Review permissions by data category, inspect location access app by app, check cross-company tracking, then enable App Privacy Report if you need evidence of recent access and network activity. Use Safety Check when you need to audit sharing with people, apps, devices, or accounts. Make the narrowest change that solves the concern, because broad controls can disable features or affect other people.
Use a narrow-to-broad review order
iPhone privacy controls operate at different scopes. A permission for one app is more targeted than a device-wide switch, while Safety Check can affect sharing with people and connected devices. Reviewing them in the right order reduces disruption and makes it easier to understand what changed.

- Check the data category. Review Contacts, Photos, Calendar, Reminders, Motion & Fitness, Camera, Microphone, and other categories under Privacy & Security.
- Audit location separately. Location has its own menu, including a control for precise versus approximate location.
- Check tracking. Tracking controls requests to follow activity across other companies’ apps and websites; it is different from ordinary permission to use a sensor or file.
- Collect evidence. App Privacy Report records observed permission use and network activity only after you turn it on.
- Review sharing relationships. Safety Check helps you change sharing with people, apps, devices, and some account-security settings.
Before changing anything, note the current setting and the feature that depends on it. If a change causes a problem, you can restore the previous choice instead of guessing. Take a screenshot or write down important settings if you are conducting a review for someone else.
Review access by data category
Open the category list
- Open Settings.
- Tap Privacy & Security.
- Choose a category such as Contacts, Photos, Calendar, Reminders, Motion & Fitness, Camera, or Microphone.
- Review the apps listed and change each app’s access using the choices shown on your iPhone.
An app appears in a category only after it has requested that permission. Therefore, an absent app has not necessarily been proven safe; it may simply never have asked for access, or it may use a different data path. The list is a record of requests made to iOS, not a complete list of every type of information an app can process.

Decide whether access is justified
Ask what feature needs the data and whether you use that feature. A navigation app may need location, a video-call app may need the camera and microphone, and a photo editor may need selected photos. A simple calculator normally has no obvious reason to read contacts. If the purpose is unclear, check the developer’s privacy policy or contact the developer. A permission request by itself does not prove that the developer collects or shares the information, and some data can be processed on the iPhone without being collected by the developer.
Use the least-permissive choice that still supports the feature. For photos, a limited selection is preferable when you only need to attach a few images. For contacts or calendars, deny access if the app’s main function does not require it. For the camera or microphone, allow access only when you use the related feature, then revisit the choice if the app later adds a feature you actually want.
When you deny a permission, the app may show a warning or offer a shortcut back to Settings. That prompt is not a reason to grant access automatically. Decide whether the missing feature is worth the data access, and remember that you can change the decision later.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesReview location access without breaking useful features
Audit apps individually
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services.
- Review the apps shown and tap one to see its current access and the explanation for requesting location.
- Choose the least access that supports the feature you need. Where available, consider a choice that asks next time rather than granting continuing access.
Location permission is separate from the precision setting. If an app needs to know your general area but not your exact coordinates, open that app’s location settings and turn Precise Location off. The app then receives an approximate location. This is useful for regional weather, local content, or nearby services that do not require a precise position.
Choosing an option that asks next time gives you a fresh decision when the app requests location again. It can be useful for an app you use only occasionally, but frequent prompts may become inconvenient. A setting that allows location only while using an app may not support a feature that must operate in the background, so test the feature after making the change.
Do not treat the global switch as a routine cleanup
Turning off Location Services for the entire iPhone is a much broader action. Apple warns that many important iPhone features can stop working when it is disabled. Maps, location-based automations, emergency-related functions, and other system features may behave differently. If one app is the concern, change that app instead of disabling location everywhere.
For a deeper audit, open Location Services > System Services. Review the system-level services there and disable only items whose function and trade-off you understand. The labels can vary with the iOS release installed on the phone. After any change, test directions, location-based reminders, weather, and other features you depend on.

