How to Review Your Portfolio After a Broad Market Decline

Do not change your investments solely because prices fell. Use the decline as a prompt to check whether your goal, time horizon, financial situation, cash needs and risk tolerance are still the same. Then compare your actual holdings with the asset allocation you intended, look for unwanted concentration, and decide whether a pre-planned rebalance makes sense after fees and taxes. A market drop is not, by itself, proof that you should sell or that your long-term plan is wrong.

This guide uses U.S. investor-education guidance from the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC). It is general information, not individualized investment, legal or tax advice. The cited material does not establish a universal stock-and-bond mix, predict when markets will recover, or identify any particular security to buy or sell.

What a broad decline does—and does not—tell you

A fall across major market segments changes the value and sometimes the percentages of your holdings, but it does not automatically change the job your money is meant to perform. A retirement account for a goal 25 years away has a different capacity for volatility than money needed for tuition or a house deposit next year. The SEC’s Beginners’ Guide to Asset Allocation, Diversification, and Rebalancing says an appropriate allocation depends on factors such as your goal, time horizon, financial situation and risk tolerance.

Do not treat a market headline as a forecast. The October 2026 multi-agency investor bulletin warns that trying to time the market or chase short-term returns can lead investors to sell while prices are falling and miss later gains. That is a warning about a behavioral risk, not a promise that losses will reverse or that staying invested is suitable for every account.

Step 1: Reconfirm the plan before looking for trades

Write down the purpose of each account and the date you may need the money. Include whether withdrawals are flexible or fixed, such as a scheduled tuition payment or a planned retirement income start. Record your current income, debts, insurance coverage, emergency reserves and any recent change in employment or family circumstances. Then answer these questions:

  • Has the goal changed in amount, priority or timing?
  • Has the time horizon shortened because you now expect to spend the money sooner?
  • Could a large loss make you abandon the plan or sell in panic?
  • Has your income, debt load, health situation or ability to save changed?
  • Are you willing and financially able to tolerate the range of losses that your current allocation can produce?

If one of these answers has changed, reassess the intended allocation itself. If the answers are unchanged, a decline alone is not an automatic reason to invent a new target. Keep a dated note of the decision and the assumptions behind it so a later headline does not rewrite the plan.

Step 2: Separate near-term cash from long-term investments

List expenses due over the next several months and the accounts that would fund them. Keep money for bills, known tax payments, insurance deductibles and other near-term obligations in an appropriate liquid reserve rather than relying on a stock sale during a downturn. The October 2026 World Investor Week bulletin says adequate savings can help people handle unplanned events without prematurely liquidating investments; it does not set one emergency-fund number that fits everyone.

Check the timing of any automatic withdrawals. If a retirement distribution or other payment is unavoidable during the decline, estimate how much cash must be available and whether your plan already assigns a suitable portion to cash or short-term assets. Do not move a long-term allocation into cash merely because a news story feels frightening; make the decision based on the spending schedule and your ability to replenish reserves.

Step 3: Map the entire portfolio and calculate current weights

Collect statements from taxable accounts, workplace plans, individual retirement accounts and any other investment accounts. Include cash, mutual funds, exchange-traded funds, individual securities, employer stock and investments held elsewhere when practical. For each holding, record its current value and broad exposure, not just its account label.

Calculate each category’s weight with this simple formula:

category value ÷ total portfolio value × 100 = current percentage

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Use the same categories as your written plan, such as stocks, bonds, cash and other assets. If a fund contains several asset classes, look through to its underlying exposures when the information is available; otherwise mark the uncertainty rather than assuming the fund is a single, pure category.

Category Current value Current weight Intended weight Difference
Stocks Enter statement value Value ÷ total From your plan Current minus intended
Bonds Enter statement value Value ÷ total From your plan Current minus intended
Cash Enter statement value Value ÷ total From your plan Current minus intended
Other assets Enter statement value Value ÷ total From your plan Current minus intended

Percentages can move even when you make no trade. For example, if stocks fall more than bonds, stocks become a smaller share of the total; if stocks had risen before the decline, they may still be above their intended weight. The direction of the market does not tell you which category is overweight—you must calculate it.

Step 4: Test diversification across and within categories

Diversification spreads exposure across investments whose risks are not identical. The SEC explains that it can reduce overall portfolio risk, but it cannot eliminate losses. Review diversification at two levels.

Across asset categories

Check the balance among stocks, bonds, cash and any other category in your plan. Ask whether one category now dominates because of market performance, a rollover, an inheritance or repeated purchases. Also check whether several funds actually own the same broad companies or bonds; different fund names do not guarantee different exposures.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Within each category

Inspect concentration by company, sector, industry, country or currency. Employer stock deserves separate attention because your paycheck and your investments may depend on the same business. A broad stock fund can still be complemented by a concentrated individual position, creating more exposure than the account screen suggests. Likewise, multiple bond funds may share the same issuer, maturity range or credit risk.

Make a short concentration list showing any single holding, sector or region that could materially affect the whole portfolio. Decide whether that exposure is intentional and documented. Do not call a portfolio diversified merely because it contains several tickers.

Step 5: Decide whether the target changed or only the weights changed

Use a two-branch decision:

  • Plan changed: A new goal, shorter horizon, different cash requirement, changed financial situation or changed tolerance for loss may justify revisiting the intended mix. Write the new target first; do not let the trade create the target.
  • Weights changed: If the goal and circumstances are intact, compare the current percentages with the rebalancing rule you chose in advance. A drift may call for action, but only under that rule and after checking costs.

The SEC does not prescribe one allocation, drift threshold or calendar for everyone. A target should be defensible in relation to your circumstances rather than selected because a market commentator declared one asset class “safe.”

