How to Review AI-Generated Rust Code for Safety and Correctness

Review AI-generated Rust as an untrusted change, not as a proof of correctness. Start with the requested behavior and the project’s contracts, then use compilation, tests, Clippy, and (when relevant) Miri as separate kinds of evidence. Rust’s type system catches many errors, but every unsafe operation still carries a contract that only a human can verify, and a program can be memory-safe while implementing the wrong behavior.

What a trustworthy review must establish

A generated patch is acceptable only when it satisfies three different questions:

As an Amazon Associate I earn from qualifying purchases.

  • Does it compile under this project’s supported toolchain, edition, features, and minimum supported Rust version?
  • Does it fulfill the request and preserve surrounding API, error, ordering, and concurrency contracts?
  • Does every safety-sensitive operation have a valid proof on every reachable path?

These questions overlap, but none substitutes for another. The compiler checks types, lifetimes, borrowing, and many structural constraints. It does not know whether a timeout should be five seconds rather than five minutes, whether an error must be retried, or whether a raw pointer is aligned and points to initialized storage. Tests exercise selected behavior. Clippy highlights patterns that are often wrong, useless, or needlessly complex. Miri can detect some undefined behavior in the paths it executes. Treat the tools as evidence to combine with a specification-driven reading of the diff.

1. Recover the intended behavior before reading the implementation

Begin with the issue, request, design note, or acceptance criteria that caused the change. Rewrite the requirement as observable behavior rather than implementation steps. For example, “parse a frame” should become a list of rules for valid lengths, malformed input, end-of-stream handling, allocation limits, and the error type callers receive.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Make hidden assumptions explicit

For each new branch, side effect, and state transition, ask what assumption it makes about:

  • Input ranges, encodings, optional fields, and empty values.
  • Initial and terminal states, repeated calls, cancellation, and retries.
  • Ordering, determinism, concurrency, locking, and reentrancy.
  • Failure behavior: returned errors, panics, partial writes, cleanup, and rollback.
  • Compatibility with existing callers, serialized formats, feature flags, and supported platforms.

AI-generated code often fills an unspecified gap with a plausible default. That default may be a behavior change. Mark every assumption that is not stated by the request and verify it against the project’s existing convention or ask for a clarified requirement before approving the patch.

Check that every change is necessary

Generated patches may add a dependency, helper, configuration option, logging statement, or fallback path that was not requested. Remove unrelated edits when possible. A smaller diff is easier to reason about and reduces the number of contracts you must re-establish.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

2. Read the surrounding crate and its contracts

Read callers and neighboring implementations before deciding whether a new function is correct. Inspect the public API, trait documentation, error enums, feature-gated modules, build scripts, and tests that describe existing behavior. Confirm the crate edition and supported Rust version; an idiom that is valid on a current compiler may not be accepted by the project’s MSRV.

Look beyond the changed file

  • Find all call sites and determine which inputs they actually pass.
  • Compare new error variants with the project’s established error conversion and display conventions.
  • Check whether an existing parser, validator, lock wrapper, or conversion helper should be reused instead of duplicated.
  • Inspect feature flags and target-specific modules so the change is compiled in every supported configuration.
  • Verify that public documentation, examples, serialization schemas, and trait guarantees remain true.

A function can be locally type-correct yet violate a caller’s expectation. A generated implementation that silently clamps an invalid value, changes iteration order, or turns an error into a panic is not correct merely because the borrow checker accepts it.

3. Compile first, then interpret what compilation means

Run the project’s normal check and build commands, including the feature combinations used in continuous integration. Compilation is an efficient first filter for type mismatches, missing trait bounds, lifetime errors, invalid patterns, and some target-specific problems. Read warnings as well as errors; a warning can reveal an unreachable branch, an accidental coercion, or an API that is not being used as intended.

cargo check
cargo test --all-features
cargo build --all-targets

Use the commands and feature matrix already established by the project rather than blindly adding flags. A successful build proves that the code satisfies the compiler’s checks for that configuration. It does not prove that the algorithm meets the specification, that all runtime paths are exercised, or that an unsafe contract is true. Rust’s safe type system cannot verify obligations introduced by unsafe operations.

4. Run tests that target behavior, not just coverage

Execute the relevant existing tests, then add focused cases for the requirements the generated code is supposed to implement. Rust’s safety guarantees reduce classes of memory errors, but tests are still needed to establish logic correctness.

Build a requirement-to-test matrix

Requirement area Cases to exercise Evidence to inspect
Normal behavior Representative valid inputs, multiple sizes, and expected outputs Values, state changes, emitted events, and ordering
Boundaries Empty, minimum, maximum, just-over-limit, and integer-conversion cases No truncation, overflow, out-of-bounds access, or accidental acceptance
Invalid input Malformed bytes, missing fields, wrong encodings, and impossible combinations Stable error type, no partial state, and no panic unless documented
Failures and recovery I/O errors, cancellation, retries, timeouts, and repeated calls Cleanup, rollback, idempotence, and preserved error causes
Regression The bug or scenario named in the request plus nearby historical cases The test fails without the fix and passes with it
Concurrency Contention, shutdown races, repeated start/stop, and task cancellation Locking, ownership, wakeups, and deterministic termination

Test the negative space

AI output commonly handles the happy path and leaves assumptions untested. Add cases for zero-length buffers, duplicate messages, unusually large values, non-UTF-8 data, an already-closed resource, and a second invocation when the API can be called repeatedly. For parsers and protocol code, test every length and tag boundary. For arithmetic, test conversions at both ends of the destination type. For asynchronous code, test cancellation and a future that returns an error after partial progress.

