The reliable workflow is MakeMKV first, then Plex or Jellyfin: read the Blu-ray with a compatible optical drive, choose either a full disc backup or selected titles, optionally convert the result with HandBrake, and place the finished files in predictable movie or TV folders. MakeMKV can copy Blu-ray and UHD discs to a hard drive while optionally decrypting video; HandBrake is a conversion tool, not a DRM bypass. Correct naming and a scan of the right top-level folders are what make the resulting library match consistently.
What you need before ripping
A Blu-ray workflow has three practical prerequisites: an optical drive that can read your disc type, software that can create a usable copy, and enough storage for both the working copy and the library file. UHD discs add another compatibility variable because not every optical drive or drive firmware can read them. Check the drive’s published Blu-ray and UHD support before buying or connecting it; an external USB drive is convenient, but its model and firmware still determine what discs it can read.

- Compatible optical drive: Confirm ordinary Blu-ray support, and UHD support separately if you plan to use 4K discs.
- MakeMKV: Use it to read a disc, select titles, or create a full backup. Its Backup function can copy a Blu-ray or UHD disc to a hard drive and can optionally decrypt the video.
- Optional HandBrake: Use it after MakeMKV when you need a smaller file, a different codec, or fewer audio and subtitle tracks. HandBrake does not process DRM-protected video.
- Working and library storage: Keep enough free space for the disc backup or temporary output and the final file. The amount varies substantially by disc, title selection, and encoding settings, so do not plan around a universal “Blu-ray size.”
- Plex or Jellyfin server storage: The server must be able to read the completed files and scan the folders where you put them.
Decide where the library will live before you start. A local internal drive, a directly attached external drive, and a NAS can all work, but moving large files twice is slow and increases the chance of an incomplete copy. Create separate top-level locations for movies and television before the first scan.

MakeMKV and HandBrake do different jobs
| Tool | Best use | What it does not do | Typical output |
|---|---|---|---|
| MakeMKV | Reads Blu-ray or UHD media, decrypts when supported, and either backs up the disc structure or writes selected titles to MKV. | It is not primarily an encoder for reducing video size. | A full disc backup or an MKV containing a selected title and chosen tracks. |
| HandBrake | Converts an accessible video into another codec or container and lets you keep only selected audio and subtitle tracks. | It does not work with DRM-protected video and cannot replace the disc-reading step. | A newly encoded MP4 or MKV, depending on your settings. |
Use MakeMKV alone when you value the disc’s original video and audio, have sufficient storage, and your playback clients can handle the resulting file. Add HandBrake only when a conversion solves a specific problem: storage pressure, a client that cannot direct-play the original stream, or a need to remove unwanted tracks. Every encode is a new generation of the video, so a smaller file can involve a quality trade-off.

HandBrake’s own documentation states that it “does not work with video files employing Digital Rights Management (DRM).” A MakeMKV-created copy is the type of accessible input HandBrake can open; HandBrake is not the stage that defeats disc protection.
Step 1: Read the disc in MakeMKV
Open the disc and identify the right title
- Connect the optical drive and insert the Blu-ray.
- Open MakeMKV and choose the drive containing the disc.
- Wait for the title list to load. Inspect running times, playlists, audio languages, subtitle tracks, and chapter information.
- Select the main feature or the extras you actually want. Avoid selecting every similarly named playlist until you have checked its duration and track layout.
- Choose an output folder on storage with adequate free space, then start the copy.
A title-oriented rip produces an MKV for each selected title. This is usually the simplest path for a movie library because the resulting file can be placed directly in a movie folder. Preserve the original language, commentary, descriptive audio, and subtitle tracks you may need; removing them later requires another conversion.
When a full backup is the better choice
MakeMKV’s Backup function copies the Blu-ray or UHD disc structure to a hard drive and can optionally decrypt the video at the same time. Use a full backup when you want to preserve menus, all playlists, extras, or a source that you may revisit later. The backup can subsequently be opened for ripping, so it also separates the optical-drive step from later title selection.
A full backup is not automatically the best library format. Plex and Jellyfin are media servers, not disc-menu emulators, and a large disc structure may be less convenient than a single, clearly named MKV. Keep the backup as an archive if you need it; create a title-based MKV for routine streaming when that better fits your clients.
BD+ and BD-Java cases
Some discs need more than a standard read. MakeMKV documents BD+ as a protection scheme that uses a BD+ virtual machine and keys; generic or disc-specific SVQ files may be required for processing. BD-Java can provide menus and playlist selection and can also participate in content protection. MakeMKV notes that some BD-Java cases require a Java runtime.
If a disc loads but shows no usable feature, reports an error, or presents many confusing playlists, first check MakeMKV’s current requirements for that protection type. Do not assume that installing HandBrake will solve it: HandBrake cannot process DRM-protected input, and it belongs after a successful, accessible MakeMKV copy.

