Review an AI browser extension as if it were software that could handle everything visible in your browser—not as a harmless chatbot add-on. Before you install, inspect the official store listing, read every line in the installation prompt, map each requested permission to a specific feature, check the sites covered, and compare those capabilities with the publisher’s privacy disclosures.
“All websites” or “all data on your computer” is not automatic proof of malware, but it gives a compromised, misconfigured, or dishonest extension a much larger opportunity to expose information. Start with the narrowest access that can support the feature, then expand it only when you understand why the extension needs more.

What a browser permission actually tells you
A permission is a capability grant. It describes what an extension could read, change, request, download, or otherwise interact with; it does not tell you what the developer will actually collect or how long data will be retained. That second question belongs to the privacy policy and the store’s data-use disclosure.
AI features often make permissions feel more complicated because the extension may combine page content with a remote AI service. The browser still applies the same permission rules it applies to every other extension. An AI label does not make broad access safer or more necessary.

| Permission or scope | What it can enable | Questions to ask before accepting |
|---|---|---|
| Current tab or selected text | Reading the page or text you deliberately submit for summarising, rewriting, translation, or explanation. | Does the feature work only after you click the extension? Is the selected content sent to an AI service? |
| Named websites | Reading or modifying pages on the listed domains. | Are those domains exactly where the feature is needed? Are login, payment, health, or work systems included? |
| All websites | Reading, requesting, or modifying content on every page, including account pages and web applications. | Why must the feature run everywhere? Can current-site or selected-site access provide the same result? |
| Downloads | Starting or managing downloads produced by the extension. | What files does it create, where do they go, and can it download without a deliberate click? |
| Browser settings or other extensions | Changing configuration or interacting with other installed components. | Is this necessary for the advertised function, and will the extension explain changes it makes? |
| Computer data or local files | Potential access beyond ordinary page content, depending on the browser and operating system. | What exact data is involved, and is there a less invasive way to import it? |
Chrome describes some extension warnings as access to “read and change site data.” A warning means the extension has a powerful capability, not that the extension is automatically dangerous. Treat the warning as a prompt to investigate rather than as a verdict.
A pre-install review that takes a few minutes
1. Start at the official extension store
Find the listing in the browser’s official store instead of installing a file supplied through an unsolicited message, advertisement, or download page. Check that the listing identifies the developer, links to a support or company site, and provides a way to contact the publisher. An external download can be genuine, but it requires you to authenticate the source and the package yourself; the store listing gives you a safer starting point.
Record the exact extension name and publisher before clicking Install. Look for similarly named copies, misspellings, or icons that imitate a popular tool. A verification badge, a high rating, or many reviews can be useful signals, but none substitutes for examining permissions and data handling.

Do not skim the browser’s permission dialog. Read every item, including wording that appears unrelated to the feature you want. Firefox explicitly shows a dialog listing the permissions an add-on is requesting; Mozilla explains that those requests indicate what the add-on may access or modify and can include sensitive categories such as authentication information.
Copy the permission names into your notes if the list is long. The wording is a capability disclosure: accepting it allows the browser to make that capability available to the extension. If you cannot explain an item in ordinary language, stop and investigate before accepting.
3. Match every permission to a feature
Write down the feature you expect to use—such as summarising the current article, filling a form, or translating selected text—and connect it to the minimum access it plausibly needs. Chrome’s developer guidance recommends limiting requests to critical information and using less invasive alternatives where possible.

- A summariser that runs after you select text may need the current page or selected sites.
- A writing assistant embedded in a web editor may need access to that editor’s domain.
- An extension that claims to work on every page should explain why a global content script is required rather than relying on a user click.
- Access to downloads, browser settings, or local files deserves a separate explanation; these capabilities are not implied by ordinary text generation.
If the publisher gives no explanation, or the explanation describes a different capability, treat the mismatch as a reason not to install.

Separate permission breadth from feature usefulness. “Current tab,” a list of named sites, and “all sites” are materially different risk levels even when the extension’s interface looks identical. Access to all websites can expose information on email, banking, health, employment, administration, and private web applications.
Broad scope is not proof that the code is malicious. It does increase the consequence of a compromised update, a server-side mistake, or an extension that behaves differently from its description. Prefer an extension whose initial scope matches the sites where you will use it.
5. Read data practices separately
Permissions answer “what could this extension access?” The privacy policy and store disclosure should answer “what does it collect, where does it send it, how long does it retain it, with whom is it shared, and how can it be deleted?” Read both documents.
For an AI extension, look specifically for whether page text, prompts, account identifiers, or telemetry are transmitted to an AI provider; whether that information is used to improve models; how long logs and backups remain; and whether the publisher sells, shares, or discloses data to other parties. A policy that is missing, vague, unrelated to the named publisher, or inconsistent with the requested access is a stop sign.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsChrome’s store policies require developers to request the narrowest permissions necessary and to disclose data-use practices for Google API data. That requirement is useful context, but it is not a substitute for reading the particular listing and policy.

