To retry failed Node.js jobs without repeating harmful side effects, combine a bounded retry policy with idempotent handlers and a deliberate plan for exhausted jobs. BullMQ provides per-job attempts and backoff when you run it with Redis; Amazon SQS offers managed queues, redrive policies, and dead-letter queues (DLQs). Neither choice removes the need to make processing safe when work runs more than once.
How do you retry failed jobs without repeating side effects?
Separate the problem into three decisions: which failures are worth retrying, how long to wait before trying again, and how to handle work that may have partly completed or been delivered again. A queue can schedule another attempt, but it cannot generally know whether an external payment, email, database write, or API call already took effect.

Make the operation safe to repeat at the boundary where duplicate work matters. Give the logical operation a stable identity, and persist completion or deduplication state where the side effect is controlled. For a multi-step job, consider splitting work into smaller steps with explicit state so a failure does not make the handler repeat every earlier action. These are application design techniques, not guarantees supplied automatically by a queue.
BullMQ describes the target as reaching the same final system state whether the job succeeds immediately or fails first and later succeeds. It recommends keeping jobs atomic and simple because a processor that mixes database writes and API calls is harder to reason about after a partial failure. See BullMQ’s idempotent jobs guidance.

Amazon SQS standard queues use at-least-once delivery, so consumers must be prepared for a message to arrive more than once. AWS likewise advises designing applications to tolerate repeated processing: SQS standard queues and at-least-once delivery.
Why a queue job ID is not end-to-end exactly-once processing
A queue-level identifier can help prevent duplicate enqueueing within that queue’s own state and retention rules, but it does not make an external side effect idempotent. BullMQ’s custom jobId handling relies on the caller to provide uniqueness; it does not guarantee that a payment provider or another API will perform an operation only once. See BullMQ job IDs.

How many times should a job be retried?
There is no universal retry count. Set a finite budget based on the job’s cost, how long a downstream outage might reasonably last, downstream rate limits, and the service objective. Classify failures in application code: a temporary network problem or service limit may clear; invalid input or a permanent business-rule failure usually will not.

In BullMQ, a job is considered failed when its processor throws an exception or when it becomes stalled and reaches the configured maximum stalled count. Processor exceptions should be JavaScript Error objects. Configure attempts above one to allow retries; if no backoff is configured, retries may happen immediately. The precise behavior is documented in BullMQ’s retrying failing jobs guide.

Choose a delay strategy, not just an attempt count
- Fixed backoff: wait the same configured interval between attempts. This is straightforward when a stable delay suits the downstream service.
- Exponential backoff: increase the wait as failures continue. BullMQ’s example with a one-second seed and three total attempts yields retry delays of one, two, and four seconds.
- Jitter: randomize delays to spread synchronized retry waves from many jobs. It reduces the chance of all workers retrying simultaneously; it does not guarantee that the service will recover.
- Custom backoff: use application-specific logic when different failure classes need different delays.
In BullMQ, attempts counts total runs, including the first run. Thus, three attempts means the initial execution plus up to two retries, not three retries after the initial run. See the BullMQ retry configuration examples for fixed, exponential, and jitter options.
Stop retrying permanent failures
Do not spend the retry budget on errors that cannot be corrected by waiting. BullMQ provides UnrecoverableError to move a job to failed without performing its configured retries. Use it where the failure is known to be permanent, and reserve ordinary retry behavior for failures that may succeed later. The queue documentation describes this path in its stop-retrying jobs pattern.

What should happen after a job fails repeatedly?
Once the retry budget is exhausted, the failure needs an operational destination: somewhere to inspect context, diagnose the cause, and decide whether replay is safe. In SQS, configure a source queue’s redrive policy to send messages to a dead-letter queue after a chosen maxReceiveCount. The DLQ separates messages that could not be processed so operators can inspect them and, after resolving the cause, redrive them for processing.

Before replaying a message, determine whether earlier attempts could have partially completed the operation. Preserve enough diagnostic context—such as the logical operation identity, failure reason, and attempt information—to make that decision. Monitor the DLQ and define who can inspect and redrive messages; AWS specifically discusses alarms and redrive in its SQS dead-letter queue guidance.

SQS DLQ setup and ordering trade-offs
- Create the DLQ before configuring the source queue’s redrive policy. AWS requires the source and DLQ to be in the same account and Region.
- Choose
maxReceiveCountdeliberately. A threshold that is too low can move a message aside before a temporary issue has had a fair chance to clear. - For standard queues, message expiration after transfer to the DLQ is based on the original enqueue time. AWS recommends setting DLQ retention longer than source-queue retention.
- Do not use a DLQ with an SQS FIFO queue when moving a failed message aside would break exact message or operation order.
AWS documents these configuration and retention details in its DLQ documentation. Its example for configuring a redrive policy uses the AWS SDK for JavaScript v2; treat that sample as version-specific and check the SDK version and current API before adapting code: AWS SDK for JavaScript v2 SQS DLQ example.

BullMQ and SQS represent different operating models, not interchangeable implementations. BullMQ is a Node.js queue library whose jobs are held in Redis and processed by workers. SQS is a hosted queue service with AWS-managed source queues and DLQ/redrive concepts. Choose based on who should operate the broker and which failure and recovery semantics the application needs.
| Decision | BullMQ over Redis | Amazon SQS |
|---|---|---|
| Operating model | Node.js queue library; jobs are held in Redis and processed by workers. BullMQ queue documentation | Hosted queue service with source-queue and DLQ configuration. AWS DLQ documentation |
| Retry and failure handling | Per-job attempts, fixed or exponential backoff, jitter, custom strategies, and an unrecoverable-error path. Retry guide; unrecoverable-error pattern | Redrive policy moves messages after the configured receive count; AWS cautions against setting the threshold too low. AWS DLQ documentation |
| Duplicate handling | Handlers should be designed for idempotent processing; this is a job-design pattern, not automatic protection for every side effect. BullMQ idempotent jobs guidance | Standard queues are at-least-once; consumers should tolerate duplicate delivery. AWS delivery semantics |
| Dead-letter handling | The cited BullMQ retry documentation does not establish a native DLQ feature. Verify current BullMQ documentation and choose an explicit exhausted-job handling design. | AWS documents DLQs and redrive policies for isolating and recovering messages. AWS DLQ documentation |
| Ordering consideration | Confirm ordering behavior against current BullMQ documentation for the exact queue configuration. | A DLQ can alter effective order; avoid it for FIFO workloads that require exact message or operation order. AWS DLQ documentation |
For either approach, the essential application work is the same: define transient and permanent errors, cap attempts, make repeated processing safe, and give exhausted work a monitored recovery path. The cited documentation does not establish a universal retry count, comparative performance benchmark, or total-cost winner, so those choices must follow the workload and operating requirements.
