Use AI-generated code as a proposal, never as proof. Before a Linux desktop release, a human maintainer should establish the intended behavior, inspect the complete diff, reproduce the behavior with independent tests, trace security-sensitive data flows, audit AI-suggested dependencies and build changes, and verify the exact package that users will install. A passing test suite or a convincing AI explanation is evidence to examine—not a release decision.
The gate below is designed for pull requests and release candidates. It applies to any Linux desktop architecture, with additional concrete checks for Flatpak because its manifest controls sandbox permissions and desktop metadata.

Define the release gate before reading implementation details
Start with the change request, the application architecture, and the assets that must be protected. Write down what the feature is supposed to do, what it must never do, and which security requirements apply. Identify affected components, trust boundaries, local files, services, and user data. For a small pull request this may fit in a short checklist; for a major release, treat it as a baseline review rather than only a diff review. OWASP distinguishes baseline reviews for new applications or major releases from reviews focused on commits and pull requests in its Secure Code Review Cheat Sheet.

Assign one human owner who understands the code and has authority to approve the release. AI attribution does not transfer responsibility. Linux kernel contribution guidance says the human submitter is responsible for reviewing all AI-generated code, checking licensing compliance, and taking full responsibility for the contribution; it also requires the submitter’s own Signed-off-by tag for the Developer Certificate of Origin. That is project guidance for kernel contributions, not a universal legal rule, but it is a useful ownership model for any desktop project.

A practical gate
| Gate | Evidence to collect | Release condition |
|---|---|---|
| Intent and scope | Feature request, architecture notes, threat model (if available), list of affected components | Every change has a reason tied to the requested behavior |
| Complete diff | File-by-file review, including generated and configuration files | No unexplained or out-of-scope edit remains |
| Behavior | Clean build, relevant tests, failure-case tests, static analysis and dependency results | Observed behavior matches the requirement and regressions are understood |
| Security | Input-to-sink traces, authorization checks, filesystem and process review, logging and error review | Controls are present at each trust boundary and sensitive data is not exposed |
| Supply chain | Registry, maintainer, license, lockfile and transitive-dependency checks | Every dependency and build action is intentional and maintainable |
| Package | Inspection of the actual artifact users will install | Permissions, metadata, integration and update path match the release plan |
1. Establish what the change is supposed to do
Read the issue or specification before opening individual functions. Describe the user-visible result in concrete terms: which input is accepted, which files or services are touched, what happens on failure, and which users are authorized. Map that description to the application’s existing architecture. A feature that looks like a local UI change may cross a parser, a privileged helper, a database, or an external service.
Record boundaries and assets
- List untrusted sources: user-entered text, imported files, downloaded content, API responses, environment variables, and database records.
- List sensitive assets: credentials, tokens, private documents, configuration files, IPC endpoints, and user identifiers.
- Mark sinks: file writes, path construction, database queries, rendered output, logs, shell commands, and network requests.
- Identify existing controls—validation, authorization, sandboxing, encryption, rate limits, and redaction—and where the new code should invoke them.
If no threat model exists, create a short one for the change. State the attacker or accidental-failure scenario, the protected asset, and the control that should stop it. This gives the reviewer a testable expectation instead of relying on the generated code’s comments.
2. Read the complete diff, file by file
Do not approve an AI-generated pull request from its summary, screenshots, or explanation. Open every changed file and compare the actual edit with the requested behavior. OWASP’s Secure Coding with AI Cheat Sheet specifically warns against relying on an AI-generated pull-request summary.

Files that deserve extra scrutiny
- Application code, UI handlers, parsers, and file or path utilities.
- Tests, especially deleted, weakened, skipped, or rewritten assertions.
- Dependency manifests and lockfiles, including transitive additions and version changes.
- Build scripts, Makefiles, package scripts, compiler flags, and generated files.
- Continuous-integration workflows, container definitions, deployment scripts, and release automation.
- Agent instruction files, repository rules, documentation consumed by an agent, and review configuration.
- Desktop-entry files, icons, metainfo, installer scripts, and Linux packaging manifests.
For each file, ask: Why is this change present? What executes it? Which trust level does it run under? Does it alter a security control, a release check, or the contents of the final package? Formatting changes can hide a meaningful line change; lockfile and workflow edits can affect production even when feature code is correct.

