Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsReview crypto risk as an inventory-and-access exercise, not as a prediction exercise. Find every direct and indirect holding, calculate each one as a share of your investable assets, identify concentration and overlapping risks, verify how you could sell or transfer it, inspect custody terms, and compare the result with your time horizon and ability to absorb a loss. Do this without assuming a crash is imminent or that one percentage of crypto is right for everyone.
What a pre-downturn review can—and cannot—tell you
A portfolio review can show where you are exposed, how you might lose access to an asset, and whether your current mix still fits your written financial plan. It cannot predict when a downturn will begin, how far prices will fall, or whether selling now will improve your outcome. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) describes crypto assets as speculative and potentially exceptionally volatile; its investor education materials also warn that markets can be illiquid and that a platform may suspend withdrawals.
As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.
The useful question is therefore not “What will the market do next?” It is “If prices fall sharply or a provider becomes unavailable, which parts of my plan could fail?” A disciplined review gives you information to make a decision consistent with your own objectives rather than an emotion-driven reaction to a headline.
The SEC’s March 23, 2023 Investor Alert states: “The only money you should put at risk with any speculative investment is money you can afford to lose entirely.” That is a caution about speculative investing, not a promise that losses can be limited or recovered.

1. Set the personal risk frame first
Write down the purpose of the money before looking at token prices. Record when you may need it, whether it funds essential spending, and what loss would force you to borrow, miss a bill, or abandon a goal. Include emergency reserves, near-term home or education costs, and any other commitments that should not depend on a speculative asset recovering.
Questions to answer in writing
- What goal does this money serve, and on what date might I need it?
- How much could I lose without reducing essential spending or taking on expensive debt?
- Would a large loss make me sell in panic, or could I follow my long-term plan?
- Do I carry high-interest debt that should be addressed before adding to speculative investments?
- What other investments, income sources, or liabilities already depend on the same economic conditions?
Risk tolerance (your willingness to endure losses) is different from risk capacity (your financial ability to endure them). A long time horizon may allow more time for recovery, but it does not make a volatile asset safe. The SEC’s allocation guidance says an appropriate mix depends on time horizon and risk tolerance; it does not prescribe a universal crypto percentage.
2. Build a complete exposure ledger
Finding crypto exposure requires active research. The SEC’s World Investor Week 2023 material advises investors to ask questions and look across their entire portfolio rather than relying on a single account statement. Create one list covering both assets you hold directly and securities whose value is linked to crypto.

- Exchange or trading accounts, including small or inactive balances.
- Self-custody hardware, mobile, desktop, and browser wallets.
- Brokerage accounts holding exchange-traded products, trusts, or other crypto-linked securities.
- Retirement accounts, workplace plans, and managed portfolios that may contain a crypto-linked fund.
- Lending, staking, yield, or borrowing arrangements where you transferred control of assets.
- Stablecoins, wrapped tokens, derivatives, and cash balances that depend on a crypto platform.
For every line, record the current value and valuation time, the account or wallet, the asset or product name, whether exposure is direct or through a security, and who controls the keys or records. Note borrowed or lent assets separately: an apparent holding may be a claim on a provider rather than an asset you can withdraw immediately.
A practical ledger layout
| Field | What to record | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Holding | Asset, fund, trust, or contract | Reveals duplicate or linked exposures |
| Value and date | Current value at a stated time | Makes percentage calculations reproducible |
| Location | Exchange, wallet, brokerage, or retirement account | Shows platform and access concentration |
| Form | Direct asset, spot ETP, futures ETP, or other security | Determines custody, tracking, and disclosure risks |
| Custody | Self-custody or named third-party custodian | Identifies key-management or provider risks |
| Access route | How you would sell or transfer it | Separates price risk from liquidity and operational risk |
| Debt or lending | Any loan, collateral, staking, or lending term | Shows claims that may not be immediately withdrawable |
| Fees and restrictions | Trading, transfer, withdrawal, and account charges | Estimates the cost of changing position or accessing cash |
Save statements, wallet addresses, product documents, and the relevant terms on the date you review them. Provider terms and product disclosures can change, so note the document date rather than treating a remembered feature as permanent.

