The safest way to handle an unfamiliar app connected to your Google Account is to identify the connection type first, inspect the permissions, and revoke only the access you no longer trust or need. Open your Google Account’s linked-apps page, filter the list, select the service, review its details, and use the removal control for that connection. Revoking access blocks future access, but it does not necessarily delete information the developer copied earlier.
That last distinction matters. “Third-party access” can mean an app reading Google data, a Sign in with Google connection, or a link between Google and another account. Each has a different consequence when removed.

What “third-party access” means in Google Account settings
A third-party connection is an authorization you gave an outside app or service to interact with your Google Account or to use Google as part of its sign-in or account-linking features. Google says an app is limited to the data and services you authorize; it should not automatically receive everything in your account.
The permissions shown in the account settings can fall into several categories:

- [Deep Bass with Clear Vocals] High-performance drivers produce punchy bass while keeping vocals clean and detailed for everyday listening.
- Basic profile information: information such as your name, profile image, or email address used to identify you in the service.
- Access to Google data: permission to view or copy information from specified Google products. The products and scope should be listed in the authorization details.
- Permission to manage data: a more powerful scope that can allow an app to create, edit, or otherwise manage information, depending on the Google product and the authorization you approved.
- Sign in with Google: a login relationship that lets you use your Google Account to sign in to another app.
- Linked accounts: a connection between your Google Account and an account held by another service, often to enable a particular integration.
Do not treat every unfamiliar-looking entry as proof of compromise. A service may use a parent-company name, a developer name, or a product name that differs from the name you remember. Check the details and your account history before removing it. Google’s guidance is to grant access only to third parties you trust.
Open the linked-apps list for the correct Google Account
- Sign in to the account you want to check. If you use several Google Accounts in the same browser, verify the profile image, email address, or account switcher before changing anything. Removing access from one account does not remove it from your other accounts.
- Open the Google Account linked-apps page. This is the settings area where Google lists connected apps and services. The page layout and labels can change, so follow the current labels Google displays rather than relying on an old screenshot.
- Use the available filters. Separate entries for Sign in with Google, access to Google Account data, and linked accounts. Filtering prevents you from applying the wrong removal action to a connection that only looks similar.
- Review the full list. Look for services you no longer use, entries you cannot identify, and permissions that are broader than the service appears to require. Keep a note of each entry you investigate so you can check related accounts or contact a developer if necessary.
Inspect an unfamiliar connection before removing it
Check the service identity
Select the entry and read its name, developer information, and connection type. Compare it with apps you have installed, subscriptions you use, websites where you chose Google sign-in, and integrations you deliberately configured. A familiar service can appear under a different legal or developer name, so the details are more useful than the short list label.
Read the named Google products and data
For data access, note which Google products are named and whether the permission is limited to viewing or copying information or includes management actions. An app that only needs an identity profile for sign-in should not automatically need broad access to unrelated data. Treat a permission to manage data as a higher-impact decision than a basic profile permission.
Ask whether the connection is still needed
Consider the feature you receive in exchange for the connection. Removing a calendar, storage, mail, contacts, or other integration can stop that feature even when the app itself is legitimate. If you recognize the service but no longer use the feature, revocation is usually appropriate. If you cannot identify the entry, investigate the service context before deciding.
Never give a third-party app your Google Account password. Google Account Help states: “Do not share your Google Account password on a third-party app.” A legitimate authorization should use Google’s authorization flow instead of asking you to type the password into the outside service.
Use a permission-by-permission decision
Rather than asking only whether an app looks familiar, ask four questions for every entry:
- Who is accessing whose information? A Sign in with Google item primarily connects your identity for login. A data-access item lets the outside service use specified Google information. A linked account connects two service accounts for an integration.
- What Google product and data are named? Write down the products shown in the details. A permission is easier to evaluate when you compare it with the feature you remember enabling.
- What level of action is allowed? Viewing or copying is different from managing information. Management access deserves closer scrutiny because it can support changes, not merely display data.
- What will stop if you remove it? The answer may be automatic sign-in, synchronization, or another integration feature. Knowing the consequence prevents an avoidable interruption.
This approach also helps distinguish an unnecessary connection from a malicious one. A legitimate service can have access you no longer want, while an unfamiliar service may turn out to be a tool you authorized under a different name. Documenting the reason for each decision gives you a record if you later need to reconnect a service.