Keep tests aligned with the contract

A test that merely matches the generated implementation can enshrine a bug. Assert externally visible guarantees rather than private steps. If order is intentionally unspecified, compare as a set or multiset; if order is part of the API, assert it explicitly. Include regression tests for fixes so a later generated change cannot silently reintroduce the defect.

5. Run Clippy and review each diagnostic

The standard invocation is:

cargo clippy

Clippy’s default clippy::all group includes correctness, suspicious, style, complexity, and performance lints. The categories have different weight:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
Category How to treat it
Correctness Investigate immediately. These lints are deny-by-default because the pattern is considered outright wrong or useless; the documented behavior is to abort compilation when triggered.
Suspicious Assume the code may be wrong, ineffective, or expressing a mistaken assumption until you can explain the finding.
Style, complexity, and performance Use project policy and measured impact. They may improve clarity or efficiency but are not automatically defects.
Pedantic Optional and allow-by-default. They can report intentional false positives, so enable them selectively and review rather than applying them mechanically.

Do not accept automated fixes blindly

For each warning, understand why the lint fired and whether the suggested rewrite preserves behavior, evaluation order, allocation, and error handling. An AI assistant may add a broad allow or copy a lint suppression from another module. Prefer a narrow suppression at the smallest scope, with a comment explaining why the diagnostic does not apply. Do not suppress a correctness or suspicious lint merely to obtain a clean build.

Projects sometimes deny warnings in continuous integration. Follow the repository’s established policy instead of adding a blanket denial to a generated patch: broad warning denial can fail builds because of unrelated code. Review the final lint configuration as part of the change.

6. Audit every unsafe boundary manually

Search the diff and the code it calls for unsafe, unsafe functions and trait implementations, raw pointers, unions, mutable statics, foreign-function interfaces, and safety-sensitive attributes. Rust’s Unsafe Rust chapter identifies five capabilities that require programmer judgment:

Capability Questions for the reviewer
Dereferencing a raw pointer Is the pointer valid, properly aligned, initialized, within bounds, and valid for the required read or write for the entire access?
Calling an unsafe function or method What exact preconditions does its documentation state, and where are they established on every path?
Accessing or modifying a mutable static How are synchronization, initialization, aliasing, and thread-safety guaranteed?
Implementing an unsafe trait Does the implementation uphold every invariant promised by the trait for all safe callers?
Accessing a union field Why is this field the active, initialized representation, and what prevents an invalid read?

Write down the proof obligation

For each operation, record the exact contract rather than a vague comment such as “safe because this is internal.” Check:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Pointer validity and alignment.
  • Initialization and the absence of uninitialized bytes where a value is read.
  • Bounds and integer conversions used to compute offsets or lengths.
  • Lifetime and ownership: the referent outlives the access and is not invalidated.
  • Aliasing rules: no simultaneous references or mutable accesses that Rust would forbid.
  • Synchronization and thread-safety when data crosses threads or FFI boundaries.
  • Error and panic paths, including cleanup and partially initialized state.

Then trace every reachable path that reaches the unsafe operation. A check performed in one caller is not sufficient if another public entry point can bypass it. A condition checked before a loop may also need to hold for every iteration if lengths or ownership change inside the loop.

Keep unsafe code narrow

Prefer a safe API or standard-library abstraction when it can express the operation. When unsafe is necessary, isolate it in the smallest possible block and expose a safe wrapper whose preconditions are enforced internally. The wrapper’s safety is the real review target: every permitted input and call sequence must preserve its invariant, including empty inputs, repeated calls, concurrent use, and errors.

The Rust Programming Language puts the maintenance benefit plainly: “Keep unsafe blocks small; you’ll be thankful later when you investigate memory bugs.” A comment should explain the proof and identify the invariant, not merely narrate that a pointer is being dereferenced.

Edition 2024 changes a useful signal

Check the crate edition when reviewing an unsafe fn. The unsafe_op_in_unsafe_fn lint is enabled by default in Edition 2024, while it is allowed by default in earlier editions. Explicit inner unsafe blocks make each operation visible and give the reviewer a precise place to inspect and justify. Do not interpret the older default as evidence that operations inside an unsafe function are automatically sound.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

7. Use Miri as a dynamic check, not a safety certificate

For supported tests and unsafe code, consider running Miri with a nightly toolchain:

cargo +nightly miri test
cargo +nightly miri run

Miri interprets the program or test suite and can detect violations of the rules it models, including undefined behavior encountered on executed paths. It is especially useful for exercising pointer arithmetic, aliasing, initialization, and other unsafe operations under focused tests. The Rust book describes it as “an official Rust tool for detecting undefined behavior.”