Control cross-company app tracking
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Tracking.
- Review the apps that have requested permission to track activity across other companies’ apps and websites.
- Turn an individual app’s permission on or off, or disable Allow Apps to Request to Track to stop apps from asking in the future.
This setting concerns cross-company tracking, including activity used for advertising or shared with data brokers. It does not replace the permissions for contacts, photos, microphones, cameras, or location. A tracking choice can therefore be changed without granting or revoking access to those other categories.
If you turn off Allow Apps to Request to Track, apps cannot present new requests through that control. This does not erase information an app already has, change its own account settings, or stop every form of advertising measurement. Review the app’s account and privacy controls separately when that distinction matters.
Turn on App Privacy Report for observable evidence
Enable the report
- Go to Settings > Privacy & Security > App Privacy Report.
- Tap to turn it on.
- Use the iPhone normally for a while before drawing conclusions from the results.
The report covers access to privacy-sensitive data and sensors, as well as app and website network activity. Apple’s guide describes a view of the past seven days. It starts collecting only after activation, so an empty or sparse report immediately after you enable it does not show that an app never accessed data. Give it enough time to observe your normal routines, including the apps you use only once or twice a week.
Interpret entries carefully
A listed access tells you that the event was observed; it is not a verdict that the app is unsafe. A domain may be contacted directly by the app or by content displayed inside it. Likewise, an app can use information on the device without sending it to its developer. If an access or domain seems unexpected, compare it with the app’s permissions and privacy policy, then ask the developer for an explanation if necessary.
Recommended Free Tools
Look for patterns rather than treating one timestamp as proof. An app that accesses the microphone while you are recording a voice message is different from an app that appears to access it when no related feature is in use, although the report alone cannot explain intent. Check whether another app or embedded website was active at the same time.
Apple states that App Privacy Report data is encrypted and stored only on the device. Turning the report off clears its collected data. If you need an ongoing comparison, leave it enabled and check it periodically rather than disabling it after every review. The report is visibility into observed activity, not a security certification or a complete history of everything that happened before activation.
Use Safety Check when the concern involves sharing
Choose a selective review or an emergency reset
- Open Settings > Privacy & Security > Safety Check.
- Select Manage Sharing & Access for a selective, item-by-item review.
- Select Emergency Reset when you need to stop sharing quickly and follow the reset steps presented by iPhone.
- Review the final results, including connected devices and account-security information, and verify that the intended changes were made.
Safety Check is available on iPhones running iOS 16 or later. The exact options can differ when Screen Time restrictions are active, a mobile-device-management profile is installed, or Stolen Device Protection changes the device’s behavior. If a work or school administrator manages the phone, some settings may be unavailable to you.

Manage Sharing & Access is the better starting point when you need to stop sharing with one person, app, or device while preserving other arrangements. Emergency Reset is intentionally broad: it is designed for speed, so expect to review and rebuild selected sharing afterward.

Consider personal-safety consequences first
Apple’s Safety Check guidance says to consider potential effects on your safety and privacy before making changes or deleting information. Stopping or restarting sharing can alert another person or change access to a service. If you are in a sensitive situation, plan where and when to make the change. Safety Check includes Quick Exit, which closes Settings and returns to the Home Screen; changes already made remain saved.
Use Manage Sharing & Access when removing one person, app, or device is safer than ending every sharing relationship. Use Emergency Reset when speed matters more than preserving existing arrangements, then check the results when it is safe to do so. Do not assume that a reset removes every account session or social-media connection; those may require separate action.
Know what Safety Check does not cover
Safety Check is not a universal inventory of every account, device, or sharing channel. Apple’s examples of items that may require separate review include:
- Non-Apple accounts and their passwords.
- Sharing configured directly in social-media services.
- Devices signed in to a different Apple Account.
- Some sharing settings on an iPad or Mac.
Review those services and devices in their own apps or account-security pages. A clean Safety Check result does not establish that no information is shared elsewhere. If you use family, work, or school accounts, check the administrator’s or provider’s sharing controls as well.

| Control | Scope | Best use | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|---|
| Category permission | One app and one data type | Remove unnecessary access to contacts, photos, calendars, reminders, motion data, camera, microphone, or similar information | A feature that depends on the permission may stop working |
| Precise Location | One app’s location precision | Keep regional functionality while withholding exact coordinates | Features requiring an exact position may become less accurate or unavailable |
| Location Services | Device-wide location access | Disable location broadly when you understand the impact | Many important iPhone features can stop working |
| Tracking permission | Cross-company tracking requests | Prevent an app from tracking activity across other companies’ apps and websites | Does not replace ordinary sensor or file permissions |
| App Privacy Report | Observed access and network activity after activation | Investigate what apps and websites have recently contacted or accessed | It is retrospective evidence, not a judgment of intent, and it has no data from before activation |
| Safety Check | Sharing with people, apps, devices, and selected account controls | Review relationship-based sharing or perform a rapid reset | Broad changes can affect people, services, and personal safety |
The most precise control is usually the safest first move. Reduce precision before removing location entirely, revoke one app’s access before changing a category for every app, and use selective sharing management before an emergency reset when circumstances allow.
Common surprises and how to respond
An app is missing from a privacy category
That usually means the app has not requested that category’s permission. It does not prove that the app has no data practices; check the app’s own privacy information and the categories it actually uses. An app can also offer a feature through a browser or another service that has its own permission record.

