Review AI-generated code exactly as you would any other production change—but verify the requirements, assumptions, security boundaries, dependencies, and long-term readability more deliberately. A passing test suite is evidence, not proof that the change solves the right problem. Use a repeatable sequence: establish intent, run checks, inspect the diff, examine security-sensitive paths, assess maintainability and dependencies, run layered automation, and require accountable human approval before merge.
A review sequence that works
AI assistance changes how code is produced, not who is responsible for accepting it. The reviewer must establish what the change is supposed to do, determine whether it actually does that, and look for risks that tools cannot understand from syntax alone.

| Stage | Primary question | Useful evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Intent and context | Is this the right solution to the requested problem? | Issue, acceptance criteria, documentation, architecture, nearby code |
| Functional checks | Does it build and behave correctly, including edge cases? | Compiler output, affected tests, new tests, warnings, failure logs |
| Diff inspection | What changed, and what assumptions or omissions are hidden in it? | Small, focused diff; deleted tests; altered configuration; error paths |
| Security review | Did the change weaken authorization, validation, secrets handling, or a trust boundary? | Input-to-sink tracing, access-control tests, scanner findings, threat model |
| Maintainability | Can another developer understand and safely change this later? | Naming, structure, comments, duplication, testability, dependency health |
| Ownership | Who understood and approved the change? | Named reviewer, pull-request approval, traceable audit record |
Automated checks and human judgment are complementary. A clean scan can show that known patterns were not detected; it cannot establish that business rules, authorization decisions, or architectural constraints are correct.
Use the stages in order, but loop back when a finding changes your understanding of the requirement. For example, discovering that a new endpoint crosses a tenant boundary should trigger another pass over the acceptance criteria, tests, authorization policy, logs, and documentation. Treat the sequence as a decision process rather than a checklist to rush through.

1. Establish intent before reading implementation details
Start with the issue or change request, acceptance criteria, relevant documentation, and the project’s conventions. Read the surrounding implementation before judging the generated fragment. This prevents a locally plausible patch from being accepted simply because it compiles.
Confirm the requested behavior
- Rewrite the requirement in observable terms: inputs, outputs, permitted actors, state changes, and failure behavior.
- Identify which behavior is new and which behavior must remain unchanged.
- Check assumptions about user roles, data formats, time zones, retries, concurrency, and external services.
- Ask whether the patch solves the stated problem or merely implements the prompt literally.
Check architectural fit
Compare the proposed approach with existing layers, error-handling conventions, persistence patterns, and public interfaces. Generated code often introduces a second way to perform an operation that the project already centralizes. That can create inconsistent validation, duplicated business rules, or a bypass around an established service boundary.
Use explicit reviewer questions
GitHub’s review guidance suggests questions such as: “What functional tests to validate this code change do not exist or are missing?” and “What possible vulnerabilities or security issues could this code introduce?” Also ask which edge cases are untested and whether the change aligns with the project’s architecture.
Write down assumptions that are not stated in the ticket. A reviewer should be able to point to the source of each important rule: an acceptance criterion, an existing interface contract, a documented policy, or a deliberately approved decision. If an assumption has no owner or evidence, ask for clarification instead of silently encoding it in generated code.
2. Run functional checks, then test what the tools cannot infer
Run the normal build or compilation process and the tests affected by the change. Read warnings as well as failures; generated code can compile while silently discarding errors, returning default values, or taking an unintended branch.
A practical test sequence
- Build or compile the affected target. Record compiler errors, deprecations, type narrowing, and warnings rather than suppressing them.
- Run focused tests first. Exercise the changed module and its direct callers so failures are easy to attribute.
- Run the broader suite. Changes to shared libraries, schemas, authentication, configuration, or database code can break distant consumers.
- Compare behavior with the acceptance criteria. A green suite does not prove that the suite covers the requested behavior.
- Add missing tests. Cover normal operation, invalid input, empty and boundary values, permission differences, retries, timeouts, and partial failures introduced by the patch.
- Inspect the test diff. Treat deleted, skipped, weakened, or over-mocked tests as review findings requiring an explanation.
Look for plausible-but-wrong logic
- Conditions that use the wrong comparison operator or invert a permission check.
- Validation performed after a value has already reached a sensitive operation.
- Exceptions caught and ignored, converted into success, or logged without preserving context.
- Loops that omit the final item, retry indefinitely, or mutate a collection while iterating.
- Async operations that are started but not awaited, causing races or lost errors.
- Defaults that are safe for a demo but unsafe for production, such as permissive access or disabled verification.
When generated code calls an API you do not recognize, verify the API in the project’s actual version and documentation. Hallucinated method names, parameters, configuration keys, and response fields are common failure modes even when the surrounding code looks idiomatic.
Do not let a passing generated test suite become circular evidence. Tests may mirror the implementation, mock away the failure path, or omit the denied case. Read the assertions and fixtures, then add at least one test that expresses the externally visible contract independently of the implementation structure.
3. Inspect the diff for omissions and unintended behavior
Read the complete diff, not only the lines that appear to implement the feature. Review adjacent configuration, migrations, permission declarations, error handling, tests, and documentation. A small generated change can have a large effect when it modifies a shared helper or a default setting.