Step 6: Choose a rebalancing method deliberately

Rebalancing means restoring the portfolio to its intended mix. The SEC’s definition is: Rebalancing is bringing your portfolio back to your original asset allocation mix. You can rebalance in several ways.

Method How it works Useful when Watch for
Sell overweight holdings Sell enough of categories above target and buy or hold categories below target. A large drift needs correction and the account permits efficient trades. Taxable gains, trading charges, bid-ask spreads and account restrictions.
Direct new money Send new contributions, dividends or scheduled deposits to underweight categories. You are adding money regularly and can correct the drift gradually. It may take time; check that contributions do not create concentration elsewhere.
Change contribution percentages Adjust workplace-plan or automatic-investment instructions toward underweights. Ongoing payroll or automatic investing is available. Confirm the change took effect and does not conflict with a match or plan rule.
Combine methods Use new contributions first, then make limited sales if the remaining drift exceeds your rule. You want to limit taxable sales while restoring the mix. Track the residual percentages and the date for the next review.

Two common triggers are a calendar review, such as an interval selected in your written plan, and a threshold review, in which a category is acted on after it moves beyond a predetermined percentage or percentage-point band. The SEC guide discusses both approaches and notes that rebalancing generally works best relatively infrequently. It does not identify a universally optimal schedule or threshold.

Check costs, taxes and account rules before selling

Before placing an order, list every likely consequence:

  • Transaction commissions or account fees, if any.
  • Bid-ask spreads, fund purchase or redemption charges, and any short-term trading restriction.
  • Realized capital gains or losses in a taxable account, including the holding period that affects tax treatment under U.S. rules.
  • Distribution, withdrawal or transfer rules in retirement and workplace accounts.
  • Whether selling an employer plan holding affects a match, vesting or plan limitation.

Tax treatment depends on the account, security, basis, holding period and your tax situation. The SEC guide suggests that a financial professional or tax adviser may help identify ways to minimize costs. If a sale would create a large tax bill, compare it with directing future contributions to underweights or waiting for a more suitable tax-management opportunity. Do not let a desire for a perfectly exact percentage create costs larger than the benefit of a small correction.

Use a written review worksheet

Complete this worksheet before making a change:

  1. Goal: State what the account funds and the amount or outcome required.
  2. Time horizon: Record the earliest realistic date the money may be needed and any fixed withdrawals.
  3. Financial capacity: Note income stability, debts, reserves and other resources that affect your ability to absorb a loss.
  4. Risk tolerance: Describe the loss or volatility you could endure without abandoning the plan.
  5. Liquidity: Identify cash reserved for near-term obligations and unexpected expenses.
  6. Target mix: Enter intended percentages by asset category and any concentration limits you chose.
  7. Current mix: Calculate values and percentages across accounts.
  8. Drift: Mark categories outside your stated review band.
  9. Execution: Select sales, new contributions, changed contribution rates or a combination.
  10. Cost check: Estimate fees, spreads, taxes and account restrictions before submitting an order.
  11. Record: Save the date, percentages, reason and next review trigger.

How to avoid market-timing mistakes

Market timing is not simply “being cautious.” It is making short-term trades based on a prediction about the next move. That approach can turn an unrealized decline into a realized loss, leave an investor waiting in cash, and require two correct decisions—when to exit and when to re-enter. The October 2026 multi-agency bulletin recommends patient, periodic investing as a way to mitigate the effect of volatility and short-term swings, while emphasizing that no strategy guarantees a profit.

Replace prediction questions with plan questions. Instead of asking, “Will prices fall another 10%?” ask, “Has my goal, horizon, cash need or risk capacity changed?” Instead of asking, “What is the winning sector this month?” ask, “Does my current exposure exceed the limit in my plan?” This keeps a review tied to information about your life and portfolio rather than an unknowable market forecast.

Common problems and practical fixes

“My portfolio is down, so I must be too aggressive.”

A loss describes recent performance, not automatically the suitability of the allocation. Revisit the goal, horizon and capacity for loss. If those are unchanged, compare actual weights with the target before deciding that the target itself is wrong.

“I own many funds, so I am diversified.”

Count underlying exposures, not fund names. Use holdings reports to identify duplicated companies, sectors, regions and bond issuers. Consolidating overlapping positions may improve clarity, but any sale still requires a cost and tax check.

“I will sell now and buy back after the bottom.”

That is a market-timing plan. No cited guidance can tell you when the bottom or a recovery will occur. If you need cash soon, raise it based on the spending requirement and your written allocation—not on a prediction.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

“I need an exact percentage immediately.”

Small deviations may not justify taxable sales or trading charges. Use the threshold or calendar rule you selected, and consider directing new money to underweights first.

“My situation is too complicated to review.”

Start with a one-page inventory of accounts, goals, cash needs and current percentages. For account-specific tax, legal or suitability questions, consult a qualified professional who understands your jurisdiction and account types.

When individualized advice is warranted

Consider professional help when you have several account types, concentrated employer stock, a large taxable gain, required withdrawals, a business or trust, cross-border tax issues, or a goal that cannot tolerate a substantial short-term loss. Bring the worksheet, statements, cost basis and your written target to the meeting. Ask the adviser to explain fees, conflicts, tax assumptions and why a proposed change fits the stated goal and horizon.

For U.S. investors, verify current tax and account rules before acting; rules and forms can change. Investors outside the United States should not assume that the SEC’s educational material or U.S. tax treatment applies to them.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A concise decision rule

After a broad decline, first protect near-term spending, then verify the plan, calculate the actual allocation, inspect concentration, and apply your preselected rebalancing rule only after costs and taxes are understood. Change the target when your life or financial capacity changed—not merely because markets produced an uncomfortable month or year.