A clean run has a strict meaning: the exercised execution did not trigger a violation that Miri understands. It does not cover branches, inputs, targets, or schedules that the run never reaches, and it cannot detect every form of unsoundness. Treat a finding as a high-priority bug signal; do not treat a clean result as proof that an abstraction is sound. Add targeted tests that force each safety-sensitive branch, and retain the ordinary test suite because Miri is not a replacement for functional testing.

8. Keep static and dynamic evidence separate

Method What it can establish What it cannot establish alone
Compiler and borrow checker Type, lifetime, ownership, and language-rule consistency for the selected configuration Intent, complete runtime behavior, or contracts introduced by unsafe code
Clippy Warnings for documented correctness, suspicious, style, complexity, and performance patterns That a warning-free implementation meets the specification
Unit and integration tests Observed functional behavior for the scenarios and assertions they cover Unexecuted paths, all possible schedules, or a proof of memory safety
Miri Some undefined-behavior violations in executed paths under its model Unexecuted behavior, unsupported cases, or complete soundness
Human contract review Whether requirements, invariants, compatibility, and project conventions are actually satisfied It still benefits from tool output and cannot replace running the code

This distinction prevents two common review errors: declaring code correct because it compiles, and declaring unsafe code sound because Miri or tests were clean.

9. Recognize common AI-generated failure modes

Locally plausible, globally incompatible APIs

The generated function may return a new error type, allocate where callers expect borrowing, or change an ordering guarantee. Compare its signature and semantics with every caller and neighboring API. Preserve established conversions and documentation, or make the compatibility change explicit.

Happy-path parsing and arithmetic

Generated parsers often validate a tag but not its length, while generated arithmetic may cast before checking range. Add boundary and malformed-input tests, inspect every conversion, and ensure an error leaves state consistent.

Overly broad unsafe regions

A large unsafe block can hide which operation requires the proof and can accidentally include ordinary code whose assumptions change later. Split it into minimal blocks, move validation into safe code, and document the invariant immediately next to the operation.

Unsound safe wrappers

A wrapper around a raw buffer, FFI handle, or custom synchronization primitive may expose a safe method while failing to enforce lifetime, aliasing, initialization, or thread-safety requirements. Test all public call sequences, not only the sequence used by the generated example. If callers must uphold a precondition, make the function unsafe or enforce that precondition inside the wrapper.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Suppressions that hide evidence

Reject blanket lint allows and unexplained warning changes. Confirm that a diagnostic is irrelevant, scope the suppression narrowly, and record the reason so a later maintainer can reassess it.

Unrelated access and dependency changes

Inspect new dependencies, build scripts, permissions, environment reads, network or file access, generated code, and feature flags. Remove anything not required by the request. A tool-assisted patch can introduce operational risk even when its Rust code is type-correct.

10. Review the final diff and provenance

After tests, linting, and any fixes, review the resulting patch again rather than relying on an earlier reading. Confirm that generated edits did not overwrite a manual correction, reintroduce an unsafe operation, or leave stale comments and tests.

  • Compare the final diff with the original requirement and list every intentional behavior change.
  • Check for duplicated helpers, dead branches, unused dependencies, and feature-specific compilation gaps.
  • Verify error messages, logs, metrics, and tracing do not expose secrets or change operational expectations.
  • Inspect file and network access, environment variables, subprocesses, and permissions added by the patch.
  • Run the project’s documented checks from a clean working tree and record the toolchain, edition, features, and target used.
  • Ensure tests cover the fix, boundaries, invalid inputs, failures, and any unsafe path that can be exercised.

Provenance matters because generated code can look authoritative while having no evidence that its assumptions were validated. Keep the prompt or issue context, the reviewed diff, test results, and any safety proof together in the change record so a future maintainer can reconstruct why the patch was accepted.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

A compact approval checklist

  1. The requested behavior and all unstated assumptions are written down and matched to project contracts.
  2. The crate edition, supported toolchain, MSRV, features, and targets are known.
  3. The normal check and build workflows pass, and diagnostics were read rather than ignored.
  4. Tests cover normal behavior, boundaries, invalid input, errors, recovery, concurrency where relevant, and the regression.
  5. cargo clippy findings were investigated; correctness and suspicious lints were not suppressed casually.
  6. Every unsafe operation has a documented contract and a demonstrated proof on every reachable path.
  7. Unsafe code is minimal, and any safe wrapper enforces its invariant for every allowed input and call sequence.
  8. Miri was used where applicable, with its nightly and coverage limitations understood.
  9. The final diff contains no unnecessary dependency, permission, network, file, or unrelated behavior change.
  10. The final patch, tests, toolchain details, and reasoning are recorded for later review.

Further reading

The online edition of The Rust Programming Language is available free and covers testing, Unsafe Rust, and Miri. A print or ebook edition is optional background reading, not a prerequisite for reviewing generated code. The book’s guidance and the official Clippy documentation are useful references when a generated patch reaches an unsafe boundary or produces a lint that is not self-explanatory.
