The permission description—not just the app name—tells you whether it can read message bodies, view metadata, send mail, modify messages, or permanently delete email. You can choose Remove access to stop that authorization. If Gemini or another Google AI agent is separately allowed to use the connection, stop that agent under the Agent access controls as well.
Revoking access stops future requests made through that Google authorization, but it does not necessarily erase copies the service already received. Data retained on the AI provider’s servers, and deletion of the provider account itself, must be handled through that provider’s privacy and deletion controls.

What Gmail access can give an AI tool
Connecting an AI service to Gmail is an authorization decision, not a single yes-or-no switch. Google presents the service with one or more permission scopes. Each scope defines a set of information the service can see or actions it can take on your behalf.

An AI assistant might need to find a message, summarize a thread, draft a reply, send that reply, apply a label, or automate a workflow. Those jobs do not all require the same level of access. A tool that only needs message headers should not automatically receive permission to read every message body. A tool that drafts mail may not need the ability to send it. A service that promises an occasional outgoing notification should be able to explain why it requests broad access to the entire mailbox.

Evaluate five separate questions:
- What data is exposed? Is the tool seeing metadata, message text, attachments, settings, or all of them?
- What actions are possible? Can it only read, or can it send, change, label, archive, or permanently delete mail?
- Does the scope fit the feature? The narrowest permission that supports the stated feature is preferable.
- Which connection are you controlling? A third-party app authorization and Google AI-agent access can be separate controls.
- What happens after access? The provider may copy data to its own servers, retain it, expose it to personnel under its policies, or require a separate deletion request.
Google classifies Gmail API scopes as non-sensitive, sensitive, or restricted. That classification affects an app’s verification obligations; it does not prove that the app is trustworthy or that the requested access is appropriate for its feature.
Before you inspect permissions
Use the account that actually contains the mailbox
Sign in to the Google Account whose Gmail inbox you want to check. If you use personal, school, work, or multiple Google Accounts in the same browser, verify the account avatar and address before changing anything. The linked-apps list is account-specific. Removing an authorization from one account does not remove the same app’s authorization from another account.
Do not give the AI service your Google password
Use Google’s authorization screen and account controls. Google’s direct instruction is: “Do not share your Google Account password on a third-party app or service.” A service that asks you to type your Google password into its own form is not using the normal authorization flow and should be treated as a serious warning sign.
Record what you are about to change
If the connection supports an important workflow, note the app name, the Google Account used, and the feature that depends on it. Removing access can stop automations, mailbox search, drafting, or sending. This record makes it easier to reconnect only the needed account later—or to identify which workflow failed.
How to see which apps have access to Gmail
- Sign in to the correct Google Account. Open the account that contains the Gmail mailbox you want to review.
- Open Google Account settings. Go to the area for linked apps, third-party access, or connections to your account. Google occasionally changes the exact navigation labels, so look for the page listing apps and services connected to your account.
- Find the AI service. Search or scroll through the connected-app list. If filters are available, filter for access to a specific Google product or for other account access to narrow the list.
- Select the app and choose See details. Read the listed Google products and the level of access, rather than relying on the app’s name or logo.
- Match the details to the feature you use. Ask whether the tool needs message bodies, only headers, sending ability, editing ability, or deletion ability. If the description is broader than the feature requires, pause before leaving the connection active.
The page may show an app that no longer works, an old experiment, or a service connected under a different name. Treat each entry as an authorization to investigate. If you cannot identify an app or its purpose, verify the developer through information you independently trust before deciding whether to keep it.
How to interpret Gmail permission scopes
The scope name is useful, but the full description is what matters. The following comparison reflects Google’s Gmail API definitions.

“Metadata only” does not mean “no privacy impact.” Headers can include sender and recipient addresses, subject lines, dates, mailing-list identifiers, and routing information. Labels can reveal projects, health matters, finances, or other categories you use to organize mail. Conversely, a read scope can expose the actual text and attachments in messages, which is a materially greater disclosure.
Sending permission is also different from reading permission. A tool may be unable to read old messages yet still send a message as you if it has gmail.send. Conversely, a read-only assistant may see sensitive correspondence but cannot send from the account through that scope. Judge both data exposure and action capability.
How to decide whether a permission is justified
Start with the promised task
Write down the smallest operation the AI tool is supposed to perform. Examples include “find invoices from this month,” “summarize a selected thread,” “create a draft reply,” or “send a daily status message.” Then compare that operation with the scope shown in Google Account settings.
Use a least-access test
- A summary feature that searches and reads messages needs access to message content, but it should explain why it also needs sending or deletion.
- A notification tool that sends one message may need sending permission, but broad mailbox reading is difficult to justify unless it must inspect data to construct the notification.
- A label-management workflow may need modification rights, but permanent deletion is not implied by ordinary message changes.
- An analytics dashboard based on headers may be able to work with metadata instead of full message bodies; confirm what the provider actually uses.
Ask for an explanation when the scope is broader
Look for the provider’s permission rationale, privacy policy, and data-use disclosures. Ask what information is transmitted, whether it is used to train or improve models, who can access it, how long it is retained, and how you can request deletion. The Google authorization screen tells you what access is technically requested; it does not answer every question about the provider’s internal handling.
Treat an unverified warning as a pause, not a verdict
Google may label an app unverified because it is still in development or limited to an organization. An unverified label alone does not establish that the app is malicious. It does mean you should verify the developer, confirm that the feature is necessary, and avoid granting access casually. If you cannot establish who operates the service or why it needs the requested scope, do not proceed.

