Turning memory off usually changes future personalization; it does not necessarily erase saved memories or old chats.
This guide covers ChatGPT, the updated Copilot app for personal Microsoft accounts, and Gemini. Settings and eligibility vary by account and version, so use the linked live help pages if a label differs. Instructions are current as of October 4, 2026.

What does an AI assistant remember—and what does deletion mean?
“Memory” is not one universal store. An assistant may use saved preferences, details inferred from earlier conversations, conversation history, files, or information available through connected apps. Those sources can have separate controls. A detail can therefore disappear from a visible memory list yet remain in a chat, a file, or an app the assistant can access.
Use this audit for each detail you no longer want used:

- Review the assistant’s memory or personalization controls and remove the item, if listed.
- Find and delete the conversation or activity record where the detail was shared or learned.
- Check connected apps and uploaded or saved files for another copy, and remove or disconnect the relevant source if appropriate.
- Review separate controls for chat history and model improvement. They affect different things from memory.
- Allow for the service’s stated deletion or retention period; removing an item from a user-facing control is not a promise of instant erasure from every system.
In particular, “turn memory off,” “delete a memory,” “delete a chat,” and “stop model training” are distinct actions.
How to review and delete ChatGPT memories
Inspect or remove saved memories
In ChatGPT, open Settings > Personalization > Memory. Depending on your account’s memory experience, you may see controls named Memory, Reference saved memories, Reference chat history, Memory summary, Manage, or Saved memories. You can ask ChatGPT what it remembers, correct information in a conversation, or use the available memory-management controls to remove saved items.
A memory summary is a high-level view; it may not show every detail or source ChatGPT can reference. If a fact should no longer be used, check the other relevant sources too. OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT explains that deleting a chat alone does not necessarily delete a separate saved memory created from that chat. Conversely, removing a saved memory does not itself delete the chat that supplied it.

Check chats, files, and connected apps
Search for and delete the conversation where you shared the information if you do not want it retained in chat history. Also check relevant Library files and connected apps: they can be independent sources of information ChatGPT may reference. Telling ChatGPT “don’t mention this again” can affect future personalization behavior, but it does not delete the underlying chat, file, or other source.
Understand what the memory switches do
OpenAI says turning off Reference chat history schedules information remembered from past chats for deletion from its systems within 30 days. The original chats remain in history unless you delete them separately. Saved memories are separate and must be deleted through the saved-memory controls; turning off Reference saved memories also turns off Reference chat history. OpenAI may retain logs of deleted saved memories for up to 30 days for safety and debugging. See OpenAI’s Memory in ChatGPT guidance for current behavior.
Model-improvement controls are separate. Turning off Improve the model for everyone means new conversations are not used to train OpenAI models, but it does not remove saved chats from history. Temporary Chat does not appear in history, create or update memories, or get used to improve models while temporary; OpenAI says temporary chats may be retained for up to 30 days for safety. How to review and delete Microsoft Copilot memories
Personal Microsoft account in the updated Copilot app
For the updated consumer Copilot app and a personal Microsoft account, open Settings > Personalization > Manage next to Saved memories. Delete an individual entry or choose Delete all memories. To stop Copilot saving memories going forward, switch off Saved memories.
That switch does not erase entries already saved: Microsoft explicitly says disabling Copilot Memory does not automatically delete saved memories. Use Manage to remove them, and manage chat history separately. Microsoft identifies August 18, 2026 as the availability date of the updated consumer Copilot app on web, desktop, and mobile. Work or school accounts are a different route
The personal-account steps above do not cover organizational accounts or Copilot inside Microsoft 365 apps. Microsoft’s separate Microsoft 365 Copilot guidance describes work-context memory, which may draw on Copilot Chat conversations, usage data, Microsoft 365 work data, usage signals, and profile information. Its documented route is Copilot Chat settings > Chat settings > Personalization > Manage saved memories. Turning off the control still does not itself delete existing items. Consult Manage Copilot Memory in Microsoft 365 Copilot for that account type.

How to review and delete Gemini memories
Remove details learned from past chats
For past-chat personalization, Gemini’s web settings path is Settings & help > Personal Intelligence > Memory. To remove information learned from earlier chats, delete all relevant conversations from Gemini Apps Activity. Google notes that it may take a short time for Gemini to stop using a deleted chat for personalization. To correct a detail instead, correct Gemini in a chat while Memory is enabled. Remove information from a connected Google app
If the detail came from a connected Google app, address both sources: delete the relevant Gemini chats and disconnect the app containing the information. Disconnecting alone can leave the detail in a past chat; deleting the chat alone can leave it in the connected app. Changes to or deletion of a connected-app item can take days to affect Gemini’s experience. Review activity and Keep Activity
Gemini Apps Activity is separate from the memory view. Review or delete activity, and turn off Keep Activity in Gemini Apps Activity or My Activity if you do not want future activity saved there. Turning Keep Activity off does not mean conversations vanish immediately: Google says they may remain associated with your account for up to 72 hours so it can provide the service and process feedback. Past-chat Memory eligibility is not universal. Google’s cited guidance lists personal-account and age requirements and excludes work, school, and supervised accounts. If the Memory option is absent, account eligibility or feature availability may be the reason.
