What’s actually slowing this PC down?

There is no universal off switch for AI agents. To shut one down safely, identify the platform, the identity or account it uses, and any active or scheduled work. Then disable or suspend the agent, disconnect its connected accounts, revoke permissions on its identity, cancel runs and triggers, and verify at every service it can access. Disabling an agent alone may leave owner-run jobs, workflow executions, credentials, or alternate service accounts active.
What you must stop: access, identity, and execution
An AI agent can continue to affect systems through several independent layers. Treat each layer as a separate control rather than assuming one button handles everything.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
- Agent object: The published agent, blueprint, session, or deployment that users can invoke.
- Authentication identity: An Entra agent identity, Google Cloud service account, OAuth-connected user account, or another principal that obtains tokens.
- Permissions and connections: IAM roles, app assignments, OAuth grants, API keys, MCP servers, and stored secrets.
- Execution: Current runs, queued workflows, scheduled jobs, webhooks, event triggers, and owner-created tasks.
Stopping one layer does not reliably stop the others. For example, changing an app permission in ChatGPT does not disconnect the provider account, and interrupting an Anthropic Managed Agents session does not end an open workflow run.

Choose the narrowest control that contains the problem
Use the smallest scope that stops the unwanted behavior. A single connection or identity is safer than a tenant-wide block when only one agent is affected. Broader controls are appropriate when an identity is compromised or you cannot determine which agent is acting, but assess collateral effects first.

| Control | Typical scope | What it changes | Does it stop work already running? | Reversibility and risk |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Disconnect an account | One user-to-provider connection | Removes future access through that connection | Not guaranteed; inspect runs and schedules separately | Usually reversible by reconnecting |
| Disable or suspend an agent | One agent or shared publication | Prevents or limits normal invocation | Platform-specific; scheduled and owner-run jobs can differ | Usually reversible, except deletion |
| Disable an identity or blueprint | One agent identity or its template | Blocks authentication and token issuance for that scope | Does not prove that an already executing workflow has ended | Reversible, but dependent agents may fail |
| Conditional Access or equivalent identity block | Users, agent identities, or an entire tenant | Blocks authentication across a defined policy scope | Stops new authentication; investigate existing executions | High collateral impact; test in report-only mode where available |
| Remove IAM roles or app assignments | A principal and a resource | Removes a specific capability | Existing tokens or jobs may persist until they expire or are cancelled | Reversible by restoring the exact role |
| Revoke or rotate credentials | API keys, secrets, refresh tokens, or shared credentials | Invalidates a credential independent of agent settings | Usually blocks subsequent calls using that credential | Recovery requires issuing and distributing a replacement |
| Delete | Agent or session resource | Removes the object permanently where supported | Not a substitute for cancelling external workflows | May be unrecoverable and may not delete related resources |
Emergency shutdown sequence
Follow this order when an agent is acting unexpectedly or a credential may be exposed. Preserve logs before deleting anything.
- Contain authentication. Use the platform’s individual disable, suspend, or identity-block control. If you cannot identify the exact agent and the identity is suspected to be compromised, apply the narrowest available identity-provider block while investigating.
- Stop work in motion. Cancel queued and running jobs, workflow executions, scheduled tasks, webhooks, and event triggers. Check both owner-created and shared-user schedules; they may have different cancellation behavior.
- Disconnect user and provider accounts. Remove each OAuth connection or app assignment that lets the agent reach an external service. A changed permission setting is not proof that an existing provider grant was revoked.
- Remove permissions from every principal. Review service accounts, agent identities, classic applications, service principals, and any secondary account used by tools or integrations. Remove only the roles and assignments that are no longer required.
- Revoke credentials separately. Inventory API keys, refresh tokens, vault entries, and shared secrets. Rotate or revoke them when the agent could have copied or used them; IAM changes alone do not invalidate an unrelated key.
- Verify and monitor. Confirm that authentication fails, tokens are no longer issued, scheduled activity stops, and audit or sign-in logs show no alternate principal continuing the work. Keep evidence until the incident is understood.
Do not delete an agent as your first action if you still need its run history, configuration, or audit trail. Deletion can remove the easiest path to determining what happened.
ChatGPT connected apps and workspace controls
Disconnect an individual app account
In ChatGPT, changing an app’s permission changes how an available app may be used. It does not disconnect the app or revoke access that was already granted to the provider account.
- Open Settings.
- Choose Apps or Plugins, depending on the surface shown for your account.
- Select the connected app.
- Choose Disconnect and confirm.
The provider may also expose its own unlink or revoke control. Use that control as well when it exists, then check the provider’s active sessions, OAuth grants, and audit history.
Apply workspace restrictions
Workspace administrators can control whether apps are available. Enterprise and Edu administrators can configure role-based access where supported, and workspace owners can disable agent mode for Enterprise and Edu workspaces and control which apps it may use. These are availability controls, not a universal cancellation mechanism for every run already in progress.
Direct app actions and synced data can follow different paths. A restriction on direct actions may not remove data that was already synchronized into a workspace. Identify whether the agent is using a live app action, a stored connection, or synced data before deciding that the access path is closed.

