To trace a meme, run the image through Google Lens and TinEye, then open and verify the pages they return. Lens is good at visually similar images and related webpages; TinEye specializes in exact and altered copies and lets you sort matches by when it found them, how much they changed, or their size. Treat every result as a lead about an indexed appearance—not automatic proof of the original creator or creation date.
What reverse image search can—and cannot—tell you
A reverse-image search starts with pixels instead of words. The service compares your meme with images in its index and returns matches, visually similar pictures, or pages that use a related image. This is often enough to locate a clean version, identify the photograph behind a caption, or find an older repost.

It does not create a guaranteed chain of ownership. A result dated 2018 may be a repost of a 2015 file, and a “first found” date means the service’s first indexed copy, not necessarily the first time the image existed. Pages can disappear, dates can be changed, and credit or embedded metadata can be inaccurate. Google specifically notes that image-search results are limited by indexing and retrieval, so a missing result cannot prove that an image was never online (Google Search Central’s image-search documentation).

The first question is often answerable quickly. The second can be answered only within each service’s index. The third requires page-level context and corroboration. Keeping those questions separate prevents a popular repost from being mistaken for an original source.

Before you search: preserve the evidence
Save the original file or screenshot
Download the meme at its highest available resolution. If it came from a post, keep the screenshot and copy the post URL separately. Do not overwrite the file while cropping or enhancing it; make working copies so you can return to the untouched version.
Record visible context
- Note where you found it, the account or page name, and the displayed date.
- Keep the exact caption, hashtags, watermark, or filename.
- Look for clues such as a photographer’s mark, movie frame, logo, language, or a crop that may come from a larger image.
- Record whether the image includes interface elements, borders, stickers, or a screenshot of another post.
This information helps you assess whether a search result is an original-looking page or simply another copy of the same meme. It also gives you a fixed reference when a platform later edits a caption, removes an image, or changes how it displays the date.
Google Lens: the quickest first search
Google’s computer instructions support an uploaded image file, a dragged-and-dropped file, or an image URL. In a supported browser, you can also right-click an image on a webpage and choose the Google Lens search option. Results can include similar images and webpages containing the image or a similar one (Google Search Help: Search with an image on Google).
Use an uploaded file
- Open Google Images or the Lens entry in your browser.
- Choose the option to search by image.
- Upload the saved meme, or drag it into the search box.
- If you have a public image URL, paste that URL instead of uploading a file.
- Review both the visual matches and the webpages that contain a matching or similar image.
A screenshot is acceptable, but a compressed screenshot may produce weaker matches than the original file. If the meme includes a large caption, inspect Lens’s selected region and narrow the search to the photograph or illustration when that control is available. A selected region can help when the text dominates the full frame, while the complete image can be more useful when its layout or watermark is distinctive.
Use “About this image” for timeline clues
When the feature is available for a result, Google’s About this image panel can show when Google may have first seen the image or a visually similar version and may surface pages it encountered earlier (Google Search Help: Learn more about an image). Phrase the finding precisely: “Google reports it first saw this image around…” rather than “this image was created in…”. The panel describes Google’s indexed view, not a certified origin.
The wording matters because “first seen” can refer to the exact image or to a similar version, depending on what Google identifies. Treat the panel as a starting point for opening older-looking pages, not as a publication certificate. Check whether the page actually displays the same pixels, a larger source file, or merely a related image.
TinEye: find exact and altered copies
Run the same file through TinEye after Lens. TinEye accepts an upload, an image URL, an image pasted from the clipboard, or a drag-and-drop file. Its documentation says it can identify exact copies and some altered copies, including cropped, edited, resized, or rotated versions (TinEye FAQs; How to use TinEye).
The Tool Desk
Outbyte PC Repair FREEClear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Outbyte Driver Updater FREEScan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Submit the meme
- Open TinEye and select the upload control, or paste the image or its URL.
- Wait for the results page to list matching images and pages.
- Open several candidates rather than relying on the first item.
Use the result sorting controls
TinEye provides sorting options for the first occurrence it found, the newest match, the most changed version, and the largest version. “First occurrence” is useful for finding an early indexed copy; “largest” can lead to a less-compressed file; “most changed” can expose a heavily edited meme variant. None of these labels independently proves who created the image or when it was first made.
Sorting answers different practical needs. Use newest when checking whether a meme is still spreading, most changed when looking for a captioned or redesigned derivative, and largest when you need a clearer file for visual comparison. Open the page behind each promising thumbnail: the image service can identify a file while only the linked page can provide surrounding text, a byline, or a stated publication date.

