How to Roll Back a HyperOS Update on a Xiaomi Phone (What Xiaomi Supports)

By Freedom251 Team · · 10 min read

Short answer: Xiaomi says its smartphones do not support rolling back the system. There is no Xiaomi-supported HyperOS downgrade procedure that returns a phone to an earlier build. If an update causes battery drain, slow performance, crashes or app problems, Xiaomi’s documented sequence is to restart the phone, manually download the latest package from Settings, and, only after backing up, perform a factory reset. If the problem remains, submit feedback through Settings or ask Xiaomi Support about the exact model and region.

Community guides may describe unlocking the bootloader or flashing a package from a computer, but those are not Xiaomi-approved rollback methods. Xiaomi warns that such modifications can erase data, weaken security, create compatibility or boot failures, affect warranty service and leave the phone unusable. Treat them as unsupported experimentation, not as the next step in normal troubleshooting.

What “roll back HyperOS” actually means

A rollback, or downgrade, replaces the installed operating-system build with an older build. It is different from installing the newest copy of the same release, clearing temporary files, or resetting the phone. A true rollback would put an earlier HyperOS version back on the device, potentially reversing changes to system behavior, drivers, security components and bundled applications.

Xiaomi’s post-update troubleshooting FAQ states: “The Xiaomi smartphones do not support rollback of the system.” That is the relevant support position for a Xiaomi phone running HyperOS. The official instructions therefore address repairing or resetting the current installation, not selecting an earlier operating-system version.

That distinction matters when a phone develops a problem after updating. Restarting, downloading the latest package or resetting the device may resolve corrupted files or configuration problems, but none of those actions is a supported way to install an older HyperOS build.

Check your phone before troubleshooting

HyperOS behavior and update eligibility can differ by model, country, carrier and software region. Record the information below before changing anything. It gives Xiaomi Support enough detail to identify the relevant build and prevents you from applying instructions intended for another variant.

  • Model name and model number: Find them in Settings → About phone and, if necessary, on the original packaging.
  • Region or ROM variant: Note the country or region selected on the phone and any regional software identifier shown with the build number.
  • Current HyperOS version and build: Open Settings → About phone → Xiaomi HyperOS and save a screenshot or write down the complete version string.
  • When the symptom began: Record whether it appeared immediately after the update, after restoring apps or data, or only under a particular condition.
  • What is affected: Note battery life, heat, mobile data, Wi-Fi, camera, calls, storage, a particular app or general responsiveness.

Do not assume that an update is the only possible cause. A newly updated app, a damaged charger or cable, low free storage, a failing battery, a network change or an account-sync problem can produce symptoms that look like an operating-system fault.

Use Xiaomi’s supported steps in order

The sequence below follows Xiaomi’s documented post-update guidance. Move to the next step only if the previous one does not resolve the problem. Keep the phone charged and connected to a reliable network when downloading software.

1. Restart and reproduce the problem

  1. Save open work and close apps that are actively using the camera, navigation or a phone call.
  2. Use the phone’s normal power menu to restart it. If the interface is unresponsive, use the model’s standard forced-restart key combination described in its user guide rather than repeatedly interrupting the boot process.
  3. After the phone starts, test the same action that exposed the problem. Check whether the symptom occurs once or repeatedly, and note the conditions that trigger it.

A restart can clear a stalled process or temporary service state. It does not remove personal data and does not install an older HyperOS release. If the issue is intermittent, observe it long enough to tell whether it actually persists instead of treating one successful launch as a permanent fix.

2. Download the latest package manually

If the issue continues, Xiaomi’s FAQ directs users to download the latest available package from the phone’s update screen:

  1. Open Settings.
  2. Tap About phone.
  3. Tap Xiaomi HyperOS.
  4. Open the three-dot menu.
  5. Choose Down latest package.

The wording “Down latest package” is the label used in the cited Xiaomi instructions; a translation or later software version may display slightly different text. Select the option that downloads the newest package offered for that phone, not an older file obtained from a forum or file-sharing site.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Leave enough free storage for the download and installation, use a stable Wi-Fi connection if possible, and keep the battery sufficiently charged. Do not power off the phone while it is verifying or applying the package. If the menu is missing, the server reports that no package is available, or the download fails repeatedly, record the message and include it in a support request rather than substituting a package for another model or region.

This step refreshes the current supported software package. It should not be described as a downgrade, and it does not guarantee that a bug introduced by the update will be removed.

3. Back up, then consider a factory reset

Xiaomi places a factory reset after the restart and package-download steps and specifically says to back up first. A reset deletes user data and settings stored on the phone, including locally stored photographs, downloads, messages, authenticator data, app data and accounts that have not been synchronized elsewhere. It may also trigger account verification when the phone starts again.

Before resetting, confirm that you can restore the information you need:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Synchronize photographs, contacts, calendar entries and other data with the service you normally use, or copy them to another secure location.
  • Export data from apps that do not synchronize automatically, such as local notes, messaging archives or authenticator applications.
  • Make sure you know the passwords for the Xiaomi account, Google account and important apps.
  • Keep any required two-factor recovery codes available on another device.
  • Remove a microSD card or copy its contents if you are unsure whether a particular reset option will affect it.

Use the factory-reset command in Settings for your model and follow the on-screen confirmation. The exact menu can vary by HyperOS release. A reset returns the phone to a clean setup state; it does not reinstall an earlier HyperOS build. After setup, install updates and apps gradually so you can identify whether the original symptom returns before restoring every app and setting.

4. Submit feedback or contact Xiaomi Support

If the problem remains after the documented steps, Xiaomi says to submit feedback in Settings. Include the model, region, full HyperOS build, the date the problem started, reproducible steps, screenshots or recordings where safe, and the exact error text. Explain whether the issue occurs in Safe Mode or only in one app if you have already established that distinction through normal troubleshooting.

