If you use a self-custody wallet, disconnecting from a dapp does not remove the token permissions you previously granted it. Review approvals on every network you use, revoke permissions that are unnecessary or untrusted, and inspect unfamiliar transactions separately. Revocation can prevent future use of an allowance; it cannot undo a transfer that has already happened.
Token approval, wallet connection, and transaction: what’s the difference?
A token approval is an on-chain permission allowing a dapp or smart contract to access and move a specified token from your wallet. Some approvals grant access to an effectively unlimited amount. For NFTs, an ERC-721 or ERC-1155 setApprovalForAll permission can cover every NFT associated with a contract. MetaMask explains token approvals in its token approval guide.

A wallet connection is different: it lets a site communicate with your wallet, but disconnecting does not cancel permissions already recorded on-chain. Ethereum.org says these permissions do not expire automatically; an unused approval can remain active until you change it. See its guide to revoking smart contract access.
A transaction is an action recorded on-chain, such as transferring tokens. Revoking an approval changes what a contract can do in the future; it does not reverse a transfer that has already been made.

Find approvals on every network you use
- Open the checker directly. Use the official site for the checker, not a link in an unsolicited message. Ethereum.org lists Revoke.cash, Revokescout, and Etherscan’s Token Approval Checker as options. Tool coverage and behavior can change.
- Select the same network in your wallet and the checker. A result for one network does not show approvals on other networks. Repeat the review for each network where you have used the wallet.
- Review the details of each permission. Check the spender or contract, the token, and the allowance amount. Treat permissions you do not recognize or no longer need as candidates for revocation; investigate unfamiliar contract identities rather than relying on a label alone.
- Check NFT permissions as well as token allowances. Look for permissions that authorize a contract to manage all NFTs associated with a collection contract. Some older or non-standard NFT approvals may not appear in standard indexer results; Revoke.cash notes that you may need to inspect the collection interface or a block explorer.
These tools are not a comprehensive independent ranking, and their network or permission coverage may differ. Choose one that supports the network and approval type you need to inspect, and confirm that it offers a revocation action for that permission.
Revoke an approval and confirm the change
- Select the permission you intend to remove in the checker and choose its revoke action.
- Review the wallet transaction prompt. Confirm that the transaction corresponds to the intended revocation. Do not approve an unrelated transaction or signature.
- Submit the transaction and pay the network fee. Revocation is an on-chain transaction, so it requires the network’s fee and must be processed before the permission changes.
- Refresh and verify. After processing, refresh the checker and reconnect if needed. Confirm that the permission no longer appears or is shown as disabled.
For ERC-20 tokens, revoking sets the allowance to zero. For NFTs, it disables the corresponding approval. The exact transaction prompt and checker display can vary by network and tool.

What revoking changes—and what it does not
Revocation blocks future use of that specific permission; it does not remove a staking, lending, or pooling position, and it cannot recover assets already transferred. However, a service may require a fresh approval before you can add funds or use it again. Revoke.cash also notes that active NFT marketplace listings may depend on keeping their approval active. Consider these effects before revoking a permission you still rely on.

Investigate transactions you do not recognize
- Open your wallet’s activity view and identify the transaction or transactions you cannot account for.
- Open the transaction in the relevant block explorer. Check its date and time, recipient, dapp or contract, and value. Compare those details with activity you remember, such as a swap, transfer, or interaction with a service.
- Check the address and transaction hash against relevant explorers or reporting resources when useful. A familiar-looking label or a security badge is not proof that an action is safe.
- Interpret security indicators cautiously. MetaMask says that lacking a verified badge does not, by itself, mean a contract is unsafe. Its risk alerts and transaction simulations also do not guarantee that every threat will be detected. See its guidance on managing security alerts.
A clean approval list does not rule out a compromised recovery phrase or private key, malware, phishing, a malicious signature, or another route to unauthorized activity. Approval review and transaction investigation answer different questions.

If you found only an unwanted approval
Verify that you are using the checker’s official site, confirm the network and permission, then revoke it and verify the change after the transaction processes. This addresses that permission only; it does not establish that the wallet or device is otherwise secure.

If you see unauthorized transactions or suspect a stolen key
- Stop using the compromised wallet and recovery phrase. MetaMask’s guidance for unauthorized transactions advises creating a new wallet in a separate browser profile or on a separate device, and discontinuing use of compromised accounts.
- Do not send funds to the old wallet just to pay gas if you suspect a sweeper script. MetaMask warns that a sweeper may automatically take funds added to cover transaction fees.
- Move remaining assets only if it is safe. The right response can depend on the nature of the compromise; do not assume that revoking approvals alone secures a wallet whose recovery phrase or private key may be exposed.
- Preserve evidence such as transaction hashes, wallet and recipient addresses, screenshots, and relevant communications for reporting.
Blockchain transactions cannot be reversed. Be cautious of anyone who promises to recover funds in exchange for more money or access to your wallet.