Lens and TinEye answer different parts of the question
| Question | Google Lens | TinEye |
|---|---|---|
| Can it find visually similar images? | Yes; Lens returns similar images and related webpages. | Its documented strength is matching exact and altered copies; visual-similarity behavior is not the primary promise. |
| Can I upload a file? | Yes, by upload or drag-and-drop. | Yes, and also by URL, clipboard paste, or drag-and-drop. |
| Can it find cropped or resized copies? | It may return related versions through visual matching. | It documents matching some cropped, edited, resized, and rotated copies. |
| Does it provide an early-use clue? | About this image may show an approximate first-seen date and earlier-seen pages. | Sorting can show the first occurrence found by TinEye. |
| What does a date prove? | When Google may have seen an image or similar version in its index. | When TinEye found a matching occurrence in its index. |
| What should I verify? | Whether the page is using the same image, a similar one, or a later repost. | Whether the sorted match is an actual page with credible date and attribution context. |
Different indexes and matching methods mean that one service can reveal a page the other misses. Comparing both result sets is more reliable than repeatedly refreshing a single search. A result missing from one service is not evidence that the image has never appeared online.
A complete workflow for finding the source
1. Search the untouched meme
Start with the full image because the caption, watermark, or surrounding design may be distinctive. Save the strongest Lens matches and TinEye’s earliest-looking and largest candidates. Copy each page URL into a notes file and record the date you inspected it.
2. Inspect the candidate pages, not just thumbnails
Open each result in a new tab. Check the page’s publication date, surrounding text, account or site identity, and whether the image is embedded from somewhere else. A result page that merely repeats the meme is evidence of another indexed appearance, not proof of authorship.
Look at the page’s own timestamp rather than relying on a date displayed by a search result. Ask whether the date belongs to the article, the image upload, a comment, or an update. If the page loads an image from another host, follow that link as a separate lead instead of treating the embedding page as the source.
3. Compare the pixels and the context
- Is the candidate the same crop, or does it include more of the original scene?
- Does it remove the meme caption and reveal a photographer’s watermark?
- Is the apparent date attached to the image itself, the page, a comment, or a later update?
- Does the page credit a creator, archive, photographer, studio, or news organization?
- Do distinctive shadows, objects, faces, or background marks align exactly?
Prefer a page that displays a larger, uncropped image with contemporaneous explanatory text over an undated repost. A clean file is useful, but clarity alone does not establish priority; the page’s provenance and date still need checking.
4. Use the earliest indexed candidates carefully
Sort TinEye by first occurrence and review Google’s earlier-seen pages when available. Then verify the dates on the pages themselves. Report the result as “the earliest copy I could locate in these indexes” unless you have independent evidence of an earlier publication.
Recommended Free Tools
Keep the services’ labels distinct in your notes. “First occurrence” is TinEye’s first occurrence found; “first seen” is Google’s indication of when it may have encountered an image or similar version. Neither label means first created, first posted anywhere, or first made by the account shown on that page.
5. Corroborate attribution
Look for agreement between multiple pages, archives, and credited accounts. Google recommends checking evidence and perspectives when evaluating images and warns that digital-source credit and metadata can be modified or inaccurate (About this image guidance). A single profile claiming ownership is not enough when older, identical copies exist elsewhere.
6. Keep an evidence log
For each candidate, record the service, result label, page URL, displayed date, date you accessed it, and what is visibly different. Note whether the page is reachable, requires a login, or embeds an image from another host. This simple log lets you distinguish a service’s index date from a page’s publication date and makes your final wording auditable.

When the full meme produces no useful match
Search the underlying image without text
Create a separate crop that removes the caption, borders, stickers, and interface elements. Leave as much of the photograph or artwork as possible. Run that crop through Lens and TinEye, then compare the results with the full-meme search. TinEye documents some cropped and edited matches, but no service promises a result for every crop or meme.
Try several crops
- Crop tightly around a face, object, logo, or distinctive background.
- Crop a wider scene if the close-up is too generic.
- Keep the original aspect ratio in one version and use a square crop in another.
- Make one crop that preserves a watermark and another that removes overlay text around it.
Do not treat a failed crop as evidence that the image is original. It may be too small, heavily compressed, private, blocked from indexing, or absent from the service’s retained data. A crop can also remove the very feature that makes a match possible, so compare several versions rather than endlessly modifying one file.
Search distinctive text separately
Copy an unusual caption, quotation, or visible phrase and search it as ordinary text. Try the full wording first, then a short distinctive fragment in quotation marks. Compare the resulting pages and dates with the image-search candidates. Text search is a supplementary lead, not a substitute for checking the image itself.
Search spelling, punctuation, and line breaks exactly as shown before trying a shorter fragment. A copied caption may lead to a discussion, transcript, or earlier post even when the image itself is not indexed. Still inspect the page’s image and date; identical wording can be reused with a different picture.
How to judge whether you found an earlier version
An earlier version normally has the same underlying visual content with fewer edits, a larger uncropped frame, or a page date that predates the meme. Build the case from several observations:
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Visual continuity: distinctive pixels, objects, shadows, or marks line up between versions.
- Less editing: the candidate removes a caption, border, sticker, or color treatment present in the meme.
- Earlier page evidence: the linked page shows a date before the meme’s known appearance and has not obviously been backdated.
- Contextual plausibility: the page explains where the image came from or credits a source that can be checked.
- Independent agreement: another service or unrelated page supports the same relationship without simply copying the first result.
If only the date is earlier but the page is an unverified repost, describe it as an earlier indexed appearance rather than the original. If the candidate is visually similar but not pixel-identical, call it a related image or possible underlying source until the relationship is confirmed.
Common failure modes and fixes
Only the same viral reposts appear
Remove the caption and borders, search the underlying image, and use TinEye’s first-occurrence and largest-version sorts. Open results beyond the top few thumbnails; search pages often rank popularity rather than age.
The image is too blurry or tiny
Find the clearest copy you already have, export the screenshot at its native resolution, and try a crop around the most distinctive detail. Avoid repeatedly enlarging a blurry file: interpolation does not restore missing image information.
Results show similar scenes but not the exact picture
Switch between a full-scene crop and a distinctive-object crop. Lens may be matching composition or subject rather than identical pixels. Treat these as leads and verify the linked pages manually.

