How to Revoke a Crypto Trading Bot’s API Access After a Security Concern

By Freedom251 Team · · 11 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Revoke the suspected API key in the cryptocurrency exchange’s own API-management settings immediately. Do not rely on disconnecting the bot, uninstalling an integration, or deleting a connection inside the bot service. Those actions may remove the software’s saved copy while leaving the exchange-issued credential active. Confirm that the key is disabled or deleted at the exchange.

After revocation, inspect recent orders, trades, balances, withdrawals, deposits, and other account activity. If anything is unfamiliar, contact the exchange through its official support or account-security channel, secure the related accounts, and preserve evidence before creating a replacement key.

What an exchange API key can let a trading bot do

An API key is a credential that lets an external application identify itself to an exchange. The key’s permissions determine what the application can read or change. A bot may be able to retrieve account information, read market or user data, place orders, modify or cancel orders, or perform other actions allowed by the exchange and the key’s scope.

The danger is not limited to a bot that is actively trading. A copied key can remain usable until it expires, is disabled, or is deleted. An attacker who obtains the key and secret may be able to use the exchange’s API directly, subject to the permissions you granted. Kraken explains that third-party services can access account information or conduct trades depending on the permissions attached to the key. Binance similarly separates trading and user-data permissions in its API model.

Permission names differ by exchange and product. “Trading” does not necessarily mean “withdrawal,” and some services make value-transfer access a separate, more powerful permission. Coinbase’s permission model distinguishes View, Transfer, Trade, and Manage; its documentation says Transfer can move value, including deposits and withdrawals, and can bypass two-factor authentication for those API operations. Treat every permission as an independent capability rather than assuming that a trading key has one universal level of access.

Deleting a bot connection is not the same as revoking the key

Removing an exchange from a bot dashboard can stop that particular bot from using the credential, but it does not prove that the exchange has invalidated the key. The key may still exist, may still be stored elsewhere, or may have been copied before you disconnected it. The authoritative action is revocation or deletion in the exchange account that issued the credential.

Emergency procedure: revoke the key first

Use this sequence when you suspect that a bot key, secret, bot account, or connected service has been exposed. Menu labels change, so use the current API or security documentation for your exchange rather than assuming another exchange’s path applies.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Sign in to the exchange directly. Type the exchange’s known official web address yourself or open its official app. Do not use a support link sent by email, direct message, or a pop-up. If you are already signed in through a suspicious browser session, open a new trusted session and verify the domain before entering credentials.
  2. Open API-management settings. Look under account settings, security, developer settings, API, API Management, or a similar section. You may need to complete an account-security challenge before the list of keys appears.
  3. Identify the suspected credential. Compare the key name, creation date, permissions, IP restrictions, and last-used information, if shown, with the bot or service you connected. If you cannot confidently identify one key, treat every unfamiliar or unnecessary key as suspect.
  4. Revoke or delete the key. Use the exchange’s Disable, Revoke, Delete, or equivalent control, then complete any confirmation step. The action must occur at the exchange. Coinbase’s rotation guidance starts by revoking or deleting the existing key and describes revocation as immediately disabling it.
  5. Handle a broader concern as a broader incident. If you saw unusual account activity, do not stop after one key. Review the entire API-key list and remove all keys you do not recognize or no longer need. Binance’s official API documentation says: “If you notice unusual activity on your account, immediately revoke all the keys and contact Binance support.”
  6. Confirm the result. Refresh the API page, sign out and back in if necessary, and verify that the key is marked revoked, disabled, or absent. If the exchange provides a key identifier, record it with the time of revocation. Do not assume that a bot’s “disconnected” status is confirmation.
  7. Review account activity. Check recent orders, fills, cancellations, open orders, deposits, withdrawals, balance changes, API access history, login history, and security notifications where the exchange provides them. Record timestamps, transaction IDs, order IDs, destination addresses, device details, and IP information before they disappear from the interface.
  8. Contact official support or account security for anything you do not recognize. Use the exchange’s in-account support path or the official security contact listed in its documentation. Kraken directs users who suspect compromise or see unrecognized activity to contact its Account Security team immediately; Binance directs users with unusual activity to contact Binance support.