The App Privacy Report is empty
Confirm that the report is enabled, then use the phone and allow time for the past-seven-day view to populate. The report cannot show activity that occurred before activation, and a short observation period may naturally contain few entries. Turning the report off clears the data that had been collected.
A domain in the report looks unfamiliar
Identify which app or website contacted it and whether the connection occurred while embedded content was displayed. Treat the entry as a lead for investigation, not proof of misuse. Review the app’s permissions and privacy policy before deciding whether to remove access. If the explanation remains unclear, contact the developer and include the app version and the observed time.
A feature stopped working after a change
Return to the relevant category, location-app setting, or tracking screen and restore only the permission the feature needs. If the problem followed a global Location Services change, re-enable that service and then restrict individual apps instead. Test the feature immediately so you know which permission solved the problem.
Safety Check offers fewer choices than expected
Check whether Screen Time restrictions or a mobile-device-management profile limits the phone. Stolen Device Protection can also affect behavior. Remember that Safety Check does not include every non-Apple account, social service, or separately signed-in device. Review those channels independently.
Someone else may notice the change
Stopping or restarting sharing can notify another person or alter a service’s behavior. In a personal-safety situation, consider the timing and location of the review, use Quick Exit when appropriate, and seek trusted support. A privacy improvement is not helpful if the way it is made creates immediate danger.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.A repeatable privacy review
- Record the reason. Write down the app, feature, or sharing relationship that prompted the review.
- Review category permissions. Remove access that has no current purpose, including camera or microphone access you no longer use.
- Reduce location precision. Turn off Precise Location when approximate location is sufficient.
- Check tracking. Revoke unnecessary cross-company tracking permission or disable future requests.
- Enable App Privacy Report. Leave it on long enough to provide a useful past-seven-day view.
- Use Safety Check if people or devices are involved. Prefer a selective review unless an emergency reset is necessary.
- Check outside Apple’s controls. Review non-Apple accounts, social services, Macs, iPads, and other devices separately.
- Test the features you rely on. Confirm navigation, photo attachment, messaging, calendars, camera, microphone, and other affected functions still work.
- Recheck after updates. iOS releases can change labels and available choices, so confirm the paths on the version installed on the phone.
Privacy settings are reversible, but the consequences are not always symmetrical. A targeted permission change usually affects one app; a device-wide location shutdown or emergency sharing reset can affect many features and relationships. Review the scope, expected benefit, and safety impact before confirming each change.
Frequently Asked Questions
Where do I check which iPhone apps can access my photos, contacts, camera, or microphone?
Open Settings > Privacy & Security, choose the relevant category, and review the listed apps. An app appears only after it has requested that permission, so an absent app is not proof that it has no data practices.
Best Value
Should I turn off Location Services for the whole iPhone?
Usually not for a single-app concern. Review Settings > Privacy & Security > Location Services and change that app first. If approximate location is enough, turn off Precise Location. Apple warns that many important iPhone features can stop working when Location Services is disabled globally.
What is the difference between Tracking and ordinary app permissions?
Tracking controls whether an app may follow activity across other companies’ apps and websites, including for advertising or sharing with data brokers. It does not control access to contacts, photos, camera, microphone, or location; those permissions are reviewed separately.
Why is my App Privacy Report empty?
The report collects only after you enable it and describes a recent, past-seven-day view. Use the phone normally and give it time to populate. Turning the report off clears its collected data.
Can Safety Check review every account and device I use?
No. It does not cover every non-Apple account, social-media sharing path, device signed in to another Apple Account, or some sharing settings on an iPad or Mac. Review those services and devices separately.
Can changing privacy settings alert another person?
Stopping or restarting sharing can notify another person or change access to a service. Consider the safety impact before changing settings. Safety Check’s Quick Exit closes Settings and returns to the Home Screen while preserving changes already made.
The Bottom Line
Review iPhone privacy from narrowest to broadest: remove unnecessary app permissions, use approximate rather than precise location when possible, control cross-company tracking, enable App Privacy Report for evidence, and use Safety Check carefully for relationship-based sharing. Test important features afterward, and remember that Apple’s controls do not include every account, service, or device.
