Revoke a departing employee’s AI access in two tracks: disable the employee at the authoritative identity provider and terminate sessions, then separately remove or disable every AI agent, application identity, credential, membership and resource permission the employee created or controlled. A successful directory deprovisioning event is not proof that an application session, access token or agent credential has stopped working.
The procedure below is designed for IT, identity and security administrators. It covers human accounts, first-class agent identities, legacy service principals, AI workspaces, API organizations, OAuth grants and downstream cloud resources.

Why an employee departure requires more than disabling a user
AI systems commonly involve several identities at once. The employee may sign in through a corporate identity provider, while an agent uses its own identity, a service principal, an OAuth application, an API key or a secret stored in another system. Those identities can continue to operate independently unless each one is revoked.
The employee and the agent are separate targets
Disabling the employee account blocks that person from authenticating through the central provider, but it does not automatically disable an agent that the employee created. Search your inventory and audit logs for both the human identity and identities associated with the agent. In Microsoft Entra, audit fields such as agentType and the agent sign-in resource can help identify agentic sign-ins. Not every agent is represented by a first-class agent object; older implementations may appear as an application or service principal. See Microsoft’s agent identity guidance.

Account disablement and session termination are different controls
An identity provider can stop issuing new tokens while an application continues to accept a session token or an access token that was issued earlier. Application session lifetime, token type and application behavior determine how quickly access actually ends. Microsoft explicitly advises applications to revoke their own session tokens and stop accepting Microsoft Entra access tokens even when those tokens remain valid. The practical result is that central disablement must be followed by application-level revocation and testing.
Provisioning does not cover every grant
SCIM or another automated provisioning feed usually manages directory-assigned membership, not every invitation or policy entry. Direct workspace invitations, manually managed groups, unmanaged accounts, product-specific roles, direct cloud IAM bindings and credentials copied into a script can remain after a synchronization succeeds. Treat synchronization as one control in the offboarding process, not as the final check.
Offboarding runbook: revoke the person and every dependent identity
1. Establish scope, ownership and evidence
Start with the departure record and your access inventory. Record the employee’s corporate username, aliases, identity-provider accounts, privileged roles and departure time. Then identify the AI workspaces, API organizations, cloud projects, groups, applications, agent identities, traditional service principals, OAuth-connected applications and resources associated with that person.
For each agent, record its owner or sponsor, deployment location, purpose, identity type, credentials, delegated scopes, groups, roles, downstream systems and business owner. Include agents created outside the standard catalog. Search sign-in and audit logs for the employee’s identity, application identifiers and agent indicators; an absence from a catalog is not evidence that an agent does not exist.
Make the inventory your evidence checklist. For every item, note the administrator responsible, the revocation action, the time performed and the verification result. This prevents a later reviewer from confusing an intended exception with an overlooked permission.
2. Disable the human account and terminate sessions
- Disable the employee at the authoritative identity provider. Block new sign-ins and remove or suspend privileged directory roles according to your emergency-offboarding policy.
- Revoke refresh tokens and workforce sessions. Use the provider’s session-revocation control in addition to disabling the account. Microsoft documents disabling the user and revoking the sign-in session in its emergency access guidance. Google Cloud separately recommends workforce-session revocation when active sessions must end immediately; follow Google Cloud’s access-revocation procedure.
- Handle hybrid identity correctly. If the account is synchronized from on-premises Active Directory, follow the hybrid procedure and confirm the cloud object receives the disabled state. A cloud-only action may be overwritten or may leave the authoritative account active.
- Capture the result. Save the provider audit event and timestamp. The event proves that the central action occurred; it does not prove that every application has rejected existing tokens.
Microsoft notes that an access token can remain usable until it expires and that an application-issued session token is controlled by the application. Therefore, do not promise an exact universal cutoff time. The effective window depends on token and session lifetimes, synchronization delay and whether each application checks revocation.

3. Remove the person from AI products and identity assignments
Remove the employee from identity-provider application assignments, provisioning groups and privileged roles. Wait for the next successful synchronization, then verify that the intended product access was removed. If your platform offers a “deprovision now” or equivalent action, record its completion event.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Perform a separate product-side review for:
- Direct invitations to workspaces, projects or organizations.
- Manually managed workspace groups and product-specific administrator roles.
- Unmanaged or automatically created accounts that are not under SCIM control.
- API organization membership, role assignments and personal API credentials.
- Connections to notebooks, repositories, data stores, automation tools or cloud projects.
For OpenAI deployments, check the correct tenant, ChatGPT workspace and API organization because these have distinct scopes. SCIM can manage directory membership in supported scopes, while API organization members and roles remain managed in the API Platform. Automatic account creation is separate from SCIM, and a user created that way may not be SCIM-managed. Remove manually granted workspace access directly. The SCIM provisioning and management documentation describes a test-offboarding workflow and these limits.
4. Revoke the agent’s own identity, permissions and credentials
Find the specific agent or blueprint and disable it when the platform supports individual disablement. Object-scoped disablement is narrower than a policy that blocks an entire category of agents, so use the narrow control for a single departure whenever it is sufficient.
Then inspect every authorization layer attached to that agent:
- Application permissions and delegated grants.
- Group memberships, directory roles and resource roles.
- OAuth consent and refresh tokens.
- API keys, client secrets, certificates, signing keys and workload credentials.
- Webhooks, scheduled jobs, connectors and stored integration credentials.
- Downstream permissions in cloud projects, repositories, databases, ticketing systems and file stores.
Disable or rotate credentials rather than merely deleting a display name. If a secret could have been copied, assume it is exposed and replace it wherever it is accepted. Reassign the agent to an approved owner only after its permissions and credentials have been reviewed.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsLegacy agents may be represented by an application registration or service principal rather than an agent object. Use the inventory and controls for that identity type. Microsoft’s agent identity disablement guidance explains that conditional access can block token issuance for broader categories, but has wider operational impact and does not prevent agent creation. Test a broad policy in report-only mode before enforcement.