If you cannot access the exchange account

Use the exchange’s official account-recovery or security process, not a search-advertisement link or an unsolicited “support” message. Tell the exchange that an API credential may be compromised and provide the key identifier, account email, approximate discovery time, and any suspicious order or transfer IDs. If the exchange offers an emergency account lock, follow its instructions. Do not keep experimenting with a suspected login or send additional secrets to anyone claiming to be support.

What to check after revocation

Revoking a key prevents future API calls made with that credential, but it is not a universal undo button. It does not automatically reverse completed trades, recover transferred funds, cancel every outstanding order, or secure a compromised exchange login. Those outcomes require account-specific checks and the exchange’s incident process.

Orders and trades

  • Review both completed trades and open orders. A bot may have placed a limit order that remains open after the key is revoked.
  • Cancel orders you did not authorize using the exchange interface, if it is safe to do so and the exchange’s incident guidance allows it.
  • Save order IDs, execution times, symbols, quantities, prices, and fees for support.

Balances and transfers

  • Compare current balances with a trusted prior statement or export.
  • Check deposits, withdrawals, address-book changes, and destination addresses.
  • Do not assume that a key with trading permission could not affect value. Permission systems differ, and a separate transfer or withdrawal capability may have been granted accidentally.

Account and security events

  • Review new logins, active sessions, password changes, two-factor authentication changes, and recovery-method changes.
  • Look for unfamiliar devices, locations, API key creations, IP allow-list edits, or email notifications.
  • Keep screenshots or exports with their timestamps. Do not edit the originals.

Exchange-specific differences

Binance, Kraken, and Coinbase document different permission names and workflows. The table is a decision aid, not a promise that every product or interface uses these exact labels.

Exchange What its documentation establishes Practical response to a concern
Binance API keys and secrets are sensitive. Permission scopes can separate trading (TRADE) from user-data access, and a key cannot trade by default. Open the exchange’s API-key controls, revoke all keys when unusual activity is detected, then contact Binance support. Verify the current product’s labels and controls.
Kraken Depending on permissions, a bot may access account information or conduct trades. Kraken recommends secure storage, two-factor authentication where available, minimal permissions, and deleting obsolete keys. Delete the exposed or unnecessary key in the API settings. For unrecognized activity or suspected compromise, contact Kraken’s Account Security team immediately.
Coinbase Exchange Its rotation process begins by revoking or deleting the old key, then creating a replacement and updating connected applications. Creation permissions include View, Transfer, Trade, and Manage; Transfer can move value, including deposits and withdrawals, and bypasses 2FA. Revoke the old key first, confirm it is disabled, then create a replacement only after reviewing the exposure and selecting the minimum permissions required.

Binance: treat unusual activity as a full-key incident

Binance’s official Spot REST API documentation treats keys and secrets as sensitive and advises immediate revocation of all keys after unusual activity, followed by contact with support. Its permission model illustrates why least privilege matters: trading and user-data access can be separated, and trading is not enabled by default. Do not infer that every Binance product has the same dashboard or scopes; use the controls and documentation for the specific account and API product you use.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Kraken: use the Account Security route for suspected compromise

Kraken’s guidance covers both the credential and the surrounding service. It recommends storing keys securely, enabling key two-factor authentication where available, protecting the third-party service account with two-factor authentication, using minimal permissions, and deleting keys that are no longer relevant. Its API information guidance says to contact Account Security immediately when activity is unrecognized or compromise is suspected.

Coinbase Exchange: revoke before rotation

Coinbase’s documented order is deliberate: revoke or delete the old key, create a replacement with only the needed permissions, and update connected applications. A key with Transfer permission has materially greater consequences than a key limited to viewing data or trading, so read each permission description before saving a new credential.

Choose replacement permissions using least privilege

Do not create a replacement key until you understand how the original was exposed. A new key copied into the same insecure integration, shared in a chat, committed to source control, or stored in an unprotected file can be compromised again.

Bot requirement Permissions to consider Permissions to avoid unless essential
Read prices, balances, or order status Read or query access only. Order placement, order modification, cancellation, transfers, and withdrawals.
Place and manage orders Trading plus the exchange’s documented order-modification and cancellation scopes. Transfer or withdrawal access.
Cancel or close existing orders Cancel/Close Orders, and query access if the bot must identify orders first. Withdraw Funds or any value-transfer scope.
Move funds Only the narrowly defined transfer permission required by the application, after a separate risk review. Broad management access or unrestricted withdrawal access.

