm completion, and keep that backup until setup and essential app checks are finished. Samsung says the rollback resets the phone and removes beta-generated data.

Is Emergency Software Recovery another downgrade method?

No. It is intended for an update that failed or was interrupted and left the phone operating abnormally. It does not provide a menu for selecting any older stable One UI version.

Does a newer bootloader always prevent an older build?

Knox rollback prevention can fuse the approved bootloader version to hardware, establishing a minimum acceptable version. Older packages below that level may be rejected even when you still have the file.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Will a factory reset restore the previous One UI version?

No. A factory reset erases user data but does not replace the installed operating system or undo the bootloader security level.

Should I use a service center if Smart Switch fails?

If the beta Downgrade option is unavailable, the phone is not recognized, or recovery fails, stop repeated flashing attempts and provide Samsung support with the exact model, software version and error message.

The Bottom Line

In short: Samsung documents rollback for enrolled One UI beta software through Samsung Members and Smart Switch, with a required reset and backup. Stable public releases are generally protected from downgrade by security policy and Knox rollback prevention. Use Emergency Software Recovery only for a failed update, and treat unofficial flashing as a separate, higher-risk procedure.
