First identify the affected project, targets, configurations, schemes, .xcconfig files, entitlements, and scripts. Then determine the setting’s scope and precedence, confirm the value in Xcode’s Resolved column, inspect scheme actions, and run the affected build or tests on a supported Xcode version. A clean textual merge only proves that the files can be combined; it does not prove that the resulting app builds, tests, archives, or signs as intended.
What an Xcode project diff can change
An Xcode project file encodes the structure that the IDE and build system use to assemble an app. Apple’s project model includes references to source files and resources, groups, project-level build configurations, targets, and executable environments. A pull request that changes project.pbxproj can therefore alter more than the order in which files appear.

- File and resource membership: a source file, asset catalog, framework, or resource can be added to or removed from a target.
- Target structure: a target can gain or lose build phases, dependencies, product settings, or linked libraries.
- Build configurations: Debug, Release, and custom configurations can receive different compiler, linker, packaging, or signing values.
- Executable environments: schemes can select what is built, run, tested, profiled, or archived.
That is why a reviewer should not dismiss a large generated-looking diff automatically. Reordering or identifier changes may be harmless in one case and may accompany a real target-membership or build-setting change in another. Read the complete pull-request change and connect each edit to an expected behavior.
Start with the pull request inventory
Begin with the pull request summary and changed-file list, before opening individual lines. The file names tell you where to look, but they do not establish the effect of a change.

| Changed item | Questions to answer |
|---|---|
project.pbxproj or another project configuration file |
Did a target, build phase, file reference, dependency, configuration, or setting change? Is the edit limited to generated identifiers or does it change membership and values? |
.xcconfig |
Which project or target includes it? Does it include another configuration file? Is the assignment conditional on configuration, SDK, architecture, or another context? |
| Shared scheme files | Did the scheme’s selected target, build configuration, test plan, executable, launch arguments, diagnostics, profiling, or archive action change? |
| Entitlements and signing-related files | Could capabilities, provisioning requirements, bundle identifiers, or distribution behavior change? |
| Build scripts and related automation | Does a script consume a changed setting, configuration name, product path, or scheme? Does CI invoke a different action as a result? |
Do not infer a setting’s impact from a filename alone. A Release-looking file may be included by multiple configurations, and a target-specific value may override a project-wide value. Trace the inclusion and scope in Xcode.
Classify every change by scope
Before deciding whether a changed line is effective, record the dimensions that select a build value. The same setting name can have several values, with only one applying to a particular build.
| Dimension | What to check | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Project versus target | Is the value on the project, a specific application target, a test target, an extension, or another product? | Target settings can override project defaults. A project-level edit may have no effect on a target that already supplies its own value. |
| Configuration | Does it apply to Debug, Release, or a custom configuration? | Developers may see one behavior locally while archives or CI use another configuration. |
| Platform or SDK | Is the assignment conditional for a platform or SDK? | An iOS value may not be the value used for a macOS, simulator, or other SDK build. |
| Architecture | Is it conditional for an architecture? | Device and simulator builds can select different values, especially for search paths and excluded architectures. |
| Scheme and action | Which scheme and action—Build, Run, Test, Profile, or Archive—select the configuration and targets? | A setting can be correct for one action while a different action uses another configuration or target. |
| Command-line or automation override | Does CI or a script pass a setting or configuration override? | The value shown in a project file may not be the final value used by an automated build. |
Use this classification in review comments. “Changed SWIFT_VERSION” is incomplete; “the app target’s Release value for device builds changes from one version to another, and the archive scheme selects Release” explains both scope and likely consequence.
Find the value Xcode actually uses
A line-level diff is evidence of an assignment, not proof that the assignment wins. In Xcode, open the relevant target or project and choose Build Settings. Use the Levels view to see where values come from, then inspect the Resolved column for the selected target and configuration. Apple Developer Documentation states: “The Resolved column shows the final resolved value Xcode uses to build the item.”
- Open the project in the Xcode version supported by the repository.
- Select the project in the navigator and identify the target affected by the pull request.
- Open Build Settings and select the relevant configuration, such as Debug or Release.
- Switch to Levels so project, configuration-file, target, and other sources are visible.
- Search for the changed setting and compare the source values with the Resolved value.
- Repeat the check for each meaningful combination: the intended target, configuration, SDK or platform, and architecture.
Apple documents build settings as a layered system. Project settings can provide defaults; configuration-file assignments and target settings can alter them, and command-line values can also participate. The precise precedence depends on the setting and the selected build context, so do not state that a changed assignment is effective until the Resolved value confirms it.
How to describe a setting safely
A useful review note contains four parts:
- the setting name;
- the scope and conditions;
- the resolved value before and after the change, when both are known;
- the expected build or product consequence.
For example, ask whether a changed search path is resolved for the archive action, rather than asserting that every build now uses it. If the pull request only changes a project default while a target-level value remains in force, describe the edit as a default change and ask whether that is intentional.

