If your recovery phrase or private key was exposed, revoking an approval is not enough: move every remaining asset to a newly created wallet with a new recovery phrase. Solana transactions are permanent, so neither action reverses tokens already transferred.
First stop signing prompts and disconnect from the suspicious site. Then establish whether you granted a bounded token allowance or disclosed the key that controls the wallet. Those are different incidents with different fixes.

Take these actions first
- Stop interacting with the suspicious site. Close it, reject new wallet prompts and do not follow instructions from a token group, “support” account or recovery service that asks you to sign another transaction.
- Verify the site and every transaction. Solana’s Staying Safe on Solana guide recommends checking the recipient, confirming the source and refusing a transaction you do not understand. Use a known-good bookmark or an official project channel rather than a link in a direct message.
- Classify the permission. A normal token-account delegate is an address with an allowance for one token account. A stolen seed phrase or private key lets an attacker sign as the wallet owner. A permanent delegate is a mint-level Token Extension authority and is not removable by the owner of an individual token account.
- Preserve evidence. Record the wallet and token-account addresses, transaction signatures, timestamps and amounts before you make changes. This helps you understand what happened and make a report; it does not create a way to reverse a confirmed transaction.
Never type a recovery phrase into a website, form, chat or “recovery” tool. Solana states in its safety guide: “Your seed phrase is the most important thing to protect” and “No legitimate service will ask for your seed phrase.”

For a standard Solana token account, the owner can approve one delegate address and specify a delegated amount. That delegate may transfer or burn tokens from that particular token account, up to the allowance documented in Solana’s Approve Delegate material. It is a token-account permission, not a replacement for the wallet’s signing key.

Only one current delegate is stored on a token account. Approving another delegate replaces the earlier delegate and allowance. Consequently, finding an unfamiliar delegate is a reason to stop using the account and investigate; it does not by itself prove that the wallet’s recovery phrase was stolen.
Spend permissions are bounded by the delegated amount. Solana’s Spend Permissions documentation describes the allowance model, while the Token Program’s Revoke instruction removes the delegate field and sets the delegated amount to zero.
Choose the remedy that matches the authority
| Situation | Where the authority lives | Correct action | What the action does not do |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ordinary token-account delegate | One token account, with a specified allowance | The token-account owner signs Revoke; the delegate and delegated amount are cleared |
It does not return tokens already transferred or secure a wallet whose key was exposed |
| Recovery phrase or private key exposed | The wallet’s signing authority, potentially controlling every asset and account it can sign for | Create a new wallet with a fresh phrase and transfer remaining assets after verifying each destination | Revoking one token-account delegate does not invalidate the exposed key |
| Token Extension permanent delegate | A mint-level authority that can apply across token accounts for that mint | Only the authority that controls the mint can change the mint configuration; an individual token-account owner cannot revoke it | A user-level Revoke instruction does not remove the permanent delegate |
| Mint or freeze authority | A separate authority role on the mint | Use the relevant authority-management operation only when you control and understand that role | Changing a mint authority is not a routine response to a wallet approval incident |
The ordinary-delegate behavior is specified by Solana’s Revoke Delegate and Approve Delegate documentation. The permanent-delegate scope is covered in Permanent Delegate. Roles such as mint authority and freeze authority are described separately in Set Authority.
How to revoke an ordinary token-account delegate
Identify the source token account
Revoke operates on the token account that holds the allowance, not on a wallet address in the abstract. A wallet can control multiple token accounts, including separate accounts for different mints. Determine which token account appears in the approval transaction or account details, and verify the mint address before signing anything.