Detect scope drift
Compare the diff with the acceptance criteria. Flag unrelated refactors, renamed commands, test removal, changed network endpoints, new telemetry, altered logging, permission broadening, and modifications to agent rules. Require a separate explanation or split the change. A small, reviewable patch is safer than a generated bundle that mixes a feature with cleanup and build-system changes.
3. Verify behavior with independent evidence
Build the application from a clean checkout and run the tests relevant to the changed components. Add or inspect tests for normal behavior, malformed input, permission failures, missing files, interrupted operations, offline operation, and other conditions that matter to a desktop user. GitHub’s review guidance for AI-generated code recommends tests and static analysis as part of review, but a green suite is not proof that security or business logic is correct.
Use tests as evidence, not a verdict
- Confirm that tests exercise the new branch rather than merely importing the module.
- Check assertions for meaningful outcomes, not only that a function returned without throwing.
- Review security-critical test edits independently; generated tests can encode the same mistaken assumption as generated implementation code.
- Run static analysis, compiler warnings, formatting checks, and dependency auditing where they fit the project.
- Reproduce at least one failure path manually or with a focused test, especially when the feature handles files, IPC, credentials, or network data.
When a test fails, determine whether the implementation, test expectation, fixture, or environment is wrong. Do not ask the generating model to declare the failure harmless without checking the code and the requirement yourself.
Ask the reviewer question directly
For every changed component, ask GitHub’s recommended prompt verbatim: What possible vulnerabilities or security issues could this code introduce?
Treat the answer as a list of hypotheses to verify. Look for issues the model did not mention, including authorization mistakes and business-logic flaws that automated checks cannot infer from syntax.

4. Trace security-sensitive data and control flow
Follow each untrusted value from its source, through validation and transformation, to its sink. Check the control at the point where data crosses a trust boundary; validating a value in one code path does not protect a second path that bypasses the validator. The OWASP secure-review guidance provides this source-to-sink approach.
Input, files, and paths
- Validate type, length, encoding, and allowed values before use.
- Canonicalize paths and prevent traversal, symlink surprises, unintended device files, and writes outside the intended directory.
- Use safe temporary-file creation and predictable permissions; avoid following attacker-controlled links when the operation does not require it.
- For imported documents or archives, consider decompression limits, parser failures, and resource exhaustion.
Authorization and local privilege
Check authorization at the operation that changes data or invokes a privileged service, not only in the UI. Confirm that a hidden command, IPC request, or direct file path cannot bypass the visible control. A desktop application still has a local privilege and data-exposure threat model: another process, a malicious file, or a compromised account may be able to trigger code without using the normal interface.
Cryptography, secrets, and configuration
- Verify the algorithm, mode, key length, nonce or IV handling, and randomness source against the project’s requirements.
- Check key storage and rotation; do not log keys, tokens, plaintext credentials, or sensitive document contents.
- Ensure configuration cannot silently disable verification, certificate checks, or authorization in production.
- Use safe error messages for users while preserving enough structured detail for diagnosis without exposing secrets.
OWASP’s Desktop App Security Top 10 highlights improper cryptography, improper authorization, and security misconfiguration among desktop-app risk areas. Use those categories to prioritize manual inspection.