Dates conflict
Separate three dates: when the service indexed the image, when the page says it was published, and when the file may have been created. Record each date with its source. A page can be older than the meme while still being a repost of an even older, now-unavailable file.
The original page is gone
Keep the result URL, a screenshot of the page and image, and the date you accessed it. Look for the same credited name or image on other independent pages. Do not claim that a vanished page was the creator solely because it was the oldest surviving lead.
Metadata points to a creator
Metadata can be stripped, copied, or edited. Use it as a clue only after corroborating it with the page’s publication context and independent copies.
No service returns anything
Check that the upload completed, try the public URL if one exists, and test a crop plus a text search. If all attempts fail, report that no matching indexed result was located. Do not convert a zero-result search into a claim that the meme is new or privately created.
How to write a defensible provenance statement
Use language that matches the evidence. For example:
- “Google Lens found pages using this image, including a page dated March 2021.”
- “TinEye’s first-occurrence sort returned a 2019 indexed copy; the service does not establish that it was the original.”
- “The earliest page I could verify credits the image to the stated photographer.”
- “The creator and exact creation date could not be confirmed from indexed results.”
- “The image appears on a page dated earlier than the meme, but that page’s authorship and original file could not be independently verified.”
Avoid “this proves,” “the first ever,” or “the original creator” unless you have evidence beyond reverse-image-search results. Explain which service supplied each lead and which facts came from the linked page.
Privacy and practical precautions
- Do not upload confidential documents, private family photos, or images containing personal information unless you understand the service’s handling terms.
- Use a redacted copy when the unrelated background could expose names, addresses, or account details.
- Keep the untouched file locally so you can demonstrate what was searched.
- Save URLs and dates as you work; search indexes and pages change.
- Do not assume that removing a caption removes identifying information from the underlying scene.
A repeatable checklist
- Save the highest-quality meme and preserve the original.
- Run the full image through Google Lens.
- Review similar images, related webpages, and About this image when available.
- Run the same file through TinEye.
- Inspect first-occurrence, newest, most-changed, and largest-version results as appropriate.
- Open candidate pages and verify their dates, text, credits, and image dimensions.
- Make one or more crops without overlay text and search them again.
- Search distinctive caption text separately if image results remain inconclusive.
- Compare independent evidence before naming a source or date.
- State uncertainty explicitly: indexed appearance is not proof of creation or authorship.
Frequently asked questions

Best Value
What if Google Lens finds only similar pictures?
Use a tighter crop around a distinctive object and a wider crop of the scene, then try TinEye. Similarity results are leads; they do not necessarily show the same image.
Does TinEye’s first result prove who made the meme?
No. It indicates the first matching occurrence TinEye found in its index. The linked page may be a repost, so check its context and compare other independent pages.
Does an About this image date prove when the image was created?
No. Google describes when it may have first seen an image or similar version. Use it as an approximate indexing clue and verify the page’s own publication context.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Bottom line
Use Google Lens for visual discovery and context, TinEye for exact or altered copies and sortable match history, then verify every promising page yourself. The strongest conclusion is usually an evidence-bounded one—where and when a service found a copy, which page supplies context, and what remains unproven about the meme’s true origin.
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I reverse image search a meme?
Save the meme, upload it to Google Lens, review similar images and related webpages, then submit the same file to TinEye. Verify promising pages, dates, and credits.
How do I find the original source of a meme?
Search the full meme and then crops without captions or borders. Compare Lens and TinEye results and treat the oldest indexed page as a lead unless page evidence independently supports authorship.
How can I find an older version of this image?
Use TinEye’s first-occurrence and largest-version sorts, review Google’s earlier-seen pages, and verify the dates on the linked pages.
Does TinEye’s first result prove who made the meme?
No. It is the first matching occurrence TinEye found in its index and may be a repost.
Does Google About this image prove the creation date?
No. It is an approximate indication of when Google may have first seen the image or a similar version.
The Bottom Line
Search with both Google Lens and TinEye, then verify the linked pages. Report indexed appearances and supported credits precisely, without treating a search result as proof of the meme’s first creation or author.