Step 2: Choose an unconverted MKV or a HandBrake encode
Keep the MakeMKV output when direct playback is practical
The MakeMKV MKV preserves the selected video and audio streams without an additional encode. Keeping it avoids generation loss and saves the time required to re-encode. This option is attractive when your server and playback devices can direct-play the codecs, resolution, audio formats, and subtitle behavior present on the disc.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →“Direct play” is client-dependent. A file that plays natively on a television app may require server-side transcoding on a phone, browser, or older streaming box. Check the clients you actually use rather than assuming that a container extension guarantees compatibility.
Use HandBrake for a deliberate conversion
Open the accessible MakeMKV output in HandBrake, select the desired title, and configure the output for the clients and storage target you have chosen. Typical reasons include changing the video codec, reducing bitrate, selecting a different container, or retaining only specific audio and subtitle tracks. Keep the original MakeMKV output until you have checked the converted file; it is your recovery copy if the encode has missing tracks, wrong chapters, or playback problems.
- Verify that the picture fills the expected frame and that the runtime matches the source.
- Test the original language, commentary, and subtitle tracks you intend to keep.
- Seek through several chapters and check that audio remains synchronized.
- Only replace the source after the converted file has played successfully on the clients that matter to you.
There is no universal “best” codec or bitrate in the available documentation. The right setting depends on the source, your storage limit, and the playback devices; avoid treating a single encode preset as a guaranteed result for every disc.
Step 3: Build a Plex-friendly library
Plex recommends separating major media types and placing each movie in its own folder. Use a movie folder containing the title, release year, and the file with the same base name:
Movies/
└── Movie Name (year)/
└── Movie Name (year).mkv
Replace “Movie Name” and “year” with the actual title and release year. The year disambiguates remakes and similarly titled releases. Keep television in a separate Shows location rather than mixing movie files and episodes under one library root.

The pop-up button and built-in cable design offer convenience and portability. For desktop PCs, connecting to a rear USB port is recommended for optimal power and performance.
Plex’s documented edition syntax uses an edition label such as {edition-Final Cut}. Apply an edition label only when the file is genuinely a distinct cut or edition, and keep the rest of the title and year consistent. For unusual folder structures or disc backups, confirm current Plex playback support before building a large library around them; the cited Plex guidance focuses on naming and organization rather than guaranteeing every disc-structure arrangement.
Step 4: Build a Jellyfin-friendly library
Movies and supported disc structures
Jellyfin documents MKV and MP4 as common supported containers. It also documents BDMV and VIDEO_TS folders for movies. Disc-image formats such as ISO are not supported, so Jellyfin recommends remuxing an image into MKV or extracting the relevant content instead of pointing a library at ISO files.
Movies/
└── Movie Name (year)/
└── Movie Name (year).mkv
The same title-and-year convention helps Jellyfin identify the movie and choose the right metadata. If you retain a BDMV or VIDEO_TS structure, keep it inside the movie’s folder and verify the result with a test scan before converting an entire collection.
Recommended Free Tools
Television discs and episode naming
Television discs need episode-level organization. Jellyfin recommends a series folder, padded season folder, and episode filename:
Shows/
└── Series Name (year)/
└── Season 01/
├── Series Name S01E01.mkv
└── Series Name S01E02.mkv
Use two digits for season numbers, such as Season 01, and do not mix season folders with episode files directly in the series folder. Before ripping a disc, determine which playlist corresponds to each episode and name each resulting file with the correct season and episode number. If one disc contains extras, place them where Jellyfin’s current naming guidance can identify them as extras rather than episodes, or keep them outside the episode tree until you have verified how your installation handles them.
Step 5: Handle multiple cuts and versions
A theatrical cut, director’s cut, and extended cut should not be silently overwritten. Keep each version’s title prefix identical and add a clear edition or version suffix using the convention supported by your server.