5. Treat AI-suggested dependencies and build changes as high risk
Generated code may invent a package name, select a similarly named package, or add a real package that is unsuitable for the project. Verify that every new dependency exists in the intended registry, is the package you meant, has an acceptable maintainer and license, and is actively maintained. Review direct and transitive additions in the lockfile and check known-vulnerability reports.
Dependency review checklist
- Read the manifest and lockfile diff together; identify why each new or changed entry is needed.
- Resolve the package from the project’s intended registry and verify its official documentation, namespace, version, license, and publisher.
- Inspect transitive dependencies and build-time scripts, not only the top-level package.
- Check update and abandonment signals that matter to your maintenance horizon.
- Run the project’s dependency and license checks in a clean environment.
- Prefer an existing, reviewed internal utility over a new package when it provides the same required behavior.
Inspect code that runs with trust
Build and release files can execute with access to signing keys, source credentials, or deployment environments. Review package scripts, Makefiles, CI workflows, container steps, deployment commands, and external actions for new network access, shell execution, downloaded code, unpinned actions, and weakened checks. Confirm what executes on a developer workstation, in CI, and on a release host. A command that is safe in a sandbox may be dangerous in a trusted build job.
Protect the prompt and repository context
If an agent consumed issue text, repository documentation, review comments, dependency notes, web pages, or tool output, treat that material as untrusted instructions. Inspect the resulting diff for unrelated edits, changed security controls, and secret exposure. Scope agent and CI permissions to the task and avoid supplying secrets or unnecessary private source context. The OWASP AI coding guidance covers these prompt-injection and supply-chain concerns.
6. Inspect the exact Linux package that will ship
Do not infer package safety from the word “Linux” or from a successful local run. Identify the format and distribution path, then inspect the built artifact—not only the source manifest. Compare the package’s builder, signer, distributor, and updater; its access to host files, devices, network, and desktop services; dependency provenance and patching responsibilities; and whether metadata and expected workflows work after installation. The available guidance supports these as review questions, not a universal ranking of deb, rpm, Snap, AppImage, or Flatpak.
Best Value
Flatpak: compare every permission with a feature
Flatpak applications have constrained default access, but the manifest can grant additional permissions. Use the Flatpak sandbox-permissions documentation to review every grant:
- Prefer portals for user-approved file, camera, printing, or other desktop operations instead of blanket filesystem access.
- Use read-only access when writing is not required.
- Prefer narrow XDG directory access to full home-directory access.
- Avoid unfiltered session or system D-Bus access unless a specific feature requires it; narrow the permission where possible.
- Remove permissions left over from an earlier implementation and test the feature with the reduced set.
For each permission, record the concrete code path that needs it and the failure behavior when it is denied. A permission without a current feature requirement is a release defect, not a convenience setting.
Flatpak metadata and desktop integration
Verify the final artifact’s desktop entry, application ID, icons, exported files, and metainfo. Flatpak conventions specify a MetaInfo file under /app/share/metainfo/ named for the application ID. Validate it with appstreamcli validate --explain, following the Flatpak Requirements & Conventions. Confirm the installed package contains the intended metadata and that launchers, file associations, URLs, notifications, portals, and updates behave as expected.
Test the installed artifact
- Install the exact package from the same repository or release channel intended for users.
- Start it as a normal user with no developer-only environment variables.
- Exercise first launch, upgrade, uninstall, offline use, file opening, save/export, and any portal or IPC workflow.
- Inspect effective permissions and verify that denied access fails safely and clearly.
- Check that the displayed version, application ID, icons, desktop entry, and metainfo match the release.
- Capture logs from a realistic run and confirm that secrets and private content are absent.
7. Make approval and sign-off explicit
The reviewer should be able to explain the change without asking the generating system. Record the human owner, the requirements reviewed, tests and static checks run, dependency and license decisions, package validation, known limitations, and the person who approved release. If a security question remains unanswered, block the release or document a time-bounded exception with an owner and compensating control.
Quick Recap
Release-blocking findings
- An unexplained changed file, especially in CI, packaging, permissions, or tests.
- A dependency whose identity, license, provenance, or maintenance status is uncertain.
- Unvalidated input reaching a file, command, query, renderer, log, or external service.
- Authorization or cryptographic behavior inferred from comments rather than verified in code and tests.
- A package permission broader than the feature requires.
- Metadata, desktop integration, or update behavior that fails in the installed artifact.
- No accountable human owner with sufficient context to approve the risk.
Common review mistakes and the correction
| Mistake | Why it fails | Correction |
|---|---|---|
| Approve from the AI summary | The summary can omit files, side effects, and scope drift | Read and explain every changed file |
| Equate passing tests with safety | Tests may miss business logic, authorization, and data-flow flaws | Combine tests with manual source-to-sink and threat review |
| Review only feature code | Lockfiles, CI, scripts, and manifests execute in trusted contexts | Include the complete diff and final artifact |
| Grant broad desktop access for convenience | Extra filesystem or D-Bus access increases exposure | Use portals and the narrowest permission that supports the feature |
| Let the model choose a package blindly | Names can be hallucinated or intentionally confusing | Verify registry identity, maintainer, license, transitive graph, and maintenance |
| Assume attribution shifts responsibility | The shipped code remains the project’s responsibility | Require a knowledgeable human sign-off |
Final go/no-go checklist
- The intended behavior, architecture, assets, and threat assumptions are written down.
- Every changed file has a reason, including tests, lockfiles, generated files, CI, agent rules, and packaging.
- A clean build and relevant tests pass; failure paths and security-critical tests were inspected.
- Untrusted inputs, trust boundaries, authorization, paths, cryptography, errors, logs, and integrations were manually reviewed.
- New dependencies, licenses, transitive packages, scripts, workflows, and external actions are verified.
- The exact installed package has the required metadata, desktop behavior, update path, and least-privilege access.
- A human owner understands the code and records approval, limitations, and any exception.