3. Calculate weights and find concentration
Use total investable assets as the denominator, not just the value in one crypto account. For each line, calculate:
Position weight = current position value ÷ total investable portfolio value × 100
Then calculate group totals by underlying asset, platform or custodian, product type, and broad risk driver. A portfolio can look diversified by token count while remaining concentrated in one market, one custodian, or one technology.
Look for overlap, not just separate tickers
- Several tokens may rise and fall with the same broad crypto market.
- Multiple products may depend on the same underlying asset or the same market infrastructure.
- Different accounts may all rely on one exchange, custodian, wallet provider, or banking connection.
- A narrow fund can concentrate in a small group of assets even when it is packaged as one security.
- Borrowed positions can increase effective exposure beyond the cash value shown in an account.
Investor.gov explains that diversification means spreading investments across different assets and within asset categories. Owning several closely related crypto assets does not establish that their risks differ, and diversification cannot guarantee gains or prevent losses. Compare crypto exposure with the rest of your portfolio as well: a listed security, a technology stock, and a direct token may react to the same risk-on conditions even though they appear in different accounts.
4. Separate price risk from liquidity and access risk
Price risk asks how much an asset could lose value. Liquidity risk asks whether you can sell at a reasonable price. Access risk asks whether you can reach the asset or move the proceeds when you need them. Review all three separately.

- [Dont Hesite to Order] 24 hours customer services and professional technology team are standing by
For each holding, document the exit path
- Name the venue where a sale or transfer would occur.
- Record trading hours, order types, minimums, spread information, and stated trading or withdrawal fees.
- Note identity checks, transfer limits, network requirements, settlement timing, and any waiting period.
- Read what happens if the provider pauses withdrawals, suffers an outage, or enters insolvency proceedings.
- Identify a backup route for records and cash, without assuming that a second account removes market risk.
A market can be open while your particular platform is unavailable. A quoted price can exist while the order you need cannot be filled at that price. The SEC has warned that crypto platforms may suspend withdrawals and that recovery of customer assets after a failure can depend on the legal and contractual arrangement.

- Sharp price fall: Recalculate the portfolio weight after a large decline and ask whether the resulting loss would threaten a goal.
- Withdrawal pause: Identify bills or obligations that would be affected if one provider blocked transfers for an unknown period.
- High congestion or thin liquidity: Check whether fees, spreads, or settlement delays could prevent an orderly transaction.
- Account compromise: Verify recovery channels, authentication, device security, and transaction alerts.
- Provider failure: Determine what records prove your claim and what the terms say about ownership, lending, and recovery.
These are planning scenarios, not forecasts or universal sell triggers.
5. Review custody and operational exposure
Custody changes who performs critical tasks and which failure modes you bear. Neither self-custody nor third-party custody eliminates risk.
Third-party custody
For an exchange, broker, fund sponsor, or other custodian, read the current customer agreement, prospectus, and fee schedule. Look for:
- Whether customer assets are segregated, lent, pledged, or commingled with company assets.
- Who controls private keys and how transactions are authorized.
- What insurance covers, what it excludes, and whether it protects against market loss, theft, or provider insolvency.
- What legal claim you have if the provider fails and how withdrawals are handled during a disruption.
- Security controls, privacy practices, incident notifications, and account-recovery procedures.
- Trading, custody, transfer, network, and account fees, including circumstances in which fees can change.
Do not infer protection from a familiar interface or a product’s marketing name. The relevant rights are in the current agreement and regulatory disclosures, and they can vary by jurisdiction.

