To revive a dead teammate in Don’t Starve Together, have a living player craft a Telltale Heart from 3 Cut Grass and 1 Spider Gland, then give it directly to the teammate’s ghost. Crafting costs the rescuer 40 health; the rescuer gains 80 sanity, while the revived player returns with a 25% maximum-health penalty. A Booster Shot removes that penalty. If no one can make a heart, a Touch Stone, a prepared Meat Effigy, a Life Giving Amulet, or a server-enabled Florid Postern revival may still bring the player back.

The fastest emergency revive: a Telltale Heart
A Telltale Heart is the standard co-op rescue because one living teammate can make it during the same emergency in which another player dies. The dead character must be a ghost, and the heart must be given to that ghost by a living player. The ghost cannot revive itself by haunting the heart.

The recipe is available to the living player who is performing the rescue. The materials are ordinary world resources, so a prepared base or a teammate who routinely gathers basic supplies can make an emergency heart quickly.
Exact rescue procedure
- Confirm that the teammate is a ghost. The character should be in ghost form at or near the location where they died.
- Collect 3 Cut Grass and 1 Spider Gland. The living player needs both ingredients in their own inventory.
- Craft the Telltale Heart. The act of crafting removes 40 health from the rescuer.
- Approach the ghost. The heart must be delivered to the dead player; leaving it on the ground or haunting it does not complete the revival.
- Give the heart directly to the ghost. Once accepted, the dead character returns to life.
- Recover the dropped inventory. Revival restores the character, but the items lost at the death location still have to be collected.
- Repair the health penalty when practical. The revived player has 25% less maximum health until a Booster Shot removes the penalty.
What the heart does to each player

The health cost is paid by the crafter, not by the ghost. Do not start the craft while already close to death unless the team has a way to stabilize the rescuer immediately. The 80-sanity gain does not cancel the need to protect the rescuer from the 40-health loss.

Why a ghost cannot use its own heart
Ghosts can interact with the world in limited ways, but a Telltale Heart is not a self-service respawn item. Haunting the heart does not revive the ghost. A living player must complete the handoff, which is why the heart is the practical answer when at least one teammate remains alive.
Other ways to come back
When a heart is unavailable, the world or the server may offer another route. These options differ in whether they must be prepared before death, whether they depend on exploration, and whether a living teammate has to be present at the moment of revival.
Touch Stone
A ghost can haunt a Touch Stone to revive. Touch Stones are discovered in the world rather than crafted as an on-demand emergency item, so their usefulness depends on having located one before the death. Treat each discovered stone as a limited rescue opportunity: remember its location, keep a route to it open, and do not assume a stone will be available near every dangerous area.
Because the ghost activates the Touch Stone itself, a living teammate is not required for the actual revival. A teammate can still help by guiding the ghost to the structure, clearing hostile creatures, and recovering the dropped inventory afterward. The item rule summarized for Touch Stones does not state a maximum-health penalty, so do not promise a specific penalty outcome without checking the current game behavior.

Meat Effigy
A Meat Effigy is advance insurance. It must be prepared before the death, and in Don’t Starve Together the player must craft or attune another Meat Effigy to be eligible to revive with it. Simply finding an unprepared effigy after dying is not enough.
Teams using this method should decide who is covered, complete the required crafting or attunement while that player is alive, and record which effigy belongs to which character. If the preparation step was skipped, use a Telltale Heart or another available route instead. The summarized Meat Effigy rule does not state a maximum-health penalty, so its penalty outcome should be treated as not stated here rather than guessed.
Life Giving Amulet
A Life Giving Amulet can revive a dead player when the ghost haunts the dropped amulet. This is different from a Telltale Heart: the ghost activates the amulet, and the revival does not impose a maximum-health penalty.
The amulet must be available for the ghost to haunt. If it was not dropped or otherwise present at the death site, the player cannot use this method merely by knowing that the item exists elsewhere. A living teammate can retrieve or position the amulet, protect the ghost, and then help recover the rest of the inventory.

Florid Postern or Celestial Portal
Portal revival is controlled by the server’s customization settings. A Florid Postern or Celestial Portal can provide revival only when the server operator enables the “Revive At Florid Postern” option. If that setting is disabled, standing at the portal will not create an alternative respawn route.
Check the setting before relying on portal revival, especially on a shared or dedicated world where ordinary players may not have permission to change customization. This method is therefore a server-rule choice, not a guaranteed feature of every world.

For an unexpected death with one teammate still alive, choose the Telltale Heart first. For a death in a carefully prepared world, a Touch Stone, attuned Meat Effigy, or Life Giving Amulet can avoid the need to spend the rescuer’s health on crafting. Portal revival is viable only when the server’s rules were configured for it.