6. Verify the publisher and history
Compare the publisher name in the store with the name on the official website, support contact, privacy policy, and release notes. Check when the extension was last updated and whether the update history shows a stable maintenance pattern or unexplained ownership changes. A new extension can be legitimate, but you should compensate for its shorter track record with narrower access and limited use.
Reviews can reveal broken features, intrusive behaviour, or sudden changes. Read recent reviews for concrete observations rather than relying on an average score. Store moderation and review systems reduce some risk; they cannot inspect every future update or guarantee that a publisher’s data practices match your expectations.
7. Decide whether the benefit justifies the exposure
Ask what you gain and what would happen if the extension or its AI service were breached. If the extension saves a few seconds but needs access to every site, choose a narrower alternative or use a standalone web tool where you can paste only the text you intend to share. If the feature is essential, document the reason and restrict the sites as tightly as the browser allows.
8. Keep a record for later review
Save the publisher name, version, permissions, host scope, privacy-policy date, and the reason you installed it. This takes little time and makes a later permission change visible. It is especially helpful on a work-managed browser with many extensions.
How to judge “all websites” and “all data on your computer”
Chrome identifies access to all data on the computer and websites as a high-alert capability. Access to data on all websites can let an extension read, request, or modify data on every page, including sensitive account pages. Consider the following questions before approving either warning:
- Does the feature need to run automatically on every page, or could it activate only after you click it?
- Could you list the exact domains where you will use it?
- Does the extension need to alter page content, or only read selected text?
- Would a separate import step let you choose a file instead of granting ongoing computer access?
- What happens to credentials, private messages, customer records, or confidential documents that appear on a covered page?
Permission scope is a risk axis, not a binary safe-or-unsafe label. A narrowly scoped extension can still mishandle data, and a broad one can have a legitimate technical reason. Your decision should combine scope, necessity, data practices, publisher identity, source authenticity, and the controls available after installation.

Chrome: review and restrict access
Before installation
- Open the extension’s listing in the official Chrome Web Store and confirm the publisher, support details, privacy policy, description, reviews, and update history.
- Select the install action and pause at the permission warning. Read each requested capability and note the sites or categories of data covered.
- Compare the list with the feature you intend to use. If an item has no credible explanation, cancel the installation.
- After installation, open the extension’s details in Chrome’s extensions management area and review its site access before using it on real accounts.
Choose the narrowest site setting
Chrome provides access choices that include “when you select the extension,” “on current site,” and “on all sites.” Begin with “when you select the extension” when the feature can be user-triggered. Use “on current site” for a task limited to the page you are viewing. Reserve “on all sites” for a clearly justified feature that cannot work without global access.
In the extension’s management details, use the allowed-sites controls to add or remove domains. Remove sites where the feature is not needed, particularly financial, health, identity, administrative, and employer systems. If the extension fails on a required page, add that one domain and test again rather than opening access everywhere.
Recheck after updates
An update can change an extension’s requested capabilities or behaviour. Revisit its details after significant updates and compare the current permission list with your record. If the scope expands without a clear feature explanation, disable the extension, remove the newly allowed sites, and contact the publisher before deciding whether to continue.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Firefox: inspect the installation dialog
Firefox shows a permission dialog when you install an add-on. Read every listed item and compare it with the add-on description. Mozilla advises asking whether the extension’s website or its description on addons.mozilla.org explains why it requests each permission.
Install from addons.mozilla.org when possible. If you obtain an add-on elsewhere, authenticate the publisher and package carefully before opening it in a browser profile that contains personal accounts. Treat an unexplained request to access authentication information, modify pages broadly, or change browser behaviour as a reason to cancel.
After installation, open Firefox’s add-on management page to disable or remove the add-on when you do not need it. Firefox’s installation dialog is the key pre-install checkpoint; do not assume that a familiar AI brand makes an unexpected permission acceptable.

