A 4K label or an MKV extension alone does not guarantee HDR or direct playback; the codecs, audio, subtitles, client hardware and server configuration all matter.
What you need before ripping
Prepare the hardware, software and storage before putting a valuable disc into the drive. UHD ripping is more demanding than reading an ordinary data Blu-ray because the optical drive must expose the disc’s UHD data in a way the extraction software can use.

A compatible optical drive
MakeMKV’s UHD guidance calls for a BDXL-compatible drive that supports LibreDrive. Do not assume that a drive described by a seller as “Blu-ray,” “4K,” or “UHD” will work. Compatibility depends on the exact hardware revision and firmware. Check the current MakeMKV drive guidance for the complete model and firmware combination before purchasing or changing anything.
The UHD FAQ commonly consulted for this process was last updated March 7, 2021. Treat it as general background rather than a timeless buying list: drive revisions and firmware can change, so verify the current status immediately before buying. A drive that works for one owner may fail after a firmware change or differ from another unit carrying a similar retail name.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Software roles
- MakeMKV: reads the disc, decrypts it when supported, and either saves selected titles as MKV files or creates a disc backup folder.
- HandBrake: optionally creates a new, smaller video encode. It does not preserve the original video stream because every HandBrake video job re-encodes video.
- Jellyfin: indexes the finished media, supplies metadata and either direct-plays it or converts it for a particular client.
Install current versions of the applications you use. MakeMKV’s own FAQ recommends the latest version for fixes and updates, and individual discs can behave differently, so keeping the software current is part of troubleshooting rather than an optional polish step.
Storage and a legal check
Have enough local storage for the temporary extraction and the final library. There is no reliable universal per-film size: a remux retains the source video and audio streams, while an encode depends on resolution, codec, bitrate, frame rate, audio choices and subtitle handling. Estimate capacity from your own discs and chosen workflow instead of relying on a generic “typical 4K movie” number.
Only copy discs that you own or otherwise have the right to copy. HandBrake states: “Do not use HandBrake or any other application to copy materials you do not own or have the right to copy.” That statement is not a jurisdiction-specific legal opinion. Rules on personal copies and circumvention of disc protection differ by country and may also contain narrow exceptions, so consult the law that applies where you live.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteStep 1: verify the drive before changing firmware
- Record the optical drive’s exact model, hardware revision and current firmware version.
- Compare that exact combination with current MakeMKV UHD/LibreDrive guidance.
- Confirm that the drive is BDXL-capable, not merely advertised as a standard Blu-ray reader.
- Check whether the guidance requires a particular firmware state. Do not flash firmware simply because an internet post recommends it; an incorrect or incompatible update can make the drive less useful.
- Test the drive with a disc you are entitled to copy before building a large workflow around it.
If MakeMKV cannot identify the drive as suitable for UHD work, stop at this stage and resolve compatibility. Changing application settings will not turn an unsupported optical mechanism into a UHD LibreDrive drive.
Step 2: extract the disc with MakeMKV
Choose a direct MKV extraction
- Insert the UHD disc and open MakeMKV.
- Let the application read the disc structure. Disc reading time varies with the drive, disc condition and title structure.
- Select the main feature rather than every bonus title if your goal is a normal movie library. Examine runtime, resolution and track information to distinguish the feature from menus, trailers and alternate presentations.
- Keep the video track and the audio, subtitle and chapter tracks you actually need. Retaining every commentary and duplicate subtitle increases the file’s complexity and size; removing a track is irreversible unless you extract again.
- Choose an output folder on storage with enough free space and start the save operation.
- Open the resulting MKV with a local player or inspect its tracks before deleting the disc or temporary files.
This produces a remux-style file: the extracted video stream is placed in an MKV container instead of being re-encoded. The operation may still process or copy audio and subtitle tracks, but it does not use HandBrake’s video compression stage.
Create a disc backup instead
MakeMKV can also back up Blu-ray and UHD content to a hard drive as a folder structure, with decryption optional in the backup workflow. A backup is useful when you want to preserve more of the disc structure or plan to make title selections later. It is not the same thing as an ISO image, and Jellyfin’s movie guidance does not support disc-image formats such as ISO.

For a straightforward Jellyfin film, selecting the feature and saving an MKV is usually easier to browse and maintain. A backup folder can contain more material than you need and may expose limitations around multiple versions, parts and external tracks when used directly as library media.