Review .xcconfig files as a hierarchy
Configuration files are plain-text inputs to the same build-setting system. They are often easier to diff than a project file, but a changed line still requires context.
Free tools Windows power users keep installed
One-click scans. No signup required.
Check includes
An .xcconfig can include another configuration file. Follow the include chain before deciding what a value means. A shared base file may feed several targets, while a target-specific file can replace or refine it. A one-line change in a shared file can therefore affect products that are not obvious from the pull request title.
Check conditional assignments
Apple documents conditions based on build configuration, SDK, architecture, and related selectors. Read the condition attached to an assignment and compare it with the action under review. A value conditioned for a simulator SDK does not automatically describe a device build, and a Release-only assignment does not explain Debug behavior.
Check where the file is attached
Confirm whether the file is assigned at project scope or to an individual target and configuration. Then verify the resulting value in Xcode’s Levels and Resolved views. This catches a common review error: treating a file’s textual value as universal when another scope overrides it.
Inspect schemes and actions, not just targets
A scheme determines what developers and automation build, run, test, profile, or archive. Apple’s project concepts describe schemes as selecting the target, build configuration, and executable configuration. A project review that ignores a changed shared scheme can miss a change in the product actually tested or distributed.
Recommended Free Tools
- Open the changed scheme and identify its selected build configuration.
- Review the targets listed for the Build action. Confirm that the intended app, frameworks, extensions, and test bundles are still selected.
- Review the Test action and its test targets or test plan. Check that tests were not removed, disabled, or moved to another configuration.
- Inspect Run, Profile, and Archive actions for changed executable, diagnostics, arguments, environment variables, and configuration selections.
- Compare shared-scheme changes with the automation that invokes them. If CI uses a different scheme or configuration, review that path separately.
A scheme edit can be consequential even when no build-setting line changes. Selecting a different target or configuration changes what a developer considers a passing build, and changing archive details can alter distribution behavior.

Separate intended changes from project-file churn
Xcode may rewrite project-file entries when a developer adds a file, changes a target, or saves with a newer tool version. Reordering, identifier regeneration, or formatting changes are not automatically harmless, but they are not automatically functional changes either.
Ask the author to identify the intended behavior in the pull request description. Then trace the diff to that behavior:
- For a new source file, verify the file reference, group placement, target membership, and compile-sources build phase.
- For a new resource, verify the resource reference and copy-resources phase for the intended target.
- For a dependency, verify both the target dependency and linked or embedded product settings.
- For a build-setting change, verify scope, conditions, and the resolved value.
- For unexplained churn, ask whether it is required and whether it can be isolated into a separate change.
Do not approve unexplained lines merely because Xcode generated them. Conversely, do not block a valid change solely because the file contains reordered entries; establish whether the resulting project opens and behaves correctly.
Validate the affected behavior
After reading the diff, validate the build or test action that the change is supposed to affect. This is practical review guidance derived from the documented settings and scheme behavior, not a claim that Apple mandates a particular CI command.
- Use the team’s supported Xcode version and the same project format expected by contributors and CI.
- Open the project and confirm that the changed targets, schemes, and configurations load without warnings that indicate missing references or incompatible settings.
- Build the affected target in the changed configuration and platform context.
- Run the relevant test action, including the test targets or test plan named by the scheme.
- If the change affects packaging, signing, entitlements, or an archive action, perform the team’s normal archive or distribution validation.
- Compare the result with the pull request’s stated intent. A passing build that exercises the wrong scheme or configuration does not validate the intended change.
Record the context of any validation: Xcode version, target, configuration, platform or SDK, and action. This makes a review result reproducible without claiming that one command works for every repository or hosting provider.
Understand source control and merge behavior
Xcode integrates with Git for project-file history and collaboration. Its source-control views can show comparisons, local change indicators, upstream changes, status refreshes, pulls, and rebases. Use the pull request’s complete diff and the repository’s normal review interface rather than assuming that one universal command-line recipe applies to every host.