If you are unsure what you signed, inspect the original transaction and the affected account through a trusted wallet or explorer interface. Do not install an unverified “approval checker,” paste your seed phrase into one, or sign a diagnostic transaction whose purpose is unclear.
Use the protocol instruction
Solana documents the command-line form as:
spl-token revoke <TOKEN_ACCOUNT_ADDRESS>
Run it only in a properly configured environment, against the intended Solana network, and after checking that the token-account address is correct. The token-account owner must sign the transaction. The official SPL Token CLI Reference provides the command context and syntax.
- Copy the exact token-account address from the transaction or account record; do not substitute the wallet address.
- Confirm that your CLI is connected to the network where the account exists and that the signing wallet is the account owner.
- Run
spl-token revoke <TOKEN_ACCOUNT_ADDRESS>. - Review the wallet’s signing prompt. Check the program, account and instruction details. Reject it if the destination, network or requested operation does not match a delegate revocation.
- Wait for confirmation, then inspect the token-account state to verify that the delegate is absent and the delegated amount is zero.
Wallet applications may expose a Revoke control, but labels and flows differ by wallet and version. Do not assume a button named “disconnect,” “revoke approvals” or “reset” performs the Token Program’s Revoke instruction. If the interface does not show the exact account and operation, use protocol documentation or a verified wallet support channel rather than guessing.

Understand the limits of revocation
- Revoke is all-or-nothing for the current allowance; it does not reduce the allowance to a chosen partial amount.
- After confirmation, the previous delegate no longer has authority to transfer or burn tokens on behalf of that token account under that delegation.
- Any transfer or burn that completed before the revoke remains on-chain. Solana’s safety guidance explains that transactions are permanent; revocation is not a chargeback or recovery mechanism.
- If the attacker can sign as the wallet owner, they may create new approvals or transfer assets directly. Move remaining assets to a new wallet instead of relying on Revoke.
How to tell whether your signing key may be exposed
Treat the recovery phrase or private key as compromised if you typed it into a website, sent it to anyone, stored it in an untrusted app or file, photographed it in a place others can access, or approved a prompt that explicitly requested it. A legitimate wallet recovery flow may ask you to enter a phrase into the wallet application itself, but no website or support representative should request it.

A suspicious token approval alone is narrower: it identifies an allowance granted to a particular address. It does not establish that the phrase was disclosed. Conversely, a drained account, an unexpected owner-signed transaction or repeated unauthorized activity is consistent with a broader key compromise and should be handled as such, even if you also revoke a delegate.
Do not test an exposed phrase by importing it into another wallet and continuing to use it. Importing reproduces the same keys; it does not make them safe. Solana’s What is a Wallet? guide explains that the recovery phrase provides access to the wallet.
Move remaining assets when the phrase or private key is at risk
Solana advises moving remaining assets to a new wallet after something goes wrong. The destination must be created from a verified official wallet source and must have a new recovery phrase that has never been exposed.
- Prepare a clean environment. Stop using the suspected wallet for new applications. Obtain wallet software from its verified official distribution channel, not from a message or an advertisement.
- Create a new wallet. Generate a fresh recovery phrase. Write it down offline, store it where other people and malware cannot access it, and never photograph or upload it. Do not reuse any phrase from the old wallet.
- Confirm the new address independently. Compare the destination address on the device or wallet screen with the address you intend to use. A single altered character can send assets elsewhere.
- Transfer assets in a deliberate order. Start with the assets you can move safely and leave enough SOL in the old wallet to pay required network fees. Review each transaction’s recipient, mint and amount before signing.
- Check confirmation. Verify that each transfer reached the new wallet before proceeding to the next. If an asset has special account or transfer rules, read the relevant token documentation instead of signing an unfamiliar instruction.
- Retire the old wallet. Disconnect it from applications and treat its phrase as permanently unsafe. Do not send new funds to it or use it for approvals.
A new wallet changes control of the assets that remain; it cannot retrieve tokens already sent to an attacker. If the old phrase was merely lost and never exposed, the problem is different: without that phrase, recovery is impossible, but creating a replacement wallet does not restore access to the old one.

