Changing an assistant’s “ask before acting” setting alone usually changes approval prompts, not the access already granted. If the assistant is using your phone’s camera, microphone, contacts, or location, change the operating system permission separately. Finally, review chats, memories, activity, and data held by the connected service because revoking future access does not automatically erase earlier copies.
There is no single universal “AI permissions” switch. A connected Gmail account, a Google Account authorization granted to a third-party app, and the Google app’s microphone permission are different records. Use the control that matches the access you want to remove, then verify each other layer that matters.

Understand the four permission controls before changing anything
“App permissions” can mean several independent controls. Identify the layer that supplies the access you want to stop; changing a different layer may have no effect on the connection you are concerned about.

The account matters as much as the app. A personal account and a work or school account can expose different services, and an administrator may control the work connection. Availability also depends on the assistant’s plan, country, device, product surface, and account eligibility.

Think of the controls as having different scopes. An approval selector usually affects one assistant account or app. Disconnecting an account affects that particular linked identity, while an administrator’s workspace policy can affect many users. A provider-side revocation can block an external app even if the assistant’s own integration page still appears unchanged. A phone permission is local to that device and may not affect access from the web.
Make an inventory before revoking access
Start in the assistant you actually use rather than relying on a general privacy switch. Write down each connected app, the account beside it, and the actions or information it can use. Note whether the account is personal or managed by an organization. This prevents you from disconnecting the wrong account while leaving the sensitive one active.
- Open the assistant on the web and on the phone if you use both. Their menus and available integrations can differ.
- Record the connected account identifier or email address, not just the app name.
- Look for access involving email, files, calendar events, contacts, photos, videos, location, device preferences, or messages.
- Decide whether you need to block future access, erase old information, or both. Those are separate jobs.
- If a work or school account is involved, check whether an administrator or workspace policy owns the connection before changing personal settings.
- Note whether you are trying to stop reading, stop taking actions, or stop both. An approval control may distinguish read actions from low-risk actions, but only a disconnection or provider revocation ends the linked account’s availability.
During a new connection or reconnection, read the provider authorization screen. OpenAI says that screen lists the requested services and permissions. An approval prompt inside the assistant and an authorization grant at the provider are separate decisions. Record the selected account before accepting; signing in to a second browser account can authorize a different mailbox or workspace than the one you intended.

Change the approval setting only when you want different prompts
For an eligible personal account, OpenAI’s current help instructions describe a path under Settings > Plugins > Permissions. Some accounts show Settings > Apps instead; use the Apps area when that is the label displayed to you. Depending on the app, account, and workspace, you may see choices such as Always ask, Allow read actions, or Allow low-risk actions.
An app-specific control can also appear under Settings > Apps or Settings > Plugins. Select the relevant app, then open the settings for the connected account. These controls determine when ChatGPT requests confirmation before using access that is still available. They do not, by themselves, remove the provider authorization.
If your objective is simply to add a confirmation step, choose the most restrictive prompt option offered and test it with a harmless request. If your objective is to stop access altogether, do not stop at this screen: continue to the account connection and provider controls below.
Disconnect the individual app-and-account connection
- Open ChatGPT and select Settings.
- Choose Apps or Plugins, depending on the label in your account.
- Select the app whose connection you want to stop.
- Open the connected account’s settings and choose Disconnect.
- Confirm the change, then return to the app list and make sure that account is no longer shown as connected.
Disconnecting the account stops future use through that individual connection. OpenAI explicitly states: “Changing an app permission does not disconnect the app or revoke access already granted to a provider account.” If the connection belongs to a managed workspace, an administrator may need to disable the workspace app; a personal setting may not override that policy.

Disconnecting one account does not necessarily disconnect another account for the same app. Check every listed identity, especially if you use separate personal and organizational logins. Also check whether the same provider authorization was granted to another assistant or external integration.