Self-custody
Self-custody removes a provider’s direct control but places key management on you. The SEC’s December 12, 2025 custody bulletin states: “With self-custody, you control your crypto assets and are responsible for managing the private keys to any of your crypto wallets.” Loss, theft, destruction, or disclosure of a private key or recovery phrase can permanently remove access.
- Confirm that you understand how the wallet signs and broadcasts transactions.
- Keep recovery information offline and protected from unauthorized access, fire, and physical loss.
- Test recovery with a small amount before relying on a new device or backup.
- Use transaction previews, address checks, and spending limits where available.
- Never share a seed phrase or private key with a support agent, website, or anyone requesting it.
Self-custody also creates continuity questions: if you are unavailable, can a trusted person follow a documented, secure process without receiving the secret itself in an unsafe channel?
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.6. Compare direct holdings with exchange-traded products
A crypto-linked security can change custody and access responsibilities, but it does not remove exposure to the underlying market. Read the current prospectus and reports rather than relying on shorthand such as “crypto fund.”
| Feature | Direct crypto | Exchange-traded product (ETP) |
|---|---|---|
| Access | Wallet or platform account; transfers may require network and withdrawal steps | Brokerage trading during the listing’s market hours; normal brokerage settlement applies |
| Key responsibility | You or a platform manages private keys | The product’s custodian and sponsor manage the underlying holdings under disclosed terms |
| Structure | Direct ownership or a contractual claim through a platform | Security with its own sponsor, custody, fee, market, and disclosure framework |
| Tracking | Market price and any platform spread or fee | Market price can differ from the underlying value; review tracking methodology and expenses |
| Trading and access risks | Platform outages, withdrawal pauses, wallet errors, and network congestion | Exchange hours, brokerage access, liquidity, creation/redemption mechanics, and market-price deviations |
| Underlying risks | Volatility, illiquidity, theft, and regulatory or platform risks | Underlying volatility plus product, sponsor, custodian, tracking, and fee risks |
SEC guidance distinguishes spot bitcoin and ether ETPs from futures ETPs and notes that spot bitcoin and ether ETPs are not investment companies registered under the Investment Company Act of 1940. That legal structure matters: check what the product actually holds, how it values the asset, who provides custody, what sponsor fee applies, and how tracking is measured. A listed product is not the same thing as directly holding bitcoin or ether.
7. Match the result to your written investment plan
After calculating weights and documenting access, compare the actual portfolio with the allocation you selected for your goals. Holdings can drift as prices change; Investor.gov describes periodic and threshold-based rebalancing as practices some investors use, not mandatory rules.
Best Value
If you consider rebalancing
- Define the target allocation and an acceptable range before placing an order.
- Decide whether the change is driven by the written plan rather than a short-term forecast.
- Estimate spreads, trading fees, transfer charges, and any tax consequences.
- Check settlement and withdrawal timing so the proceeds are available when needed.
- Record the transaction, new weights, and the reason for the decision.
Rebalancing restores a chosen allocation; it does not guarantee a profit or identify a market bottom. Selling may create taxable gains, and tax rules differ by jurisdiction and account type. The reviewed SEC materials do not provide individualized tax advice or prescribe a rebalancing schedule.
If the review shows that crypto money is needed for essential spending, that the access route is unclear, or that the custody terms are not understood, pause and obtain qualified financial, tax, legal, or custody advice appropriate to your jurisdiction before acting.
8. Read product and provider disclosures closely
Use primary documents dated close to your review: account agreements, wallet documentation, fee schedules, prospectuses, shareholder reports, and notices of material changes. Confirm:
- The legal entity you contract with and the jurisdiction governing the relationship.
- Whether the product is spot, futures-based, leveraged, lending-related, or otherwise linked indirectly to crypto.
- How prices are sourced, how tracking is calculated, and what happens during market disruption.
- All recurring and transaction-based fees, including sponsor, custody, spread, network, and transfer charges.
- Withdrawal, redemption, suspension, and account-closure terms.
- Disclosures about conflicts, lending, rehypothecation, commingling, insurance, and insolvency.
Do not treat a product label, token count, or past performance as evidence that the investment is diversified or suitable for your circumstances.
9. Finish with a decision record, not a prediction
Put the review date on the ledger and write a short decision record. State your goal, current weights, largest concentration, custody arrangement, access dependency, and the condition that would cause you to review the plan again. A condition might be a change in your financial goal, a provider’s terms, a material fee change, or a drift beyond a range you selected—not a claim that an indicator can forecast a crash.
The SEC advises investors to have and follow an investment plan rather than allowing short-term emotions to disrupt long-term objectives. If you choose to take no action, record that as a deliberate decision after checking the risks, not as evidence that the risks disappeared.
One-page pre-downturn checklist
- Every exchange, wallet, brokerage, retirement, lending, and crypto-linked product appears in the ledger.
- Each position has a value, date, custody arrangement, access route, and fee record.
- Weights are calculated against total investable assets, with group totals for assets, custodians, and product types.
- Overlapping exposures and borrowed or lent positions are identified.
- Withdrawal pauses, provider failure, liquidity, spread, settlement, and network risks have been considered.
- Third-party custody terms or self-custody recovery procedures are understood and documented securely.
- Spot and futures ETP structures, tracking, sponsor fees, and current disclosures have been checked where relevant.
- The result is compared with your time horizon, goals, debt, risk capacity, and written allocation.
- Any proposed change includes costs and possible tax consequences and is not based on an unsupported forecast.