5. Clean up connected resources and direct grants
Review each application’s own session controls and access policy. Remove direct user entries from cloud IAM policies and resources that are not covered by federation or automated provisioning. Google Cloud recommends Policy Analyzer to identify effective access and notes that manually granted external identities may need to be removed from individual projects and resources.
Check the former employee’s connected-app page and the agent’s integration records for user-level OAuth grants. Revoke grants that are no longer needed. Rotate or revoke credentials held by the agent, especially when the employee could have viewed, exported or copied them. Also inspect automation platforms and scripts for secrets stored outside the central secret manager.
Use the narrowest change that removes the departed person’s access. A broad deny policy may stop many legitimate agents and users, while a direct binding removal may miss an inherited group permission. Record both the control selected and its expected blast radius.

Verification is a separate phase, not an assumption based on a green provisioning job. Check each result below and retain the evidence and timestamp:
- The employee account is disabled and cannot obtain new identity-provider tokens.
- Refresh tokens and workforce sessions are revoked where the provider supports it.
- Application sessions are terminated or rejected according to the application’s own controls.
- Identity-provider synchronization completed and removed assigned product access.
- The AI workspace, API organization, invitations, manual groups and product roles no longer include the employee.
- Agent identities and legacy service principals are disabled, reassigned or otherwise restricted.
- OAuth grants, secrets, certificates, API keys and downstream resource bindings are revoked or rotated.
- Sign-in and audit logs show no continuing activity by the former employee or affected agent.
Where policy permits, perform a controlled access test using the disabled account or a test identity with equivalent permissions. Confirm that the application rejects the request rather than simply redirecting to a login page. For an agent, review recent sign-ins, token issuance and job execution records after the revocation time.

| Control | Primary target | What it stops | What may remain | Operational impact |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Disable identity-provider account | One employee | New authentication through the authoritative provider | Existing application sessions, unexpired access tokens, independent credentials and agent identities | Low outside the user’s access; immediate loss of corporate sign-in |
| Revoke refresh tokens or workforce sessions | One employee’s provider sessions | Continuation through supported workforce-session mechanisms | Application-issued sessions and tokens an application does not check | Usually targeted; active work may be interrupted |
| Remove assignments and SCIM-managed membership | Directory-linked applications and workspaces | Provisioned membership after synchronization | Direct invitations, unmanaged accounts, manual roles and direct resource policies | Targeted, with delay until synchronization completes |
| Disable one agent or blueprint | A specific agent identity | Agent operation through that object | Separate app identities, copied secrets, downstream grants and other agents | Narrow when object-scoped |
| Conditional Access or broad deny policy | A category of users, apps or agents | Token issuance for the defined condition | Resources that do not honor the policy and credentials outside the provider | Potentially high; test in report-only mode first |
| Rotate or revoke credentials | Keys, secrets, certificates and API tokens | Use of the affected credential | Other credentials and permissions granted through another path | Can break integrations until replacement credentials are deployed |
Use central disablement first for speed, then narrow product, agent and resource actions for coverage. Escalate to a broad policy when the scope of exposure is uncertain or a category of agents must be stopped, accepting the larger blast radius.

Common failure modes and how to correct them
“The directory says deprovisioned, so we are finished.”
A successful synchronization only confirms that the provisioning system processed its assignments. Check direct invitations, unmanaged accounts, manually granted roles and product-specific administrator settings. If the product still shows access, remove the direct grant instead of repeatedly deleting the central group membership.
“Disabling the user stopped the agent.”
An agent with its own service principal, API key or secret can continue after the human account is disabled. Locate the agent’s identity and inspect its sign-ins, permissions and credentials. Disable the object and revoke or rotate every independent credential.
“Revoking provider sessions ended every session.”
Applications can issue and validate their own session cookies or tokens. Use the application’s session-revocation control and confirm that it rejects the former employee’s existing session. Microsoft’s emergency guidance specifically places responsibility on applications to revoke their own session tokens and stop accepting still-valid provider access tokens.
“A broad deny rule is safer than investigation.”
A broad rule may also block legitimate employees, integrations and agents, and it does not remove an agent’s ability to be created. If you need category-wide blocking, test the policy in report-only mode, examine the impact, then enforce it with an owner and rollback plan.

Best Value
Build a repeatable departure control
After the immediate revocation, improve the process so the next departure is faster and more complete. Require every agent to have an accountable owner, a documented identity type, an inventory entry, an expiration or review date and a list of downstream systems. Prefer workload identities and centrally managed secrets over personal API keys. Alert on agent creation, ownership changes, new high-risk grants and sign-ins after an owner’s account is disabled.
Test the offboarding workflow periodically with a nonproduction account. Measure whether the identity-provider action, synchronization, application-session termination, agent disablement and credential rotation produce visible audit events. Keep exceptions explicit: record what remains active, why it remains active, who approved it and when it will be reviewed.
The OpenID Foundation’s October 2025 report, Identity Management for Agentic AI, describes the broader lifecycle problem: agent identity needs ownership, governance and retirement controls rather than only a human account switch. Use that perspective when designing inventories and approval workflows, while applying the concrete controls exposed by each provider.
Microsoft’s warning about application responsibility
“Ensure applications revoke their own session tokens and stop accepting Microsoft Entra access tokens even if they’re still valid.”
This sentence appears in Microsoft’s Revoke user access in an emergency in Microsoft Entra ID documentation and captures the central operational limit: identity-provider revocation is necessary, but applications and agents must enforce revocation at their own boundaries.