Ask Xiaomi Support about the specific device rather than requesting a generic downgrade file. Eligibility, available builds, bootloader policy and service options can change by model, account, region and current software version. A support representative can also determine whether a repair inspection is more appropriate than further software changes.

Why a factory reset is not a downgrade

A reset removes personal content and configuration so the current operating system can start from a clean state. It may fix conflicts left by an upgrade, a damaged setting or a misbehaving app. It does not change the HyperOS build number to an earlier release. Check Settings → About phone → Xiaomi HyperOS after setup if you need to verify which build remains installed.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Because a reset is destructive and irreversible for data that was not backed up, it should not be used as a quick test. First isolate the symptom, preserve evidence and confirm that your important information is synchronized. If the phone is needed for work, banking or two-factor authentication, prepare a replacement sign-in method before erasing it.

Why unofficial flashing and bootloader unlocking are risky

Search results and community posts often mention connecting a phone to a computer, obtaining authorization, unlocking the bootloader and flashing a recovery or fastboot package. Those discussions explain why a cable and PC may appear in online downgrade stories, but they do not establish a universal or Xiaomi-supported rollback procedure for your phone.

Xiaomi’s bootloader and flashing safety guidance identifies several risks:

  • Malicious or unverified firmware: A file from an unofficial source can contain altered software or be intended for a different device.
  • Data loss: Bootloader unlocking can erase the phone, and a failed flash can make recovery more difficult.
  • Boot failure: An interrupted or incompatible operation can leave the phone stuck at a logo, unable to start or requiring service.
  • Compatibility problems: Region, carrier, storage variant, modem and anti-rollback protections can make a package unsuitable even when the model name looks similar.
  • Loss of security protections: Unlocking or modifying system software can expose data and disable safeguards that depend on a locked, verified system.
  • Warranty or service consequences: Xiaomi warns that system-level modifications may affect warranty or support treatment; the effect depends on the applicable policy and market.
  • Permanent inoperability: Xiaomi’s flashing FAQ warns that the phone may become unusable if the process fails.

Xiaomi also notes that it does not have an established standard support procedure for every such modification. That means a tutorial that works on one device, region or build is not evidence that it will work on yours. Do not treat a community authorization screen or a USB connection as proof that an older HyperOS package is safe or eligible.

How the available choices compare

Action Officially supported for post-update troubleshooting? Effect on personal data Does it install an older HyperOS build? Best use
Restart Yes, listed first by Xiaomi No reset is described; personal data remains No Temporary freezes, stalled services or one-off failures
Download the latest package from the HyperOS screen Yes, listed by Xiaomi No wipe is described No; it applies the latest package offered for the device Suspected damaged or incomplete current installation
Factory reset after backup Yes, as a last resort Erases user data and settings No Persistent problems after less-destructive steps
Bootloader unlock or community flash No supported rollback method is established May erase data Not guaranteed; depends on eligibility and package compatibility Only an informed, model-specific enthusiast decision, with service and security risks

The table separates Xiaomi’s documented troubleshooting from unsupported modification. The last row is not a recommendation or a validated option; it explains why online instructions cannot be treated as an equivalent alternative.

Triage common symptoms without assuming a downgrade is needed

Battery drain or heat

Record battery use over a comparable period and note whether the phone is warm while idle, charging or running a particular app. Check for an app that began running continuously after the update and verify that the charger and cable are functioning correctly. A restart and the latest-package step are the supported first actions. If abnormal heat, swelling, smoke or a damaged battery is present, stop using the phone and seek qualified service rather than repeatedly reinstalling software.

Slowness, freezes or rapid app crashes

Identify whether the issue affects the entire interface or one application. Update the affected app through its normal store, check available storage and restart the phone. If only one app fails, its developer may need to fix compatibility; rolling back the entire operating system would not be an established solution. Capture crash messages before a reset, because a factory reset can remove useful evidence.

Mobile network, Wi-Fi or Bluetooth problems

Note the network, SIM or accessory involved and whether another location or device behaves normally. Reconnect using the phone’s standard settings and record carrier error messages. Do not flash a package from another region to change radio behavior: modem and regional compatibility are among the reasons Xiaomi warns against unverified system modifications.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

One feature changed after the update

Read the current HyperOS settings for that feature and check whether an app permission, privacy control or default application changed during setup. A feature change is not proof that the older system should be restored. If the behavior is reproducible, include exact steps and screenshots in feedback so Xiaomi can classify it accurately.

What to include in a support report

A precise report is more useful than simply saying that HyperOS is bad. Include:

  • Phone model, region and current HyperOS build.
  • Available storage and approximate battery level when the failure occurs.
  • The date and update path immediately preceding the symptom.
  • Exact reproduction steps, frequency and whether a restart changed anything.
  • Error messages, screenshots, screen recordings or logs that do not expose private information.
  • Whether the latest-package download completed and whether the phone was reset.
  • Any bootloader or system modification already performed; omitting it can make diagnosis less reliable.

If the phone cannot boot, is unusually hot, repeatedly reboots or shows signs of physical damage, stop experimenting with firmware. Tell Xiaomi Support exactly what happened and ask about an authorized service route for your market.

Bottom line for a HyperOS downgrade request

There is no Xiaomi-supported way to roll back a HyperOS update on a Xiaomi phone. Restart first, use Settings → About phone → Xiaomi HyperOS → three-dot menu → Down latest package, and consider a factory reset only after a complete backup. A reset troubleshoots the current installation; it does not restore an older build. For unresolved problems, submit detailed feedback or contact Xiaomi about the exact model and region. Bootloader unlocking and unofficial flashing carry data, security, compatibility, warranty and bricking risks and should not be presented as a safe generic downgrade recipe.