Review the provider screen before reconnecting
If you reconnect later, pause at the provider’s authorization page. Check the services and permissions requested, the account selected, and whether the request is for a personal or organizational account. Workspace approval can be a separate step from connecting the account in ChatGPT, so both controls may need review.
Do not assume a familiar app name describes the full scope. The authorization page is where the provider identifies the requested services. Decline or cancel if the requested scope is broader than the task requires, then look for a narrower integration or a read-only option.
Gemini: use Connected Apps, not just a general activity switch
Disconnect an app on the Gemini web app
- Open the Gemini web app and open Settings and help.
- Choose Connected Apps.
- If that entry is not visible, look under Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps when that section is available.
- Review the apps listed for the current account and Gemini surface.
- Select the app you want to stop using and choose the available disconnect or remove control.
- Confirm, then revisit the list to verify that the app is no longer connected.
Google says the list and menu can vary by Gemini app, device, country, account, and other product factors. An app missing from your list may therefore reflect availability rules rather than a failed search. Check the account currently signed in and the surface you are using before assuming that no connection exists.
Look for the same integration on another Gemini surface if you use both the web experience and a mobile experience. A menu difference does not prove that an authorization is absent; it may only mean that the feature is not exposed in that particular interface.
Know what a Gemini Connected App may exchange
Google’s Gemini privacy documentation says Connected Apps can exchange Gemini chat information, device or preference information, location, and content such as emails, files, calendar events, photos, and videos, depending on the connected service and feature. The exact set is not identical for every app. Read the app’s own description and the connection prompt to determine the scope for your account.
That exchange can be more than a one-time sign-in. Depending on the feature, the assistant may use context from a conversation together with content supplied by the connected service. If you are reviewing an integration for privacy, consider both the categories of account content and the conversational context that may be sent along with a request.
Do not treat Keep Activity as a universal disconnect switch
Some Android Connected Apps, including Phone, Messages, WhatsApp, and device assistance, can remain available when Keep Activity is off. Google Workspace may be unavailable in that state. Turning Keep Activity off therefore does not universally disconnect Connected Apps. Use the Connected Apps control for the specific app, and use activity controls separately if you also want to limit or delete assistant history.

In other words, activity retention and app availability are related but distinct decisions. Turning off activity may change what is saved in Gemini Apps Activity, while a connected app may still be able to provide information to an enabled feature. Review both settings when you want to limit future use and reduce stored history.

Android device permissions used by Gemini
Account connections and phone permissions are independent. Google states that Gemini is hosted by the Google app on Android, even when the Gemini app is installed. To block device-level access such as the microphone or camera, change the Google app’s permission rather than only disconnecting a cloud app.
- Touch and hold the Google app icon.
- Tap App info.
- Tap Permissions.
- Select a permission such as Camera, Microphone, Contacts, or Location.
- Choose Don’t allow, or select the least-access option offered by your Android version.
Permission names, choices, and consequences vary by device manufacturer and Android version. Blocking a device permission can stop a particular feature from working while leaving an account connection intact. If your goal is to stop access to Gmail, Drive, Calendar, or another cloud service, return to Gemini’s Connected Apps or the Google Account authorization controls.
This route controls the Google app because that is where Gemini is hosted on Android. Changing permissions on a separately installed Gemini icon may not expose the control you need. After changing a permission, test only the feature affected by that permission; a successful voice interaction, for example, does not tell you whether a cloud-account authorization was also removed.
Remove a third-party app from your Google Account
There is a second Google control for an external app that received authorization through a Google Account prompt. This is useful when the app is not merely a Gemini Connected App, or when you want to revoke the provider-side OAuth grant directly.
- Open Google’s connected-apps page for your account.
- Select the relevant third-party app.
- Choose See details.
- Select Remove access.
- Choose Confirm.
Google says that revoking this access prevents the third-party app from accessing the Google Account data covered by the authorization. It does not guarantee deletion of information the app already received. Contact the service separately and request deletion when that is required by its privacy process.
Use the account that originally approved the app. If several Google accounts are signed in, the connected-app page for one account will not show authorizations belonging to another. Google’s wording is precise: after access is revoked, the app cannot access the covered account data anymore, but the third party may still hold information it received earlier.
What remains after you revoke access
Revocation is a forward-looking control. It prevents new retrieval or actions through the connection, but it is not an automatic eraser.

