How to Review and Revoke Binance API Key Permissions for Trading Bots

By Freedom251 Team · · 12 min read

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Open Binance’s API Management page, identify the key used by your bot, and keep only the access the bot actually needs. A monitoring script normally needs account-data and stream access, not trading access; an order-executing bot needs the relevant trading permission but ordinarily never needs withdrawals. Add a trusted-IP allowlist when the key and account support it. If the key or secret may have been exposed, do not rely on editing permissions: delete the key, investigate account activity, and create a replacement only after securing the account.

The labels and available controls depend on the key type, product scope, account mode and current Binance rules. The paths below reflect Binance’s documented web and app flows and the official rules available on 13 October 2026; confirm the prompts shown in your signed-in account before saving a change.

What a Binance API key can allow

An API key is a credential that lets software call Binance endpoints on your behalf. The key identifies the application; its paired secret authenticates requests. Binance’s developer documentation treats both values as sensitive. A person who obtains usable credentials may be able to perform every operation enabled on that key, so permission review is an account-security task rather than a bot-maintenance formality.

Binance’s Spot API documentation separates endpoint access into permissions such as TRADE, USER_DATA and USER_STREAM. Its example uses one key for trading and another for monitoring, which is a useful isolation pattern: a read-only dashboard does not inherit the ability to place orders, and a trading process does not need the credentials used by unrelated reporting software.

Match access to the bot’s job

Bot function Access normally required Access that should usually be off
Balance, order-history or account monitor Read/account-data permission (the documentation calls this USER_DATA); a user-data stream if the monitor consumes live events TRADE, withdrawals and any product permission the monitor never queries
Spot or Margin order executor Read/account-data access plus Spot/Margin trading permission for the endpoints the bot uses Withdrawals; Futures access unless the bot genuinely trades Futures
Futures bot The relevant Futures permission and account-data access, if the key and account are eligible Withdrawals and unrelated Spot/Margin or administrative access
One-time data export Read/account-data access for the export period Trading, withdrawals and a permanently running user stream

Permission names and product scopes can change with Binance account modes. Use the controls actually displayed for the selected key rather than assuming that every account exposes the same switches.

Before you edit anything

Make the review from a trusted device and a normal Binance sign-in. Do not send the API key or secret in a chat, support ticket, screenshot, public issue, screen recording or form that is not an official Binance interface. A label such as “production bot” is safe to discuss; the credential itself is not.

  • Record which bot, host and product use the key. If several programs share one key, separate them before changing permissions so a failure has a clear owner.
  • Determine whether the bot only reads data, places orders, or trades a specific product. Ask the bot’s documentation for the exact endpoint permissions it requires; do not grant a broader permission merely because an error message suggests it.
  • Check whether the bot host has stable public IPv4 addresses. An IP allowlist is useful only when those addresses are known and maintained.
  • Have a rollback plan. Keep the bot stopped or in a safe mode while changing credentials, and make sure you can create a fresh key if the old one must be deleted.
  • Look for recent orders, withdrawals, logins and other activity before making a routine change. Unexpected activity changes this from a permissions tidy-up into an incident response.

How to review permissions in Binance

Web account path

  1. Sign in to Binance through the official website. Open your profile or account menu and choose API Management. Binance’s key-creation help page uses this profile/account path; the exact menu wording can vary by region and interface version.
  2. Find the key by its label and compare it with the bot or service inventory. If you cannot identify who owns a key, treat that uncertainty as a reason to disable or replace it rather than guessing.
  3. Open the key’s edit or permission view. Read every enabled permission and the displayed IP-access setting. Do not infer that a hidden or unavailable control is enabled.
  4. Compare each enabled item with the bot’s actual calls. A reporting process should not retain trading permission; an order bot should not retain withdrawal permission.
  5. Check the product scope. Spot/Margin, Futures and account-management features are not interchangeable, and eligibility can depend on account mode or when the key was created.

App path

  1. Sign in to the Binance app and use its search function for API Management, the route described in Binance’s security guidance.
  2. Select the key, verify its label and inspect permissions and IP restrictions. Avoid taking screenshots that show the key, secret or QR material.
  3. Make only the smallest required change, authenticate with the security checks requested by Binance, and confirm that the resulting status is saved.

If the menu or labels differ, use the current in-product help link rather than a third-party walkthrough. Binance changes account navigation and security controls, while the underlying principle remains least privilege.

How to change Binance API key permissions safely

Disable trading when the bot only reads

Turn off the trading permission for a monitor, tax exporter, portfolio viewer or alerting service. Keep only the account-data access it needs, plus a user-data stream if it subscribes to live account events. If the software stops working after this change, inspect which endpoint failed and consult the official endpoint-security documentation or the vendor’s requirements before restoring access. Do not enable trading as a generic fix.

