How to Revoke and Replace a Compromised TLS Certificate

How do I revoke and replace a compromised TLS certificate? Treat the certificate and its private key as untrusted, regain control of the server, DNS, deployment pipeline and certificate-authority accounts, request revocation from the issuing CA, create a completely new key pair, issue a replacement certificate, install it everywhere TLS terminates, and verify every hostname and endpoint. Revocation alone does not clean a hacked server, recover a stolen DNS account or stop every client immediately accepting the old certificate.

The exact screens and commands depend on your CA, ACME client and hosting platform. The sequence below separates the security decisions that apply broadly from provider-specific actions that must follow your issuer’s current instructions.

What a compromised TLS certificate means

A TLS certificate binds hostnames to a public key. The corresponding private key proves possession during a TLS handshake. If an unauthorized person copied that private key, the certificate is no longer safe even if the web server itself appears normal. An attacker may be able to impersonate the covered names wherever clients trust the certificate.

RFC 5280 identifies compromise or suspected compromise of the corresponding private key as a reason for a CA to revoke a certificate. You do not need courtroom-level proof before acting: a key found in a public repository, exposed backup, stolen server image or unknown process should be handled as compromised until investigated.

  • Private-key exposure: revoke the certificate and replace it with a certificate that uses a newly generated key.
  • Server, DNS or account compromise: contain and remediate those systems as well; a new certificate issued through an attacker-controlled account does not restore trust.
  • Unknown scope: assume every certificate using the exposed public key may be affected until you complete an inventory.

The safe recovery sequence

Phase Objective Completion evidence
Contain and assess Stop unauthorized access and preserve incident evidence. Privileged credentials, server, DNS and CA accounts are controlled by trusted personnel.
Inventory Find the installed certificate and other certificates using the same key. Serial numbers, hostnames, endpoints and key reuse are documented.
Revoke Submit an authenticated request to the issuing CA. The CA reports an accepted revocation request and reason.
Rekey and issue Create a fresh key pair and obtain a certificate for the required names. The replacement has a different public key and the intended identifiers.
Deploy and verify Replace the old certificate at every TLS termination point. External and internal checks show the new certificate and chain everywhere.

1. Contain the compromise before trusting the replacement

Start an incident record with times, affected names, certificate serial numbers, fingerprints, suspected exposure path and people who handled the response. Preserve relevant logs before rotating or deleting systems if your incident-response process requires forensic evidence.

Regain control of the systems that could issue or serve certificates

  • Isolate or rebuild a host that may have been breached. Do not generate the replacement key on a machine you cannot yet trust.
  • Rotate credentials for the server, deployment system, DNS provider, certificate-authority account, cloud control plane and administrator identities that could request or install certificates.
  • Review API tokens, SSH keys, automation secrets, DNS API credentials and backup access. Revoke unknown tokens and remove unauthorized users.
  • Check DNS records, certificate-authority account activity, ACME orders, deployment logs and load-balancer configuration for changes you did not authorize.
  • Block or monitor suspicious egress and preserve volatile evidence according to your organization’s response plan.

Accidental publication, theft from a server and temporary attacker control of a server or DNS environment are all compromise scenarios described in Let’s Encrypt’s revocation guidance. If control of an identifier has been lost, do not proceed as though a normal renewal were sufficient; recover that control first.

2. Identify every certificate that needs attention

Begin with the certificate currently served

Record the certificate’s subject alternative names, serial number, issuer, validity dates, fingerprint and public-key algorithm. Map each name to its production and non-production endpoints. Include direct origins, reverse proxies, load balancers, CDNs, service meshes, mail gateways, APIs, management interfaces and IPv4 or IPv6 listeners that terminate TLS.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Search for reuse of the exposed key

When the same key pair was copied to several systems, revoking only the certificate you noticed leaves the others exposed. Compare the SubjectPublicKeyInfo (SPKI) of the suspected key with certificates in your inventories and Certificate Transparency records. Let’s Encrypt’s guidance describes matching SPKI values and using Certificate Transparency logs or a log monitor to locate certificates that contain the same key.

  • Search your certificate-management database, configuration repositories, image registries and backups for the key fingerprint or SPKI hash.
  • Search Certificate Transparency data for the public-key identifier and all relevant names, including old names that may still resolve.
  • Check certificates issued by every CA, not only the CA that issued the certificate first found.
  • Mark certificates as served, not served, expired or unknown; an expired certificate may still reveal where the key was copied.

If the private key was reused for signing, encryption or another protocol, treat those uses as separate incidents and rotate the key everywhere. A certificate replacement does not invalidate copies of the key held in archives or images.