Questions for every changed block
- What invariant must remain true before and after this block?
- What happens for null, empty, malformed, oversized, duplicated, stale, or out-of-order data?
- What happens when a dependency, network call, database operation, or file operation fails?
- Can the operation run twice safely, or can retries create duplicate effects?
- Does the code expose new data, broaden an interface, or alter logging and telemetry?
- Did the patch remove a check, test, comment, or validation rule that was carrying an important constraint?
Trace data and state transitions
Follow important values from their source through transformations to their final sink. For stateful code, write down the allowed transitions and check that every transition enforces the same authorization and validation rules. This is particularly useful when an AI-generated patch spreads a previously simple operation across controllers, services, and persistence code.
Compare the before-and-after behavior at boundaries, not just inside the edited function. A changed default, migration, feature flag, route registration, or serialization field can alter clients that are absent from the local test suite. Look for generated cleanup that removes “unused” code without recognizing that another service, deployment script, or external consumer depends on it.
4. Give security-sensitive paths deeper scrutiny
OWASP review guidance recommends additional attention for sensitive code and changes across trust boundaries. Automated scanners frequently miss context-dependent authorization failures and business-logic flaws, so a human must reason about who can perform an action, on which object, under what state, and with which data.
The Tool Desk
Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Outbyte PC Repair FREERepair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Authorization and authentication
- Verify authentication before authorization; do not treat a user ID supplied by the client as proof of identity.
- Check authorization on every path, including bulk operations, background jobs, exports, administrative endpoints, and object-level access.
- Test both allowed and denied roles, tenants, ownership states, and expired or revoked credentials.
- Ensure a new endpoint or function is actually protected by the project’s middleware or policy layer.
Input validation and injection resistance
- Validate type, length, range, encoding, and allowed values at the trust boundary.
- Use parameterized database queries and structured APIs instead of concatenating strings into SQL, shell commands, templates, or URLs.
- Encode output for its destination context, such as HTML, JavaScript, logs, headers, or file paths.
- Reject unexpected fields where mass assignment or object binding could alter protected properties.
Secrets, cryptography, and sensitive data
- Search the diff and repository history for API keys, tokens, passwords, private keys, and accidentally logged personal data.
- Use the project’s approved cryptographic libraries and modes; do not accept homemade encryption, hard-coded keys, weak hashes, or disabled certificate verification.
- Check that secrets come from the intended secret manager or environment mechanism and are not returned in errors or debug output.
- Review retention, redaction, and access controls for new logs, caches, exports, and analytics events.
Deserialization, uploads, and other boundaries
Review parsers and deserializers for unsafe type handling, resource exhaustion, and unexpected object construction. For uploads, verify size limits, content checks, filename handling, storage isolation, and downstream processing. Treat calls to third-party services, browser clients, message queues, and file systems as trust-boundary changes: validate what crosses each boundary and authenticate the destination where required.
Business-logic abuse cases
Ask how a legitimate feature could be used in an unintended sequence: replaying a one-time action, racing two requests, changing an object after approval, bypassing a quota, or combining individually valid operations into an invalid result. Write a test for each material abuse case; scanners are unlikely to infer it.
Prioritize review effort by impact. Authentication, authorization, payment or quota logic, secret handling, parsers, uploads, and code that changes a trust boundary deserve a slower, scenario-based inspection than a purely local formatting change. Record why a path was considered low risk rather than assuming that a small line count means a small security impact.
5. Evaluate maintainability, not just present behavior
Maintainable code makes its intent visible and limits the number of facts a future developer must hold in mind. Generated code can be verbose, over-abstracted, duplicated, or full of comments that describe syntax instead of decisions.
Readability and structure
- Prefer names that express domain meaning rather than implementation mechanics.
- Keep control flow understandable; split large methods when a unit has multiple responsibilities or difficult error paths.
- Remove speculative abstractions, dead branches, duplicated helpers, and configuration that has no current consumer.
- Preserve local conventions for formatting, errors, logging, and module boundaries.
Comments and documentation
Retain comments that explain a non-obvious constraint, compatibility decision, security assumption, or trade-off. Remove comments that merely restate the code. Update public interfaces, migration notes, runbooks, and examples when the behavior or configuration changes.