Step 3: decide between an MKV remux and a HandBrake encode
Make this decision per title or per library tier. A remux is the preservation option; an encode is the space-and-compatibility option. Neither is universally best.
| Choice | What happens to video | Storage and time | Playback considerations | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| MKV remux | The extracted video stream is retained; it is not re-encoded. | Usually requires substantially more storage than an encode, and the extraction can be completed without a lengthy compression pass. | Preserves the source codec and HDR characteristics, but a client still must support those codecs, profiles, bitrates and audio formats for direct play. | Owners who prioritize source fidelity, fast ingest and future flexibility. |
| HandBrake encode | Video is decoded and encoded again using the selected settings. | Can reduce storage use, but processing time and output size depend entirely on the source and settings. | Lets you target a codec, resolution, audio layout or bitrate that more of your clients can play, at the cost of a generation of video compression. | Libraries where storage is constrained or clients cannot handle the remux. |
Do not promise a fixed percentage reduction or lossless output from HandBrake. The result changes with the source, encoder, quality mode, frame rate, HDR treatment, audio tracks and subtitles. A smaller file is a trade-off, not a free conversion.
When a remux is the right first copy
Keep the MKV when you have adequate storage, want the disc’s original video quality, or are still learning what your clients support. It also gives you a high-quality source if you later create client-specific encodes. Check the audio and subtitle tracks: preserving an unusual audio codec does not guarantee that a television, phone or browser can decode it.
When to encode with HandBrake
Encode when you have measured a real playback or storage problem. Start from the remux, choose a codec and container supported by your target clients, and retain HDR only when the complete path—from file through server and client to display—supports it. Test a short sample or one title before converting a whole collection. Keep the remux until you have verified the encode; deleting it first removes your easiest recovery path.
Step 4: choose a container, tracks and naming scheme
MKV, MP4 and disc folders
Jellyfin supports common video formats including MKV and MP4, but container support is only the first check. A client may support MKV while lacking support for the codec, profile, audio format, subtitle type or bitrate inside it. Conversely, changing an MKV extension to MP4 does not convert the underlying streams.

Jellyfin supports BDMV folders for suitable library organization, but it does not support ISO disc images. Its guidance recommends remuxing disc images to MKV or extracting to VIDEO_TS/BDMV folders. Folder-based structures have documented limitations when a disc contains multiple versions, parts or external tracks, so a clearly named movie file is often less troublesome.
Use one folder per movie
Create a separate folder for each film and give the folder and primary file recognizable names. A practical pattern is:
Movies/
Film Title (Year)/
Film Title (Year).mkv
Use the release year when titles are ambiguous, and keep alternate cuts or editions distinguishable rather than placing several unrelated files in one directory. The naming should help Jellyfin identify the movie without requiring a menu structure from the original disc.
Preserve useful track information
- Keep the original video track when maintaining a remux.
- Retain the audio languages and commentary tracks you will use; remove duplicates only after checking them.
- Keep subtitles needed for dialogue, foreign-language sections or accessibility.
- Check chapter markers and runtime after extraction.
Track names shown by MakeMKV are clues, not a guarantee that every client will render them identically. Verify the final selection in Jellyfin and on the devices where you watch.
Step 5: add the files to Jellyfin
- In Jellyfin, open the server dashboard and go to the library settings.
- Add or edit a Movies library and point it at the parent folder containing the per-movie directories.
- Save the library configuration and run a scan.
- Open the movie’s detail page and correct the match if Jellyfin selected the wrong title or year.
- Start playback from each important client and inspect the playback information to see whether it is direct playing, direct streaming or converting.
The exact menu wording can vary by Jellyfin release and client, but the essential arrangement is stable: one movie folder, a metadata-friendly name and a supported media file. Jellyfin’s recognition system benefits from conventional names; it is not designed to infer your preferred edition from an anonymous file.
Direct play, direct stream and conversion
“4K” describes resolution, not compatibility. Jellyfin’s codec guidance explains that common containers such as MKV and MP4 are supported, while actual playback depends on the client. A capable client may direct play the original file. If the container is unsuitable but the streams are usable, the server may direct stream by repackaging. If the codec, profile, audio, subtitle or bitrate is unsupported, Jellyfin may convert the media.