Keep trading narrowly scoped

An order bot needs trading access for the product it actually trades. It does not automatically need Futures access because it trades Spot, nor Spot/Margin access because it trades Futures. If the bot has separate read and execution components, use separate keys where practical. This makes it possible to revoke order placement without also breaking a monitoring system and limits the damage if one credential leaks.

Do not grant withdrawals to a trading bot

Trading and withdrawal are different risks. A bot that submits or cancels orders ordinarily has no reason to move assets out of the account. Binance’s help guidance states that withdrawal permission requires IP access restrictions; that requirement is not a reason to grant withdrawals or an indication that the permission is safe. Leave it disabled unless a narrowly defined, separately reviewed process genuinely needs it.

Save, then test the intended boundary

  1. Save the changed permissions and complete Binance’s requested authentication.
  2. Run a harmless read operation or paper/sandbox check if the bot supports one.
  3. Confirm that the bot can perform its intended function and cannot perform a function you deliberately removed. For example, a monitor should still read balances but have no path to submit an order.
  4. Update the bot’s internal credential inventory and the owner’s runbook without copying the secret into either document.

IP allowlisting and Binance key rules

An IP allowlist limits where a key can authenticate. If the bot runs on a server with stable public IP addresses, enter only those addresses in the key’s trusted-IP field and remove old hosts after a migration. A dynamic home connection, rotating cloud egress or shared machine makes allowlisting harder to maintain; document the actual egress addresses before enabling it.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Binance’s 20 March 2025 API-key help page says that, under its stated security rules, an unrestricted-IP HMAC key is limited to reading. The same guidance identifies adding IPv4 restrictions or using a self-generated key type such as Ed25519 or RSA as options for enabling other permissions. The exact choices depend on the key and account, so read the live prompt rather than assuming that changing the algorithm alone grants access.

Withdrawal permission requires IP access restrictions according to that help page. Keep the allowlist as a containment measure, not as justification for enabling withdrawals.

The dated 30-day trading rule

In an 8 July 2021 announcement, Binance described Spot and Margin trading permission on a key without whitelisted IP addresses as expiring after 30 days. The announcement also said that this expiry did not apply under that rule when IP addresses were whitelisted. This is a dated policy statement, not a promise that every current key behaves identically. Check the warning and expiry language shown in your account before relying on a 30-day period, and do not generalize it to withdrawals, Futures or every permission.

When symbol whitelisting is available

Binance documents an API Trading Symbol Whitelist feature for normal and managed sub-accounts. It can constrain Spot/Margin API trading to selected pairs, with up to 30 pairs per sub-account API in the 18 January 2022 support documentation.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

This is an account-management feature with limited scope. The documentation does not establish it as a universal setting for a personal main-account key or for Futures. Do not promise that a normal main-account bot can use a symbol list; inspect the sub-account controls and product scope shown to you. Even when available, symbol whitelisting complements permission review: it does not replace turning off withdrawals, checking IP access or deleting a compromised credential.

When editing is not enough: revoke or delete the key

Reduce permissions when the credential is known, the owner is clear and there is no sign that it has escaped your control. Delete the key instead when the key or secret was pasted into an untrusted place, stored in a leaked log, included in malware, shared with a former operator, lost, or associated with activity you cannot explain. Permission editing may leave a copied credential in circulation; deletion invalidates that key and forces any legitimate service to be re-authenticated with a new one.

Normal deletion

  1. Open API Management on the web or in the app and identify the exact key.
  2. Stop the bot or put it into a safe mode so it does not repeatedly retry with a key you are removing.
  3. Choose the delete or revoke control, review the confirmation text, and complete the requested security verification.
  4. Check for the deleted status in the key list. Remove the old secret from the bot host, environment variables, secret stores and deployment history where your operating process permits.
  5. Create a replacement only if the service is still needed. Give it a descriptive label, the minimum permissions, and trusted IP addresses when supported. Restart the bot with the new credential and test it.

If you suspect compromise

Binance’s Developer Docs state: “If you notice unusual activity in your account, immediately revoke all the keys and contact Binance support.” Follow that instruction rather than waiting to identify which individual key was abused.