Testability and future change
Look for hidden global state, hard-coded clocks, direct network calls inside business logic, and constructors that make isolated tests difficult. A small, testable unit is easier to review now and safer to modify later. Require tests that express the contract rather than mirroring the implementation line by line.
Ask whether a future maintainer can find the authoritative rule. Duplicated validation, scattered feature flags, and clever abstractions increase the chance that the next change updates one path and misses another. Prefer a modest, consistent implementation over generated generality that the current feature does not require.
6. Verify dependencies and generated assumptions
Inspect every added or changed package, plugin, model, image, and configuration source. Confirm that the dependency exists in the required version, is maintained, and has a license compatible with the project. Check transitive dependencies and lockfile changes rather than reviewing only the top-level manifest.

Dependency review checklist
- Is the package name real, or could the generated code have invented it?
- Does the version support the language runtime and operating systems used by the project?
- Is the package maintained, and are security advisories or abandoned versions known?
- Does its license fit the project’s distribution model?
- Does the package receive only the permissions and network access it needs?
- Did the lockfile change in ways unrelated to the requested feature?
Do not accept an unfamiliar API, package, or configuration key merely because it appears in generated code. Verify it against the project’s dependency metadata and authoritative documentation, then add a test that would fail if the assumed behavior is wrong.
Review dependency changes for scope as well as validity. A package can be legitimate yet introduce unnecessary transitive code, permissions, network access, or operational obligations. Separate a required dependency from an incidental one, and ask why a lockfile update touches unrelated packages. Confirm that upgrades, removals, and license changes are intentional and documented.
7. Layer automation on every pull request
OWASP DevSecOps guidance recommends running static application security testing, software composition analysis, and secret scanning on every pull request. These controls provide repeatable coverage and a visible record of findings, but they are not interchangeable with contextual review.
| Control | Finds well | Does not establish | Reviewer action |
|---|---|---|---|
| Build and tests | Compilation errors, regressions, specified behavior | Unwritten requirements, missing scenarios, correct business policy | Read failures and add tests for uncovered behavior |
| Static analysis | Many data-flow, type, and risky-pattern issues | Whether a permitted action is appropriate in its business context | Triage findings and inspect sensitive paths manually |
| Software composition analysis | Known vulnerable or disallowed dependencies | Safety of custom code or every newly introduced transitive risk | Review versions, reachability, licensing, and remediation |
| Secret scanning | Recognizable credentials and token patterns | Secrets that evade patterns or were exposed through logs and artifacts | Inspect configuration, history, logs, and rotation procedures |
| Human review | Intent, architecture, authorization, abuse cases, maintainability | Exhaustive detection of every syntactic defect | Use tools as evidence, then make and record a decision |
Make findings actionable by showing them on the diff, assigning owners, and defining a policy for blocking or waiving them. Sensitive paths or policy files can trigger an additional reviewer or a stricter check.

Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
When selecting controls, compare five practical dimensions: the failure modes each control detects, whether it runs consistently on every pull request, whether findings appear on the diff with enough context to act, coverage for the project’s languages and dependency ecosystem, and whether sensitive paths trigger extra policy. GitHub examples include CodeQL for code analysis and Dependabot for dependency-related checks, but any tool must be evaluated against the project’s actual coverage and workflow.

Treat waivers as decisions, not as disappearing alerts. Record the finding, affected code, reason for acceptance, owner, and any follow-up date or compensating test. A scanner that is noisy or poorly tuned can train reviewers to ignore results, while a narrowly configured scanner can create false confidence; both problems require maintenance of the control itself.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.8. Require accountable human approval
Before merge, a named developer should understand the change, confirm the checks, and accept responsibility for its security and maintainability. OWASP’s Human Accountability guidance states: “Every AI-assisted change should be reviewed, approved, and attributable to a developer who is responsible for its security and maintainability.”
Record the approval in the pull request or other audit trail used by the team. If the reviewer cannot explain the code’s assumptions, security boundaries, failure behavior, and test evidence, the change is not ready—regardless of how confidently an assistant generated it.

- Intent: I can state the requirement, acceptance criteria, affected users, and constraints.
- Scope: The diff contains no unrelated refactor, unexplained configuration change, or removed safeguard.
- Behavior: The build and relevant tests pass, and tests cover normal, boundary, failure, and permission cases.
- Logic: I checked error handling, retries, concurrency, idempotency, defaults, and edge cases.
- Security: I traced inputs to sensitive sinks and reviewed authorization, validation, secrets, cryptography, parsing, uploads, and trust boundaries.
- Dependencies: Every package and API is real, compatible, maintained, licensed appropriately, and reflected in the lockfile.
- Maintainability: Names, structure, comments, documentation, and tests make the change understandable and safe to extend.
- Automation: Build checks, tests, static analysis, dependency analysis, and secret scanning ran with findings resolved or explicitly justified.
- Ownership: A named human reviewed and approved the change before merge.
Frequently asked questions
Is AI-generated code inherently less secure?
No blanket conclusion follows from how code was produced. Review the actual behavior, context, dependencies, and trust boundaries. AI-assisted code still requires the same engineering standards and deliberate checks for authorization, validation, cryptography, secrets, and business-logic abuse.
Are passing tests enough to approve an AI-assisted pull request?
No. Tests provide evidence about the scenarios they cover. They do not prove that the requirement was interpreted correctly, that denied paths are protected, or that an architectural constraint was respected. Check the acceptance criteria, inspect the diff, and add tests for missing edge and failure cases.
What should I do when the generated code uses an unfamiliar API?
Verify the method, parameter, response, and configuration key in the project’s installed version and authoritative documentation. Check the dependency metadata and write a test for the assumed behavior. Do not accept an API merely because its name looks idiomatic.

Best Value
Should every scanner finding block a merge?
Use a documented policy. Findings should be triaged for severity, reachability, and applicability, then fixed or explicitly waived with an owner and rationale. A clean scan does not replace human review, and an accepted finding should remain visible in the project’s audit trail.
Who is responsible when an assistant wrote the code?
The named developer who accepts and commits the change remains responsible for understanding and approving it. Require attributable human approval before merge, including an explanation of assumptions, test evidence, security review, and any accepted risk.