Remove the connection that matches the problem
For third-party access to Google Account data
- Select the app or service in the linked-apps list.
- Choose See details (or the equivalent details control shown for that entry).
- Read the products and permissions one more time.
- Choose Remove access.
- Confirm the removal when Google asks.
Repeat those steps for each data-access entry you have determined is unnecessary or suspicious. Removal prevents the app from obtaining new data through that authorization. It does not by itself close your account with the developer or erase information the developer already received.
For Sign in with Google
Remove the Sign in with Google connection when you want to stop using your Google Account as the automatic sign-in method for that service. The service may still retain its own account and data. Before removing the link, make sure you have another sign-in method, such as a password or an alternative verified email, if you intend to keep using the service. Otherwise you may be locked out until the service’s account-recovery process is completed.
For a linked account
Removing a linked-account relationship can disable the feature that depended on the link. It does not necessarily delete the account held by the other service, and it does not mean that Google will erase data stored there. If the integration is important, check the other service’s settings first so you know how to reconnect or export anything you still need.
Connection types and their consequences
| Connection shown by Google | What is connected | What removal normally stops | Does removal erase existing third-party data? |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sign in with Google | Your Google Account is used to sign in to an outside app. | Automatic Google-based sign-in for that app. | No. The outside app can keep its account and data. |
| Third-party access to Google Account data | The app receives the specific Google products and permissions listed during authorization. | Future access through that authorization. | Not necessarily. Ask the developer to delete copies it already holds. |
| Linked account | Google and an account at another service are connected for an integration. | Features that depend on the account link. | No. Removing the link is not the same as deleting the other account. |
The practical rule is to select the connection type that corresponds to your concern. A Sign in with Google link is not the same as permission to read Google data, and deleting a linked account relationship is not a request to erase the third-party account.

Revocation changes the authorization going forward. It prevents the app from using that Google connection to obtain new information, but it cannot reach into the developer’s systems and reliably remove data that was copied before you revoked access. Google’s guidance therefore distinguishes access removal from data deletion.
If you believe an app already copied messages, files, contacts, profile information, or other data, contact the developer and request deletion. Use the developer’s privacy or support channel, identify the account involved, specify the data you want deleted, and keep the confirmation for your records. You may also need to delete the account or content directly in the third-party service; removing Google access alone does not perform those actions.
A practical deletion-request outline
After revoking access, send a concise request that names the third-party account, the Google Account used to authorize it, and the categories of information you want removed. Ask whether the developer has retained copies, backups, or information associated with the integration. The developer—not Google’s linked-apps control—must handle data held in the outside service.

Keep the access-removal confirmation and the developer’s response together. If you later reconnect the service, review the new authorization carefully because reconnecting can create a fresh permission.
How to decide whether an entry is suspicious
Use several signals together instead of relying on the name alone:
- You do not recognize the service, developer, or reason it would need a Google connection.
- The entry belongs to a service you stopped using and no longer need.
- The listed Google product does not match the feature you remember enabling.
- The permission includes management or editing capability when you expected only sign-in or viewing.
- You received an unexpected authorization notice or saw other activity you cannot explain.
Do not remove every unfamiliar-looking entry automatically. First verify whether a browser extension, mobile app, workplace tool, family member’s setup, or an account migration created the connection. If the service is legitimate but the permission is excessive, look for a narrower integration or remove and reconnect it with only the scope you require.
Common review mistakes to avoid
- Removing the wrong category: deleting a Sign in with Google link will not necessarily revoke separate data access, and removing data access will not necessarily change how you sign in.
- Assuming revocation is erasure: the authorization can end while the outside service retains information already copied.
- Forgetting other Google Accounts: checking one profile does not audit the others you use.
- Sharing a password to “verify” ownership: use Google’s authorization flow and never type your Google password into an outside app.
- Ignoring the feature impact: a legitimate integration can stop synchronizing or signing you in as soon as its connection is removed.
If you suspect someone else accessed your account
App review is one part of an incident response. If you think another person is signed in, Google advises changing your Google Account password immediately. Use a new password that is not used anywhere else, then change reused passwords on apps and websites that shared the old password.
- Change the Google Account password from the account-security settings.
- Change reused passwords on connected services and other sites.
- Return to the linked-apps page and remove unfamiliar or unnecessary connections.
- Review unfamiliar devices and recent account-security activity for signs that another session or recovery method was added.
- Run Google Security Checkup and follow its personalized recommendations.
Security Checkup specifically includes reviewing which apps can use your account information. Google Account Help summarizes the purpose this way: “To better protect sensitive information, review which apps can use your account info and remove the ones you don’t need.”
If the password change reveals other unfamiliar activity, handle the password and device review first, then continue the app audit. Removing an app connection is important, but it should not distract from securing an account that may still be under someone else’s control.
Use Security Checkup for a broader review
Security Checkup is useful after you have handled a suspicious app because it provides account-specific recommendations rather than a generic checklist. Follow its prompts for app access, devices, sign-in activity, recovery options, and other security settings that Google flags for your account.