3. Request revocation from the issuing CA

Use the CA’s supported, authenticated revocation process. The issuer may require the original account, a proof-of-control challenge or another authorization method. Keep the request receipt, timestamp and resulting certificate status in the incident record.

Let’s Encrypt and ACME

Let’s Encrypt documents revocation through its ACME API, normally called by an ACME client such as Certbot. Its three authorization routes are:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. the account that originally issued the certificate;
  2. another authorized account that can demonstrate control of every identifier on the certificate; or
  3. the certificate’s private key.

If a host or DNS environment was compromised, the alternative-account route still requires you to demonstrate control of the identifiers. Do not use an attacker-controlled DNS account or server for that proof. Follow the current ACME client’s revocation workflow rather than copying a command intended for a different client or version.

Choose the reason that matches the event

Situation Let’s Encrypt reason guidance Important qualification
You suspect an unauthorized person accessed the private key. keyCompromise Let’s Encrypt says subscribers should select this reason when they have reason to believe the key was exposed.
You are replacing a still-safe certificate with a new one. superseded This is for replacement, not a substitute for keyCompromise when exposure is suspected.
You no longer use the certificate or no longer control all included names. Use the corresponding reason offered by the CA. Reason names and policies are CA-specific; verify the issuer’s current documentation.

Let’s Encrypt’s revocation documentation, last updated July 31, 2025, states: “When a certificate is no longer safe to use, you should revoke it.” For another CA, do not assume these exact authorization routes or reason codes exist.

4. Generate a new key and issue the replacement

After containment, create a new key pair on a trusted system or approved key-management service. The replacement certificate must contain a different public key; renewing the old certificate with the exposed key does not solve the problem.

Key-generation decisions

  • Use a key algorithm and size supported by your CA, clients and server platform.
  • Set restrictive filesystem permissions and keep the private key out of source control, tickets, chat and build logs.
  • For automated issuance, give the ACME client only the permissions it needs and store its account key separately from the certificate private key.
  • Record the new key’s fingerprint and creation time so you can distinguish it from the exposed key during deployment checks.

Request the certificate

Request all required DNS names, including names used by APIs, alternate service domains and internal clients that genuinely rely on the same certificate. Confirm that every identifier is still authorized and that validation occurs through a trusted DNS or HTTP path. If the domain, DNS account or issuance account remains under attacker control, stop and complete that recovery instead of issuing a certificate into an unsafe environment.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Do not assume a replacement certificate has the same chain, lifetime, identifier set or compatibility characteristics as the old one. Read the CA response, inspect the issued certificate and verify the chain expected by your clients before production rollout.

5. Deploy the replacement everywhere TLS terminates

Make a deployment map before changing production. A certificate can be correct on the origin while an edge proxy, CDN, mail service or forgotten IPv6 listener continues to present the old certificate.

  1. Install the new certificate, private key and required intermediate chain according to the platform’s current instructions.
  2. Update each load balancer, reverse proxy, ingress controller, CDN distribution, service mesh gateway and origin that serves an affected name.
  3. Update non-production and disaster-recovery environments if they share the exposed key or are reachable by the affected names.
  4. Reload or restart the TLS service only as required by that platform, using a change window that preserves rollback evidence without restoring the compromised key.
  5. Remove the old certificate and private key from active configuration, deployment artifacts and accessible backups where your retention policy permits. Preserve forensic copies securely if required by incident response.

A platform-neutral deployment command cannot be given safely: paths, reload behavior and chain-file formats differ by web server, managed host and appliance. Use the current instructions for your selected CA and platform, and have a second operator review the change for high-impact services.

6. Verify the new certificate and the absence of the old one

Check every name and network path

  • Connect to each hostname with the correct Server Name Indication and inspect the leaf certificate, SAN list, issuer, validity period, public-key fingerprint and chain.
  • Test every public address, port, region and protocol path, including IPv4 and IPv6, health-check endpoints and direct-origin addresses that should not be public.
  • Test through each CDN or reverse-proxy point of presence and then directly against the origin where that path is authorized.
  • Check internal clients, mobile applications, pinned certificates and non-browser protocols such as VPN or service-to-service connections.
  • Compare the served public key with the new key fingerprint. A valid-looking certificate is not enough if it still contains the exposed key.

Look for stale deployment

Search endpoint inventories and external certificate observations for the old serial number and public-key fingerprint. A stale result may come from a cache, an overlooked listener or a node that failed to reload. Remove the old configuration and repeat the check after the platform’s documented propagation interval.

Monitor after rollout

Watch TLS handshake failures, hostname-mismatch errors, chain-building errors, client authentication failures, HTTP error rates and certificate-expiration alerts. Correlate spikes with individual regions or backends; a partial rollout often appears as intermittent failures rather than a complete outage.