Compare two AI extensions without guessing
When two extensions offer similar AI features, score them on the same axes. The extension with fewer permissions is not automatically better if it cannot perform the task, but an unexplained difference in scope should influence your choice.
| Comparison axis | What to record | How to interpret it |
|---|---|---|
| Permission breadth | Current tab, named sites, all sites, browser settings, downloads, computer data, or other categories. | Prefer the smallest set that supports the stated feature. |
| Feature fit | The exact feature that supposedly requires each capability. | Reject permissions that have no specific, credible connection to the feature. |
| Data practices | Collection, transmission to an AI service, retention, sharing, model-training use, and deletion. | Prefer clear, specific disclosures that match the permission scope. |
| Publisher transparency | Identifiable developer, support site, contact method, policy owner, and update history. | Unclear ownership makes later accountability difficult. |
| Source authenticity | Official store listing versus an external download or repackaged file. | Use the official store and treat external packages as higher-verification work. |
| Ongoing control | Ability to restrict sites, disable, uninstall, and review changes after updates. | Choose an extension you can limit and remove without losing control of the browser. |
Keep the comparison factual. Do not infer privacy from a polished interface, a short policy, or an AI provider’s reputation. The evidence you need is the combination of capability, necessity, handling, identity, and control.
Red flags and credible explanations
| Observation | Why it matters | Practical response |
|---|---|---|
| “All websites” for a feature advertised as selected-text summarisation | The host scope appears broader than the described workflow. | Ask for a technical explanation; try current-site or click-to-run access first. |
| Access to computer data with no import or file-management feature | The capability may expose information unrelated to page assistance. | Do not install until the publisher identifies the exact data and purpose. |
| Privacy policy missing or owned by a different entity | You cannot verify collection, retention, or deletion commitments. | Pause installation and confirm the legal publisher and policy. |
| Permission list changed substantially after an update | The extension’s risk profile may have changed. | Disable it, review the release explanation, and remove new site access until resolved. |
| External installer asks you to bypass browser warnings | The package is outside the browser’s normal source and review path. | Use the official store or authenticate the package through a trusted administrator. |
| Reviews report unexpected redirects, injected ads, or account prompts | These behaviours can indicate misuse even when the advertised feature works. | Do not test it with sensitive accounts; uninstall and report the listing. |
After installation: limit, test, and monitor
Run a low-risk test
Use a public article or dummy document first. Confirm when the extension activates, which text it sends, whether it modifies the page, and whether it creates downloads or new browser tabs. Do not begin with a banking, medical, customer, or employer account.
Limit exposure by workflow
- Keep site access at the click-to-run or current-site setting when possible.
- Use a separate browser profile for experimental extensions and keep personal accounts out of that profile.
- Do not paste secrets, API keys, passwords, identity numbers, or confidential records into an AI prompt unless the service’s handling is acceptable for that information.
- Disable the extension when you are not using its feature, especially on shared or work-managed computers.
Watch for behavioural changes
Unexpected toolbar icons, new tabs, redirects, injected text, downloads, login prompts, or unexplained CPU and network activity are reasons to stop. Disable the extension first, then check whether the behaviour disappears. A clean reinstall is not a justification to grant broader permissions; investigate the publisher and update history instead.
If you accepted too much access
- Open the browser’s extension management page and disable the extension immediately.
- Remove its allowed sites or set access to the narrowest option before re-enabling it.
- Uninstall it if the publisher cannot explain the access or if the behaviour was unexpected.
- Review sensitive accounts used while the extension was active. Change passwords and revoke sessions according to your organisation’s incident procedure when exposure is plausible.
- Check downloads, recently installed extensions, browser settings, and security alerts for changes you did not make.
- Report suspicious behaviour through the official store and notify a workplace administrator if the browser or data belonged to an organisation.
Removing an extension stops future access but cannot recall information it may already have transmitted. That is why the permission review and a low-risk first test matter before you sign in to sensitive services.
A repeatable checklist
- Official store listing opened and publisher identity matched.
- Every installation-prompt line understood.
- Each permission linked to a named feature.
- Host scope limited to the current tab or necessary domains.
- Privacy policy and store disclosure explain collection, transmission, retention, sharing, and deletion.
- AI-service handling is acceptable for the text and accounts involved.
- Recent updates and reviews checked for permission or behaviour changes.
- Post-install access set to the narrowest useful option.
- First test performed on non-sensitive content.
- Extension can be disabled, restricted, or uninstalled without losing control of the browser.
Why this review is worth doing
Browser permissions are the boundary between an extension and the pages you trust. Reviewing them before installation turns a vague “Is this AI tool safe?” question into testable decisions: what can it access, where can it run, why does it need that access, what happens to the data, who operates it, and can you withdraw access later? Applying those questions consistently is more reliable than judging an extension by its branding, rating, or warning color.
