Google’s account settings do not have one switch that stops every kind of activity or location data from being saved. To limit account-linked history, review Web & App Activity, Maps Timeline (formerly Location History), and YouTube History separately; to change ad personalization, use My Ad Center. You can pause future saving, delete existing activity, and change ad settings—but those are different actions with different effects.
What these four controls do—and do not do
Google provides separate controls for different kinds of account history and ad personalization. Pausing a history setting is not a universal collection stop, and it does not automatically delete information already saved. Google also notes that information may be saved through other Google services even when Timeline is paused or its location data is deleted.

- Web & App Activity: controls saving activity on Google sites and apps, along with associated information.
- Maps Timeline (Location History): controls location data saved to Timeline; it is separate from Web & App Activity.
- YouTube History: has separate controls for Search and Watch History.
- Personalized ads: controls information used to personalize ads; it is not an ad blocker or a blanket data-collection switch.
Google’s Privacy Policy, effective October 1, 2026, describes how Google handles information across its services. The controls below let you manage particular account settings, not every way information may be processed.
How to find the settings in your account
Start at Google Account Activity controls, or go to your Google Account and open Data & privacy, then look for the relevant history or activity control. You can also use account.google.com. Google says current versions of its Search-service apps may also provide updated privacy settings. Labels and paths can vary by device, app version, account, and region, so follow what your account currently displays.

- Open your Google Account’s Data & privacy area and find History settings or Activity controls.
- Review Web & App Activity, Timeline or Location History, and YouTube History one at a time. Choose whether to leave each on or pause it.
- For information already saved, open the relevant history’s deletion or auto-delete options and choose what to remove or retain.
- Open Google’s Privacy Settings guidance if you need help locating controls. Then check ad personalization separately in My Ad Center.
Google’s Safety Center says pause and auto-delete controls are available for Search and browsing activity, YouTube History, and Location History. Review the options shown in your own account before changing or deleting data.
1. Web & App Activity
Google says Web & App Activity saves activity on Google sites and apps, including associated information such as location. Its help page notes that activity may include location based on a device’s general area and IP address. When the setting is on, Google may use activity to personalize experiences.
Keeping it enabled can make searches and recommendations more tailored. If you prefer less account-linked activity history, you can pause it in Activity controls. Pausing affects future saving under this control; it does not erase activity already in your account. To remove older information, use the deletion or auto-delete choices for the activity.

2. Maps Timeline (Location History)
Timeline is a separate location-history control, not a master switch for every location-related record. Google warns that location data may still be saved in your account through other Google sites, apps, and services when relevant activity settings are on—even if you pause Timeline or delete its location data.
If you do not want Timeline to keep saving location history, pause it in the location or Timeline control shown in your account. If your goal is to remove information already saved, use Timeline’s deletion options as well. Consider Web & App Activity separately because Google documents associated location information there.

YouTube History includes separate controls for Search History and Watch History. Google documents options to pause and delete these histories. Keeping them may support a more tailored YouTube experience and make past searches or watched videos easier to revisit; pausing limits future saving under the relevant history control.
In Activity controls, review the YouTube History setting and the available options for search and watch activity. To clear older entries, use the deletion controls rather than assuming that pausing removes them.

Use My Ad Center to control information used to show personalized ads and to turn ad personalization off. This changes how ads are personalized; it does not stop ads from appearing and should not be treated as a switch that prevents all data collection.

Open My Ad Center from your Google Account or Google’s ad controls and review the personalization setting shown there. Keep this step separate from pausing or deleting account history: changing ad personalization does not itself delete Web & App Activity, Timeline data, or YouTube History.

Choose settings based on the tradeoff you want
- Keep useful history: leave the relevant controls on if you value tailored experiences or account history, and review deletion or auto-delete options for older data.
- Save less going forward: pause the individual history controls you do not want saving activity. Do not assume one pause covers the others.
- Remove what is already saved: use each history’s deletion controls; pausing alone does not perform this step.
- Change ad personalization: adjust it separately in My Ad Center. This is about ads, not a general history or collection control.
Google may change menu names and paths. Check the settings in your own account periodically, especially after app or account-interface changes.
