How to Revoke an AI Agent’s Access and Recover Affected Accounts

If an AI agent may have acted through your accounts without permission, stop its ability to run, then separately revoke the keys, tokens, app grants, passwords, and sessions it could use. Stopping the agent does not necessarily invalidate access already issued by a provider. After revocation, recover each affected account through its service’s official process and review activity for changes you did not make.

1. Contain the agent without assuming access is revoked

Pause or disable the agent and, if safe, the host environment it runs on. Stop scheduled jobs and tool connections that could continue making changes. NIST notes that AI agents can plan and take actions affecting real-world systems, so connected services belong in the incident response boundary (NIST CAISI notice, January 12, 2026).

This stops or limits new activity from that runtime; it is not proof that keys, tokens, browser sessions, or account grants already issued elsewhere have been invalidated. Revoke those separately at the relevant services.

2. Identify every access path the agent could use

Make a list of accounts and services the agent could reach, including API providers, identity providers, cloud workloads, connected apps, and accounts accessed through a shared password or logged-in browser. For each one, identify the access type:

  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The Security Key C NFC is the essential physical passkey for protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts.
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single Security Key C NFC secures 100 of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more.
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your Security Key C NFC via USB-C and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC) to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required.
  • TRUSTED PASSKEY TECHNOLOGY: Uses the latest passkey standards (FIDO2/WebAuthn & FIDO U2F) but does not support One-Time Passwords. For complex needs, check out the YubiKey 5 Series.
  • BUILT TO LAST: Made from tough, waterproof, and crush-resistant materials. Manufactured in Sweden and programmed in the USA with the highest security standards.
  • API key: a service-issued secret used to authenticate API requests.
  • Token or delegated grant: OAuth or another token or permission authorizing access to a service.
  • Browser session: an already-authenticated session in a browser or app.
  • Password or authenticator: sign-in credentials the agent could have received or used.
  • Workload identity: credentials or identity assigned to the agent’s runtime or cloud workload.

Revoke access at the service that issued or accepts it. NIST’s IR 8587 provides implementation guidance on token and key management, lifecycle controls, and monitoring across SSO, federation, APIs, and workloads. There is no universal control panel or single global “revoke agent” action.

3. Revoke credentials, grants, and sessions

Work through the affected services one at a time. Use each provider’s own security or developer console and confirm the action there; one provider’s logout or key deletion does not revoke access at another provider.

Yubico - YubiKey 5 NFC - Multi-Factor authentication (MFA) Security Key and passkey, Connect via USB-A or NFC, FIDO Certified - Protect Your Online Accounts
  • POWERFUL SECURITY KEY: The YubiKey 5 NFC is the most versatile physical passkey, protecting your digital life from phishing attacks. It ensures only you can access your accounts
  • WORKS WITH 1000+ ACCOUNTS: Compatible with popular accounts like Google, Microsoft, and Apple. A single YubiKey 5 NFC secures 100+ of your favorite accounts, including email, password managers, and more
  • FAST & CONVENIENT LOGIN: Plug in your YubiKey 5 NFC via USB and tap it, or tap it against your phone (NFC), to authenticate. No batteries, no internet connection, and no extra fees required
  • MOST SECURE PASSKEY: Supports FIDO2/WebAuthn, FIDO U2F, Yubico OTP, OATH-TOTP/HOTP, Smart card (PIV), and OpenPGP. That means it’s versatile, working almost anywhere you need it
  • PRIMARY & SPARE KEYS: Just like having a spare house key, we recommend buying two YubiKeys - one for daily use and one as a spare. That way you’ll never get locked out of your accounts
  1. Delete or revoke compromised API keys and tokens.
  2. Remove delegated app permissions or grants if the provider offers that control.
  3. Log out active sessions or use the provider’s all-devices logout option.
  4. Change passwords that were exposed, shared with the agent, or reused on an affected account.

For an OpenAI API key, OpenAI instructs users to delete the affected key through the API key dashboard. Its account-security guidance also recommends logging out all sessions and changing a password if it may have been exposed (OpenAI account-security guidance).

4. Recover each affected account

Use the official recovery process for each service; identity checks, recovery timing, and support options vary. If an authenticator may be compromised, NIST SP 800-63B says the credential service provider should promptly suspend, invalidate, or destroy the compromised authenticator after detecting compromise (NIST SP 800-63B). Regain control through the provider’s supported process, then enroll replacement authenticators as appropriate.

For OpenAI, the documented response includes changing an exposed password, logging out active sessions, deleting affected API keys, reviewing API usage and security history, retaining useful incident details, and contacting support. OpenAI says logging out all devices may take up to 30 minutes to take effect on other ChatGPT sessions. That timing applies to OpenAI’s sessions, not to other providers.

5. Review activity and contact the provider

Look for unfamiliar activity in account security history, API usage, account changes, and connected-app records. Record dates, affected accounts, actions the agent may have taken, and key identifiers where safely available. Do not include passwords, full API keys, or other secrets in incident notes or public reports.

OpenAI advises users to review unexpected API usage and security history, retain details that may assist recovery, and contact support if an account or API key may be compromised. Its guidance says: “If you think an account or API key has been compromised, go to Respond to a suspected compromise and contact OpenAI Support right away” (OpenAI account-security guidance).

6. Restore access cautiously

Once the incident is contained and reviewed, issue replacement credentials only for integrations that still need access. Prefer arrangements whose issuance, revocation, and monitoring can be managed for the service and environment involved. NIST IR 8587 discusses key management, token verification, lifecycle controls, and continuous monitoring; the specific implementation depends on each provider and stack.

Confirm that revoked credentials no longer work where the provider offers a way to check, and watch for further unexpected activity. A hardware security key can strengthen sign-in where supported, but it does not revoke API keys, OAuth grants, workload tokens, or active sessions. OpenAI’s security material references a YubiKey bundle for eligible users; availability and compatibility should be checked with the provider (OpenAI hardware-key guidance).
