To change message filtering, open Messages, tap Filters (or Filter), choose Manage Filtering, and adjust Screen Unknown Senders or Text Message Filter. Suspected junk is handled separately in the Spam folder. These controls do not delete messages, but they can hide notifications and remove conversations from your main list, so knowing which filter moved a message is essential.
Which iPhone filter moved the message?
iPhone has two different systems that are easy to confuse. Apple’s current iPhone user guide documents the sender-based controls for iOS 27, while Apple’s spam-recovery instructions describe the spam controls in iOS 26. Menu names and availability can differ by iOS release, country, region, carrier, and language.

| Control | What it identifies | Where the message goes | Notifications |
|---|---|---|---|
| Screen Unknown Senders | Messages from senders who are not known to you | Filters > Unknown Senders | Normally suppressed, with optional categories for allowed notifications where available |
| Text Message Filter | Unknown SMS, MMS, and RCS messages for sorting | Transactions or Promotions | Depends on your notification choices and installed extensions |
| Filter Spam | Messages identified as suspected junk | Filters > Spam | No notification for the suspected spam message |
Screening is about whether the sender is familiar. Spam detection is about whether the content appears harmful or unwanted. A legitimate delivery notice can be from an unknown sender, and a known contact can still send a message that you should report or block.

Check your iOS version before changing a setting
Apple’s labels are not identical across releases. The current guide at Apple Support’s “Screen and filter text messages on iPhone” is versioned for iOS 27. Apple’s separate “View and recover spam messages on your iPhone” article describes iOS 26. If a label in this guide is missing, open Settings > General > Software Update to see which release is installed, then look for the closest equivalent under Settings > Apps > Messages or the Filters menu in Messages.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Some options, especially notification categories for unknown senders and reporting choices for carrier messages, are not offered in every country or region. A missing control does not necessarily mean that your phone is malfunctioning.
Turn Screen Unknown Senders on or off
Change the main screening switch
- Open Messages.
- Go to the conversation list.
- Tap Filter (some versions display Filters).
- Tap Manage Filtering.
- Turn Screen Unknown Senders on or off.
When this switch is on, messages from unfamiliar numbers are moved out of the normal conversation list. They remain on the phone in the Unknown Senders folder; screening is not deletion. Because the conversation is no longer in the main list, the sender’s message may also appear to have disappeared if you do not open the filter menu.
Allow notifications for selected unknown messages
If your region and iOS version provide it, tap Allow Notifications in the filtering controls. You can choose categories of unknown messages for which alerts should still appear. Apple gives time-sensitive verification codes as an example. The exact categories and their availability vary by country and region, so the absence of this option is expected on some iPhones.
Find a screened message
- Open Messages and tap Filter or Filters.
- Choose Unknown Senders.
- Open the conversation you need.
Screened conversations stay in that folder until the sender is treated as known or you change the filtering behavior. Links and blurred images from an unknown sender may remain restricted until you mark the sender as known.
Mark a legitimate sender as known
Use the conversation in Unknown Senders
Open the legitimate conversation in Unknown Senders and use Apple’s Mark as Known command when it is shown. You can instead add the person or organization to Contacts. Either action brings messages from that sender back into the regular conversation list and allows links and blurred images to be opened.
Marking a sender known affects future handling; it does not turn every unrelated number from the same organization into a known sender. If the sender uses a different number, review that conversation separately.
When adding a contact is the better choice
- Add a family member, school, doctor, delivery service, or other recurring sender whose number you recognize.
- Use a contact card when you want the sender to be identifiable across other communication features.
- Use Mark as Known for a one-off legitimate sender when you do not want to keep a contact entry.
Do not mark a message known merely because it contains a familiar logo or asks for a code. Verify the sender through a trusted channel before opening links or responding.