Permanent delegates: why an account-level revoke may not help
The Token Extension Program’s permanent delegate is set at the mint level. Its authority may transfer or burn tokens across token accounts for that mint, subject to the mint’s configuration. Because the permission belongs to the mint rather than to an individual token account, the owner of one token account cannot remove it with Revoke.
When evaluating a memecoin, distinguish the token’s mint configuration from an approval you personally granted. If the concern is a permanent delegate, review the mint’s authorities and the project’s disclosures; do not tell yourself that clearing a token-account delegate has removed the mint-level power.
Other authority changes are a separate operation
Solana’s Set Authority documentation covers roles including mint authority and freeze authority. Setting a selected role to None permanently removes that role, so the operation is irreversible and should be performed only by the authority holder who understands the consequences. It is not a standard wallet-safety step after losing money in a memecoin, and it does not repair a compromised recovery phrase or reverse a transfer.

- Wallet address and every affected token-account address
- Mint addresses, token amounts and the SOL balance before and after the incident
- Transaction signatures, dates and approximate times
- The site URL, domain spelling and any messages or prompts you received
- Which phrase, key or approval may have been exposed, without writing the secret itself into the record

Recognize recovery scams
Scammers often contact victims after a public loss and claim they can trace or return funds. Solana warns that legitimate support does not initiate unsolicited direct messages and that recovery-offer messages are untrustworthy. Do not pay a fee, connect the affected wallet, sign a “verification” transaction or disclose a phrase to someone promising recovery.
Prevent the next approval from becoming a loss
Read the transaction, not just the button label
Before signing, identify the program, source token account, recipient, mint, amount and authority change. A familiar-looking “claim,” “mint” or “verify” button can still request a transfer or approval. If the wallet cannot present intelligible details, cancel and investigate through an official source.
Keep recovery material offline
Solana calls the seed phrase the most important thing to protect. Store it offline, limit who can access it and never enter it on a website. A support agent, moderator, auditor or recovery service should not need it.
Consider a hardware wallet for substantial holdings
Solana’s safety guide says hardware wallets are appropriate for large amounts. This is a forward-looking protection measure, not a way to recover a memecoin loss, undo a transaction, revoke a compromised key or guarantee safety. The guide does not establish a particular manufacturer, model or price; choose a device only through a verified official source and learn its confirmation workflow before moving significant funds.
Separate experimental activity from savings
Use a wallet with only the amount needed for a new application or token experiment, and keep long-term holdings away from sites you have not independently verified. This limits the damage of an allowance or malicious transaction, but it does not replace reading every signing request.
Quick Recap
What can and cannot be reversed
| Event | Possible response | Expected result |
|---|---|---|
| Unwanted delegate still present | Owner-signed Revoke on the affected token account | That delegate’s remaining allowance is cleared |
| Tokens already transferred or burned | Document, report and contact legitimate authorities where appropriate | No protocol-level reversal is established; confirmed Solana transactions remain permanent |
| Recovery phrase or private key disclosed | Create a new wallet and transfer remaining assets | Future control moves to the new keys; the old keys remain unsafe |
| Permanent delegate on a mint | Review the mint-level authority and its governance | An individual token-account Revoke does not remove the permanent delegate |
| Lost phrase with no backup | Search for the securely stored original backup | Without the phrase, access cannot be recovered |
A safe decision checklist
- I stopped signing prompts from the suspicious site.
- I verified the domain and did not follow unsolicited support messages.
- I identified whether the event involved a token-account delegate, a permanent delegate or a signing-key exposure.
- I recorded the exact token-account and mint addresses.
- I revoked the ordinary delegate with the owner’s signature when that was the actual permission.
- I did not assume revocation returned previously transferred tokens.
- I created a fresh wallet and moved remaining assets when the old phrase or key might be exposed.
- I protected the new phrase offline and never entered it on a website.
- I documented signatures and amounts without publishing secrets.
- I ignored anyone offering recovery through an unsolicited direct message.