  1. From a trusted device, revoke all Binance API keys, not just the one used by the suspected bot.
  2. Contact Binance support through the official account route and report the unusual activity.
  3. Review orders, trades, withdrawals, deposits, login history and security settings for actions you did not authorize. The official sources do not establish that revoking a key automatically cancels existing orders or closes positions, so check open orders and positions separately and take the appropriate account action.
  4. Stop affected bots and investigate the host, deployment logs and secret storage. A new key is unsafe if the machine or repository that exposed the old one remains compromised.
  5. After containment, create fresh keys with minimum access and stable-IP restrictions where possible. Do not reuse the exposed secret or copy it into old configuration backups.

Binance’s security guidance also describes an app-based “Delete all API” flow for the scam situation it covers. The wording and location can change; use the current API Management controls displayed after you sign in.

Account and key caveats that can change the result

Portfolio Margin can remove Futures access permanently from old keys

Binance’s Portfolio Margin API support guidance says that enabling Portfolio Margin removes Futures permission from existing API keys and that the removal is permanent for those keys. If a Futures bot stops authenticating after a Portfolio Margin change, do not keep toggling unrelated permissions. Check the account mode and create a new eligible key if Binance’s current instructions require one.

Futures eligibility depends on history and account state

Binance’s key-creation help page notes that Futures permission may be unavailable when a key was created before Futures was activated or when Portfolio Margin is active. An absent Futures checkbox therefore does not prove that your bot is misconfigured; it may reflect the key’s history or the account mode.

Key type matters

The 2025 help guidance distinguishes unrestricted-IP HMAC behavior from options involving IPv4 restrictions and self-generated Ed25519 or RSA keys. Treat the key type, IP setting and permission combination as one security configuration. Record why a particular type was selected, and re-check the live rules whenever you rotate credentials.

Troubleshooting after a permission change

The bot can read but cannot place orders

First verify that the bot is supposed to place orders and that trading permission is enabled for the correct product. Then check the key’s IP restriction, the server’s current public IP, account eligibility and the endpoint required by the bot. If the bot uses Futures while the key was created before Futures activation or after a Portfolio Margin change, the key may be ineligible; follow Binance’s current key-creation guidance instead of broadening unrelated permissions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The bot works from one server but not another

Compare the source IPs with the allowlist. Cloud migrations, NAT gateways and failover hosts often change the public address even when the application configuration is unchanged. Add only the verified replacement address, remove the retired one, and test again. Do not respond by making a sensitive key unrestricted unless the live Binance rules and your risk review support that decision.

A read-only tool reports a permission error

Identify the exact endpoint and whether it needs account-data access or a user-data stream. Some tools combine monitoring with optional order features; disable those features or split the workload across keys rather than granting full trading access to every component.

Deletion broke several services

That usually indicates that multiple programs shared one credential. Keep the deleted key deleted if it was exposed. Inventory each service, issue separate replacement keys with distinct labels and permissions, and test them one at a time. Shared keys make future incident containment slower and obscure which application is responsible for a request.

A maintainable permission-review routine

Review API keys whenever a bot, host, product or account mode changes, and set a recurring calendar check for keys that remain active. For each key, maintain a non-secret record containing its owner, purpose, products, enabled permission categories, allowed IPs, creation date and last review date. Never store the secret in that record.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Remove keys with no current owner or business purpose.
  • Separate monitoring and execution wherever the bot architecture permits.
  • Keep withdrawal access off for trading automation.
  • Reconcile allowlisted IPs with the bot’s actual egress addresses after infrastructure changes.
  • Review open orders and positions separately after any suspected compromise because key revocation is not documented as an automatic order-cancellation mechanism.
  • Rotate credentials through a controlled change window, then verify that the old key is deleted and no deployment still references it.

Decision guide: edit, restrict or delete?

Situation Best action Reason
The key is identified, secure and used by a read-only tool with extra permissions Disable trading, withdrawals and unused product access; keep only required reading or stream access Least privilege fixes excess capability without interrupting the intended monitoring job
The bot places orders from a host with stable trusted IPs Keep the required trading permission and allowlist those IPs The key remains useful while authentication is limited by source location
The bot host is changing or has unknown egress addresses Resolve the network identity first; do not add broad addresses casually An inaccurate allowlist either blocks the bot or creates an unnecessarily wide trust boundary
The key or secret may have leaked, or activity is suspicious Revoke all keys, contact Binance support, investigate activity, then issue fresh minimum-privilege keys Editing permissions cannot reliably contain a copied credential
A sub-account uses a documented Spot/Margin symbol whitelist Use the selected-pair limit as an additional control, up to the documented 30 pairs per sub-account API It narrows trading symbols but does not replace permission, IP and compromise reviews

The safest default for a trading bot is a purpose-specific key with only the required read and trading access, no withdrawal permission, and a trusted-IP restriction whenever the account and key support it. Delete rather than edit when exposure is plausible.
