Disconnecting a marketplace from your wallet is not enough: an existing on-chain approval can remain active. Revocation prevents future use of that permission; it cannot undo a transfer that already happened.
What an approval lets a marketplace or contract do
A wallet connection lets a dApp interact with your wallet session and view public account information. A token approval is different: it grants a spender contract permission to access specified tokens. Connecting to a marketplace alone does not give it that token-moving authority.

For fungible tokens, an ERC-20 allowance sets how much a spender can use. For NFTs, ERC-721 and ERC-1155 approvals can authorize a marketplace or operator to transfer tokens covered by the permission. An approval is specific to the relevant token or collection contract and blockchain.

Disconnecting a dApp ends its wallet connection, but it does not erase an approval already recorded on-chain. A disconnected marketplace may still have an unrevoked allowance it can use. Revoking is an on-chain transaction that removes or changes that token permission.

- Effortlessly build your crypto portfolio via the all in one Ledger Wallet app: buy, sell, send, receive, swap, stake and more across popular blockchains. 15,000+ coins & tokens in a single dashboard. Keep a close eye on the market. Compare service providers. Track performance. Get timely alerts. Build your portfolio with confidence.
- Enjoy Bluetooth connectivity, iOS access, and hours of battery use with this mobile-first, secure backup signer. Freedom you can depend on.
- Genuine Check: confirm your signer is authentic during setup with the Ledger Wallet app.
- Protect your signer: keep it in mint condition at all times with a bespoke Pod or Case to avoid scratches and everyday wear and tear.
Revocation also does not reverse completed transfers. It stops future use of the revoked permission after the transaction confirms; it cannot retrieve assets already moved.
How to find and revoke approvals
- Choose the account and network. Open your wallet’s official approval-management feature or navigate directly to a well-known approval checker. Verify the site’s domain before connecting your wallet. Select the wallet account and blockchain where you created the approval. For example, OpenSea’s February 21, 2024 guide points Ethereum users to Etherscan’s Token Approval tool and notes that it is a third-party service: OpenSea’s approval-revocation guide.
- Review the permission details. Check the token or NFT collection, spender contract, approval amount or operator permission, and network. Decide which spenders you recognize and still need. A displayed project name is not proof that a contract is safe; verify unfamiliar permissions using official project or collection information.
- Start revocation in the checker or wallet. Select the specific permission you want removed and choose its revoke action. The exact controls vary by service. If you use MetaMask’s Portfolio approval-management feature, its support documentation listed Ethereum Mainnet, Polygon, and BNB Chain as supported networks when accessed October 4, 2026. Check the current support page for availability: MetaMask’s revocation instructions.
- Inspect the wallet transaction before confirming. Revocation requires an on-chain transaction and gas. Confirm that the wallet shows the expected network and action before signing; fees vary, so there is no single reliable fixed cost. Do not approve a transaction you do not understand.
- Verify after confirmation. Refresh or reconnect the checker and confirm the permission no longer appears or shows as revoked. Ethereum.org recommends reconnecting after a few minutes to check the update: ethereum.org’s revocation guide.
- Repeat on other networks. Review each chain where you have used a marketplace or dApp. An Ethereum approval checker will not show permissions on Polygon or another network.
Limited versus unlimited ERC-20 allowances
Some approval prompts let you choose how many tokens a spender may use. MetaMask’s July 10, 2026 explainer describes the trade-off: a limited approval caps access at a specified amount, while an unlimited approval authorizes the maximum possible amount and remains available until manually revoked. An unlimited allowance can expose the approved token balance if the spender is compromised.

| Allowance | Maximum token amount exposed | How long it remains usable | Convenience and fees |
|---|---|---|---|
| Limited | Capped at the amount you authorize. | Usable until the allowance is spent, changed, or revoked. | May mean approving again and paying additional network fees when you need more. |
| Unlimited | Can cover the maximum possible amount of that token. | Remains active until you manually revoke it. | Fewer approval prompts and transactions, but greater exposure if the spender is compromised. |
Where the wallet or dApp offers a limited amount, choose one that fits the transaction rather than approving more for convenience. The smaller allowance limits what that spender is authorized to use, but does not eliminate the need to check the spender and network carefully.
What revocation changes for NFT listings
Removing an NFT marketplace’s approval can affect listings that depend on it. OpenSea says its services cannot buy, sell, or transfer an NFT under that permission until approval is granted again. Revoke.cash also notes that active OpenSea listings require the relevant approvals to remain active. If you want to keep using a listing or marketplace feature, you may need to approve the relevant NFT or collection again.

Why a clean checker list is not a guarantee
Approval checkers depend on contract behavior and the events they index. Revoke.cash says its NFT detection uses standard ERC-721 and ERC-1155 approval events; older collections such as CryptoKitties may not emit the events standard checkers rely on. A clean list therefore does not prove that every historical or custom permission has been found.
If a permission seems missing or an unfamiliar collection behaves unexpectedly, consult the collection’s official documentation or an appropriate block explorer. Do not sign a transaction simply because a checker labels it as a cleanup action.

Optional security measures are separate
A hardware wallet can add a layer of security for funds and NFTs, as OpenSea notes in its safety guidance, but it does not remove approvals already recorded on-chain. Approval review and revocation remain necessary if you want to remove an existing token permission: OpenSea’s NFT safety guide.