Microsoft Entra Agent ID
Disable one identity or its blueprint
Microsoft distinguishes newer agent identities from older agents represented as ordinary applications or service principals. For an Agent ID resource, an administrator can disable the individual identity or its blueprint from Entra ID > Agents. Agents represented by classic applications or service principals follow the normal application and service-principal governance path instead.
Disabling an identity blocks its normal access and token issuance. Disabling a blueprint affects agents created from that blueprint, so inspect dependencies before selecting it. Re-enabling a disabled identity restores access and token issuance; it does not undo permission changes or credential rotations you made elsewhere.
Use Conditional Access only when the scope is justified
Conditional Access can block agent-identity authentication, authentication performed with users’ accounts, or users signing in to agents. Microsoft Entra ID P1 is required to apply these policies. Microsoft recommends testing a policy in Report-only mode before enforcement so you can see which agents, users, and product experiences would be affected.
Tenant-wide disablement can cause agents to fail and can degrade Microsoft product experiences that depend on them. Use an individual identity or blueprint control when it contains the incident; reserve a broad policy for a broad, evidenced problem.
Gemini Enterprise Business edition
Gemini Enterprise gives Disable, Suspend, and Delete different meanings for shared agents. Select the action based on who must be stopped and whether the agent must remain recoverable.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →| Action | Gallery visibility | Scheduled jobs | Recovery |
|---|---|---|---|
| Disable | Shared agent is hidden from the Agent Gallery | Active scheduled jobs for users with shared access are cancelled; the owner can still run those jobs | Can be re-enabled |
| Suspend | Agent remains visible with a deactivation message | Active scheduled jobs are cancelled for both the owner and shared users | Designed for temporary deactivation |
| Delete | Agent is removed | Do not rely on deletion to clean up external workflows | Permanent and unrecoverable |
If the goal is to stop the owner as well as shared users, Suspend has the broader scheduled-job effect. If you only need to remove the shared listing while allowing the owner’s work to continue, Disable has the narrower effect.

Google-made agents cannot be disabled, suspended, or deleted. A private Agent Designer agent can be deleted, but it does not expose the same disable, suspend, or permission-management options as a shared agent. For those cases, control the underlying account, credentials, schedules, or service that invokes the agent.
Google Cloud deployed agents
Find every principal used by the deployment
Start with the deployment configuration and audit logs to identify its service account or other agent identity. One deployment can involve more than one principal: a runtime service account, a build or deployment account, and separate accounts used by tools or scheduled triggers. Removing a role from only one of them may leave the agent operational.
Remove IAM roles
For a one-off revocation, remove the unnecessary binding in the IAM console or with gcloud. The documented command pattern is:
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
gcloud projects remove-iam-policy-binding PROJECT_ID --member=PRINCIPAL --role=ROLE_NAME
Replace PROJECT_ID, PRINCIPAL, and ROLE_NAME with the exact project, identity, and binding you verified. Removing a broad role can break unrelated workloads, so compare the binding with the agent’s required actions before executing it.
For repeatable or multi-environment changes, manage IAM with Terraform rather than custom Python. Google’s guidance recommends the console or gcloud for one-off role revocation and Terraform for programmatic IAM management.
Handle keys and secrets as separate resources
API keys and Secret Manager secrets are not automatically invalidated when an IAM role is removed. Inventory keys, secret versions, refresh tokens, and environment variables that the agent could read. Revoke or rotate exposed credentials, then update or disable the scheduler and deployment that might still supply a replacement credential.