Sort unknown SMS, MMS, and RCS messages into categories
Sender screening and text-message categorization are separate controls. Apple’s current guide places the text-message controls inside the Messages filtering area.
- Open Messages.
- Tap Filter or Filters, then Manage Filtering.
- Open Text Message Filter.
- Turn it on to sort eligible unknown SMS, MMS, and RCS messages into Transactions and Promotions.
- In the same area, enable any installed third-party message-filtering extensions only if you trust the provider and understand what information it can process.
Apple says this text-message filter does not apply to a sender you have replied to three times or more. That operational rule means a recurring exchange can remain outside the category sorting even if the number is not saved in Contacts. If such a sender is unwanted, use blocking or reporting rather than relying on the category filter.
Review and recover messages in Spam (iOS 26)
Open the Spam folder
Apple says spam detection is on by default in iOS 26 and moves suspected junk to Spam without notifying you. To inspect it:
- Open Messages.
- Tap Filters (or the version’s equivalent filter control).
- Tap Spam.
- Select a message to read its details.
Messages in Spam are restricted: Apple says you cannot reply to one or click its links until you move it to the inbox. Treat the folder as a quarantine area, not as a second inbox.
Restore a legitimate message
- Open the message in Spam.
- Tap Not Spam.
- Tap Move to Inbox.
Some Apple regional documentation uses slightly different wording for the recovery buttons. Look for the action that identifies the message as not spam and returns it to the inbox. If the message was also screened as unknown, it may still require a separate decision about whether to mark the sender known.
Change spam detection from Settings
Apple’s iOS 26 instructions also provide this route: open Settings > Apps > Messages, scroll to Filter Spam, and change the switch. If your iPhone uses a different Settings organization, open the Messages settings and search for “spam” or “filter.” Turning off spam detection changes suspected-junk handling; it does not automatically turn off Screen Unknown Senders or the Text Message Filter.
How the filters interact
A single message can be affected by more than one decision. For example, a first-time delivery company message may be placed in Unknown Senders, while a suspicious promotional message may go directly to Spam. If you recover it from Spam and the sender is still unfamiliar, mark the sender known or add the number to Contacts as a separate step. Turning off one switch does not undo the others.

Use this order when a message is missing: check Spam first if you expected no alert at all, then check Unknown Senders, and finally check Transactions and Promotions. Search in Messages for a phone number or distinctive word as an additional shortcut. A search result can reveal the conversation’s location, but it does not change its filtering status.

Apple permits installed third-party message-filtering extensions in the Text Message Filter area. Enable one only when you understand who supplies it and what message information it may process. A third-party extension is an additional filtering layer, not an Apple guarantee that every classification is correct. If a message repeatedly lands in an unexpected category, temporarily disable the extension and compare the result with Apple’s built-in controls.
Notification suppression can also be mistaken for message loss. Check Settings > Notifications > Messages if alerts are missing even after you find the conversation. Filtering controls decide where the message is filed; notification settings decide whether and how an alert appears. Focus modes, scheduled summaries, and muted conversations can further reduce visible alerts without changing the folder.
Report spam and block a sender are different actions
| Action | Result | What it shares or prevents |
|---|---|---|
| Report | Sends the message for abuse or junk review | For iMessage, message and sender information goes to Apple. For SMS, MMS, or RCS, information may be shared with your carrier and its affiliates, depending on carrier and country or region. |
| Block Contact | Prevents messages from that contact or number from being delivered | Blocking in Messages also blocks the contact in other Apple apps and services, including Mail, Phone, and FaceTime. |
Reporting does not stop the sender from sending more messages. Blocking is the control that prevents delivery from that sender. Apple also says you cannot report a message after replying to it. If an SMS, MMS, or RCS conversation has no report option, Apple advises contacting your carrier.
Report an unwanted message
Use the report-junk or report-spam command shown in the conversation or filter view before replying. Follow the confirmation prompts and review the disclosure about sharing information with Apple or your carrier. The exact command can vary by message type, region, and iOS release.
Recommended Free Tools
Block a number or contact
- Open the conversation in Messages.
- Tap the person’s icon or name at the top.
- Tap Info.
- Scroll down and tap Block Contact.
- Confirm the block.
Because the block applies beyond Messages, use it only when you want the broader effect across Apple communication services. To reverse it later, review your blocked contacts in the relevant Apple settings and remove the number.
When to leave filtering on
Keep Screen Unknown Senders enabled if unsolicited texts are frequent and you prefer a quieter conversation list. It is especially useful when you can check the filtered folders regularly. Consider turning it off temporarily if you are waiting for a one-time message from an unfamiliar number and cannot afford to miss an alert. You can also leave screening on and use Allow Notifications for available time-sensitive categories, which is less disruptive than enabling every unknown-message notification.