What revocation does—and does not—do

Revocation tells the CA to publish that a certificate should no longer be trusted before its normal expiration. It does not erase a private-key copy, repair a compromised host, undo DNS changes, remove an attacker from an account or install the replacement on your servers.

Clients learn and enforce status differently. RFC 5280 describes certificate-revocation lists (CRLs) as signed, time-stamped lists that identify revoked certificates by serial number. RFC 9325 notes that CRLs are widely supported but can be difficult to distribute at scale. Online Certificate Status Protocol (OCSP) can provide a per-certificate response, but RFC 9325 discusses its privacy, availability and scaling limitations; many clients historically soft-failed when an OCSP responder was unreachable.

Mechanism Operational characteristic What you should assume during an incident
CRL Signed lists distributed and cached by clients; broad support but potentially large and slow to refresh. Some clients may not have downloaded the latest list.
OCSP Online status response with privacy and availability trade-offs; client behavior varies. A timeout may not cause rejection, especially in soft-fail implementations.
Local or application policy Browsers, libraries, operating systems and applications can apply different checking rules. Revocation acceptance by the CA is not proof of immediate universal blocking.

RFC 9325 states that “no complete and efficient solution exists for the problem of checking the revocation status of common public key certificates.” Plan the replacement and containment as the primary controls, with revocation as an important status signal rather than an instant kill switch.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Let’s Encrypt’s OCSP service change

Let’s Encrypt announced that it would remove OCSP URLs from certificates on May 7, 2025 and turn off its OCSP responders on August 6, 2025. Those dates describe Let’s Encrypt’s service changes, not a universal rule for every CA. Software that independently expects an OCSP responder can be affected, especially non-browser communications such as VPNs. Check the current compatibility guidance for your clients and do not infer behavior for another issuer from this announcement.

Situations that require extra care

The certificate was issued from a compromised DNS account

Revoke certificates associated with the exposed key, recover the DNS account, rotate its credentials and review all records and delegation changes. Revalidate domain control from a trusted account before issuing the replacement. If an attacker can still alter challenge records, they may be able to obtain another certificate.

The issuance account or ACME account was stolen

Revoke or rotate account credentials, inspect recent orders and authorizations, and search Certificate Transparency records for unexpected names. Coordinate with the CA if unauthorized certificates were issued. A new server key does not close an account that can continue requesting certificates.

The private key was exposed only briefly

Duration does not make exposure safe. A copied key can be retained indefinitely, so use the same revoke-and-rekey process even when logs show no confirmed misuse.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

One-click scans. No signup required.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

You cannot prove whether the key was copied

Use the conservative path: treat it as compromised, revoke affected certificates, rotate the key and investigate in parallel. Document the uncertainty and the controls used to limit further issuance or deployment.

Clients use certificate pinning or private trust stores

Coordinate the replacement with application owners before rollout. Update pins or private trust bundles through their approved release process, and test old-client behavior in a controlled environment. Public CA revocation does not automatically update an application’s embedded trust material.

Incident-completion checklist

  • Compromised hosts, DNS systems, deployment pipelines and CA accounts are contained or rebuilt.
  • All credentials and tokens that could issue, install or alter certificates are rotated.
  • Every certificate using the exposed SPKI is identified across inventories and Certificate Transparency data.
  • Each affected certificate is submitted for revocation with the issuer-appropriate reason.
  • A new key pair is generated on a trusted system and is demonstrably different from the exposed key.
  • The replacement certificate contains the required names and a chain accepted by target clients.
  • All load balancers, proxies, CDNs, origins and non-HTTP TLS services present the replacement.
  • External, internal, IPv4, IPv6 and regional endpoints have been tested with the correct SNI.
  • The old certificate and key are no longer active, and exceptions are documented for forensic retention.
  • Monitoring confirms normal handshakes and application behavior after propagation.

How to reduce the impact of the next compromise

  • Use a unique key per service or controlled certificate group instead of copying one key across unrelated hosts.
  • Automate certificate renewal while keeping issuance-account credentials and private keys in separate, access-controlled stores.
  • Maintain an inventory that records certificate serial number, SANs, public-key fingerprint, owner, endpoints and expiration.
  • Monitor Certificate Transparency for your domains and investigate unexpected issuances quickly.
  • Restrict DNS changes and ACME challenge permissions to dedicated identities with short-lived credentials where supported.
  • Test certificate replacement in staging, including chain validation, reload behavior and rollback without restoring a compromised key.
  • Keep incident runbooks specific to each CA, ACME client, web server, load balancer and CDN, and review them after provider changes.

Use a managed certificate-lifecycle or incident-response service only when your organization lacks the expertise or access needed to regain control. It is not a substitute for fixing a compromised host, DNS account or issuance account, and availability and terms vary by provider.