What death changes and what revival restores
Ghost state and the death location
Death turns the character into a ghost. The character’s inventory is dropped at the death location rather than carried through the resurrection. Revival returns control of the character, but it does not teleport the lost equipment into the survivor’s hands.
Mark the death site before beginning a long rescue trip. If the area is dangerous, one player can concentrate on the revival while another clears a path or watches for hostile creatures. Returning immediately for the backpack, tools, food, armor, and other equipment prevents the revived player from having to rebuild everything from nothing.
Hunger and sanity after resurrection
Resurrection applies the game’s normal hunger and sanity reset behavior. Plan for the revived character to need food and a safe place to recover rather than expecting to resume the previous survival routine with every meter unchanged. Keep a small emergency food supply near the base or the rescue route so the player can stabilize after returning.
The maximum-health penalty
The Telltale Heart’s 25% maximum-health reduction is separate from the 40 health paid by the rescuer. The rescuer loses current health once while crafting; the revived player has a lower maximum afterward. A Booster Shot can remove the revived player’s penalty, so teams should treat a heart as an immediate rescue and the Booster Shot as follow-up medical repair.

A practical team workflow
Before anyone dies
- Keep Cut Grass and Spider Glands in a known storage location so a living teammate can make a Telltale Heart without a long search.
- Locate and remember any Touch Stones encountered during exploration.
- If using Meat Effigies, complete the required crafting or attunement while the intended player is alive.
- Decide where a Life Giving Amulet will be stored or who will carry it, while remembering that the ghost must be able to haunt the dropped amulet.
- Ask the server operator whether “Revive At Florid Postern” is enabled before treating the portal as a backup plan.
- Leave a safe route from the base to likely death sites and keep emergency food available.
When one player becomes a ghost
- Identify which revival options are actually available: heart ingredients, a prepared Meat Effigy, a reachable Touch Stone, a Life Giving Amulet, or an enabled portal.
- Protect the living player who will perform the rescue. Do not send the only survivor into a fight while carrying the heart materials.
- Use the fastest valid method. A Telltale Heart normally wins when no advance preparation exists.
- After revival, move the player to safety before attempting to recover the dropped inventory.
- Restore food and sanity, then plan the Booster Shot if the heart’s health penalty is a problem.
When everyone is dead
A Telltale Heart cannot be crafted if no living player remains. The team must rely on a Touch Stone, an eligible Meat Effigy, a Life Giving Amulet, or an enabled portal. This is why advance preparation matters: a world with no living rescuer needs a self-activated or pre-arranged method.
Troubleshooting a failed revival
The heart will not work
- The recipient is not actually a ghost: verify that the intended player is dead and present in ghost form.
- The ghost is trying to haunt the heart: a living player must give the Telltale Heart directly; haunting it is ineffective.
- The rescuer lacks ingredients: collect exactly 3 Cut Grass and 1 Spider Gland before opening the crafting action.
- The rescuer cannot afford the cost: crafting consumes 40 health. Heal or otherwise stabilize the rescuer before attempting the craft if possible.
- The team expects a penalty-free result: a Telltale Heart always carries the stated 25% maximum-health penalty for the revived player; plan a Booster Shot afterward.
The player cannot revive at a Touch Stone
Confirm that the ghost has reached an actual discovered Touch Stone and that the structure has not already been used as the team’s available rescue opportunity. If the stone is too dangerous to reach, a living teammate can clear the route, but the ghost still has to haunt the stone to activate it.

Check the preparation history. In DST, the player must have crafted or attuned another Meat Effigy to qualify. An effigy that was merely seen, found, or built without the required attunement does not satisfy that condition.
The portal does not revive anyone
Ask the server operator to verify the “Revive At Florid Postern” customization option. Portal revival is unavailable when that setting is off, regardless of how close the ghost is to the Florid Postern or Celestial Portal.
Choosing the right method under pressure
- One survivor, no preparation: craft and deliver a Telltale Heart.
- The ghost can reach a known world structure: use a Touch Stone if it is available and safe enough to reach.
- The player prepared an eligible effigy: use the Meat Effigy route rather than spending the rescuer’s health on a heart.
- An amulet is available at the death site: have the ghost haunt the Life Giving Amulet to avoid the maximum-health penalty.
- The server was configured for portal revival: use the Florid Postern or Celestial Portal option according to that world’s rules.
- No living player remains and no self-activated option exists: a Telltale Heart is impossible until someone is alive again, so look first for a Touch Stone, eligible Meat Effigy, Life Giving Amulet, or enabled portal.
The central distinction is whether the team is responding to an unexpected death or using a system prepared in advance. Telltale Hearts solve the first case quickly but trade the rescuer’s health for speed and impose a temporary maximum-health reduction on the revived character. Touch Stones and Meat Effigies reward exploration and preparation, Life Giving Amulets provide a penalty-free alternative when available, and portal revival depends entirely on the server’s chosen settings.