Ideal for home, office, and travel scenarios: data backup, software installation, and multimedia playback (including Blu-ray). Keep your discs and devices organized at all times.
- Plex: Its support guidance documents labels such as
{edition-Final Cut}. - Jellyfin: It recognizes multiple movie versions when filename prefixes match exactly and a version suffix is added. Keep the shared title and year identical before the suffix so the files group as versions rather than unrelated movies.
Use separate folders only when your server’s current documentation requires that arrangement; otherwise, consistent prefixes make matching and version grouping more reliable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Step 6: Add the folders and scan the library
- Create separate top-level folders for Movies and Shows on the server’s storage.
- Move or copy the completed MKV, MP4, BDMV, or VIDEO_TS structure into the matching folder. Do not point Jellyfin at ISO images.
- In Plex or Jellyfin, add the corresponding top-level directory to a library of the correct type.
- Run a library scan and wait for file discovery and metadata matching to complete.
- Open several entries and verify title, year, poster, runtime, audio tracks, subtitles, and playback.
- For an unmatched title, correct the folder name and filename first. If needed, use the server’s manual match or metadata-edit controls and supply a metadata-provider ID where that product supports it.
Folder name, release year, and a consistent filename usually provide the strongest signal. A scan cannot repair a wrong episode number or a movie placed in the Shows library; fix the filesystem organization and scan again.
Plex and Jellyfin: practical differences
| Decision area | Plex | Jellyfin |
|---|---|---|
| Movie organization | Separate major media types; individual movie folders are the recommended method. | Use predictable movie folders and title/year names; MKV and MP4 are common supported containers. |
| Television organization | Use a dedicated TV library and episode-oriented names; confirm current Plex guidance for any unusual disc structure. | Series Name (year)/Season 01/Series Name S01E01.mkv; avoid mixing season folders and episode files in the series folder. |
| Disc folders | The cited guidance emphasizes naming and organization; verify current playback support for BDMV or VIDEO_TS before relying on them. | BDMV and VIDEO_TS are documented for movies; ISO is not supported and should be remuxed or extracted. |
| Multiple versions | Edition labels such as {edition-Final Cut} are documented. |
Matching filename prefixes plus a version suffix are used to recognize multiple versions. |
| Server model | A proprietary media-server ecosystem with its own client and remote-access behavior. | An alternative media server with its own clients and administration model; check current documentation for subscription, remote-access, and client-feature details. |
Troubleshooting by symptom
| Symptom | Likely cause | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| MakeMKV cannot open the disc | Drive incompatibility, damaged media, or a protection feature requiring additional support. | Confirm the drive reads the disc type; check MakeMKV requirements for BD+ SVQ support or BD-Java and Java-runtime cases. |
| Many playlists appear | Disc menus or BD-Java playlist selection can expose several candidates. | Compare running time, chapters, language tracks, and subtitle layout before selecting the feature. |
| HandBrake refuses the source | The input is still DRM-protected or was not successfully made accessible. | Complete the MakeMKV read first. HandBrake does not process DRM-protected video. |
| Movie is unmatched | Wrong title, missing year, inconsistent basename, or incorrect library type. | Use one movie folder, match the folder and file names, add the release year, and rescan or manually match. |
| Episodes merge or appear in the wrong season | Unpadded season numbers, incorrect episode codes, or files mixed into the series root. | Use Season 01 and S01E01 formatting and keep episode files inside the season folder. |
| Jellyfin does not show a disc image | The source is an ISO, which Jellyfin does not support. | Extract the content or remux the needed title into MKV and place it in the movie folder. |
| Playback triggers transcoding | The client cannot direct-play the source’s codec, audio, subtitles, or container. | Test another client, retain a compatible track, or create a HandBrake version for the devices you use. |
| Audio or subtitles are missing after conversion | The HandBrake track-selection settings omitted them. | Reopen the original MakeMKV output, select the required tracks, encode again, and verify before deleting the source. |
Storage, backups, and file hygiene
Keep the archival disc backup and the streaming library conceptually separate. A full backup preserves more of the source but consumes more storage and is less convenient for everyday playback. A title MKV is easier to name and scan. A HandBrake encode can reduce storage requirements but is another derived copy that must be checked.
- Use a temporary workspace for MakeMKV and HandBrake output so an interrupted job does not look like a finished movie.
- Finish copying a file before scanning it; incomplete files can produce missing metadata or failed playback.
- Preserve the original MakeMKV output until the converted file has passed picture, audio, subtitle, chapter, and client tests.
- Back up irreplaceable files or keep the physical disc available. A media-server library is not automatically a backup.
Legal and protection limits
Copyright and anti-circumvention rules differ by country and by use case. Whether you may bypass a disc’s protection for personal playback, archival use, accessibility, or any other purpose cannot be answered universally. Check the law where you live and the terms that apply to your discs before bypassing protection or sharing ripped files. Do not treat the technical ability of MakeMKV as proof that a particular copy is lawful.
Sharing the resulting files with people who do not own or have rights to the source can create additional legal issues, even when the files remain on a private server. Keep access controls and remote-sharing decisions within the permissions you actually have.

- Scan, inspect metadata, test playback, and correct unmatched items before repeating the process for the rest of the collection.
The Bottom Line
For most collections, rip with MakeMKV, keep the title as MKV unless a client or storage goal justifies HandBrake, and follow strict movie and episode naming before scanning Plex or Jellyfin. Treat BD+ and BD-Java as disc-specific compatibility issues, avoid ISO files in Jellyfin, and verify the law in your jurisdiction before bypassing protection or sharing copies.