A textual merge can succeed while producing an unintended project. After resolving a conflict, reopen the project, inspect the affected target and scheme, and repeat the Resolved-value and build checks. Pay particular attention to conflicts involving:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- the same target’s build phases;
- file references and target membership;
- configuration sections and conditional settings;
- shared schemes;
- format conversions performed by different Xcode versions.
When the conflict is ambiguous, preserve neither side blindly. Determine which target, configuration, or scheme behavior the team intends, then verify the resulting project in Xcode.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.Project-file formats: .pbxproj and .xcproj
Format changes require a compatibility decision, not just a prettier diff. Apple’s “Updating your Xcode project configuration file format” documentation says earlier Xcode releases use a property-list project configuration file with a .pbxproj extension. It says Xcode 27.2 and later defaults to a hierarchical JSON .xcproj file, and Xcode 27 and later supports both formats. The documentation describes the JSON format as beta.
| Review axis | Existing property-list format | Hierarchical JSON format |
|---|---|---|
| Minimum Xcode compatibility | Use when contributors or CI must support releases that do not understand the new format. | Require Xcode 27 or later support; the default behavior is specifically identified as Xcode 27.2 and later. |
| Intent visibility | Reviewers may need to interpret dense property-list structure and generated identifiers. | Apple says comparisons correspond more closely to actions in Xcode. |
| Merge behavior | Project edits can create difficult textual conflicts. | Apple says the hierarchical format is intended to make merge conflicts less likely. |
| Repository tooling | Existing scripts and integrations may already expect the established format. | Verify that every repository tool, CI job, editor integration, and contributor workflow understands the new format; compatibility for every third-party tool is not established by Apple’s documentation. |
Before approving a conversion, confirm the minimum Xcode version for every contributor and CI environment, test opening and building the project, and verify repository tooling. Do not convert solely to reduce diff noise if the team cannot establish that compatibility.
A review checklist for the pull request
- Have all changed project, configuration, scheme, entitlement, and build-script files been inventoried?
- For every consequential setting, is the project-or-target scope documented?
- Are Debug, Release, and custom configurations distinguished?
- Have SDK, platform, and architecture conditions been checked?
- Has the setting’s source and final Resolved value been inspected in Xcode?
- Do changed schemes still build, test, profile, and archive the intended targets?
- Are new files present in the correct groups, build phases, and target memberships?
- Are unexplained generated or reordered lines either justified or removed?
- Was the affected action validated on the team’s supported Xcode version?
- If the format changed, are contributor, CI, and repository-tool compatibility requirements satisfied?
- After any conflict resolution, was the project reopened and the affected behavior rechecked?
Common review mistakes and how to correct them
“The changed line is the value used by the build.”
Correct this by checking Levels and Resolved for the exact target, configuration, SDK, architecture, and action. A higher-precedence target or conditional assignment may win.

Best Value
“The merge was clean, so the project is valid.”
Reopen the merged project, inspect schemes and settings, and build or test the intended target. Git’s textual success does not validate Xcode’s semantic configuration.
“The new format is automatically better.”
Evaluate the Xcode version threshold, beta status, team tooling, and CI compatibility before conversion. Improved comparison and conflict behavior do not remove compatibility requirements.
“A passing test proves the pull request is correct.”
Confirm that the test used the intended scheme, target, configuration, and platform. A different action can pass while the changed archive or Release path remains unverified.
What a precise review comment looks like
Write comments that let the author reproduce the concern:
- Location: name the target, configuration, scheme action, or configuration file.
- Observed change: state the assignment, membership, or selection that changed.
- Effective context: identify the Resolved value or explain which higher-precedence value still wins.
- Risk: describe the concrete build, test, packaging, or distribution consequence.
- Request: ask for the intended scope, a correction, or validation of the affected action.
For example: “The project-level value changed, but the application target still resolves its Release value from the target configuration. Is the goal to change the archive configuration? Please verify the archive scheme’s Resolved value and include the resulting validation.” This is more actionable than saying that a project setting “looks wrong.”