Do not disable every filter simply because one legitimate message was misclassified. First recover the message, mark the sender known or add the contact, and check whether a notification category or third-party extension caused the confusion. Disabling spam detection removes a quarantine layer for all suspected junk, not just the one message you wanted.
Troubleshoot a missing or delayed text
The message is not in the main conversation list
- Open Messages > Filters > Unknown Senders; Screen Unknown Senders may have moved it there.
- Check Filters > Spam; iOS 26 may have classified it as suspected junk.
- Check Transactions and Promotions if Text Message Filter is enabled.
- Search Messages for a distinctive word, phone number, or sender name.
You found a legitimate message in Spam
Use Not Spam, then Move to Inbox. If future messages from the same sender continue to be screened, add the sender to Contacts or mark the conversation as known where that option appears.
You found a legitimate message in Unknown Senders
Mark the sender known or add the number to Contacts. If you need alerts for similar unknown messages but do not want all unknown conversations in the main list, review Allow Notifications categories instead of disabling screening entirely.
A report option is missing
Reporting availability depends on whether the message is iMessage, SMS, MMS, or RCS and on your carrier and region. Apple specifically advises contacting the carrier when an SMS, MMS, or RCS report option is unavailable. Do not reply simply to make a report button appear; Apple says a message cannot be reported after you have replied.
A setting or folder is not present
Confirm the installed iOS version and region. Apple’s guide is versioned for iOS 27, while the spam-recovery instructions cover iOS 26, and Apple changes labels and placement between releases. Look under Settings > Apps > Messages and in the Messages Filter menu. Some notification choices are offered only in selected countries.
The sender says a reply never arrived
Check whether the conversation was blocked, filtered, or muted. A sender who has become known should appear in the regular list, but a different number from the same organization may still be treated as unfamiliar. If you replied three times or more, Apple’s text-message filter rule may no longer categorize that sender, so inspect the main list and notification settings as well.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsA practical setup that reduces missed legitimate texts
- Leave Screen Unknown Senders on if you receive frequent unsolicited messages but need a clean primary conversation list.
- Check Unknown Senders whenever you are expecting a code, appointment reminder, delivery update, or first-time contact.
- Use Allow Notifications for available time-sensitive categories rather than enabling every unknown-message alert.
- Review Spam periodically, especially when an expected message has not arrived; use Not Spam and Move to Inbox for mistakes.
- Add recurring legitimate senders to Contacts or mark them known so future conversations are easier to find.
- Report clear junk before replying, and block persistent unwanted senders when you want their messages stopped across Apple services.
These steps preserve the benefit of filtering without assuming that every unfamiliar number is malicious. Always verify unexpected payment requests, login codes, and links through the organization’s known website or app rather than trusting the message alone.

What each setting does not do
- Screen Unknown Senders does not delete messages; it relocates them and normally suppresses alerts.
- Text Message Filter does not replace spam detection and does not apply to senders you have replied to three times or more.
- Filter Spam does not make a message safe to open; it quarantines suspected junk and restricts replying or link tapping until recovery.
- Report does not block future messages.
- Block Contact affects other Apple communication services as well as Messages.
For Apple’s detailed instructions and regional qualifications, consult Apple’s guide to viewing conversations from unknown senders and Apple’s guide to reporting spam and blocking senders. Recheck the on-screen labels after major iOS updates because Apple can reorganize filtering controls.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I turn off message filtering on my iPhone?
Open Messages, tap Filter or Filters, choose Manage Filtering, and turn off Screen Unknown Senders. If Text Message Filter is also on, open that control and switch it off separately. In iOS 26, Filter Spam can be changed under Settings > Apps > Messages. These are separate switches.
Where did a text from an unknown number go?
Check Messages > Filters > Unknown Senders first. If it is not there, check Filters > Spam, then Transactions and Promotions when Text Message Filter is enabled. Search Messages for the sender’s number or a distinctive word.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
How do I find spam texts on iPhone?
In iOS 26, open Messages, tap Filters, and choose Spam. Apple says suspected spam is moved there without a notification. You cannot reply or tap links while it remains in Spam.
How do I mark a number as known?
Open the conversation in Unknown Senders and choose Mark as Known when that command appears. Adding the number to Contacts has the same practical effect for future messages: they return to the regular conversation list and links or blurred images can be opened.
Does reporting spam block the sender?
No. Reporting sends message information to Apple for iMessage, or potentially to your carrier for SMS, MMS, or RCS, depending on region. Blocking the contact or number is the action that prevents future delivery.
Why is there no report option?
Availability depends on the message type, carrier, country, and region. Apple advises contacting your carrier when an SMS, MMS, or RCS report option is unavailable. Do not reply first, because Apple says a message cannot be reported after you have replied.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Will turning off Screen Unknown Senders delete hidden texts?
No. Screening relocates messages and normally suppresses alerts; it does not delete them. Turning the switch off changes where future messages appear, while existing conversations can still be found through the filter folders or search.
Why did a known company’s new number get filtered?
Known status applies to a particular sender or number. If the company uses a different number, that new conversation can still be treated as unknown. Mark the new conversation known or add its number to Contacts after verifying it is legitimate.
The Bottom Line
Use Screen Unknown Senders to separate unfamiliar conversations, Text Message Filter to sort eligible unknown SMS, MMS, and RCS messages, and Filter Spam to quarantine suspected junk. Check Unknown Senders and Spam before assuming a text was deleted, restore mistakes with Not Spam and Move to Inbox, and remember that reporting and blocking have different effects. Labels and availability vary by iOS version, carrier, and region.