Google’s Advanced Protection program is intended for people at high risk of targeted online attacks, not as a required step for routine app cleanup. It limits third-party app access and requires sign-in with a passkey or security key. Google says the program is free, although a security key may cost money if you choose to use one.
Recommended Free Tools
Advanced Protection does not inspect or revoke existing connections for you. You still complete the review through Google Account settings. Consider it a stronger, ongoing account-protection option after you have cleaned up access, especially if your work, public profile, or circumstances make targeted attacks a realistic concern.
No physical product is needed to review or revoke an app connection. A security key is an optional part of a broader protection program, not a tool that lists permissions or performs removal.
Troubleshooting common review problems
The entry is not where you expected
Switch to the Google Account that actually authorized the service and check the connection-type filters. A Sign in with Google relationship may appear separately from data access, and a linked account may be listed in its own category.
You removed access and a feature stopped working
That is an expected consequence when the feature depended on the connection. Reauthorize the service only if you still trust it and need the feature. For Sign in with Google, confirm that an alternative sign-in method exists before removing the link.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
The app still has your information after removal
Revocation blocks future access; it is not a deletion command. Contact the developer with a deletion request and use the service’s own privacy and account controls to remove stored data.
Best Value
The labels differ from these instructions
Google changes interface labels and filter presentation over time and across account types. Look for the current linked-apps or third-party-connections area and choose the details and removal control associated with the specific connection. The underlying decision remains the same: identify what is connected, understand the permission, then remove only the authorization you no longer want.
You are unsure whether to remove a recognized service
Record the feature that uses the connection and the Google products named in its details. If you still need that feature, look for a narrower permission or an alternative sign-in method before removing anything. If you no longer use the service, removal is usually simpler; just remember that the outside account and its stored data may remain.
A compact review checklist
- Confirm the correct Google Account before making changes.
- Separate Sign in with Google, data access, and linked-account entries.
- Read the named Google products and permission level.
- Verify the service context instead of judging by an unfamiliar name alone.
- Remove access through the control for that connection type and confirm.
- Expect dependent features or automatic sign-in to stop.
- Ask the developer to delete data that may already have been copied.
- Change passwords and review devices if there are signs of compromise.
- Run Security Checkup for personalized follow-up actions.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does removing an app from my Google Account delete my account with that app?
No. Removing a Google connection stops the relevant authorization, but the third-party account and data can remain. Delete the outside account or content through the developer’s own controls if that is what you want.

Not necessarily. Revocation blocks future access through the connection. Contact the developer and request deletion of information it already received.
What is the difference between Sign in with Google and data access?
Sign in with Google primarily provides an automatic login relationship. Data access gives the app the specific Google products and permissions listed during authorization. They appear as different connection types and can have different removal effects.
Should I remove every app I do not immediately recognize?
No. Check the developer name, account history, installed apps, integrations, and listed permissions first. Remove entries you cannot justify or no longer need, but do not assume an unfamiliar label proves compromise.
What should I do if I think someone else accessed my account?
Change your Google Account password immediately, change reused passwords on related services, review unfamiliar devices and app connections, and run Security Checkup.

No. Review and removal happen in Google Account settings. A security key is an optional sign-in method within Advanced Protection for people at higher risk; Google says the program is free, while the key itself may cost money.
The Bottom Line
Open the linked-apps page for the correct Google Account, filter the connection types, inspect each service’s named products and permission level, and remove only the authorization you no longer trust or need. Expect dependent features or automatic sign-in to stop, and remember that revocation does not automatically erase data already copied by the developer. If there are broader compromise signs, change passwords, review devices, and run Security Checkup.