Kraken gives a concrete example for an order-placing bot: it would need Modify Orders and Cancel/Close Orders, might need query access, and would almost certainly not need Withdraw Funds. Use the same reasoning on other exchanges even though the labels differ.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Apply additional controls where available

  • Use IP allow-lists when the bot runs from a stable, trusted network and the exchange supports them.
  • Enable API-key two-factor authentication or an equivalent approval control when offered.
  • Set an expiration date or rotation schedule if the exchange supports it.
  • Keep the key and secret in a dedicated secrets store or protected environment variable, not in source code, screenshots, tickets, or shared documents.
  • Give the bot account its own login and two-factor authentication where the service supports separate users.

Investigate how the credential was exposed

Revocation stops the immediate credential, but finding the exposure path determines whether another secret or account is at risk. Work backward from the last known safe use.

  1. List every place the key or secret was entered: bot dashboards, desktop applications, scripts, cloud hosts, containers, notebooks, support tickets, chats, and shared drives.
  2. Search private repositories, build logs, shell history, backups, screenshots, and configuration files for the key identifier or secret. Remove exposed copies, but preserve an evidence copy for incident handling where appropriate.
  3. Review the bot provider’s account sessions, login history, team members, webhooks, connected applications, and billing or plan changes.
  4. Change the bot-service password and enable two-factor authentication. If the same password was reused on the exchange or email account, change it there as well.
  5. Check the machine or server that ran the bot for malware, unauthorized users, unexpected processes, and recently installed packages. If you cannot establish trust, move the replacement bot to a clean environment.

Do not publish the old key, secret, screenshots containing credentials, or detailed destination information in a public incident report. Share sensitive evidence only through the exchange’s verified support process.

Reconnect a bot safely

Reconnect only after the exchange account, bot account, storage location, and execution environment are secured. A replacement key should be treated as a new credential, not as an extension of the old one.

  1. Read the exchange’s current API-creation instructions for the exact product you use.
  2. Create a new key with the minimum permissions identified in your bot’s documented requirements.
  3. Do not grant transfer or withdrawal access merely because the bot can place trades.
  4. Apply IP restrictions, expiration, and key-level two-factor authentication if available.
  5. Enter the replacement credential through the bot’s protected configuration mechanism. Avoid sending it through chat or email.
  6. Run a read-only or low-risk connectivity test first. Confirm that the bot can perform only the intended actions.
  7. Monitor orders, balances, API calls, and login alerts closely after reconnecting.
  8. Delete the old credential from every application and storage location, and keep the exchange’s key list limited to active, documented integrations.

Correction: revoke or delete it in the exchange’s API-management settings, then verify its status.

Revoking one key while ignoring the rest

Why it fails: an attacker may be using another key, or the incident may involve the entire account.

Correction: inventory every key. When unusual activity is present, follow Binance’s stated approach of revoking all keys and contacting support.

Assuming revocation cancels existing orders

Why it fails: revocation blocks future API requests but does not establish what happened to orders already submitted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: inspect open and completed orders directly and follow the exchange’s incident instructions.

Replacing the key before fixing the exposure

Why it fails: the new credential can be copied through the same compromised bot account, server, file, or password.

Correction: secure the exchange, bot service, email, storage, and execution environment before reconnecting.

Granting every permission “temporarily”

Why it fails: temporary broad permissions can be abused immediately and are often never removed.

Free tools Windows power users keep installed

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Correction: map each bot function to one permission and exclude transfer, withdrawal, and management scopes unless the function genuinely requires them.

Using an unofficial support channel

Why it fails: attackers commonly impersonate exchange support and request passwords, codes, or secrets.

Correction: start from the exchange’s known official website or app and use its in-account security or support workflow.

When to escalate immediately

Contact the exchange’s security team without delay if you see an unknown withdrawal, transfer, order, login, API key, password change, two-factor-authentication change, or recovery-method change. Escalate even if the amount appears small; an unfamiliar action demonstrates that the account or credential may be under someone else’s control.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Provide a concise timeline: when the bot last behaved normally, when the concern began, when the key was revoked, which activity is unknown, and which devices or services were involved. Include IDs and timestamps, but never include an active secret. The exchange can tell you which actions are reversible, whether orders remain open, and what additional account restrictions or recovery steps are required.