- OpenAI says disconnecting a Google app does not automatically delete existing ChatGPT conversations or saved memories.
- Google says disconnecting a Gemini Connected App does not delete Gemini Apps Activity.
- Google also says deleting Gemini Apps Activity does not delete data that another connected app already received.
- A third-party service may retain copies of emails, files, calendar details, photos, or other content previously shared with it.
After disconnecting, review the assistant’s chat history, saved memories, and activity controls. Then inspect the connected service’s own account and deletion settings. If the service does not provide a self-service deletion option, contact its support or privacy channel and identify the account and data you want removed.

Keep evidence of what you changed if the account is managed or sensitive: note the account, app, date, and confirmation shown. This does not delete data, but it helps an administrator or the service’s privacy team identify the exact authorization and any prior transfers.

Use a short verification pass instead of assuming that a confirmation message covered every layer.
- Refresh the assistant’s app list and confirm that the specific account is disconnected.
- Open the provider’s connected-app or security page and confirm that the authorization is removed when you revoked it there.
- On Android, revisit Google app > App info > Permissions and verify the device permission state.
- Try a harmless request that would previously have required the connection. The assistant should ask you to reconnect or report that the app is unavailable, rather than silently retrieving new data.
- Check whether old chats, memories, or activity still appear. Their presence does not prove that revocation failed; it usually means that deletion is a separate step.
- If the integration reappears after signing in, identify whether you accidentally reauthorized it, switched accounts, or are seeing a workspace-managed connection.
Test from the same surface and account you used when making the change. A web session can retain a stale page until refreshed, and a second signed-in account can make a connection appear to persist when it belongs to a different identity.
Common failure cases and the right fix
The assistant still asks for approval
An approval prompt can mean the app remains connected but requires confirmation. Inspect the connected-app list and provider authorization, not only the approval default. If the app is still listed, disconnect the specific account.
The app is not listed in Connected Apps
Confirm the signed-in account, device, country, and Gemini or ChatGPT surface. Google warns that Connected Apps listings vary by those factors. For a Google Account authorization made through an external prompt, use the Google Account connected-app controls even if Gemini does not show the service.
Old messages or memories are still visible
That is consistent with successful revocation. Disconnecting prevents future access but does not automatically delete existing assistant conversations, saved memories, or activity. Use the relevant history and memory deletion controls, then request deletion from the connected service if it stored a copy.
A work account cannot be disconnected
The organization may manage the app or require administrator approval. Ask the workspace administrator to disable the integration or revoke the organization’s authorization. Do not assume that changing a personal account setting can override an administrator policy.

Android’s permission page controls the Google app’s use of hardware and local data. It does not remove a cloud-account link. Restore only the device permission you need, then separately disconnect the relevant Connected App or Google Account authorization.
The same app appears connected after I removed it
Check for a second account, a second assistant surface, or an organization-managed connection. Removing one personal account entry does not remove another identity’s authorization. Recheck the provider’s connected-app page for every account you use.

Account, region, and date qualifications
These menus are not permanent product contracts. OpenAI’s “Managing app permissions in ChatGPT” help page was marked updated 11 days before October 16, 2026. Google’s Gemini Apps Privacy Hub was last updated September 24, 2026; other Google support pages used for the steps were accessed October 13, 2026. Labels and availability can change with an app update, plan, country, account type, workspace policy, or device version.
The documented procedures here cover ChatGPT, Gemini, Android’s Google app permissions, and Google Account controls for third-party access. Other assistants may use different navigation, so do not apply these menu names to another product without checking that product’s current help documentation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does changing ChatGPT’s app permission revoke access?
No. OpenAI says changing an app permission changes approval behavior but does not disconnect the app or revoke authorization already granted to the provider account. Open Settings, select Apps or Plugins, choose the app and connected account, and use Disconnect.
How do I disconnect an app from Gemini?
In the Gemini web app, open Settings and help, choose Connected Apps, select the app, and use its disconnect control. If Connected Apps is absent, check Personal Intelligence > Connected Apps when that route is available. Listings vary by account, device, country, and Gemini surface.
Will disconnecting an app delete old chats or memories?

Why can’t I find the app I want to disconnect?
Verify the signed-in account and check the correct assistant surface. Google says Connected Apps lists vary by app, device, country, and other factors. If authorization came from a separate Google Account prompt, use the Google Account connected-app controls instead.