Anthropic Managed Agents
Stop the run before changing a session
Tools and MCP servers for a Managed Agents session can be updated only while the session is idle. An interrupt can move a running session toward idle, but an interrupt does not end an open workflow run.
Before updating, archiving, or deleting a session:
- Send a user message asking the agent to stop its runs, when the session remains responsive.
- Check the workflow status and wait until every run has ended, or cancel the workflow through its own control plane.
- Only then change tools or MCP servers, archive the session, or delete it.
Deleting a session does not delete independent resources such as agents, skills, environments, memory stores, or vaults. Review and clean those resources separately if they contain credentials or can launch new work.
Verification: prove that the agent is actually stopped
A shutdown is complete only when both access and execution checks pass.
- Authentication: Attempt a controlled sign-in or token request and confirm that the disabled identity, connection, or policy rejects it. Do not test with production data.
- Authorization: Inspect IAM bindings, app assignments, OAuth grants, MCP tools, and secret access for every principal identified during containment.
- Execution: Confirm that current runs are cancelled or ended, queues are empty, schedules are disabled, and webhooks or event subscriptions no longer invoke the agent.
- Logs: Review sign-in, audit, workflow, and cloud activity logs for attempts after the shutdown time. A different service account or user account is evidence that the execution path was not fully contained.
- Persistence: Check deployment replicas, automation platforms, cron-like schedulers, and external orchestrators that may recreate the agent or issue a new token.
- Evidence: Export relevant run IDs, timestamps, actor identities, configuration, and audit records before deleting sessions or agents.
Common shutdown mistakes and the corrective action
“I changed the permission, so access is revoked.”
A permission setting may govern how an app can be called without removing an existing provider grant. Disconnect the account and revoke the provider-side grant, then verify token use in logs.
“The agent is disabled, so its scheduled jobs are gone.”
Scheduled-job behavior differs by platform and ownership. Inspect owner, shared-user, and external schedules individually; Gemini Enterprise’s Disable and Suspend actions, for example, cancel different sets of jobs.
“Interrupt means the workflow ended.”
In Managed Agents, an interrupt can make a session idle while an open workflow run continues. Wait for the run to end or stop it through the workflow control before modifying or deleting the session.
Best Value
“Removing one IAM role invalidates every credential.”
API keys, secrets, refresh tokens, and another service account can remain usable. Rotate or revoke each credential independently and inspect all principals in the deployment.
“A tenant-wide block is the safest first move.”
Broad identity controls can disrupt legitimate agents and dependent product features. Start with the narrowest identity or blueprint control, use report-only testing for Conditional Access, and widen the scope only when evidence supports it.
“Deleting the agent removes everything it created.”
Sessions, skills, environments, memory stores, vaults, schedules, and cloud resources can be independent objects. Record dependencies first, then remove each resource through its own control plane.
Restore an agent deliberately
Re-enable an agent only after documenting the identity it uses, the resources it can reach, the schedules that can invoke it, and the credentials that remain valid. Restore permissions in the smallest increments, test with a non-production account, and watch audit logs during the first scheduled run. If a Conditional Access policy or identity disablement was used, remove or narrow that control only after the agent’s integrations and run history are understood.
Menu names, roles, licensing requirements, and behavior can change. The platform procedures above reflect official documentation reviewed on 13 October 2026 and apply to the named surfaces; third-party orchestration frameworks, custom deployments, and agents represented as ordinary applications may require different controls.