- Please Note: To reach 10Gbps speed, keep the cable under 3.3 ft. For USB A Male to USB C adapters, try flipping the USB C connector. USB C Male to USB A adapters support bidirectional 10Gbps transfer within 3.3 ft
What conversion costs
- Video conversion uses server CPU or a supported hardware encoder.
- Audio conversion can be required even when the video is compatible.
- Subtitle burning can force a video conversion, depending on subtitle format and client behavior.
- High-resolution HDR conversion can be especially demanding and can change the viewing result.
Watch the playback dashboard during a test. If a powerful desktop plays directly but a television converts, the limitation is probably the television’s client capabilities or its connection, not the filename. If every client converts, inspect the source codecs and audio tracks before re-encoding the entire library.
HDR expectations
A 4K file is not automatically an HDR file, and an HDR file is not automatically displayed as HDR. The client, operating system, display connection and supported HDR format must all cooperate. Jellyfin can only deliver HDR correctly when the client hardware and software support the relevant format. Test on the actual display; a file’s resolution label cannot establish the result.

MakeMKV does not recognize the UHD disc
- Confirm the drive is the exact BDXL/LibreDrive-compatible model and firmware combination.
- Install the current MakeMKV release.
- Try another legally owned disc to separate a disc-specific problem from a drive problem.
- Inspect the disc for dirt or damage and allow the application to finish reading before assuming it is stuck.
If the drive is unsupported, do not expect a different output folder or Jellyfin setting to solve the issue. Resolve hardware and firmware compatibility first.
The wrong title was selected
Compare runtimes, resolution, chapter count, audio languages and subtitle tracks. UHD discs can include trailers, duplicate features, bonus material and alternate cuts. Select the feature that matches the edition you intend to catalog, then verify the resulting file before rescanning Jellyfin.
The movie appears in Jellyfin but will not play
- Confirm that the file opens in a local media player.
- Check Jellyfin playback information for the failing codec, audio track or subtitle.
- Test with subtitles disabled; image-based or otherwise unsupported subtitles can trigger conversion.
- Try the same title on another client to identify a device-specific limitation.
- If the remux repeatedly converts, make a HandBrake encode targeted to the least capable client you must support.
The server cannot keep up
Conversion is more demanding than direct play. Reduce avoidable conversions by choosing client-compatible codecs and audio, or create an encode ahead of time rather than transcoding during viewing. Do not infer server requirements from resolution alone: codec, frame rate, HDR handling, subtitle burning and simultaneous viewers all affect the workload.

Jellyfin creates duplicate or missing entries
Check that each movie has its own folder, that the title and year are recognizable, and that alternate versions are clearly named. Remove accidental backup folders or unrelated files from the Movies library path, then rescan. If a disc backup is being interpreted unpredictably, remux the intended feature to a single MKV and use that file as the library item.

A repeatable workflow for a growing collection
- Verify the drive and software before the first disc.
- Extract one representative title and retain the original MKV while testing.
- Record which clients direct play the file and which convert it.
- Choose a library policy: remux everything, encode selected titles, or retain remuxes as masters and create smaller derivatives.
- Adopt one folder-and-name convention and apply it consistently.
- Back up the library metadata and irreplaceable files according to your storage plan.
- After each software or client update, test a known remux and a known encoded title rather than assuming behavior is unchanged.
This approach prevents two expensive mistakes: compressing an entire collection before discovering that a client needed different settings, and buying or modifying a drive before confirming that it can read UHD media.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can Jellyfin play an ISO made from a 4K Blu-ray?
No. Jellyfin’s movie guidance does not support ISO disc images. Use a movie MKV or an appropriate VIDEO_TS/BDMV folder instead, while recognizing the documented limitations of folder structures for multiple versions, parts and external tracks.
Is MKV automatically better than MP4 for 4K playback?
Neither container guarantees playback. Jellyfin supports common containers including MKV and MP4, but the client must also support the contained video, audio, subtitle formats and bitrate.
Windows Errors? Fix Them Before They Spread
Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallCrashes, No Sound, or Screen Glitches?
Random freezes, missing sound and display glitches usually trace back to one bad driver. Find and replace yours safely.Free scan · under a minuteShould I delete the remux after making a HandBrake encode?
Keep it until the encode has been checked on every important client and you have a backup or other recovery plan. The encode is a new video stream and cannot restore the original quality if its settings are unsuitable.
Why does a 4K movie trigger transcoding on one device but not another?
Client capabilities differ. One device may support the source codec, audio and subtitles for direct play while another requires Jellyfin to convert one or more streams.
The Bottom Line
Use a verified BDXL/LibreDrive-compatible drive and current MakeMKV to extract an owned UHD disc, keep an MKV remux when fidelity and flexibility matter, and use HandBrake only when storage or client compatibility justifies a new encode. Organize each film in its own clearly named Jellyfin folder, then test direct play and HDR on the devices you actually watch.
