To review your privacy, check Facebook’s separate audience, profile, discovery, tagging and blocking controls, then review the privacy controls currently shown in your Instagram app. If your accounts are connected, inspect Accounts Center too—but do not assume one change applies to both platforms. Check the audience on each post and on anything shared across accounts.
Start with Facebook’s privacy controls
Facebook does not offer one setting that makes every part of an account private. Its settings group controls by what they affect. To begin, open the profile menu and select Settings & privacy, then Settings. Under Audience and visibility, review the available sections. Labels and options can vary by profile type and interface.

Facebook’s privacy settings guide identifies controls for profile details; how people find and contact you; posts; Stories; Pages; Reels; followers and public content; profile and tagging; and blocking. Use Privacy Checkup as a guided starting point for sharing choices, then review individual categories rather than treating it as a universal privacy switch.

Review the default audience for future posts and Stories, and change it to the scope you intend wherever the option is available. Depending on the control, choices may include Public, friends or followers, selected people, or only you. A default affects future sharing; it does not necessarily change the audience of material already published.

Review profile details and discoverability
Check which profile details are visible and how people can find or contact you. Facebook’s guidance specifically recommends reviewing whether it can suggest your profile based on your email address or phone number. This is separate from the audience on an individual post: limiting who can find a profile does not automatically change who can see content marked Public.
Check tagging, followers and blocking
Review profile and tagging controls, follower and public-content settings, and blocking. These govern different interactions: for example, tagging controls concern how others can associate content with your profile, while blocking addresses specific accounts. Select the restrictions that fit your needs in each section.

Review connected accounts in Accounts Center
Accounts Center manages selected settings and connected experiences for accounts added to it. Meta says linking accounts there can enable cross-account personalization, advertising and account suggestions. Review which profiles are linked and which connected experiences are enabled; do not assume that linking accounts makes every privacy choice identical or that a change in one place controls every setting on both services. Facebook says content shared with the Public audience is public information. Current profile and cover photos are also public. Review those items directly, along with post audiences and profile details, rather than relying only on a discoverability setting.

Changing Facebook’s external-search setting does not necessarily make information disappear immediately from search engine results. A search engine may retain a cached result, and Facebook says it does not control those caches; updates can take time. Its guidance on troubleshooting privacy issues explains this distinction.
Audit older Facebook activity
Use Activity Log to find and manage activity you have shared or interacted with. The log itself is visible only to you, but that does not make each underlying post or story private: an item may still appear on your timeline, in search, or in friends’ feeds according to its own audience and context. Review the audience or manage the item itself when you want to change its visibility. Facebook explains this in Manage what you’ve shared on Facebook.

For a broader record, Facebook also provides tools to access or download information, including activity, personal information, connections, logged information, security and login information, off-Meta apps and websites, preferences, and ads information. Some settings may not appear in Accounts Center for every user; Facebook says to check Facebook Settings when needed. See Access or download information about your activity in Facebook groups.
Check the Facebook audience on Instagram Reels you share
An Instagram audience does not guarantee the same audience after a Reel is shared to Facebook. Facebook says that when no Facebook Reels default has been selected, the default audience is Friends for a private Instagram account and Public for a public Instagram account. Instagram followers and Facebook friends may also be different people. Before or after sharing, inspect the Facebook audience on the Reel itself. Facebook’s Reels audience guidance describes these defaults.
Review Instagram privacy in the app
Open the privacy controls currently available in your Instagram app and review the account’s privacy status, content sharing, interactions and audience options. Check the controls relevant to your use, such as who can interact with or see your content, and inspect each item’s audience when sharing. Menu names and availability can vary; exact current Instagram paths and account-specific options are not established here, so follow the labels shown in your app rather than relying on a fixed tap-by-tap route.