- Open the linked-apps or third-party access page while signed in to the affected Google Account.
- Select the AI app and open See details so you can confirm you have the right connection.
- Choose Remove access.
- Read the confirmation message and confirm the removal.
- Return to the connected-app list and verify that the entry is gone or no longer has the previous authorization.
Removal ends access through that Google authorization. The app may stop searching Gmail, creating drafts, applying changes, or sending messages. It does not automatically close your separate account with the AI provider, cancel a subscription, or erase copies of information the provider already received.

If the app reappears after you use it again, that is normally a new authorization request. Read the new screen carefully instead of assuming the previous decision carries over.
How to stop Gemini or another AI agent from using a linked app
Google documents a separate control for agent access. An app can remain linked to your Google Account while a Google AI agent is prevented from interacting with it, or the reverse can occur.
- Open your Google Account’s connected-app controls.
- Use the Agent access filter, where available, to find the app that an AI agent can use.
- Select the relevant connection and choose Stop using for the agent.
- Confirm that the agent is no longer permitted to use the app.
Stop using the agent does not itself disconnect the linked account. If you also want to end the third-party app’s Google authorization, use that app’s separate Remove access control. Check both areas when your goal is a complete shutdown.
What revocation does—and does not—do
What it stops
- Future requests made through the revoked Google authorization.
- The app’s ability to use that connection for Gmail actions such as reading, sending, or modifying messages, according to the scopes that were removed.
- The specific Google AI-agent interaction when you stop agent access.
What it does not guarantee
- Deletion of message content, metadata, or attachments already copied to the provider’s servers.
- Removal of logs, backups, derived data, or model-related records that the provider’s policy allows it to retain.
- Closure of your separate account at the AI service.
- Cancellation of a paid plan or other non-Google service relationship.
Google explains that a third party may save shared data on its own servers, outside Google’s protection. Retention periods depend on the developer’s policy. To address earlier copies, use the provider’s privacy dashboard or deletion process, or contact the provider and request deletion of the Gmail data it received. Ask for confirmation and keep a record of the request.
After you revoke access: a practical cleanup checklist
- Check Gmail activity. Look for unexpected sent messages, new filters, labels, forwarding settings, or recent account events. These checks do not replace revocation, but they can reveal actions that occurred before you removed access.
- Change the AI service separately. Sign in to the provider and remove the Gmail integration, delete stored mailbox content if the service offers that control, and close the provider account if that is your intention.
- Review other Google Accounts. Repeat the inspection for every account where you may have connected the same tool.
- Tell affected collaborators. If the tool sent or modified shared-workspace mail, notify colleagues or administrators and restore legitimate filters or labels.
- Reconnect narrowly if necessary. If a workflow is still valuable, reconnect only after confirming the account, the developer, the exact scopes, and the provider’s retention terms.
Troubleshooting common permission problems
The app is not listed
Confirm that you are signed in to the right Google Account and that you are looking at connected apps rather than a different security page. If the feature uses a Google AI agent, check the Agent access filter separately. Some integrations may use a workspace administrator’s control or a different account, so a personal account’s list may not show them.
Removing access broke the feature
That is expected when the feature depends on Gmail authorization. Decide whether the workflow is worth restoring. If it is, reconnect through Google’s authorization flow and reject any scope that is not required. If the tool cannot operate without a broader scope than its function appears to need, ask the provider for an explanation or choose a different workflow.

The provider says it still has my messages
Revocation prevents future access; it does not promise deletion of historical copies. Use the provider’s deletion controls or contact its privacy team. The provider’s retention policy determines whether backups, logs, or derived data remain and for how long.
I stopped the agent, but the app still works
Stopping agent access affects the AI agent connection only. The underlying third-party app authorization may still be active. Return to the app’s connection details and choose Remove access if you want to end the app’s Google Account access too.
The authorization screen uses unfamiliar wording
Open the detailed permission description and identify the Google product, scope, and actions. Do not infer capabilities from marketing language such as “smart inbox” or “automation.” If the requested access cannot be mapped to a feature you need, cancel and verify the provider before continuing.
A repeatable review schedule
Review connected apps when you install an AI integration, when the tool adds a new feature, after an ownership or privacy-policy change, and whenever you stop using the service. A quarterly check is a practical reminder for people with many integrations, while a work or school administrator may set a different schedule.
During each review, confirm the account, app identity, scopes, agent access, provider retention terms, and the business reason for keeping the connection. Remove abandoned experiments and integrations that have not been used. Fewer active authorizations make future investigations easier and reduce the number of services that can act on your behalf.

Frequently asked questions
Can ChatGPT or another AI read my Gmail automatically?
No. An AI service needs an authorization that grants the relevant Gmail scope, or another integration configured by an administrator. Check the connected-app details for the specific Google Account; a name appearing in an AI product does not by itself prove that it can read your mailbox.
Does gmail.metadata expose the text of my emails?
Google defines that scope as access to message metadata such as labels and headers, not message bodies. Those details can still reveal substantial information about your correspondence and activity.
Will removing access delete data the AI provider already received?
Not necessarily. Removal stops the Google authorization, while copies already stored by the provider are governed by its retention and deletion policies. Request deletion from the provider.
Is an unverified app automatically unsafe?
No. Google notes that an app can be unverified because it is in development or restricted to an organization. The warning should prompt you to verify the developer and the need for access before granting it.

Can I limit an existing authorization without removing it?
Google’s linked-app controls generally let you review and remove an authorization; they do not necessarily provide a way to edit individual Gmail scopes after approval. If the app requests too much access, remove it and reconnect only if the new authorization screen offers narrower scopes.
Does stopping a Google AI agent disconnect the third-party app?
No. Agent access and the app’s Google Account authorization are separate. Use Stop using for the agent, and Remove access on the app connection if you also want to disconnect the third-party service.
